Lady Gaga in Versace

Posted on August 15, 2011

Stefani got her Donatella on in a big, big way recently.

Lady Gaga leaves a recording studio in Los Angeles.

Lady Gaga at her home in Los Angeles.

Part of us questions the thinking behind the idea that when you wear a Versace dress, you should make yourself up to look like a Donatella Versace impersonator. Although we are a little titillated by the idea now. If she goes through a Chanel phase will she dress like Coco or Karl? This could be a fun project for her, dressing up like the most famous names behind the clothes she’s wearing. We look forward to her Prada phase because as much as we love that Miuccia, elegant she ain’t.

Still, we kinda love her in both these looks. Her role-playing tendencies have gotten more pronounced lately as she rolls around in the world of fashion. We really hope this persona lasts a while. It’s cartoon fashion.

Of the two looks, we love the black dress more. It’s chic and sharp and bold. The second look is almost too literal. You can see women walking around South Beach in knockoffs looking exactly like this. We salute it for its parodic feel, but the first look is more striking and fun.

Hot ginger handler remains hot.

she looks fabulous in both but yeah i prefer the black

You’re right. Really fun idea. I think the Coco Chanel look on her would be amazing. Just hope she doesn’t show up somewhere looking like Michael Kors … or the very un-glamorous Vera Wang. Her best accessory here is the two bodyguards. They’re both hot, in a completely understated sexy way. I can even get past the moobs the one on the left has.

Oh my god, forget the celebrity, I want more pics of the handler!

I think she looks great in the first dress.  And it would be great if she dresses like the designers.  She re-invents herself all the time – that way she would be reinventing herself to look classy and perhaps elegant.

So basically, what we’ve got here is a real-life version of the children’s classic “Ruby the Copy Cat”. In the role of Ruby, we have Stefani Germanotta and in the role of Angela, we have whoever strikes her fancy at any given moment.

Is mimicry style? Is that what you get a style icon award for?

Regardless, at least she looks good, even if it underscores her lack of ingenuity. Been a while since I could at least say that about her.

I don’t think she’s really being a literal Donatella impersonator. If she were, she’d be orange.

I’m always a little taken aback at how relatively quickly she morphed from “outsider” dressing weird and sticking up for her shunned Little Monsters to this, um, what? J-Lo in the making? Nicole Kidman as fashion model? I mean, god bless her for being able to afford (or borrow or get gifted) all this but it’s just lost any edge and now is just straight up retail.

Lady Gaga in normal attire? Whaa???

While I like the print on the first dress, it sure makes her look shapeless. I much prefer the shape on the second dress. Her makeup and shades are much better in the first look, though.

it’s better she does en hommage to donatella than the pure steals she was previously doing from the dead, or the merely buried-in-life. i like this much more. for real.

she musta asked them to lighten her hair slightly to get the ruin of bleach she did in the second outfit. bleach will do that, but only overbleach & generally not if you have a stylist on staff. it’s likely from that photo that the front of her head is real & the rest extensions. this comes, of course, w/ cash–anyone who has less than she has had {& who has also had platinum hair} will recognize, if sadly, its condition in photo-op 2.

      • Anonymous

You speak the truth. I had platinum hair every summer for almost ten years. I usually wore it Annie Lennox-style, but grew it out for a year and a half for my wedding. Wet, bleached out hair feels like overcooked spaghetti.

Anyway, I think she looks fabulous *and* beautiful. Love both dresses, although I prefer the first one. I like the sunglasses she’s wearing with the black dress. The other pair are too blingy for my taste. And the nails are a hoot.

I doubt she’s no longer the woman who will wear a meat dress, but this is a nice change.

I love this. Mostly because she’s being so hilariously derivative/ironic. I’m reading Steve Martin’s latest novel and in it he describes Andy Warhol & how in the beginning people loved him for his irony/and the fact that they were in on the joke: “This is irony, and I’m just kidding” seemed to be what he was saying but that changed and soon his stance was: “This is irony and I’m NOT kidding.” Martin noted later in that chapter that a lot of Warhol’s work seems “dead.” These looks of Lady Gaga’s made me instantly think of that passage. These looks are hilarious IF they are “irony and she’s kidding” but maybe, just maybe it’s “irony, and she’s NOT kidding” which actually, is kind of sad. Wow, sorry to get so philosophical!

I’d like to see her get away from weird performance art clothing and into the edgy side of real fashion. These are great examples. Can’t wait for the Coco Chanel phase!

    • Anonymous

I have a feeling that Coco will not get this kind of treatment, being a nazi and all.

Anyway, love the first dress. Second dress? No. Belt is ugly, snakeskin is over, hair and shades make me Not Happy.

I love that dress with the scroll motif.  Loved it in the collection, love the way she’s WERQing it here.

(and to really be Donatella, she’d need to be orange and have lips that frighten small children.)

I absolutely LOVE that first dress, and the shades!  What a killer outfit.

Query whether Versace makes that dress in plus sizes.  I may be fat but I am tall and I could pull that look off.  :)

Well, she’s mentioned numerous times that she dislikes L.A. in general. She’s obviously just there for work. I believe she’s already high-tailed it back to New York.

Uh, I guess I’m alone here in thinking that Donatella Versace might be glamorous in dress and hair but she sure isn’t pretty!  Whenever I see her, I’m kind of horrified.  GaGa looks much better.

      • Anonymous

No, you’re not alone. Her skin is fried from over tanning, and those lips of hers scare me. I’m completely horrified when I see her.

She really looks good here; better than Donatella almost stunning in the black dress.  Instead of the white polos and jeans as a uniform the handlers should wear g-strings and engineer boots.  Unique bodyguard ensembles  to take care of a unique woman.
