Kate Moss for Vogue UK

Posted on August 11, 2011

We don’t care what anyone says about Kate Moss. Criticize her looks or pooh-pooh her personal life; you put that girl in the right clothes and point her at either a runway or a camera lens and that bitch can WERQ.

Miu Miu

Kate Moss featured in the August 2011 issue of Vogue UK
Photographed by Mario Testino
Styled by Lucinda Chambers.
Hair by Sam McKnight and makeup by Charlotte Tilbury

Oscar de la Renta

And we love the styling here. It’s ’30s/’40s and a bit of ’50s, without being too literal about it or staging it in a too-cute setting. Just a fierce gal working some fierce clothes.

Love it.  The clothes, shoes, the model – everything.

  • http://twitter.com/lindseyrenee lindsey

Why is her mouth the exact same in every shot?

    • Anonymous

I was just going to say that….

    • Anonymous

Yes! That’s what I was gonna say. Shut your mouth, girl! You have Jessica Simpson mouth.

    • bookish

It’s not just her mouth. The whole expression seems to be the same in every shot, and her eyes look dead. I mean, obviously she looks gorgeous and all, but I prefer a more expressive face.

      • Anonymous

Dead in the eyes? Look at the second and third shots! I’m so surprised not everything is loving this!

        Flails.

        Dies.

Gets back up, looks at the photos again.

        Swoons.

        • Anonymous

She’s beyond astounding. [Swoons with JimMcC]

        • shorty j

This. I kinda like that her mouth is the same but her eyes and expression are really different. I don’t know jack about modeling but it really caught my attention.

    • Anonymous

Also, going to say it. That open mouth thing/I’m a little lost fawn look kills me. Dear God. Open it all the way, stuff something in to it, or shut it.

    • http://profiles.google.com/angelarosesarno angela rose sarno

we simply CANNOT let her off the hook for this, when the bitter kittens would be all up in arms if some young actress tried to pull this crap.  nary a twinkle in the eye!  nary a curve of the lip!  nary a sign of life!

      • Anonymous

My thoughts precisely. TLo would be all over some starlet giving the exact same face in every shot. There’s no denying she looks good in clothes, but I’m not seeing any ‘werqing’ in her expressions.

Speaking of WERQ, I suspect she’s had some done. Those lips look fuller than they ever have.

totally. I think her monochromatic facial expression is simply boring.

  • Anonymous

The second Miu Miu shot = LOVE. She is a goddess.

  • Anonymous

i love it all.  WERQ indeed.

  • Anonymous

Very pretty pictures, but not a lot of range of expression, is there?

Also, I don’t like the furry muff thingies in some of the middle photos. Ick.

  • Anonymous

Luuuurrrrrvvvvv the jewelry.  If only I were employed.

  • MilaXX

Love the simplicity of the background. She is WERQing all these outfits. Gorge!

  • Anonymous

My god, gorgeous. I feel like I’m looking at the love child or Ava Gardner and Rita Hayworth. Plus, the Miu Mius, Oscar de la Renta,  and Gucci need to get themselves into my closet.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Matthew-Riley/100000522956626 Matthew Riley

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t see the “fiercness”. She’s pulling the same exact facial expression (and ug, that open mouth) in every shot. Any other person would be criticized for it in a heartbeat.

  • Anonymous

Awesome shoot. every shot every stitch of clothing and every accessory.  Its all VERY classic Dior, right down to the tiny side of the head Tambourin hat that Christian Dior made hugely popular in the 50s.  And the style of pose and shooting is a collaboration of Irving Penn and Richard Avedon.  SWEET!!!!

  • Anonymous

oh, I forgot modeling was about standing around looking bored with your mouth open

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=49702581 Susan Bullard Mayer

FIERCE!  But disturbing how photoshopped her eyebrows in the peach top when compared to the rest of the editorial.

  • Anonymous

Kate looks gorgeous but her eyes look lifeless in some of these shots. The pose with her arm held out with the clutch and muff just looks weird.

    • oohsparkley!

I agree, she looks lifeless, just like a mannequin.  Maybe that’s what they were going for.  The pictures are nice and she looks gorgeous.  But her face is expressionless in every shot.

    So, so fab.

  • aussiegal77

I just died of a Fierce Induced Stroke.  Seriously, the clothes are AMAZING. I am so in love with every last stitch of clothing in this shoot.  Kate Moss, that bloody bitch looks insanely good.  Going back for another look.  LOVE!!!!!

  • Anonymous

The clothes, styling and makeup are great, but her vapid expression–which, as others have noted, is pretty much exactly the same in each shot–makes her look like a department store mannequin. And maybe that was the intent, but I prefer models who look like they are still alive. Still, the clothes look great on her and I adore that YSL and the Donna Karan in particular.

  • Anonymous

Glamorous and beautiful.  I love the jewelry.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_T53WBEPGJZ7MMMZC4O563YU5HA Observer

A great photoshoot; definitely recalls the glamour of the past.  We seem to be missing so much of that now; the pics are either bizarre or just ridiculous.

    • Anonymous

What I find especially annoying is when images are so deliberately blurry that the clothes are obscured to invisibility.  Isn’t the whole point about selling the clothes?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_24RD7WZX5UVGTQF3SDRT5DF354 Colleen

she looks like a whole other person when she models but yet she still has a strong presence. She really is amazing.

  • Anonymous

I never understood why all the famous photographers would rant and rave over Kate Moss, say she was their favorite model and/or use her constantly.  This editorial answered all my questions as to why Kate Moss is considered greatness itself.

    • Anonymous

It is one of those looks I wonder about sometimes.  I have yet to see any real woman walking around in such a blouse. Maybe I don’t get out enough?  LOL

      • Anonymous

Sorry I mis posted this.  It was intended elsewhere. Mea Culpa.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

My only criticism is that she’s pursing her lips in exactly the same way in every shot. She gives good face, but a little variety of expression would be more interesting.

    • http://twitter.com/asciident Melissa Della

Exactly my thoughts. She really is WERQing these looks, I’d just like to see a bit more variety in her expression.

  • Anonymous

Gorgeous!  Love all of these clothes, especially that YSL skirt & blouse.  I can’t help but to think what MK would say if one of the PR designers sent that blouse down the runway with the models tits falling out of the huge slit in front.

    • Anonymous

Does anyone actually WEAR those blouses?

      • Anonymous

I can’t imagine who.  Now matter how great your figure is, who you are, where you are, this blouse will just look slutty.

        • Anonymous

So what we’re saying is that these blouses are for image and tone and mood, not to be really worn. amirite?

        • Anonymous

          • Anonymous

That would be my take but I think it’s a little silly.  What’s the point of fashion if it can’t be worn?  Oh well…… :)

          • Anonymous

Its a long standing Runway tradition to design a few things that are meant only to capture the imagination and sell the “idea” of the collection that are never actually meant to be ordered and worn.  Weird, but there it is.

Gorgeous! I would have thought her an odd choice for this kind of styling and here she goes and proves why she’s a friggin SUPERMODEL!
    Love everything about it.

  • Anonymous

OMG – I owned that first Miu Miu look back in the 80s! Different colors and less fierceness, but the exact same silhouette.
She’s amazing in front of a camera. Gotta give her that.

    • Anonymous

The whole outfit? I seriously want that blouse. Is she wearing vintage in that picture?

      • Anonymous

No – she’s wearing current season, but back in the 80s I had that exact blouse. IIRC it was a Ralph Lauren. It had a detachable scarf. And I had a peplum skirt that looked almost exactly the same as this one. I forget who the designer was. I thought I was all that and a big bag of chips when I wore them!

    • Anonymous

…being modelled by an actual adult!

  • Anonymous

My favorite look is the YSL one, I would wear it from head to toe!  It is a little creepy, however, that in that shot her eyes appear to be looking in separate directions.

2nd fave look is the Moschino.

    • Christine Campbell

You do know she actually has a bit of strabismus, better known as a wandering or “lazy” eye, right?

  • Anonymous

She is an amazing model.  She looks good in every single thing here.

I’m bugged by her lack of real eyebrows, but that works in her favor as a model.
She’s another girl who can’t breathe through her nose, but apparently that’s not a prerequisite for models.

  • Anonymous

I’m going to need my smelling salts-I am lightheaded from all the gasping and exclaiming I did as I scrolled down the screen.

The clothes, the colors, the jewelry, the styling-GLAM from top to bottom. Kate Moss has some kind of presence, that’s for sure.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1314255041 Irina Ryabchuk

Yes, of course, but she’s photoshopped to death.

When did Kate Moss get so old? I remember her as the “heroin chic” waif. The photos are gorgeous, but to me, she looks every one of her 37 years. Not that that is a bad thing… I just still think of a her as a very young girl. Of course I think of myself as a young girl and I’m over 50.

    • Anonymous

I noticed her maturity, too. I’m liking that she is looking more her age. It reminds of models in the 1940s and ’50s who looked like actual adults, not children.

  • Christine Campbell

Wow.  This is the kind of editorial where I don’t care if the clothes work in real life or if she’s been photoshopped or what recent headlines have been about the model – this is just pure, unadulterated GORGEOUSNESS.  The Gucci and Moschino shots evoke the same reaction I had as a teenager when I first flipped through magazines and fell in love with fashion – I didn’t know much about anything – the pictures just spoke to me, and these are the same.  I love them!

  • Beverly Nash

Even though she is truly beyond gorgeous, she has a slight every-woman quality that I think aids her success as a model. Check out the face in the Tom Ford shot.

  • Anonymous

Soooo beautiful. WERQ, indeed. And the stylist deserves a standing ovation for putting it together.

  • Sylvia Baba

It doesn’t bother you that she’s making the same face in every picture (not to mention it’s an open-mouthed face)?

    • Christine Campbell

From my point of view, i’m not looking for a model to express a large range of emotion in a fashion editorial - i’m really taking the merits of how well the components of the picture is working on its own and how cohesive the collection of photos then feels together.  and while this open-mouth craze of late is not my favorite thing, some can work it better than others…and no question kate can work it.  particularly combined with the stunning clothing, the way it’s styled…to me, this all pushes it over the top.

      • Anonymous

Beautifully expressed, CC. May I call you that?  I don’t look for the personality of the model much,  Its about the total look of the shoot but most especially the CLOTHES.  What annoys me far more than the mouth breather thing is the propensity for pissed off looking, bored looking, or strung out looking that fill the pages of the periodicals of our day.

She is a great model. I love these clothes, too. I do think she was HEAVILY photoshopped, however. No one’s skin is that smooth. Eek.

I do agree with other commenters that she could have closed her mouth a bit more often – if she did that these pics would have been perfect.

She’s sporting the dreaded mouth-breather pose in all of these shots, which I must assume is a photography trend since every model in every photo spread is reduced to fighting to keep their lips apart at the same exact distance.  It must be as tiring to maintain as it is to look at.

Nonetheless, she looks fantastic in these looks.  I love the retro feel, I love the colors.  Those little shots of green from the earrings or the little green beret really make her eyes pop.

You look beautiful here, Kate.  Now do be a dear and close your mouth.  Put your lips together, blowing is optional.

I do not understand the appeal of her face. I never have.

    • Shawn Hill

It’s mostly proportions, symmetry, balance; the eyes are too far apart, the face too round, the lips too big; and yet she looks smart and chic, always.

    The posing is great.
Can they either put a bag (paper) over her head or crop her head out?

Fan-fucking-tastic. I’m not a Moss fan, nor a detractor, but I’m liking her more and more as she ages. She is so  much more versatile than she was when she was younger.

I’m also LOVING these clothes: luxurious and retro but not slavishly so.

Wow. Even supermodels can’t figure out how to shut their damn mouths …

  • Anonymous

If she’s supposed to look like a mannequin, I can go with the sameface.  If not, some variety in expression would be nice.  I do like her much more as she ages–some sophistication to her look instead of that ‘fresh-faced waif’ thing she worked for so long.

I can only echo what most everyone else has said: everything about this is practically perfect.

Oh how the camera, and light itself, love the planes of her face!  (Which is why I don’t mind the photo-shopping: it’s merely enhancing an effect that’s already there thanks to her facial architecture.)

  • Anonymous

I dunno, something here feels … off. The clothes are gorgeous and so is Kate, obviously, but I don’t think she’s a good match for them. She’s a very modern gal, always has been, while these clothes are redolent of a different Kate (Hepburn). If they were going to go with a she’s-still-got-it supermodel, I think Linda Evangelista would have been the better fit in this case.
