Kathy Griffin for Schön! Magazine

Posted on August 10, 2011

Here’s something you don’t see every day: Kathy Griffin in a fashion editorial. Even more surprising, it’s being played straight. Sure, she’s clowning it up a little bit, but it’s still all about making her look glamorous. We love the shot of her in the Vivienne Westwood. She should consider that look for the next red carpet, right down to (or up to) the hat. And while she’s got an impressive body that she worked hard on and is quite justifiably proud of, there seems to be some rather egregiously bad photoshopping, especially in the picture where she’s wearing the Elie Saab. A shame, because it still would have been a great editorial without whittling her waist down to Barbie proportions.

      How cute! Long overdue, IMO.

      Wow! Styled by Taylor Jacobson!

      Good for both parties.

    • Brooke Sample

Before I clicked on the story, I thought it was Jennifer Aniston! Can’t tell if I’ve had too much caffeine today or something …

      • yuju ti

If I didn’t know this is a Kathy Griffin entry, I would’ve thought the gal in that Vivian Westwood dress was Sarah Jessica Parker. I have the same doubt you have…..

    • Sam Corbett

That Elie Saab photoshopping is HORRENDOUS. It looks like someone took an ice cream scooper to her torso. Love the other photos, though – that Vivienne Westwood is great.

      • Anonymous

ice cream scooper says it all, ugh. NOBODY IS SHAPED LIKE THAT. what art director put their approval stamp on THAT? it looks like student work in a beginner adobe class.

      • Anonymous

I know, it’s ridiculous. Alien torso.

      • Anonymous

Thank GOD I’m not the only person whose reaction was, WHAT DID THAT PHOTOSHOPPER DO?? There is similarly something distinctly off about the proportions of her head to her torso in the last photo. She seems like a lovely lady in her own right. They didn’t need to go to those lengths.

    • Sheila Luther

I think she looks great in the VW.  But her face/head/hair looks weird in the short, black D&G.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000060490093 Anita Freiler Palmer

Yes, it looks as though the back of her skull has been photoshopped out….

        • http://www.facebook.com/rachel.council Rachel Council

Jesus. Is a fat skull another thing we have to worry about?

      • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

Ok good, it wasn’t just me!

      • Anonymous

She looks like Jane Seymour there. So odd.

    • Anonymous

They photo shopped her head, too, in the picture where she is wearing the black D&G.  It looks oddly misshapen.  Love the clothes though.

      • MilaXX

I can’t tell if that’s bad photoshopping or a bad weave. She naturally has a bit of a fivehead which is why she often wears bangs, so that plus too much fluffly faker hair may be giving her head the odd shape.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

She looks like a drag queen version of herself in that one!

I was thinking the same thing about her face in the last pic. It looks like she got stuck between elevator doors.

They even carved up her head…look at that last picture!!  Despite all that… it’s fun!!

      • Anonymous

Totally!  Her face is far too large for that frame of hair.

    • MilaXX

I thought she was pretty before the weight loss. The Vivienne Westwood is my fav. They ruined the line of the Ellie Saab with the crazy photoshopping job on her waist. love the D & G, but hate the Minnie Mouse pumps paired with it.

    • Anonymous

Such a lady. The Elie Saab and Dolce & Gabbana dresses are very flattering on her. Not impressed by the other photos of her, she’s funny we get it!

If she’s gonna flip people off, she needs to hold her other fingers down with her thumb.

    • Anonymous

Wow! LOVE the Vivienne Westwood shot–it’s perfect for her personality. And I love the sad clown in the first D&G shot too. There’s something Lucille Ball about it–very appealing. The rest? Well, it’s a shame is all. Kathy, really? You had to flip off the photographer? And the photoshopping is tragic. And so unnecessary. She looks deformed in the Elie Saab shot and her head is all squooshed, as others have pointed out.  Fire whoever did that to her!

      • Anonymous

Oh, I am SO over the “flipping the bird” shot. Even more than I’m over the “man standing behind my cupping my breasts in his hands” shot.

        • Anonymous

I’m with you.  It’s about 13 years old and SO RADICAL about 30 years ago.

        • Anne Robotti

I’m a little bit over the “man holding woman’s pregnant belly” shot. And… okay, I’m going out on a limb but I’m also over the staged “big brother/sister kissing Mommy’s pregnant belly” shot. And the “kid with food smeared all over their face” shot. And the “sexy ten year old” shot on FB.

          • Anonymous

Oh, the kid with food smeared on his/her face shot makes me ill. So does the sticking out my tongue because I’m so rock and roll shot.

        • Anonymous

I agree in principle, but the flipping the bird shot (or something similarly aggressive and/or vulgar) is also a cliche in the “successful but still insecure” comedian/comedienne role. If she hadn’t done that one there’d have been something else calculatedly vulgar or unattractive because god forbid, even today, a woman who makes people laugh for a living should just allow herself to be portrayed as pretty/glamorous.

    • Sobaika Mirza

Her head looks bigger than her waist in the Elie Saab. What.

    • Anonymous

I find her vulgar and uninteresting both on TV and in this editorial.

      • http://twitter.com/TheRedZavodnik Ginger

Glad I’m not the only one.  Her diatribe makes me wanna stab my ear drums with ice picks.

    • Toni Mitt

I *heart* KG a lot (and I’m a Republican!) and this is delightful.  I do agree about the disappointing photoshopping. But–she looks like she’s having a ball.

    • Anonymous

I’m just really over “working hard” for a body shape, can I say that? I worked hard for a body shape once and once I lost it, all I was left with was an eating disorder and related health problems. Maybe that’s TMI for a comment on a TLo post, but oh well.

      • Anonymous

I’m kind of over the “working hard” for a body shape, too. I’m really over the farce of the celebrity media pretending that they don’t work hard – and deny themselves a lot – for their bodies, and i’m MOST OF ALL over the implication that if I also don’t work hard *and* achieve that body shape too, I’m a worthless hideous human being. The episodes of D-List that I’ve seen when Kathy’s working on losing weight are disturbing, especially given how tiny she is already! However, the Westwood look here is incredible, but the photoshopping is jawdroppingly bad.

        • Anonymous

Yup, decided a few decades back that what I had to do to maintain a size 2 wasn’t worth the denial.  A few sizes bigger lets me enjoy food and feel normal again.  Took years to learn that bit of common wisdom!

      • Anonymous

I’m glad you said it. People like Kathy Griffin (and Joan Rivers) can pay for the best in nutrition, personal trainers, and plastic surgery, and yet be so mean about others’ looks. Has it occurred to them that even if we could all afford to invest that money, time, and energy, we don’t all have the same obsession with appearances that they do, and that in the end they’re just skinny nags who hate themselves?

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Elaine-Lang/100000366510311 Elaine Lang

I work hard for my body shape.    I mean, it takes a whole lot of “arm curls” to keep my impressive little gut going, if you know what I mean…and, I think you do.   :)

        • Anonymous

          you know I do! <3

        • Anne Robotti

You’ll get better results if you hold a pint of Ben & Jerry’s in each hand.

    • Scott Hester-Johnson

“And while she’s got an impressive body that she worked hard on…”

Yes, I suppose she worked hard on earning the money to PAY for that bodacious body (which she freely admits).

      • Anonymous

This was gonna be my reply, and you beat me to it!  Body she paid for…absolutely.  Maybe I’m jealous, ’cause there’s plenty of work I’d have done if I had her buckage!

        • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

lipo has to be redone & redone & redone & redone & redone & redone & redone & redone & redone & redone &, you know what? it doesnt work very well in the first place. & it hurts unimaginably. & it costs a fortune. & i used to have money, so i know. starvation works, i know that too, but it causes absolutely obsessive eating disorders &, you know what most of all? the best thing, the very best thing, the very best of bestest things of all would be if people could just accept, & be accepted for, who they are. now theres a goal.

      • http://www.adamherrington.com Adam Herrington

She’s admitted to getting lipo before and that it didn’t last. Bitch works out.

        • Anonymous

          That’s right.

    • Shawn Hill

That Elie Saab photo is tragic, but you’re so right about the Westwood. Buy that dress, Kathy!!!! You might make it to a royal wedding yet!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=6416893 Jenna Kuhmann

She is Photoshopped to within an inch of her life.  Some of those don’t even look like her.  But, it is a fun editorial and she should really get more of them.  I  was watching My Life on the D-List reruns yesterday and remembered how much I love her.

    • Tamara Hogan

She is rocking that Westwood gown as hard as it can be rocked. Whoever Photoshopped the Saab obviously failed Human Anatomy class.

    • Anonymous

Oh, Sarah Jessica Parker in a fashion shoot! Oh, wait….

      • Rand Ortega

LOL! I thought the same thing! Maybe it’s the photoshopping, but they should do a movie together– they could pass for sisters!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3KCDEX4FOTCFHZP6WLKSOOKUVM Danielle

      Love her!  Love these!

    • http://www.facebook.com/samuel.j.donovan Samuel Joesph Donovan

Photoshop Disasters all around.  Although, knowing Kathy Griffin, she probably told them to do it.

    • aimee_parrott

Love huh.  Totally agree re: the Westwood — that looks absolutely KILLAH on her.

Boo to bad photoshopping.  So unnecessary.

    • http://profiles.google.com/grandiva1968 e jerry powell

Kathy has her fake hair in!

But seriously, what colors are in the Westwood and the D&G?  It seems the stylist is playing it very safe by putting the pale Irish Catholic girl in all black.

      • Anonymous

SHE’S CATHOLIC???   like the Kennedy’s and Pelosi.

        • Anonymous

Born Catholic, she is an atheist, which she states freely.

    • http://profiles.google.com/grandiva1968 e jerry powell

And again with the head bigger than the waist.  It almost makes me want some government agency somewhere to ban Photoshop for pictures of models.

    • Anonymous

The creepy photoshopping is also pretty glaringly bad.  I mean the smoothness to it is positively amateur.  Kathy looks fabulous though, love the Westwood.

    • Anonymous

      Love her!

    • http://twitter.com/GQueen GQueen

Wow, that is some BAD photoshop in that Ellie Saab photo. Sheesh.

    • J Dreesen

i think the D&G pic looks more photoshopped than it actually may be, due to her obviously twisting her body sideways for the shot (look at the position of her legs).  that pose, coupled with the gigantic bow on the dress doing its thing with draping, can accentuate the smaller waist appearance to a fault.

not that there wasn’t anything done to the photo at all, but the picture was definitely not a “head-on” shot just because her face is pointed toward the camera.  if anything, i say they photoshopped the other side of her torso, perhaps removing some of the dress bulk, to make more negative space around her waist on that side of the photo…

    • Anne Lucchesi

Photoshop makes me sad. Not just the Elie Saab, but her face in that last picture! She looks great in the others, what happened there? They digi-slimmed her skull?

      • Anonymous

Come on, don’t you want a slim head?

    • Anonymous

      Can NOT  stand   her.

      and the Photoshopping was awful

The Vivienne Westwood is  great though

    • Anonymous

      LOVE her & the photos.

    • http://twitter.com/lauralexis Laura

Speaking of Photoshopping, what the hell is happening to her head in the last one? I can’t pinpoint what’s *wrong* but it’s certainly not *right*

      • Anonymous

That was exactly what I noticed first.  They’ve taken half of the back of her head off!

        • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

i think it’s the same production person fiddling w/ her hair. whoever did it reshaped her head, my tired but educated guess is cos the person couldnt figure out how to shape the hair. i have no idea what was going on in the particular “head area” but i can certainly see an inappropriate glow behind her head.

& if i can see it, the art director certainly could. to explain what was going on there, i would use the perennial “was on crack” but my guess is it was probably more like tweek. or powder. crack’s too downscale, tweek could be considered “on trend”.

edited cos i wrote this in two parts w/ a half hour in between them.

She looks fabulous! LOVE the Westwood.  But she should sue whoever photoshopped that picture of the Saab.  It makes her look deformed, and she looks awesome without having someone do that to her picture.

Whoa… she looks great but where did her waist go in that Elie Saab?!

      • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

it’s just a really bad temp production person, i think. it’s not just the size of the waist, it’s the dumbed-down way the photoshopping was done, like just one stupid vector mask, one pull o’ the pen to make a curve, then– out!

    • Anonymous

that Viviane Westwood dress is super great and they make her look fabulous in it, so bravo!

Then I scroll down and wonder what in the name of all that is good and sweet did they do to her head in the D&G dress photo?

    • Anonymous

She kind of looks like Kathie Lee in the finger shot.  That is not a compliment.

      • margaret meyers

Has she had more work done?  She isn’t looking like herself… neither is Angelina Jolie:  I thought she was Emily Blunt in some recent photos.

    • Anonymous

I love that she made them give her the title Supermodel in the credits. That and the Westwood dress are the best parts of this spread.

    • Robert Sanchez

Cute! I do think she’s doing a subtle poke in Sarah Jessica Parker’s direction with the shoot, though.

Schön looks like quite an “arty” magazine, and I have a feeling that the photoshopping is intentional… at least I hope so! It looks too overt to be otherwise. All of the photos seem to play with bodily proportions somewhat, except for the Westwood photo (in which her head still looks photoshopped to me). In Kathy’s seated photo, the proportion between her feet/legs and her torso must have been manipulated, either with a computer or a wide-angled lens. And the last two play quite freely with proportions and angles. Just look at the legs on the last photo, placed there as if they were simply cut out of another picture and placed on top of the D&G dress, like in a collage.

I’m taking it as an attempt at quirkiness, and probably a nod to Kathy, who has declared multiple times that she wants the “full treatment” so far as touch-ups are concerned in magazines.

    • Anonymous

I get the feeling the pictures would’ve looked a lot better without such bad Photoshopping. She’s interesting, why try to dampen that?

    • Anonymous

I’m pretty sure a good part of her skull is missing in photo #4. Anyway I think it’s a great editorial! Go Kathy!

Ewwww. Look how they photoshopped her head in the last pic.

    • Anonymous

Wow, that IS some bad photoshopping. The last picture looks like they lopped off the back end of her skull.

Other than that, they are very flattering and she’s living every comedienne’s dream here. But she has a lot more personality than is captured in these images.–GothamTomato

Photoshopping notwithstanding, the Vivienne Westwood is wonderful on KathyG! It captures her spirit, irreverence, and humour just perfectly.
