Kristen Stewart for W Magazine

Posted on August 12, 2011

While we were smack in the middle of watching and live-tweeting last night’s Project Runway, Lorenzo did the gay gasp, looked up from his laptop, and momentarily channeled one of our teenage nieces.

“OhmigoddidyouseeKristenStewart? In W? Ohmigodshelooksamazing!”

Tom, totally used to these sorts of outbursts and in mid-tweet, said, “Mmm. We’ll do that tomorrow, then. Did you remember to finish your homework and put in your retainer?”

“Shut up. I hate this family.”

Max Mara’s mohair and wool sweater.

But that little drama queen was right. She really does look astonishingly good.
Kristen Stewart for the September issue of W magazine
Photographed by Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott
Styled by Edward Enninful.
Hair by Luigi Murenu for John Frieda.
Makeup by Lucia Pieroni for Clé de Peau Beauté.

On having a particular interest in vampires: “I f—— love me a vampire [Laughs]. I was 17 when I read Twilight, and at the time it was so perfect for me. The script was about young kids who think they can handle stuff that they just can’t. And they’re going to do it anyway. Because, why not? Just torture yourself. I relate to that. Vampires are a little dangerous – and we girls like to test ourselves.”

On saying goodbye to Bella: “I’d been anticipating that end-of-Bella moment. I was going, Oh, my God—I wonder how I’m going to feel. And the last scene of the shoot was at the wedding. Every single character was there on set. At the end of that day, I was kind of whacked. And so I never really had that moment then. Instead, it happened later. We needed to film one more sort of honeymoon scene and we went to the Virgin Islands. After that scene, my true final scene, I felt like I could shoot up into the night sky and every pore of my body would shoot light. I felt lighter than I’ve ever felt in my life.”

On watching herself onscreen: “It’s not like I sit around watching my movies again and again, but I’ve never quite believed actors when they say they don’t watch themselves. I hear them going around the block to make excuses for why they don’t watch their work. It’s bulls—. Sorry, guys – I know you watch your stuff.”

No real thoughts on the interview bites. You guys dissect them. Truth be told, she’s never struck us a particularly interesting person. That’s not exactly rare among stars, but she either doesn’t do a very good job of hiding it or takes a more refreshing approach of not really giving a shit. It depends on how inclined you are to like her, we guess.

For us, unsurprisingly, it’s all about the pics:

Gucci’s silk chiffon gown.

Asprey 18k yellow gold, citrine, orange sapphire, and diamond ring.

Theory’s Scotia angora polyamide blend sweater.

Junya Watanabe’s leather motorcycle jacket; Dolce & Gabbana’s silk bodysuit. Elizabeth and James sterling silver bangle set.

We wouldn’t suggest she adopt this look for public appearances. It’s a bit too Ann-Margret by way of RuPaul’s Drag Race to be a workable real-world (or as “real-world” as the red carpet gets) look.

But damn, is it fierce.

They are great pics but, aside from the one with the ring, they look very similar to a recent Lindsey Lohan shoot.  Can’t they come up with another way to shoot young stars?

    • Anonymous

Yes! She looks like Lindsey doing Elizabeth Taylor.

    • Anonymous

I also got a Lohan vibe, especially in the angora. But not only does she look stunning period, she’s someone who has never really looked like she put much effort in, which brings this from what would have been a very, very good shoot for someone else to a level of excellence for her. I didn’t know she could emote as much as she does in these pictures!

She is giving great face, here for sure!  And she is well suited to the big hair and heavy eye makeup!  I haven’t seen her acting work but have only seen her red carpet appearances via T Lo, looking mighty uncomfortable.  Here I see two - no, maybe even three – facial expressions!  Good for you, darling!

She looks great, but they did the same thing to Lindsay Lohan, so it makes me feel like it’s the makeup more than anything. Actually, that first pic reminds me a lot of these images:

She looks pretty fab, but please–put the front teeth away!!!!

    • Loisada

Hell to the no! Those front teeth are fierce and real, just like the young lady. Bring on the bite Kristen!

This is a lesson in how the image-making machine molds raw human material, and shows that if Stewart had stooped to being just another pretty girl, she could have been rocking the sex kitten all along. She’s never needed the styling to shine, but when she lends herself to it, she sets the rest of the herd to shame!

Nice to see her growing up and assuming her sensuousness on her own terms, instead of letting it and industry expectations define her and her career. Fab Kristen…. gnarly fab!

That’s interesting because I thought she was on record saying she hated the Twilight books and thought they were stupid. She looks gorgeous here though.

Not sure what “record” you’re referring to, but Kris has never said anything of the sort.

I heard the same, but I’m also sure that that series is over (thank my dear and fluffly Lord) and she’d like to get another job.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QYTMWU64DPETQZZL5XYGO2TFWM Orla

Many of her fans who aren’t devoted to that dreadful series, cannot wait till she rids herself from it. It doesn’t showcase her talent at all. Anyone who doubts her acting ability needs to watch The Runaways or even Welcome to the Rileys. Excited for ‘On The Road next year, too.

        • Anonymous

She was excellent in The Runaways. She has a very subtle Something that interviews and overly obvious scripts like Twilight don’t show at all. I don’t have strong feelings about her either way but I am interested, and interested to see her turn as Snow White.

  • katie conroy

ps: This isn’t channeling Lindsay. It’s the 60′s vixen look that is often used to in spreads cause it’s so glamorous. All stars have gotten the valley of the dolls makeover at some point, Kristen’s just worked out particularly well since we’re so used to seeing her look like a street urchin with no makeup. lol

She looks like a brunette Amber Heard. That said, definitely the best pictures she has ever taken. Very Ann Margret meets Barbarella aged Jane Fonda.

I probably wouldn’t have known it was her if her name weren’t on the cover. She looks absolutely stunning in these pics. A total transformation, which is really fun to see.  From the interview excerpts, it sounds like she is doing a better job of being relate-able.

Somewhat surprised, although pleased, that her two front teeth weren’t photoshopped. I’ve noticed she has her mouth closed in many of her photos but I thought that was because she had a bit of an attitude towards the press.

I agree with the Priscilla Presley comments, and I like the editorial a lot, very fierce, and definitely showing a side of her I didn’t know existed. I have to say though, either publicists are getting extremely savvy in making clients sound “real” and honest, or she is actually a reasonably level-headed person with whom I wouldn’t mind having a conversation.

I scrolled down & immediately shouted OH SH**!
    Wow.
I don’t know what they (stylists, publicists, agents, makeup/hair artist) did, but she’s giving breathtaking face in these photos.

GT: You hit it on the quintessential head: PP circa the beehive wedding pix.

  • Anonymous

She looks gorgeous, but I would never have recognized her. The third picture (against the wall with the sweater) is the only one where I think she looks remotely like herself. I’m not sure if it’s just because it turns out her face is more versatile than I thought it was and they went a very different direction from her usual, or what; but it’s weirding me out.

  • Anonymous

She must have serious allergies, because I have never seen her with her mouth closed. Otherwise, the hair/makeup team deserves a raise and spa gift certificates, because they actually made her look like she has a personality and not just a sullen check-out girl whose parents came into the store, and insisted on talking to her in public.

  • Tracy Archuleta

Considering how wooden and typical I find her acting, she gives suprisingly good face.  It’s a nice change; I look forward to see how she works her image post-Twilight.

I’m not sure how I feel about an actress who looks beautiful in a piece like this, but also looks totally unrecognizable. How good is it for it to be gorgeous but absolutely not *her*? This is a legit question, by the way. Is it good, in general, for everybody’s first reaction to be “Wonderful pictures, but I would never know that was [blank]/”

    • Anonymous

I don’t think it’s a good thing at all. She looks amazing, but she looks like every other woman who is styled like a big haired sex kitten. I don’t particularly understand Ms. Stewart’s appeal, but I prefer how she normally looks to this.

Gorgeous, but why oh why does every female fashion shoot consist of 90-100 percent open-mouthed shots? Seriously, every single one. It is like they decided that open mouth equals sexxxxaaaay, and that is all they will publish. Guys seem to have their mouths shut for the most part. Really irritating.

Her confidence is improving with age, and I truly hope she gets the freedom she so clearly craves once she rids herself from this dreadful saga. If she can, she is certain destined for brighter, better things- and she deserves every bit of success.

Big eyes, open mouth, face totally relaxed. Put in a hand there, touch lower lip with thumb (twice!), look up instead of staring livelessly into oblivion. No mimic, no emoting. She might be as popular as she is because she is the ultimate empty canvas, where young girls can project all their… young girl-stuff upon.

Seriously, look at that first pic (or the fourth from the bottom, depending on where you start counting) and tell me that isn’t LiLo in her brunette phase.
Why even bother with real people anymore? Just animate your generic pretty, pretty female and stick her on your “editorial” pages.

    Best she’s ever looked.  Wow!

She looks freakin’ gorgeous here and this is from someone who can barely tolerate her. Beautiful and sexy. Two words I wouldn’t normally associate with her. Well done!

  • Cristin Colvin

She reminds me of the actress who plays Jane in Mad Men, especially in the Gucci.

First I started coming around to Katy Perry, now I love a Kristen Stewart editorial. I expect to see apocalyptic horsemen outside my window any day now.

She at least seems to be more gracious in interviews. The pics are fabulous-she looks beautiful and animated. Maybe since the Twilight stuff if finally wrapped up, we’ll get to see her in something interesting. I liked her in Panic Room and Speak.

I’ve always thought she was vapid and flat.   She’s got more behind her eyes in this shoot than I’ve ever seen before.

Problem is that she looks more like Lindsay Lohan than she does herself.   Except the second pic.  That’s her real upper lip look.

Oh. Wow. So she can pull a face other than sneery, bored grunge grrrrl. Why didn’t she dust this one off and bring it out earlier?

Doesn’t she seem to be a little bit — plastic?

She really good here. Who knew she could be more than a blank slate.

Stunning.  She has such a beautiful, delicate, sumptuous face and she never does anything with it.  She just smears it in some drab make up and shrouds it in some messy hair, and schlumpz out of the house.  It’s nice to see this girl FINALLY playing it up.  I hope she learns something from this shoot!

fierce styling, still horrible actress. i have close to zero respect for people who think she’s attractive/talented.

I would have never recognized her! She really does look like Priscilla Presley – her makeup is beautiful.
