Judging the Judges: Heidi vs. Nina

Posted on August 05, 2011

Let’s all turn toward the Project Runway judges with our lips pursed and one eyebrow arched, minions. It’s their turn to be assessed.

We’re only two episodes in, but Heidi and Nina are really bringing it, fashion wise. Heidi in particular seems to be much more dressed up than normal.

Roland Mouret Spring 2011 Collection/Model: Maria Kashleva (NATHALIE)

Of course she had the hem raised significantly. Mädchen wasn’t sitting all day in a below-the-knee skirt with cameras on her, no sir. It’s a crisp, sexy dress in a fantastic color and suits her to a T. We really love the detail at the shoulders.  The severity of the dress must have triggered her Ilsa, She-Wolf tendencies, because she went all kinds of harsh in the hair and makeup. We don’t actually mind the severe hair because she’s got the face for it, but the Joan Crawford lips and eyebrows are killing us.

Lanvin Fall 2011 Collection/Model: Freja Beha Erichsen (IMG)

J’ADORE. It’s sexy and summer-in-the-city sophisticated; perfectly suited to go with the Garcia mane of hair. Love the cocktail ring too. Nina’s always good at finding the perfect jewelry piece to punctuate an outfit.

If we must pit them against each other cagematch-style (and darlings, you know we must), then we’re gonna have to say Heidi wins this round. Nina’s look is more sophisticated, but that rather stiff bodice isn’t made for sitting.

I prefer Heidi’s dress and hair, but hate the lipstick. It’s really the wrong color.

Can we take a paint scraper to Heidi’s face and put some on Nina?

It’s looked ridiculous.  One who had WAAAAYYY too much make-up and looked like a clown from the neck up, and the other who looks like she’s running out to the store from the neck up with almost no make-up.

    • Anonymous

That lipstick!!! And blush!!! I couldn’t even look at her when she was complaining about one of the other models make-up.

      • Anonymous

I know Heidi’s makeup was extreme, but the other model’s looked more low end, nearly streetwalker harsh.

        • Anonymous

Yep, I agree. The make-up on Joshua’s model was piled on, and looked ridiculous considering the colorful garment she was wearing. Heidi’s looks downright tasteful compared to the model’s.

      • Anonymous

It seems the lighting on the runway is also horrible

    • Anonymous

Heidi’s lipstick really takes away any love I had for her dress.

      • Nora Mulllin

Exactly! The dress is stunning and suits her perfectly but that lipstick is so damn distracting it’s hard to notice the rest of the look.

    • Anonymous

I can’t decide without seeing Heidi’s shoes, but leaning towards Nina because prior to reading this, I remembered Nina’s outfit but could only remember Heidi’s hair and make-up.

    • Anonymous

I think that was Heidi’s nod to Klaus Nomi.  She still looked pretty good.  And Nina is rockin’ the JBF hair!

      • Anonymous

I’m disappointed she didn’t break into a flamboyant rendition of Henry Purcell.

The dresses are fierce but Heidi’s makeup was sooooooooo distracting.

    • Anonymous

I’d say Heidi wins the dress and Nina wins the hair & makeup.

But more importantly, Nina wins the test of wills over the challenge winner.

That “Look”! OMG, the look La Nina gave Heidi as if to say, “Dispute me, I dare you!”
        Price. Less!

        • Anonymous

I don’t think that in a Heidi vs. Nina face-off, Nina loses often if she’s really dug in her heels.  But I suspect she shrugs and concedes, not-so-secretly pitying others’ lack of discernment, more often than she digs in her heels.

      • Anonymous

Was shocked that Heidi’s “executive producer” title didn’t trump Nina’s “I’m fabulous and know my stuff” cred.  Wonder what their relationship off-screen is really like!

      • Tamara Hogan

        Yes, yes and yes.

Someone needs to tell Heidi she’s lost more than enough baby weight.

    • Anonymous

Neither one of them hit a home run here.  Heidi wins because from the neck down everything works.  The makeup is a disaster and ages her quite a bit.  I hate the earrings which seem too stuffy and matronly for her.   Wish I could see her shoes.

The Lanvin is a great little cocktail dress but isn’t doing Nina any favors.  I don’t think she has the legs to be wearing something that short, especially the way it’s riding up while she’s seated.  If she could do the show standing up it might be okay.  The ring is great.  The woman really does know how to accessorize.  Hair and makeup are good, as always.  But she looks a little uncomfortable to be showing so much skin and I’m getting a little bit of a mutton dressed as lamb vibe from her.

      • Anonymous

When I saw the runway version of Nina’s dress, I thought she had great taste, seeing the possibility of something as stiff and ugly as that dress, the possibilities of it being an interesting dress where she wouldn’t be shown moving, so the amount of bling is great.

    • Anonymous

I couldn’t take my eyes off Heidi’s dress last night–it is gorgeous, and that color is fantastic on her!  However, the severe hair and makeup are not good. Not good at all. Very pre-war Berlin. Severe and slutty at the same time. Her face doesn’t even look like her face.

Do not like Nina’s dress at all. Do not like the stiff bodice or the bling dangling from it. But her hair and makeup are flawless, as usual.

In a cage match, it’s got to be a tie. Heidi for the dress win, Nina for the hair/makeup win. But I somehow feel that Nina would do some serious damage to Die Uber-Frau with those platform sandals.

So, are the sparkles on La Nina’s dress supposed to look like Cthulhu?

i thought Heidi looked pretty but the makeup looked so harsh.  i like Nina but to me it always looks like she has no makeup on.

      • Anonymous

Yes, and I have to say I do not understand all the Nina hair-love. To me it always looks as limp and fuzzy as an old dishrag.

    • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

I guess I have an odd esthetic but I liked Heidi’s lipstick, the way it clashed with the dress. I kept looking at her and getting little buzzes of pleasure at the two intense colors. I don’t care for Nina’s Lanvin so much–I found it unmemorable, which is OK, but looking at the pictures on her and on the runway it seems to me that the stiff bodice tends to veer out of sync with the body it is on.  It looks like a mistake or problem, whereas with Heidi’s colors my thought was, did she really do that–yes, she did! Wow!

But in the end, I look at Nina to hear what she says and Heidi to see what she is wearing. Nina’s face is just more interesting.

      Thanks for doing this comparison.

      • Anonymous

At first I hated Heidi’s makeup, but it grew on me.  The strong color of the dress (loved the shoulder treatment) played nicely with the strong makeup.  It’s certainly not makeup for everyday, but I think it worked in this setting.

      • Anonymous

I loved Heidi’s whole look. I love a little drama in the makeup, I don’t think it always has to be this “fresh!” “natural!” look (that involves just as much makeup as Heidi’s look.)

I love Heidi’s dress but the make-up is verging on the desperate dowager. Very unattractive. I find Nina’s outfit, hair and make-up kind of ho hum. That bodice makes her chest look like as flat as an ironing board. Heidi wins on dress alone.

    • Anonymous

Heidi’s recent weight loss has made her face look a bit too angular and the tightly pulled-back hair and overkill with the make-up accentuate it even further. Have we ever seen Nina with her hair up? Loved Heidi’s dress but thought the bling on Nina’s could have been dialed back a tad. I wonder how much weight the guest judge has in the voting – minimal?

Have to go with Heidi – for the dress, the makeup was awful and she slammed the model’s makeup??  I did not like her hair.

Nina – I did not even notice her dress, but now that you pointed it out…no I do not like it.   (her more subtle makeup and hair would win)

Disagree. Garcia wins on the make up alone. Klum’s is so psychopathic puppet, she looks like the female Red Skull.

I love that Mouret dress on Heidi but her makeup was all sorts of heavy and severe.  I’ve seen drag queens with less on their face!  And that lip color was just terrible.  I’m not a fan of the slicked back severe hair either.  All pulled back into a chignon would havebeen great, just skip the greasy look of over product.
Nina’s Alnvin is gorgeous but the first thing I thought is “That is a stand up dress, not a sit around dress.
I would give Nina the win for not looking like a dominatrix whore in the face.  Like someone else does…

      • Aly Light

I so agree– when she popped up on screen looking like that, I kinda screamed.

For what it’s worth, I remembered Heidi’s outfit, but had no memory of Nina’s till I saw your post. I like the severe hair, but not so much the makeup.

Heidi’s makeup is ridic and she had the gall to call out the good Josh for having his model made up too heavily! Nina should have the Garnier folks hook her up with some free conditioner.

    • Tim Wong

I think Heidi Over did her styling- the hair/makeup seem too severe for the dress.. while Nina needs more with her makeup+ hair… I get that the “non makeup”/”un done” hair is her signature.. but wiv a dress like that.. she kinda needs a smoky eye or her hair back.. or even curled.. just SOMETHING….

    • Anne Slovin

I thought Heidi was wearing wayyyyy too much blush.

    • Anonymous

Fashion is one thing, but on-screen domination is quite another. Nina versus Heidi = Nina ALWAYS comes out on top. Why? Because she can say “It’s editorial” and that’s the end of the discussion. Poor Heidi, who actually wears the clothes professionally, is outgunned. Always. And this is why Our Lady of the Canyon won last season.

    • sweetlilvoice

I give my vote to La Nina! Heidi’s lipstick killed me. I’m glad someone else thought it was a bit much.

    • Anonymous

Heidi’s dress is gorgeous, but from the neck up she’s totally Addicted to Love.   It’s not a flattering look on her. It’s dated and it ages her. In general, I don’t think she has a face (as beautiful as she is) that can handle a lot of makeup.

      • Anonymous

    • MilaXX

I liked Heidi’s makeup but I think the brows were a bit too dark. Heidi looks like she out of her baby making weight and back into model – (y) weight. I would love to see la Nina change her hair up once in a while.

    • Anonymous

It is a push for me. Each woman is dressing perfectly for their roles, their personalities, and their figures. Nina gets a point because she is wearing a glittery Cthulhu on her dress. Heidi is deducted a point because her lipstick drove me to distraction last night. Horrid lip color with that dress.

    • Anonymous

Heidi looked amazing last night.  LOVE the color on her, hair and eye makeup worked for me (even the brows!), but I would have gone strong but tauper on the lipstick.  The MAC matte taupes come to mind…strong statement but no clashy with the raspberry dress.

    • Anonymous

Oh, c’mon you guys. Heidi clearly picked her lipstick because it matches those Project Runway cards she’s holding!

I love her dress. I like Nina’s dress, too, although I do think she needs a little makeup.

      • Anonymous

I didn’t notice that at all watching the show, and then it became perfectly clear at first glance at the still photo Tlo posted.  Aha!

    • Anonymous

I think Heidi just went with whatever lip color appealed to her because finding the right shade to go with that dress is a cosmetic nightmare. It will be either too matchy or it will clash. She couldn’t have won either way. So while I don’t love it, I can excuse it because of that fabulous dress. I want it right this minute. She could have toned down the rest of the make-up though.

Nina is… Nina. She’s one of the few women in her age group I think can get away with hair that long. Even when it looks kind of crappy, I still love it. I also like her no make-up look. It suits her. I’m not crazy about her dress, and it’s really not right for the occasion. She looks uncomfortable in it, as though she’s afraid one (or both) of her boobs will fall out.

I have to give this to Nina. Despite the misstep with the dress, in general she knows what she can wear and what she can’t. Heidi’s still working on it, but it doesn’t come naturally to her.

Well, I certainly have put a lot of thought into this, haven’t I?

    • Anonymous

I hated Heidi’s makeup.  It might have been less noticeable if she were wearing a different color dress.  As it was the very first thought that screamed in my head was Clash! and I could not get over it.  Nina, I thought, looked fine.  If we did this every week, this might be the first time I would have given Nina the win over Heidi.

    • Anonymous

Thank you! I thought the same thing about Heidi’s make-up, particularly that lipstick, which looks awful with the color of the dress. And then she had the nerve to tell one of the designers (can’t remember which) that his model’s make-up was garish! The dress is fab and she looks great in it.
I don’t like Nina’s dress at all. It even looks stiff on the model. Her long hair/no make-up look is getting old. I wish she would do something different already. She’s in a rut and she’s afraid to change it up. She’ll be 75 years old with that same hair.

Those Miu Miu platforms seem to be Nina’s go-to shoes this season. She wore them at the Battery Park casting, then on Good Morning America promoting the show, and now on last night’s episode.

    • Anonymous

I thought Heidi looked very cute at the beginning when she introduced the challenge. black tights and short black dress – it was cute. And if even I can tell the lipstick is wrong, it’s WRONG.  Though Nina does look pretty good, I always think her hair looks dry and way, way over treated – her hair never looks lush and gorgeous and flowy, and she shouldn’t wear it as if it is.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_N3GA2TTX752OYSKBWWXQVFM2HI katie

I don’t know- I love Heidi’s dress but that makeup is just too harsh. she looks like a mix between a stern headmistress in an Austen novel and a dominatrix (one in the same? perhaps.)

    • http://profiles.google.com/drunkenhousewife Drunken Housewife

I love the Roland Mouret Heidi has and hate the Lanvin Nina’s wearing.

To me, Nina’s dress looks like she drank too much and vomited sparkles on herself.  Meanwhile that Roland Mouret looks so sophisticated and intelligent.

    • Lauren Frankel

Is it me, or does Heidi look like Samantha Jones right here?

    • Anonymous

heidi’s make up was atrocious, great dress though.   i enjoy La Nina more and more.  Yes, she’s thin and beautiful- but not inaccessibly so.  she always looks chic, current, and her age.

    • http://twitter.com/CheriCPat Cheri Patrick

I think Heidi’s lipstick was perfect for that killer dress.  She didn’t try to match it, she complemented it.  It was the color on the eyes that took her over the line, and the severe hair, which she seems to favor lately.

She wins, though.  I am sick, sick, sick of Nina’s never-changing hair.  It’s like she went to the Jennifer Aniston School of HairstyleLock.

      • Shawn Hill

Agreed, that shock of red against all that magenta is perfect; she’s got the face for the Joan Crawford lips, too. And I don’t get why Nina twisted the bodice to make it more symmetrical; it’s more fun on the model.

My first thought upon seeing Heidi was she looks like a grown-up!  Brava!

    • Anonymous

Heidi’s only real issue is the lipstick. Even the eyebrows might register as only a tad dramatic, were the lips not bludgeoning the viewer.  Though I mourn the indignity of chopping that Roland Mouret off mid-thigh.

Ms. Garcia has a style that reminds me of the women I’ve met who are smart, rich – or at least very comfortable – since their teens, and have always taken for granted that their appearance is part of the currency that smooths their way through life, right up there alongside money, the right college, and well-trained household help.  All their apples are not in the beauty basket, but they go for treatments, hair appointments, gym sessions with their trainers, etc. just like they brush their teeth or go see the ob/gyn. And then, they launch into their daily life. No matter how much time & effort went into their appearance, there’s never the aura that there’s a make-up artist and hair stylist hidden just off stage for running repairs (even if there is.)

    • Anonymous

Nina’s starting to get on my nerves with her smirk and contrariness, but, yeah, she looks good.

Heidi looks utterly fierce. I’m really impressed with how she’s adjusting her look as she gets older. I like the lip color, but I’ve always been a sucker for red and purple.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1214755227 Meira Niibori

Even though Heidi’s makeup was definitely too much, I’m going to say she takes this one.  Nina looks fairly uncomfortable in this dress – as she so often does to me when she’s in super short, blingy, or frilly stuff – her hair is looking less amazing than usual, and she’s wearing so little makeup that she seems tired and wan.  Plus,  don’t you think this is kind of becoming her default look at this point – JBF hair, minimal makeup, black outfit with some kind of bold graphic/accessory?  Not that I don’t love me some black clothing, but it seems a bit “meh” for a fashion show judge’s wardrobe.

    • Deb Oswald

Heidi’s make up makes my eyes hurt!  Dress is gorgeous, though

    • Anonymous

I honestly don’t see anything noteworthy about Heidi’s eyebrows.  Are they different than usual?  I have to admit I did notice her lipstick and didn’t like it.  LOVED her dress though.  Nina’s didn’t even register with me.

    • http://profiles.google.com/richixcore Richi Robilotto

Nina is one ugly biyatch. Why anyone would think her attractive is beyond me. She has bad hair, lousy uneven skin tone and sad sense in fashion.
And she often surprise at how amateurish and shallow her opinions are, with absolutely weight in substance. She has this persona that she is seriously and fierce but it’s a facade that’s all cracked. The weakest part of the show is after the runway show in each episode of Project Runway. I just fast forward to who’s in and who’s out. No need to hear the old harpy yap.

Heidi for the win. She looks at ease in a dramatic dress. Nina’s looks like it is lined with cardboard and she looks uncomfortable. Nina’s make up looks better overall. I think she could have used a tad more color on the lips.

Now I must give it to Frau Klum

    • Jane Doe

Guys, I love you (you wouldn’t know this because I never comment, though I lurk faithfully!), but you totally cheated with that photo selection.  Heidi’s dress gets a D-, tops, because it fits SO BADLY.  Above the waist it’s beautifully fitted and tailored.  But on-screen during the episode, it shows it with her standing, and from the back, and it looks like someone’s very first attempt to make a zipper.  The construction is not that good, but most of all, it is WAY, WAY, WAY too small in the bottom half.  It pulls; it bunches; it lumps.  I (wee prolie nobody that I am, who buys most of her dresses at thrift stores) would not go out of the house wearing that even to a costume party, because a fit that bad makes everyone think immediately that the wearer is misshapen and it’s shockingly unflattering.  Of course, the entire planet knows that Heidi Klum is not misshapen, but if I had to guess, I bet she’s a 2/4 on top and a 4/6 on the bottom, and that dress is maybe…just a 2, everywhere.  With her money, she needs to take a tip from Clinton and Stacy and buy to her largest measurement and hire a tailor!

BTW, I haven’t read through all the comments yet because I was so outraged when I saw that dress during the episode that I was aggrieved by it being complimented here :).  So someone else may have made this point more promptly and helpfully than I.

I’m going with Nina.  I didn’t like the neckline on Heidi’s, too angular and boxy, and the styling was terrible.  The lipstick clashed with the dress color, and I agree about the harshness of the hair/makeup combo.  La Chica doesn’t mix it up the way Heidi does, but it also means she doesn’t make those kind of mistakes.  Ever.

No, I’m going for Nina. Heidi looks great, but Nina really brought it.  These two are really going for it this season.

The first thing I thought when Heidi critiqued Tang aquarium boy’s makeup choices (sorry, there are too many of these fuckers right now), I thought “You are wearing red lipstick with a purple dress and I can see your eye shadow from the Kuiper Belt. Hello?” I did love both hers and Nina’s dresses but Nina for me gets the win for not wearing something of everything in the makeup artist’s kit.
