Lady Gaga in Salvatore Ferragamo

Posted on August 03, 2011

Everyone’s got opinions about Gaga and sometimes we think the internet was invented just so everyone gets the chance to express them, but we’ll say this about the old girl:

Lady Gaga arriving at the studios of the talk show “The View” in New York in Salvatore Ferragamo.

Salvatore Ferragamo Fall 2011 Collection/Model: Bianca Balti

Salvatore Ferragamo Fall 2011 Handbag

She knows how to work a theme.

Random thoughts:

We’re loving the new fashionista-style Gaga. It’s fun. Like a cartoon version of Miranda Priestley crossed with Cruella De Vil.

She pivoted away from the transhuman “Born This Way” stuff pretty hard, didn’t she? Not an egg or horn in sight for months.

Her ginger handler’s kind of hot, no?

We don’t know if those are very sheer stockings (probably not, since she had the same design painted on her face; although it wouldn’t be the first time she wore a stocking on her head) or she got some tattoos out of a vending machine, but if those are hose, they’re pretty fabulous.

      What, no screams about matchy-matchy?

      • http://profiles.google.com/vispreeve Daniel Vispreeve

This is beyond matchy-matchy – this explosion of same (houndstooth) pattern is meant to be a joke, a parody, a cartoonish interpretation of fashion.

        • Terence Ng

Or just bad taste/banal fashion decisions that incidentally comes across as parody. Phew!

        • Anonymous

I always appreciate a good cartoonish interpretation of fashion.

          • Anonymous

Especially when the parody is aimed at the queen of houndstooth, Elisabeth Hasselbitch. She was definitely the brunt of Gaga’s wardrobe joke. A joke only she could pull off.

I thought Mondo was the queen of houndstooth.

Holy cow, I just noticed the fingernails… the girl knows how to commit, that’s for sure.

    • Anonymous

I think I like the effort, or the aesthetic, but somehow she looks awful to me. The proportions of the suit make her look like a shrunken, ancient crazy woman. An Olsen twin, actually.

      • Anonymous

That’s what I was thinking; a crazy bag lady (the kind with enough money to buy Ferragamo). Just like an Olsen twin. It looks sexy on the model and ridiculous on her.

    • Anonymous

I’ve always been a sucker for black & white houndstooth.  I would totally wear that dress, bag, and those shoes (although not all at the same time).

Props to her manicurist – I can only imagine how time consuming painting houndstooth would be!

I think Sally Hansen has a nail polish stick on in black and white houndstooth.  So all of us can have those great nails!

I’m someone who loves stuff that matches, but there’s matching, and then there’s just haphazardly wrapping yourself in a bolt of fabric from head to toe.  This comes a little too close to the latter.

    • Anonymous

If only her handler wore a matching tie…..

If you are going to match everything, then why not carry it out to the extreme.  This look wouldn’t work in any real life situation, but it looks pretty fab on Lady GaGa.

      • Anonymous

Absolutely, I agree with you. The fashion is often fabulous and the looks she comes with such as this is about having fun and being different in this rule driven world. I thought she was a joke when she first hit the scene but now I like some of her music and really admire her style. I think she’s way better than the often compared to Madonna…in style, in humor, and most certainly in talent.

        • Anonymous

You’re not the only one who thought she was a joke. My friend was out on Fire Island and she was playing at some little place there. This was before she made it big, of course, and he and his friends saw that name and said, “Gaga?? What the hell? No thanks, let’s just catch the ferry back early.” He says he still wants to kick himself for that.

      • Lori

It was so extreme, she had her piano covered in the fabric too.  Luv her!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

Love the glasses too.  Love the look and love how it makes her look like a cartoon.  Fab.

    • http://twitter.com/megelizah Megan Howard

I don’t think anything will ever make me find lady gaga anything more than obnoxious. clearly her whole shindig is working for a lot of people but yeah.. nothing.
Her ginger handler however does looking appealing.. and, although apparently Gaga is hardly over 5 feet the guy in the blue suit behind her looks like a giant..

    • Maria Rosenfire

See, I don’t have an opinion on Lady Gaga. I honestly don’t care about her and her schtick one way or the other. Her music is okay and danceable (but not groundbreaking), her clothes range from interesting to to stupid, and her public persona is mildly irritating, but not so bad that I really hate her.

I quite like this particular outfit– I think that her recent fashion choices are much more interesting than the super-gimmicky stuff that she was doing before. It’s still gimmicky, but I find it more endearing than irksome, at least for now.

Also, I really want a houndstooth manicure. A lot.

      • http://karensbooksandchocolate.blogspot.com/ Karen K.

I actually saw her on The Graham Norton show and she really seemed like a nice, sweet person.

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Go to Target and buy the Sally Hansen Nail Polish Strips — they have houndstooth as one of the options.  In fact, they have a lot of patterns, and they work great.  It’s all I wear anymore because it’s so much easier and longer lasting than most standard salon manicures I’ve had:)

    • Heather Yarnell

Her shtick has gotten so boring. And this is coming from somebody who loves houndstooth.

    • Sara__B

When she performed, her piano was houndstooth as well.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=513945580 Megan Patterson

That ginger handler’s awful close too, you think they’re doing it?

    • http://twitter.com/mollynoodles Molly Harrington

I have to admit, I basically love this. Gaga should definitely keep going in the direction she’s been heading lately. It’s different and outgoing, while still being actually stylish. I love it.

    • Susan Crawford

Well, someone loves her some houndstooth, doesn’t she? I do, too, and I think Gaga is werqing the whole look to perfection. Love the hat, the shoes, the purse and please let there be someone at a hosiery design atelier creating stockings with that sort of pattern! I think the leg “pattern” was probably painted on, but whatever – I must have stockings like this SOON! I loved the piles of pearls, too. And the glasses? I. Am. Awed.

      • Anonymous

I don’t think those are stockings, I think they are temp tattoos or just painted on.  If they are stockings they are incredibly sheer and thin, you can see a lot of very natural “flaws” on her legs and ankles for them to be stockings.

        • Susan Crawford

I think so, too. I meant painted onto her skin – but for those of us who aren’t up for leg painting, I am hoping that this can be translated into stockings. I have to say, I loved this whole look, head to toe. Gaga is looking fabulous here!

          • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=25715566 Jessica Oakes

To me they look like stockings.  The lack of texture on her knees make it look that way to me.  No one has naturally smooth knee caps, no one.

        • Susan Crawford

I think so, too. I meant painted onto her skin – but for those of us who aren’t up for leg painting, I am hoping that this can be translated into stockings. I have to say, I loved this whole look, head to toe. Gaga is looking fabulous here!

About a week ago, I decided that my must-have item this winter was going to be a houndstooth peacoat. Gaga is clearly stealing my fashion ideas.
That is not a sentence well-adjusted people get to use very often.

    • Judy_J

She’s taken matchy-matchy to a whole new level.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

      Those sunglasses are epic.  LUV.

    • Anonymous

She beats the dead horse, lights in on fire, wears it, then later has it turned into jerky for her rapidly aging Little Monsters.

    • Anonymous

How could anyone not love this? She seems so fun, and that obviously translates to her clothes. Clearly, none of us are going to get up and pull this out of closets for our 9-5. But Gagaloo doesn’t hop in her Honda Civic Hybrid and head to the office, now does she. I love it because her face is so serious, and yet she is smothered in houndstooth. I hope the next time we see here she’s head to-to-toe in tartan.

    • aussiegal77

Hahaha I love this outfit!  Except the glasses!  Which are clearly overkill.  She should have adhered to the Chanel rule – take off one thing before she headed out.

Yes, I am entirely aware of how this all sounds.  Still though – fab!  Bitch can work a theme – agree.

      • Anonymous

It’s Lady Gaga… I think she adds one thing before she heads out.

It looks like she has little chickens on her legs — or am I seeing things?

It’s a not chickens, it’s the black sections of houndstooth.  But my husband swears my houndstooth nails look like the little space ships from Space Invaders.

Gaga’s Ginger Handler looks photoshopped in, like they’re in two different worlds.

Ginger handler can handle me any day.  I have a huge weakness for redheads (that sounded kind of dirty didn’t it?).

Oh…I forgot I was suppose to be looking at Gaga.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, redheads are pretty fabulous.  ;-)

    • Anonymous

Oh, this outfit made me laugh happily!  Love, love, love it.

    • Anonymous

Eh, it’s… interesting.  I’m not wild about this incarnation of the GA.  I get the whole “everything matches so it’s ironic” but that hat is just frumpy, ugly and out of scale to the dress and necklace sale rack from Claire’s Boutique that is attacking her neck.  The dress cut fit the model much better, you get a better sense of the wrap design.  And the aforementioned necklaces are overkill, obscuring the neckline.
But I do LOVE that houndstooth ensemble on the model.

    • Terence Ng

She looks good. I guess her deep and meaningful art got boring even to her.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_T24URKJGBLJQPBWCRPU37IIHLU Krab Louse

Just so you know, “ginger” is considered derogatory in Britain.  If you use the term over here, you’ll get a few raised eyebrows from intelligent people and the “lowlifes” will probably laugh or not notice.  Sure, it sounds “snobby” but just think if you dropped the “n” word in during conversation – it isn’t the equivalent of course -  you’d know the company you’re keeping.

      • Anonymous

What does it mean, then, and what was the deal with the whole Ginger Spice thing?

        • Saoirse Lee

It’s only derogatory if used with a derogatory tone, or deliberately utilised in an insulting way. You could describe someone as having ginger hair but if you called them “a ginger”, that could be taken as a slur, especially if you pronounced it as rhyming with minger (means an ugly person, itself rhymes with winger).

Some redheaded people take it on with pride, sort of subverting it, as in Ginger Spice.

Anyway, her poor minder doesn’t look built for that sunshine with his Celtic complexion, he’s a delicate shade of boiled lobster.

love the look from head to toe but i had to go back & check out her ginger bodyguard since i didnt even notice him!

    • Joyce VG

Hot Ginge Handler alert!  I like the new fashionista Lady Gaga. I think she listened and heeded the opinions of those that were saying she was on her way out as a superstar. I love the houndstooth, especially on nails and glasses.

    • Anonymous

Awww.  I love that her knee caps are bruised!  She fell down and has a boo-boo!

But I digress.  I love houndstooth, I really do.  I remember that McQueen collection from a few years ago that made me weep.  And J’ADORE the hat and glasses!  I have to draw the line at a houndstooth manicure, even for the Gaga.

I too am very glad that within the past few months she’s steered clear of the uber crazy fashion. I mean this is still unique and very ‘her’ but it’s not too over the top. It doesn’t appear like she’s trying too hard here. That is not something I could’ve said about her in the beginning.

    • Anonymous

It’s dashed demure for Gaga especially with the strands of pearls filling the deep V at the front but I’m sure Barbara approved. Gaga’s schtick is pushing things to the limit – and beyond – and this seemed just about the right touch for a show like The View. How many other guests put that much effort into their appearance for a daytime show. The houndstooth on her leg was also repeated above and below her right eye but I must admit I was a tad disappointed with the hat and felt she could have really pushed that OTT.

Here’s the thing about people like Lady Gaga.  If it were anyone else, we’d be all over her case for being “too matchy-matchy” (I mean, cryin’ out loud, she even has houndstooth fingernails), but she’s not a person, she’s a persona.  She is always on stage and in costume, so different rules apply.

Speaking of Elizabeth Hasselbitch, Lady Gaga and this look, didn’t Gaga just sport this on the View the other day? It was on at the gym and I saw the last minute of the show. I’m not a Gaga fan, although I’ve gotten used to her music through my spin class. :) I read an account of her appearance on The View, and she sounds a lot more grounded and sensible than I would have thought. Apparently they were talking about Tim Gunn’s comment on Hilary Clinton’s pantsuits, and Gaga said that Clinton clearly has more important things to worry about than her hemline.

She really commits to her outfit, doesn’t she? This is a fabulous look–love those glasses. I’m not crazy about the shape of the hat, though. It looks like a flying saucer landed on her head.

    • Gwen Schott

This was taken the day that she guest hosted on “The View” … she had also taken the time to put the same houndstooth pattern on the back of her notecards. I don’t think it translated well on TV.

I wonder if her underwear was houndstooth. I bet she tried to put the nail decals on her teeth. Would have worn houndstooth lipstick if she could have figured out how. Too much of a good thing for me.

I think she’s pulling off a total Elton John vibe with me, what with the patterned piano, funky eyeglasses and crazy outfit that only she can pull off. I love this outfit here, LOVE that she painted her leg to create an illusion that she’s wearing tights (she’s not), and I must have those Sally Hansen houndstooth nails now. She certainly knows how to sell an outfit. I kind of actually want the sunglasses, too.

I like this incarnation of Gaga’s style a lot better, too. Although, I woke up with a migraine today, so I can’t stare at this outfit too long.

Ginger Handler sounds like Chelsea’s sister.

Wait!  Why is her nail polish RED in one picture and houndstooth in another?

      • Anonymous

The red polish is on a model. It is a close-up of a runway shot.

So…the ginger is okay, but who is the giant hulk behind her?

    • Anonymous

The only real problem is that the hat is too small and out of proportion to the size of the check and the statement. Otherwise she’s spot-on for what she’s trying to achieve.

      LOVE.
For me, it’s not the glasses, it’s the hosiery that put that perfect final stamp on this. Or, if they’re not stockings & just faux tattoos, it’s the cascade of ‘pearls.’
      LOVE.

Just a little too much for me….get rid of the glasses, nails, and leg paint and I’d be dying over this.

Lose the bag, glasses and hat and it screams FAB! Love, love, love the leg ink.

The minder is okay I guess.   I’m married to my own hot ginger, he’s even a bit taller.  =)

I think her music is basically Madonna Jr. but damn if she isn’t entertaining as hell.  Those sunglasses make me love her a little bit.
