Missoni for Target Collection

Posted on August 11, 2011

Mass retailer/designer collaborations are a tricky business. If the impossible happens and the designer’s upscale aesthetic is successfully translated, there’s a risk of watering down the brand. If the far-more-likely happens and the designer’s aesthetic is committee’d and price pointed so far down as to be unrecognizable, then why bother putting your name on it?

But the payoffs can be huge when it all comes together, so it’s no surprise so many designers keep trying to get their names on sheets, coffeecups, and $25 dresses. Target has a fairly good track record in this area and Missoni’s vivid graphic qualities seem like a perfect fit for the store.

Now hush. Mr. Press Release is speaking:

“Target® is partnering with Italian luxury brand Missoni to introduce an affordable, limited-edition collection for fashion and home. Missoni for Target features apparel and accessories for women, men, girls and baby, as well as home goods including bedding, dinnerware, stationery and décor items. Ranging in price from $2.99 to $599.99, with most items less than $40, Missoni for Target will be available Sept. 13 through Oct. 22, 2011 at all Target stores and Target.com.

“Our collection for Target embodies Missoni’s values of family, color and quality,” said creative director Angela Missoni. “It has been a fantastic experience translating our aesthetic into an affordable line, one we are eager to share with families across the United States.”

“The Missoni family has established one of the world’s most creative brands, and together we’ve created a collection that will have guests lining up outside their local Target in anticipation,” said Kathee Tesija, executive vice president of merchandising, Target. “Our collection with Missoni offers more than 400 compelling products for every aspect of guests’ busy lives, all at incredible prices, and provides Target with a unique point of differentiation for the fall season.”

Proof is in the pudding cups, bitches. Let’s see it:

WOW. That’s not a “pretty good” interpretation of Missoni; that’s an EXCELLENT one. That IS Missoni.

We want the neckties. Well of course we want the neckties. What would we do with a woman’s bathing suit or a baby jumper? The bike is tempting, but only if we plan on participating in a parade some time soon.

Et vous, petit chats? See anything you like?

Lots of things I like, but what season is this thing for? There’s a bathing suit and knit snow wear in there!

      • Anonymous

That works for me!  I live in PA and visit my family in FL plenty of times during the winter.  Love the swimsuit and the first cardigan as well as lots of the home stuff and scarves.  Hope my Target gets most of the items in stock!

      • Jolene Barnett

There are a lot of Target stores here in California, and we have decent year round weather, and even when it’s cold most of the gyms have indoor pools.

Um…no.  Not my style, but it’s definitely Missoni..

I covet that blanket so much…

      • Anonymous

Right?  I don’t think I could quite pull off any of the clothing, but I would LOVE that quilt!

        • Anonymous

Me too – the quilt is my favorite piece.  If there were a breakfast-in-bed type tray, too, I’d be all over that.

          • jamie richardson

            oh that would be perfect!

        DYING for that quilt.

I like the house wears items.

I think I can get behind some of the accessories, too. The rest of it I don’t think I can pull off.

I like the plates and bike, but everything else? Looks like stuff I could have gotten at the local nursing homes garage sale.

I feel like the 70s are coming back in such a huge way this Fall that it’s almost frightening. The 4th one down literally looks like something my mother wore in the early 80s. The pattern is very striking, but as a whole collection the pattern is sooooo prominent that you can’t really buy more than one piece from the clothing line and call it a day (Similar to Amy Winehouse’s collec. with the houndstooth).

I love the plate set and how it’s set up. That looks very well thought out. Too much of this in your house, though, and you might as well be on the Brady Bunch set.

    • http://twitter.com/nicole_sauvage Nicole Sauvage

Ooh, sign me up for a cup-and-saucer set and a scarf or two.  And maybe one of the luggage pieces… (Ow, my paycheck!)

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F3HKIK7MIJMBDAQBDWEAQDTXUM theneva

Save your cash. Target luggage is crap. It’s like they have some personal vendetta against functioning zippers.

    • http://twitter.com/thebestjasmine Jasmine

I love it all.  I want one of everything.  Especially the scarves, the luggage, and the cups.  And I think one of those throw pillows will be on my couch by September 14th.

This just proves further how fashion fucks us.

      • Christine Campbell

        Could you elaborate?  I’m curious.

    • Anonymous

I like it. I can’t really get behind all the matchy-matchy though.

    • http://twitter.com/Gothama1 Liz H.

I could work those accessories.  The dresses and other clothing just isn’t doing it for me.  Though the ties are great.

      • Anonymous

agreed! the clothes look cheap and late 90s k-mart to me (i should know, i was one of the kids who had to wear the crap). but the accessories could add some great oomph to a basic outfit.

    • Sarah M.

I love the poncho/carigan/shawl thingy. probably the only piece of clothing that I *may* be able to fit my plus-size body into. Everything else is also fab, I’d definitely get more of the clothes if they are made in the larger sizes.

      • MilaXX

Yeah it’s kind of a pain that Target’s designer collaborations rarely extend to the plus sizes.

        • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

          I second that emotion.

      • Anonymous

        I know, it’s rather annoying isn’t it?

    • Anonymous

These are actually very good examples of almost everything I don’t like about Missoni.  Congrats on their interpretation of the brand.  Too bad I’m not a Missoni girl.

      • Anonymous

And I need that loopy pillow, too.

    • MilaXX

Not crazy about the clothes. It look like Julie’s audition collection. I could see the men’s ties working, and maybe the women’s scarves. The bike is just silly, but I do like the dishes.

    • Annie Leung

I’ll take a cup and saucer set with a scarf please!

    • Laura Valentine

WANT the scarves, quilt, stack of teacups (which I really, really don’t need – we have too many), and the baby stuff.  Sign me up, Tarjay!

It’s Good! I want several things from this collection.

I have a couple of 11 years old that I may be rushing to Target to get these looks.  The tomboy may say no, but the little fashion diva will jump at it.

    • http://twitter.com/OracleKath Kathrine Marlow

The home stuff and scarves are excellent.  I like the bag/luggage/container things too.

    • Christine Campbell

Well translated!  I’m impressed!  And also laughing at the stilted public relations language – “Missoni for Target features apparel and accessories for women, men, girls and baby,” So once again, I will be buying clothes for my elementary school age son in the girls department because my only other options have vehicles and sports on them.  At least I can stuff my other one into the apparently gender-neutral “baby” option for now.  Can’t wait to see the things in person!

Oh man, I want like, all the housewears stuff, but ESPECIALLY THE BIKE. Unfortunately there is no Target in Canada yet. Although I do hope that when Target comes here they will make an effort to collaborate with Canadian designers as well.l

Super cute! If I had to pick, I’d say the coffee cup set and the rain boots.

      • Anonymous

Exactly. The first set of boots. And some tights (if they carried plus size, which they don’t.)

    • Rand Ortega

I love it. I must own all of it.

    • Anonymous

I love that first dress, but it’s all quite pretty.

    • Deidre Robbers

The Bike… I WANT the Bike!!!   The accessories are more my style than the clothing, but it all looks fun.  The clothes are more appropriate for my daughters as school clothes.

    • Anonymous

First dress (if the cut is right on me), baby romper, “silk” scarves, throw pillows, espresso cups.

    • Anonymous

I’ve never been that crazy about the Grandma’s afghan aesthetic, but I’d probably pick up some of the dishware.

    • Anonymous

That first dress is pretty cool and I’m kind of digging that cardigan in the third look.
J’aime beaucoup the scarves and the tote bag, plus I really like all the home stuff. The bicycle is a little silly.

Thing is, I really like the zigzag print, but it makes me think of Charlie Brown, so I don’t know if I would actually wear it.

I am totally in love! I definitely will be saving up the next few paychecks for this, and on the website at midnight since my Target gets seemingly nothing! I’m even planning to buy the laptop sleeve just for my Kindle for right now.

    • Anonymous

I wish I didn’t already have a laptop sleeve!  And my brother is so getting one of those ties for Christmas.  If the price is right and the quality looks okay, I might pick up a tote as well.

    • Anonymous

ADORE the teacup set. And there are a few other separates I like very much, particularly that first dress.

    • aussiegal77

Being a lover of graphic print, this is fantastic for me!  But I don’t much like the clothes.  All the other stuff though – accessories, home wares, travel luggage, the bike! – loved it!

    • j mats

      the pillows and stripey socks/rainboots!

I have a new baby girl that I need to have in that baby romper as soon as I can, thankyouverymuch.

As for the rest, one of everything, please! Especially the scarves. gorgeous.

    • Amanda in Austin

The quilt. And the knit scarf. And maybe some tights and rainboots.  The coffee cups are fun, too.

I don’t like how they show the fashion pieces all worn at the same time, including hat, handbag, shoes, socks, etc. If you wore it like that in real life, you’d get laughed at. It’s all about mixing!  Do not wear Target Missoni from head to toe, ladies and gentlemen.

    • Anonymous

I really love that magenta coat.  I love all of it, really.  Might have to head out to Target this afternoon and see it in person!

    • Anonymous

Never been a big Missoni fan…all that color and zig-zaggy stuff just gives me a headache – also reminds me of all the rick-rack foisted upon me when I was learning how to sew. Having said that – I’d take the swim suit in a heartbeat, and I like the floral rain boots.

    • Susan Crawford

I see that everything I see is something I like! What a great, fun, well-rounded collection. It will be blowing out of the stores like a Force ten gale.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I approve.  There are a couple of women’s pieces I may have to buy.  I may also need the cup and saucer set, though I don’t know if I can get my husband to go for it.  (Housewares we have to agree on, it’s a rule — a major pain in the ass, but a rule:)

And I really wish I knew who handled the clothing decisions at Target, because they do a fantastic job.  I buy a lot of casual dresses there (’cause I’m ridiculously cheap) and I have a few that have gotten more praise than the high-end stuff in my wardrobe!

      • Anonymous

My husband and I have the same housewares rule, and unfortunately, he’s not much of a graphic prints kind of guy.  But we shall see. :)

Not big on the Charlie Brown zigzags, except for the ties.  I love those floral rain boots (if that’s what they are?) in the 2nd pic, and the floral scarves and bag.

Even though I’m not digging the actual cups and saucers, I’m tickled by that little storage/display unit for them!

My birthday falls in the time that they have the collection out, so I might get some of the items as a present to myself :-). I love that rose print! Just hope that those are the under-$40 items (well, except the bike; I expect that to cost more so I’ll probably not get that one).

Oh wow.  I WANT!  Seriously, the knitwear is beautiful, and I love the luggage!  And all the other bags.  AND the bicycle!  That is the prettiest bicycle ever.

I’m not crazy about the clothes (well, maybe the bathing suit) but I love the housewares stuff.

LOVE!  Prints!  Colour!  I want that fractured rose print on the wee girl’s coat.  And the crockery.

The coat looks gorgeous, but the other stuff is so 70s it’s making me itchy.

Well, I’m in love.  I want the striped sweater skirt and the bike.  DEFINITELY the bike.

I’ll try to nab some of those dessert plates, for sure. Actually, I really like all of it. But when it comes to the clothing, I’m a broken record on this one: I’ll have to see the pieces in person, as all too often cheap materials and craftsmanship doom the pieces.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OQAEI5VIBLXN6YAONCDMUQVRBI Sydney Rose

This looks very much like stuff I wore back in the early 70′s when I was in high school.

Not interested in revisiting that time period but I would love to own that bike!

Those rain boots are ten kinds of cute.

    • Anonymous

The first one and the scarves.  Most isn’t in a palette I like.

    • http://twitter.com/schwarzestiefel Schwarzestiefel

All the stuff is great looking, and I’d buy it if not for two things: Everybody will know you got it at Target, and Target is nefarious corporation that treats their employees like crap, and supports far right wing homophobic candidates.  But of course everyone knows that Fascists are much better dressed than Lefties!

    • http://profiles.google.com/dlaferry Dianna LaFerry

The scarves and make-up bags (and luggage) are all great if you (like me) appreciate Missoni but it isn’t your personal style.  The clothing seems young and fun – perfect for youngsters who love Missoni and can pull it off, but maybe can’t afford the “real” stuff with their allowance money…

    • http://profiles.google.com/phyllis.craine Phyllis Craine

So tired of designers either going luxury brand or discount level.  Whatever happened to well made mid-priced goods?

    • Anonymous

They’ve done an outstanding job here.  It really looks like Missoni, not “Missoni for Target.”  Much will depend on the quality of the materials and the craftmanship.  The Target designer collections are never really well made but some are better than others.  They’ve had some good collaborations lately.  The Liberty line from a year ago was stellar – clothes, housewares, accessories, the bike.  This summer’s Calypso St. Barth line was pretty good, too.  Lots of cute things though not quite as well made as the Liberty line.  I have several things from both collections that I wear a lot.

Missoni isn’t really my thing but I could see grabbing some of the accessories.  And I do find myself loving that sweater with blue striped sleeves and a floral bodice.

Really like that first dress, and several of the other pieces. Nice!!

Sob. I would kill a puppy for the bike, the bathing suit, the scarfs and laptop case. But English, so no Target. This is a stunning collection.

    • Anonymous

I wish I knew how to ride a damn bike! There’s a Target in walking distance from me. That laptop cover is adorbs, too.

    • Anonymous

I pretty much want every accessory shown! Love the clothing, too, but Target has a piss-poor reputation lately when it comes to plus sizes. I can sometimes get away with a standard size on the bottom, but not on the top. That bike is ADORABLE…but I bet that’s the $599 item. ;-)  And for the people who said this is too 70s, Missoni never reads that way to me for some reason. More like early 20th century. Check out some of Sonia Delaunay’s designs. Granted, hers were usually circles or squares rather than stripes.

Chevrons always scream 1920s to me, so maybe that’s it, too. I’m a sucker for 20s fashion. :-)

Lol. So many people are “amazed” at this “seamless”  blend of Missoni with Target! It’s regular target crap with Missoni print on it, nothing more. Whether one likes it is a matter of opinion but it’s hardly some design triumph. Nothing about the products’ design changed, just the veneer. Designers do these diffusion lines to make money, and this kind of “design” is cheap and easy and pretty much guaranteed to sell. That’s why they do it. Relative to the entire population, hardly anyone wears designer clothing, and fashion week RTW lines do not support global brand presence and expenditures – cheap shit like perfumes, accessories and lines like this do. McQ for Target was garbage, shitty t-shirts etc, it sold out immediately, and trust that no one at Alexander McQueen ever raised a finger to get it done. These lines are designed and manufactured by the retailer, not the designer’s name on it. I like the floral scarf, dishes and bike. That’s about it, and that’s better than most diffusion lines. I liked a lot of +J, Jil Sander’s line for Uniqlo, but that shit was made in dwarf sizes. TINY.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=688150598 Elizabeth Siegel

I’m not speaking for Target, but as a Target team member (I work there), I recommend, ladies, that if there is ANYTHING that you really, really want, get to Target at 8 AM on September 13 when the collections goes on the floor. This is a limited edition collection and the items will go fast, I’m thinking, because this is one of the better collaborations I’ve seen. After our inventory is gone, we probably won’t be getting any more in. Also keep your eyes on Target.com. There are often more high-end items online for the designer collaborations. Enjoy!

      • http://summerborn.livejournal.com/ Summer Born

Thanks so much for this. I’m actually going to be in thhe market for some home decor in September, and I’d be sad if everything was gone before I could even browse  :)

    • http://www.lindamerrill.com Linda Merrill

Question. “Missoni for Target will be available Sept. 13 through Oct. 22, 2011 at all Target stores and Target.com.”  Does this mean that it’s all only available for 5 weeks and then poof it’s gone? I’d gotten the housewares press releases but didn’t pay close attention to that. Seems a lot of work for such a short selling period, although it adds to hype. Or, do they mean it will become available after 9/13 and no later than 10/22?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=688150598 Elizabeth Siegel

Again, I’m not speaking for Target as a corporation but only as someone who works there, I believe that what’s remaining of the collection will go on clearance on or before October 22, which means that we won’t be getting any more in. Or, it could mean that even all of the clearance has to be gone by October 22 so that we can roll out winter stuff. I highly recommend that you grab what you want as quickly as you can.

    • Anonymous

Love it, but as a guy, I’m REALLY DISAPPOINTED that there aren’t any beautiful sweaters like that first entry. I’d love that, pattern, color, or how bout a sweater vest like the bathing suit? C’mon Target!

    • Anonymous

Ooohohohoho, those rainboots are MINE. I can never ever find rainboots that don’t look completely tacky and awful to me and as a result have not owned a pair since I was twelve. (I once completely broke my heart over a patent black pair by Burberry with angry looking metal studs all around the top. Not in anyone’s budget, in any way.) These I could do, though. Must make a note to actually get around to buying them before they disappear.

I also love the bike, but there’s no reason for me to be buying a bike right now. Plus, my bike hipster friends would probably eat me alive.

They better have those rain boots in kids size because I want a pair of each for my daughter.

Cups and saucers.  And I may have to get a laptop just so I have a reason to buy the laptop case.

    • Mez Charney

I want the bike and the tea cups. The clothing isn’t really my style, but I do like the ties and the scarves.

    • Jolene Barnett

I want the baby jammies, and the stacking cups. I would want some of the clothes, but I’m plus sized and I know they not going to make that shit in special sizes. I might be able to weasel into one of the sweaters if they go to the standard target XXL (the highest they go before it officially becomes “plus” at target).

Let me get this straight. These will be available in-store for 5 weeks? Mkay. I like a couple of pieces though I’d never wear them together as they’re shown and I am coveting that blanket. We’ll see if any of this makes it to the Target in my neck of the woods.

    • Anonymous

I like a lot of it, but if I’m spending $600 at Target, there better be gigs, RAM, or HD involved.

OMG! I saw this on a flyer in the breakroom last month and got really excited then and finally seeing some of the pieces is just making me squee. Missoni and Target are almost a perfect match and I hope it goes really well. The pieces just scream Missoni, and I know I’ll be loading be loading up on those neckties, but I hope theres a little more menswear than that, lol.

I want everything!  Not the baby clothes, because my kids are too big for them, but definitely an outfit for each of us.  I can see myself wearing the first one at work, and my oldest daughter would like the long sleeve shirt with jeans.  Love the scarves, cushions and luggage.  The only thing I find a little silly is the bike.

It screams Missoni and so is to my eye a clear bulls-eye for Target (pun intended, of course).  It’s a touch youthful for this middle-aged bitter kitten so I probably won’t be buying any of it.
