Judging the Judges: Nina vs. Heidi vs. Kerry vs. Joanna

Posted on August 19, 2011

All Project Runway judging bitches please line up to be judged, thank you!

Heidi Klum is wearing a Whetherly shirt, an Opening Ceremony skirt, Christian Louboutin shoes, and Wildlife by Heidi Klum jewelry.

Opening Ceremony Marjan Pejoski Skirt

After last week’s disastrous showing, she came roaring back with this cute and sassy little number. Absolutely love that skirt, which couldn’t possibly be more Heidi. We wouldn’t normally rave about a necklace like that, but paired with that simple sheer top, it totally works. As we’ve said, it’s all about framing the face when you’re on TV. Score: 9/10.

Kerry Washington is wearing a Zuhair Murad dress and Christian Louboutin shoes.

Zuhair Murad Fall 2011 Collection

We usually like Zuhair Murad’s designs but this is not something any female over the age of 8 should be wearing in public. The skirt’s pretty but it’s too short and combined with the pale pink and the pussy bow, it’s all way too twee. Very disappointed, because Kerry usually dresses better than this. Score: 4/10.

Joanna Coles is wearing a Calvin Klein dress and Alexandre Birman shoes.

She looks like she rushed over from the office with a pair of shoes from the accessories closet. It’s not a horrible look or anything, but it’s as bland as it gets compared to the women on either side of her. And to be perfectly honest, it’s not the most flattering look for sitting. Score: 3/10.

Nina is wearing an Aquilano. Rimondi blouse and Alexander Wang shoes.

Aquilano. Rimondi Fall 2011 Collection

Lucky for Kimberley Nina chose to wear a top like this on the day she presented her gold metallic look to her. It’s to Nina’s credit that she took this top – which we don’t like even a little on the model – and paired it with simple black pants to both tone down its effects as well as play them up in the best way. Another perfect “sitting down” look because all the interest is up near the face. This could easily have looked very tacky but she made it look chic. Score: 8/10.

AND THE KLUMINATOR TAKES THE WIN, VANQUISHING TWO FASHION EDITORS IN THE PROCESS!

Oh, Nina. You’re not going to let that stand, are you? We expect great things from you next week.

Heidi’s hair and makeup helped make her look gorgeous this week (both have been standing out in negative ways this season).

      • Anonymous

wow, I didn’t like Heidi’s hair at all! to me it looked like she rolled out of bed. Oh well, she’s still gorge.

        • Anonymous

Me neither, she looked like she is trying to get her hair used to going a few days between shampoos. Re. makeup, I’m sure I”m in the minion minority – I prefer her recent Teutonic Terminator look to bronzing and smudged eyes.

          • Anonymous

I was fine with this make-up, in general, but the hair looked unwashed, which made the smudged eyes looked like she fell asleep with her mascara on.

      • Anonymous

After that super harsh hair she’d been wearing – which I do not like – this was a pleasant change.

Whatever Joanna lacks in style, she more than makes up in bitchiness.  It seemed like anything bad was magnified 100X and offended every one of her 5 senses.  Heidi > Nina’s bedazzled gear.

      • http://www.facebook.com/joanna.cornish Joanna Cornish

I like that the most negative comment went along the lines of “if Nina wore that, everyone would think she was crazy.” As if Joanna really wants to spread that rumour around Marie Claire.

not inspired or entertaining but yeah bitchy. Shes an ass.

    • http://twitter.com/trustyourstyle Mary Jo Matsumoto

I actually think I would vote for Nina, that top with her hair is beautiful and I think she takes runway and wears it like a real (chic) person better than anyone, which is kind of the point of fashion. But Heidi definitely has the trendiest look with the necklace and fierce skirt, so I see why you picked her.

Ms. Joanna Coles…Her a Bitch. Her will rip out your  heart , staple it to your forehead and kill your hopes and dreams, if you dare show up at  the office looking anything but Red Carpet ready. Her Scary! Really, WTF is her deal? Why so angry? What in the hell kind of working environment is she running at Elle? Kinda feel sorry for Nina (call me sweetie if ya need to talk:)). And is it me or didn’t it seem like MK, Heidi and Keri Washington were also scared? Every time either one would make a comment, they would snap their necks in” Ms. I’m Queen B” direction for approval. Too “The Devil Wears Prada” for me! Other than Heidi’s and Nina’s outfits, the others excluding MK, are wearing read-to-wear-office wear.

Ugh, it irritates me when every stylist seems to be deploying the same clothing for their clients (i.e. nude shoes)–this time the pussy bow, and I think that peach color (one of the Kardashians was wearing something that looked just like this at that awful department store launch.)

WHY is the pussy bow in?  It’s sad 50’s secretary.  It’s awful.  Stop it.  Stop it now.

I like Joanna Coles, but thought she was a little harsh on hating everyone else’s designs and how terrible Nina would look in  them when she was wearing something so basic, looked a little saggy, and her shoes were a different tone (it seems from the photo).  Coles, take it down a notch.

And she keeps reminding me of La Swinton.  It freaks me out.  (Side note: how awesome would it be to get T. Swinton as a guest judge?  Someone MAKE THAT HAPPEN.)

I think Nina looks uniformly great, almost always, and i like this top.  LOVED LOVED LOVED the white jacket she was wearing at the beginning, but really disliked her workroom top.  Ick (this might be covered in a Ninacaps post…sorry).  But in general, she’s chic as all hell.

Heidi looked great! Love the skirt.

Joanna Coles was reallly trying to play the Bee-yotch with a capital B last night, but her insults were neither clever nor interesting: “If Nina wore that to the office, why, all the girls would talk about her behind her back!!!!!!”  Zzzzzz… Big snooze. I thought she was just mean.  And she looked like an overworked, tired, lonely, middle-aged woman who works too much.

        Karma’s a bitch.

Maybe that’s why Michael Kors seemed so flat and out of sorts last night.  He had competition in the kick-em-when-they’re-down department.

Heidi looked fabulous last night. That outfit is perfect for her in every way, and I was happy to see the end of the Terrifying Teutonic HausFrau look she’d been sporting the previous two episodes.

Nina looked lovely, as she almost always does.

Why was Kerry Washington there?  With four opinionated judges, what was the point?  And yes, the dress was all wrong for her.

And yes, pussy bows must be destroyed now!  Before they take over the world!  We failed to act when Clydesdale shoes first made an appearance.  Let’s not make the same mistake twice!

        • Anonymous

Why are pussy bows back? I hated them in the 80s and I hate them even more now.

We need to put on an anti-pussy bow rally. We could do a symbolic Burning of the Bow. We need a chant. And a slogan.

      • http://twitter.com/leslielies Leslie S

SWINTON! I have never agreed with something so much. can’t you just envision it? or even, if it was like this challenge, except swinton was the client? how much crack-itude would show up on that runway! it would be amazing.

        • Anonymous

Actually, I worry that the designs they’d come up for SWINTON wouldn’t match up to her general levels of crackitude.  It would need to be GRAND, and MAKE A STATEMENT.  I fear that Josh would be the only one up to the challenge!

        • Anonymous

Better still—Helena Bonham Carter as client. But it would definitely have to be a 2-day challenge.

      • Anonymous

“a little saggy”? Joanna’s girls looked liked they were taking a trip to her feet! Take a look at her next to Nina’s perky ta-tas. Guess which fashion editor knows how to pick a bra?

        • Anonymous

I’ve found Joanna has looked pretty schlumpy in all her appearances on PR. Makes you wonder how she came to helm a fashion mag.

        • Anonymous

I agree, but the funny thing is, it’s probably an optical illusion.  I think that top with the horizontal band makes Nina’s look perky but they are probably in the same place.  Joanna’s dress also looks rumpled even though you can sort of make out that it wouldn’t if she was standing.  Very interesting!

I think I wore something like Kerry’s dress at my fourth birthday party—in 1955. Times have not only changed, but I tend to wear adult clothes now.

      • Anonymous

Totally agree that Joanna Coles, at certain angles, reminds me of Swinton. And yes, it would be AMAZING if she were a guest judge.

    • BuffaloBarbara

I love Heidi’s skirt.  That’s really a great skirt if you have the figure to wear it, and Heidi definitely does.

Kerry Washington… oh, no.  No, no.  Pussy bows must be cut off of clothes and burned.  Can we put out that dictate now?

      • Anonymous

I immediately thought that Heidi’s skirt made her waist look impossibly wide and thought it was a good thing she was a supermodel that could pull it off.

    • http://www.facebook.com/samuel.j.donovan Samuel Joesph Donovan

I loved Joanna Coles’ outfit!  It does look a little strange sitting down, however.

      Heidi: 9/10–can’t argue–she looks HOT.
Kerry: 2/10–what WAS that.  Speaking of unflattering sitting down…
Joanna: 6.5/10–that smooshed back fabric really does hurt the look
Nina: 6/10–that top was distractingly ugly, but she did pull it off, somehow.

Don’t you guys think Joanna was a bit overpowering, I can’t find a better word, on Nina? She said “if Nina wore this she would be fired”, “we would be embarrassed by her”… like she wanted to make clear who was the boss. Bit of a faux pas given that Nina is the regular judge here.

      • http://twitter.com/leslielies Leslie S

I think Joanna out-Nina-ed Nina Garcia!

Joanna, if a Editor in Chief showed up in a T&Lo blog post wearing what you have on, the commentariat would politely excuse itself; go off into another corner of the internet and ask: “What was she thinking? Is she sick? Is she trying to get herself fired from Project Runway All Stars?”

Who is this woman? Where is she going? And does she have a Plan B?

If one of the designers had submitted that gold and bejeweled top to Nina I KNOW she’d have said “Do you have a Plan B?”  That top is the kind of garment you wear only because it’s “Designer”- I can see Edina Monsoon in it next year.

Heidi- The black is a great canvas for her cheap looking jewelry.
Nina- Elvis would like that blouse.
      Joanna- Botox.
Kerry- The fact that you choose to wear a dress that the Kardashian sisters liked enought to knock off, will be held against you.
Kors- big orange Paul Lynde impersonator.

And would it kill her to put on just a tiny bit of coral tinged lipstick ?  I’m sorry, but ladies over a certain age (especially fair ones) need some color, or people wonder “is she sick”?  That’s it!!! Zombie Joanna!  Designer brains…must have designer brains!!!

Kerry’s look reminds me too much of Kourtney Kardashian’s from yesterday. http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2011/08/kardashian-kollection-launch-party.html

Which I don’t hate, although Kourtney cheapens the crap out of it. I don’t love it either, but I’d probably give Kerry a 5/10.

Joanna has her reputation to maintain as the Simon Cowell of fashion. And her sense of style was about as boring as his too. I can’t imagine those flaps down the side being too flattering.

    • Anonymous

Oh–forgot to say that Joanna Coles’s necklace was totally wrong for the dress–much too small and tight around the neck. Not to mention very 1980s. And very sad.

Also, Joanna, women of your (and my) age and pale, thin skin should think seriously about some kind of fashionable legwear. Bare legs do nothing for you, hon.  They make you look all housewifey and…sad.

And your shoes clash with that horrible sack of a dress. Is it faded, or was it always that color?

And the girls could use some trussing.  They’re very saggy and sad. I’ll bet everyone at your office is talking about you behind your back.

Geez, no wonder Marie Claire is such a craptastic rag!

I’m hoping Joanna reads this blog and enjoys being trashed in the manner of her very own nasty self by me and everyone else who is doing it.

    • Anonymous

I agree, Heidi for the win. I like this top on Nina much better than the one she wore for the consultations. Joanna’s is boring. Full stop. As for Kerry, I do like that color on her very much, but not the rest of it.

    • margaret meyers

That Zuhair Murad dress is a  t o t a l  rip-off of the Kardashian Kollection for Sears dress.  Am I right?  What a talentless creep — it’s the same fabric, same color, the same pussy bow and little collar, the same sleeves, the high waist and short full skirt with lace at the edge.
      Geez, some people such copycats.

    • Anonymous

The staged pictures of Joanna Coles trying to sort of smile and ending up with a wonky smirk/grimace are hilarious!

    • Terence Ng

I loved all the interjected clips of Heidi saying “I agree!” I would have laughed if they inserted more of them arbitrarily into the dilalogue.|

      “I agree.”

    • Anonymous

Heidi looks great. I like it when her makeup doesn’t wear her.
Kerry – that dress is AWFUL.

      • http://www.facebook.com/c.d.barney Chrissy Barney

I totally agree… Heidi does look amazing here. Her harsh makeup lately has been taking away from how beautiful she really is, and when your job is to look fabulous, that is NOT a good thing. Kerry’s little girl dress is irritating and juvenile, but I kind of can’t make myself hate the look ’cause she’s so incredibly lovely. Joanna’s look is boring, ill-fitted, and badly accessorized. Hon, if you’re going to be THAT bitchy, at least bring the look to back it up. Nina has this understated cool that allows her to wear perhaps otherwise ridiculous clothes and look amazingly chic. See, Joanna? That’s how you do it.

      • Anonymous

“Joanna – I’m sorry, if you’re going to be THAT bitchy, you need to at
least bring the fabulosity to back it up. She’s not nearly as fabulous
as she thinks she is. Boo.”

Amen to that. She looks terrible in that dress, like some dotty old English lady who plays bridge twice a week, runs the local garden club, and pays more attention to her little dogs than to her husband. The shoes are killer but it looks like they ended up on her feet by accident.

    • Anonymous

One of my favorite things about this episode was Joanna Coles and seeing how she approached and talked about fashion compared to how Nina does. Nina talks a lot about the business side – trends (i.e., what sells) what’s camera friendly (ad revenue) and what women want to buy. Joanna talked about the emotions and passion of fashion and it was refreshing and even a bit inspiring. I really loved her as a judge here and I’m excited now to see her on the PR :All-Stars as the mentor.

      • Anonymous

Great point.  I forgot she made that little speech about putting an outfit on and feeling like unexpectedly good things could happen that day.  Funny that they had those respective viewpoints, you’d think it would be the other way around (business side for the Ed in Chief, emotional side for Fashion Ed)

      • MilaXX

I thought I was the only one excited to see her on All Stars. However I think she would make a better judge and Isaac a better mentor.

        • Anonymous

Isaac definitely proved himself as a better mentor than judge in season 2 of The Fashion Show, so I agree that I’d like to see his and Joanna’s roles reversed. Then again, if Lifetime really wanted to get me to watch, it would put Iman on the judging panel.

    • Anonymous

Not sure what Joanna was going for, she looks like she’s trying to channel SWINTON (Thank you, Fug Girls!)….maybe SWINTON Lite.  Oooh, how about “Make an outfit for Tilda Swinton” Now THAT would be a challenge!!!

Nope. And that’s part of why he sticks to that uniform, I imagine. (Plus, his weight can fluctuate a good 20+ pounds without exciting comment, as long as he makes sure to up or down -size the jeans & t-shirt correspondingly).

      • Marie Drucker

Someone may remember this better than I do… but didn’t MK once tell one of the young men designers that his life got a lot easier when he stopped trying to dress a certain way. The judges were all commenting about how one of the designers was dressed and MK said that when he was a young designer he put a lot of effort into his outfits too, but now he cares more about his designs for others and less about this own outfits and having a “uniform” makes his life much easier. I don’t think he was talking to Christian, but he might have been. It wasn’t Mondo. At least I think it wasn’t.

Heidi’s hair looks flat and Nina’s boobs are melting.

    • Cyndi Wolfe

Queen B’s dress does not flatter. It does not fit properly in the bust and arm scye area.  Does Calvin Klein not do darts?  Did Joanna not check the fit of the arm hole?

I recommend Ms Coles invest in a full length mirror.  She would have made Nina wear a dunce cap and sit in after school detention for such a bunchy un-sleek look.

    • Anonymous

Sorry, I can’t get behind the warrior princess top that Nina is wearing. I think it’s still super tacky. Kerry is heading for The Good Ship Lolipop and Joanna is a snooze and droopy to boot. Heidi, on the other hand, looks great. Love the skirt/necklace combo.

    • Anonymous

And Heidi DID tone down the make up, didn’t she ?
Still to much products on her face but the eyes and the mouth are softer.
Good look, Miss Klum (still too short for my taste, but she won’t be happy if she can’t show her legs)

An arbiter of fashion, such as Ms. Coles, has no business showing up in public, TV no less, in such a messy dress and hair that looks like blowback from a demon crop circle. She can and should do better if she’s showing up to tell people what sucks in fashion. OK, I admit it. She and all the other Tina Brown clones in publishing irritate me no end for reasons too numerous and off-topic to go into here.

Kerry looks like she’s wearing a boudoir lampshade. Heidi and Nina look great, but give Nina the win. Love sheen and gems on someone so comparatively staid. And despite the designers’ understandable apprehension – she gets extra credit for being – seeming? – approachable and forthcoming during the consults.

      • Anonymous

Now my fellow unborn fawns, was I really the only one who thought Heidi was wearing a Heidified version of Nina’s look–thus, the Nina hair and neutral make-up and the little black outfit with sleeves.

But, of course, it being Heidi, it was short, tight and shiny.

Damn, Heidi does dress just like a Barbie doll–she wears fantasy versions of normal clothes.

      • MilaXX

I thought Heidi dialed it down (for her) to allow all the focus to be on la Nina.

    • Anonymous

      Heidi – looks great.
Kerry – all the interest is at the hem.
Joana – super dullsville. If she wore that to work, I’d think she was asking to get fired.
Nina – is a style goddess.

And this gold top at least works because it’s broken up with coordinating fabrics and patterns made from blocking. I can’t really get behind the big fake rhinestones on it, though.

    • Cyndi Wolfe

Kerry Washington’s dress might be cute on the runway on a very young model, but when worn to sit in a judge’s chair for hours on end it loses it’s perky intersting shape and begins to look a little tired – kind of like a pile of polyester curtains in a laundry basket.

      • Anonymous

Just figured out what Kerry’s dress reminded me of. It’s Shirley Temple in Baby, Take a Bow, only Shirley was barely past her toddler years when the movie came out in 1934.

I didn’t like most of what Joanna Coles said to the designers about their clothes–she came off as mean and angry. And she looked tired, too; perhaps she needs a vacation.

      But what she
said about fashion and clothes was spot-on, as someone else commented on earlier. I really responded to
what she said about how clothes make you feel and that when you have on a wonderful outfit, exciting things might happen. (They probably won’t, but it’s nice to think that they might.) That was the only point where she sounded excited about being there–otherwise, she looked like someone dragged her into judge against her will.

I agree, but because she was so negative overall, I immediately forgot her one positive comment til I saw it mentioned here. Wouldn’t it be delicious to know some of the behind-the-scenes drama with the judges??

Every negative point La Coles made about the designers’ work involved a catty comment about Nina, though, which I thought was especially poor form for a guest whose subordinate was the focus of the episode.

I can’t disagree with the scores.
Kerry’s dress is a great color for her, but that’s a dress better left to Dakota Fanning.
Joanna’s outfit was pretty blah considering all the smack she was talking and girlfriend needs a bra cause the girls are looking a little saggy.

Sorry, MilaXX, hadn’t read the comments before I made mine about the bra issue.

        • Anonymous

see, and I just figured she was wearing a bra- just the wrong one.

    • Anonymous

Joanna Coles was VERY harsh as a judge and considering how terrible she looked she should be the last person judging someone on their fashion choices. As guess it is a “do as I say, not do as I do”. Also can Nina ever do something with her hair – a ponytail? a bun? parted on one side. VERY BORING considering she is a risk taker with her clothes

      • Anonymous

A few weeks ago I wrote that Nina’s hair looked like Miley Cyrus. It was well groomed last evening, but she is stuck in a rut. And I’m not one ever to say women over [pick one: 40, 50, 65 etc] cannot rock long hair. It is just so rare, if ever, to see her do anything interesting with it.

    • Anonymous

I wish you would start adding Kors to these judgings; it’s only fair. Even if he consistently gets 1:10 for wearing the same boring thing every week. He’s in fashion, too, and has a responsibility to the profession. The girls shouldn’t have to do all the work. Give him some responsibility.

If only to match his tan to other well-tanned items: Coach bag this week?  Or Speaker Boehner?

Oh yes. We need a tan-o-meter.

Looked to me like Joanna Coles could have used a better bra.

    • Anonymous

Kerry’s look was a little like the Seinfeld “Puffy Shirt”.

    • Anonymous

Joanna’s look was completely unremarkable.  I probably see 30 women every single day wearing a look like this to work.  And I work on Wall Street!  I would expect more from someone in Joanna’s position.  And the matchy matchiness of the shoes?   Horrible!

    • Anonymous

I thought it was amusing how many time Joanna dissed one of the runway designs by saying that if Nina wore it to the office, she’d fire her.  I could hear Nina saying “bitch…..I wouldn’t be throwing stones”……

    • JillK

I would love to know who designed the dress Heidi was wearing on the day before.  I am in love with that textile.

      • Anonymous

I loved that too!   I couldn’t stop looking at it.   It made me miss what Nina was saying.

    • http://ifyouseekamie.wordpress.com/ Amie

Joanna Coles, LEARN TO SIT UP STRAIGHT. Your horrible posture is making my eyes bleed. Look at Nina on your left. THAT is how you should be sitting. Shoulders back, head up, like you’re the HBIC. Since you *are* and all.

    • Anonymous

The judge in orange at least isn’t exposing all her thigh-age like Heidi and the other one. I don’t see how that makes the look “unflattering for sitting” to my (ancient) mind it the best look I’ve seen in a long time for sitting (other than pants)–remember that KK look last week with the white panties?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1017585103 Kanani Fong

One of the differences between Joanna and Nina is posture. Nina’s shoulders are back, she’s sitting up straight. Joanna would do well to focus on her posture. She just looks like a lot of us feel at times  –like we work too much!  Agreed, Heidi looked great.

    • Anonymous

It is possible that the way she is sitting is causing the top of the dress look bunchy and ill-fitting.  Look at the area below her bust line – the fabric is not draping well there.  Also, there is bunching by the armholes.  It could be that the fit of this sheath would look better were she standing.  Maybe she needs to adjust her posture or straighten the dress as she sits down.  As it is she does not look as polished as she might.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1017585103 Kanani Fong

And, yes, Kerry’s dress looks like something Shirley Temple would have worn and started tap dancing across a stage.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=552853133 Teddy Partridge

        Or Lindsay Graham.

      • Anonymous

Didn’t see this before I posted, so you beat me to it. Shirley Temple at 5 all the way.

    • Anonymous

Not only do I not like Nina’s blouse on the model, I don’t even like it on Nina.  She needs Excaliber by her side to complete the look.  On the other hand, though maybe not a good “sitting” dress, I thought Joanna Coles looked smashing.

    • http://twitter.com/PsychicMuppet Bitsy Carver

I have to disagree on Joanna! The shoes don’t really work, but I don’t think the photos really do justice to how great she looked in that color on T.V.

    • Anonymous

Was I the only one that got a distinct “Humph, don’t like you, bitch” vibe every time Joanna spoke and the camera cut to Heidi and the Duchess?

    • Anonymous

Yep, that Zuhair Mohad dress reminded me so much of the Kardashian one as well. That was almost as blatant an inspiration as the leopard print Botkier bag that Sears already yanked after the cease and desist.

or the dead kennedys/kim kardashian logo.

Joanna Coles is wearing a Calvin Klein dress and Alexandre Birman shoes… and a corncob up her ass.

No. A corncob up her arse (she’s British, after all) would make her sit up straighter.

oh, feh, thats past oyster cracker & is getting into the realm of hostess ding dong. the only time a rhinestone that big looked good was in gaslight.

it almost pains me to say it, but i like kerry washington’s dress. i have this one little sliver of me that i dont understand but which likes twee when it’s paired w/ sophistication. if it was a kid’s dress it would be pink, not salmon-grey, etc & ect. as an aside, if i think longer i could give you the pantone name, but i am tired & my brain is tired too.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=552853133 Teddy Partridge

Wasn’t it weird overall, though — on top of her horrible costume and snotty comments — to have Nina’s boss at work on the judging panel for the episode that was all about Nina?  And then for La Coles to go on and on about how people would talk about Nina behind her back, or wonder if she wanted firing, or was ill, to make a negative point about a designers’ work.  That struck me as particularly inappropriate.  Reminded me of Bette Davis in All About Eve.

    • Anonymous

I’m going to say it. Ms Coles needs better under garments.  A firmer bra is in order.

      All About Eve!  True true.

      • Anonymous

I thought the same thing, right away.  It cracks me up that such a know-it-all fashion editor could sit there and criticize one designer and his/her garment up one side and down the other, but there is Ms. Coles with droopy boobs.  Or I guess they could be called “droobs.”

    • Anonymous

Two ‘overall’ comments to make on this season…Nina’s hair is looking great, with no annoying flyaways; also, whoever’s picking Heidi’s clothes is doing a much better job this season–more age appropriate and more interesting (not the same old same old from her).

      For this ep:

Kerry–come on girl!  Wearing Grandma’s 50th-anniversary-party dress is NOT for PR.  I bet Nina told her it was “sad.”

Joanna–looks like she would smell like anger, after a day of bitching out minions.  Also, face/neck too damned tangerine compared to her arms and legs.  She could look like Tilda 2.0 if she just would.

Nina–love the top, and I agree much better with the dark pants.

Heidi–the necklace makes the outfit, and picks up where the skirt left off in the sparkle department.  Very nice.

    • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

ps. the first dress heidi wears–the “hello, designers” dress–is really fabulous. who made it?

    • Anonymous

Sorry, but Kerry is just so gorgeous she gets 5 points just for sitting there. So, if she gets a 3 on that dress that gives her a tie with Heidi in my book.

      • Anonymous

Totally agree. She’s just beautiful. But that dress was horrible.

    • Anonymous

Heidi looks great as does Nina.  Nothing aspirational about the get up on Nina’s boss.  That outfit is boring and the matchy matchy shoes are over the top.  Kerry Washington’s hair an dmakeup looks fab but that dress is not the righty choice for a show where you will be sitting the entire time.  She looked frumpy and bigger than she is.

    • Anonymous

Why was Kerry there?  She barely said anything, and they didn’t need a fifth judge.  Why not save her for the next challenge?

      • margaret meyers

And she’s wearing something from that Kardashian Kollection.  Well, it looks like it’s from that Sears effort.

      • Anonymous

Aw, I thought Kerry held her own pretty well, especially against the bitch juggernaut that was Joanna Coles. You’re right that the SUPERpanel was unnecessary.

    • Anonymous

Perhaps this is a bit off topic, but did anyone else notice that Joanna Coles seems to spend a lot of time fantasizing about firing and/or committing Nina to a mental hospital should she ever show up to work in something unfashionable?  That woman is the boss from hell – poor Nina!

Are pussy bows really back in style.  Wasn’t there a whole freakin’ backlash against feminisn because of sad looking suits with pussy bows?

look at her skin color & you can figure it out.

i think if the color-correction business isnt bothering me {bad photoshop makes my teeth gnash}, it’s probably not that big a deal.

then again, if they wanna take this worry seriously & they wanna pay me twenty bucks a day, i’ll color correct all of it w/in an inch of its life in twenty minutes. i’d do it for free were i not so bloody broke.

    • http://twitter.com/VicksieDo Vickie Lord

Heidi’s necklace screamed of Gretchen to me!  But she looks great.

    • Anonymous

Love Heidi’s look, only thing I dislike is the matchstick looking necklace, but I can forgive that, love the detail on the skirt, and her hair is perfect for the outfit this week. 10/10

The top of Kerry’s dress looks very prairie, I’d say Little House On The Prairie, from the color to the bow around the neck, to the ruffles on the sleeves. Very junior looking indeed. 2/10

Joanna’s dress is too plain. She wore a red dress last season for the Marie Claire Billboard challenge that looked stunning, very sharp, and the red was a powerful shade of red. This looks tomato-y. I like her accessories though, and its still marginally better than Kerry’s prairie outfit. 3/10

Love Nina’s top, love how it looks like armor, but the beige fabric adds a softness to it. Nice mix of hard and soft, and yes did the right thing pairing it with plain black pants. Shoes are a bit matchy-matchy but fine. And same hair from the 8 seasons prior, of course. 8/10.

Agreed Heidi definitely wins this week.

    • http://twitter.com/Iris_awesome Iris Morrell

But the piece i am DYING for is the shirt Heidi wore when she introduced the challenge.  It was so beautiful and ornate.  it reminded me of a Klimt painting and also of a fiber arts exhibit I saw recently at a museum.  I want it so much.

      • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

        me too. who made it?

    • http://www.notacomplexperson.tumblr.com Anonymous

Just a minor correction: Heidi’s skirt is DESIGNED by Marjan Pejoski, but it’s SOLD at Opening Ceremony.

    • Anonymous

I disagree about Heidi.  I thought the proportions of the skirt were off, the hemline was almost at the same length as the sleeves and it seemed to hit her in the wrong place at the waist and give her a bit of a pooch.  Plus, the hair was bad.  I’d have given Nina the win.

      • Anonymous

rainwood, me too. It’s off just enough to look wonky. I love the pieces, and Heidi is just gorgeous, but I’m not loving how the skirt fits her.

    • Bree The Vole

I was reading S7 posts a while ago and you know, Joanna Coles looked pretty good in Anthony’s win episode. What happened to her?

No thoughts about Kerry’s outfit, but Heidi and Nina looked just fantastic. They brought the maximum gorge to this episode.

    • Anonymous

Normally I think Kerry Washington looks pretty fantastic even when it appears she’s not really trying. But as you guys said it’s way too twee and the skirt and pussy bow are ridiculous. This shouldn’t be worn by anyone, ever, but especially if you’re an adult.

    • Anonymous

at least its not the salmon blouse and god awful glitter sweater vest.

I am coveting Nina’s top. I don’t usually go for such ornate clothes, but that thing is fabulous.

the kardashian’s were quite unorginal considering the above.

A million credit points to Nina for pulling off that top. Now, if she can pull off the Aquiliano pants from the runway shot, I’ll officially think she’s made of magic.

Nina brushed her hair!  And it looks great!

    • RyzandShyn

Joanna be crazy. All I could think of was how incredibly exhausted Nina must be from dealing with her at the magazine. Nina always appears rather calm and articulates her points succinctly at judging. I imagine these skills were honed by survival instincts.

I’m really not liking it that we’re letting Michael Kors off the hook here.  DAMMIT WE MUST JUDGE HIM.  I know he’s not giving you much to work with, sartorially speaking, but it doesn’t seem fair to let him skip off monochromatically, judgment free.

Echo previous comments about Heidi’s amazing look (dress?) when she opened the episode and introduced Nina as the client.  Ornate gold … and she carried if off.  THAT was a showstopper.  I lunged at the screen.  Really would love to know more.  This was obviously the bling blouse episode, no?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PVIY3NBCZJAJNFWDBCWG2DMKL4 Jen R

Spot-on with the critiques for 2 of the judges. Who told Kerry Washington that dress looked good on her? The color does nothing for her and the fussiness of the ruffles and bow make me want to gag. Meanwhile, I can’t believe you call Joanna Coles’ look ‘not horrible’. This is a woman who is critiquing designers on style and fit but can’t even show up in a dress that fits her. One look and you can see that the armscye is too shallow on her, which is weird, since she’s got some seriously skinny arms…. On the other hand, maybe it’s too big and they’ve pinned it behind her – there’s some weird folding going on near the hip area on the skirt. Even if it’s supposed to have that strangeness at the side seam on the skirt, it still doesn’t fit well at all. How did her assistant let her walk out of her office looking like that? Moreover, how did Nina (her employee) allow her to be filmed looking like that???

    • Toni Mitt

Love Nina’s top.  Heidi looks human, which is a great improvement from last week, and the other two should have stood in bed.  BTW–was MK wearing black?  Just wondering–didn’t get to see the episode….

Coles either has really low-sitting breasts or she needs better support garments.  I think it’s the former.  Kind of like Kiki Dunst – that girl’s tits sit so low on her chest they’re practically a belt!

    • Ali LaFleur

how about nina’s top she wore when she met with the designers? that was fab.

    • Stefanos Mantyla

When I looked at Heidi’s, my first thought was “this is another all-black look from her”, and yet you managed to convince me that it deserved the top spot! Well done! I would have given Nina 8.5, though, so she is not that far behind.

I really love Joanne’s necklace, and without it, the whole look is deceptively nothing. And the colour somehow looks so much worse than I remember it being. More just plain orange than the orange-red I remember.
