James Marsden for GQ Magazine

Posted on August 29, 2011

Here’s our one and only “why we like James Marsden” story. It was probably on one of the X-Men DVD “Making of” documentaries, we’re not sure, but the first time we saw him interviewed, he was talking about working with such well-trained actors as Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen and he was clearly in awe of their commanding voices, blurting out with a laugh, “My God, if I had a voice like that … I’d probably have a much better career!” It was so sincerely self-deprecating that it was charming coming from a good-looking guy talking about his superhero movie, a moment not normally reserved for self-deprecation (or even charm). We’ve loved him ever since, even if we can’t say we’ve followed his career all that closely.

There’s your intro. Don’t bother us about a segue. Here he is for the September issue of GQ magazine photographed by Nathaniel Goldberg. We rag on GQ for being unimaginative in their styling sometimes, but we can almost always rely on them to turn out their subjects in impeccable looks, which is more than we can say for a lot of the standard “jeans and t-shirt” guyditorials we’re seeing way too much of lately. He looks fantastic here. It would have been nice to see some variation on the cut of the suit, but we can’t deny he’s got exactly the build for the high-water, tightly fitted version he’s sporting throughout. That last look with the red shirt and socks is fantastic.

In the span of a year, the man was in X-Men, Superman, Hairspray and Enchanted. <3 him.

      • Anonymous

And he showed a very nice range with those flicks

      • Anonymous

        INDEED!!

Also I saw him once at a restaurant in the Valley with his little daughter looking both scorching hot and utterly adorable. Hence, my undying devotion.

      • Anne Slovin

        And he can sing!!

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=12500056 Joseph Lamour

I mean, he played a Disney Prince. He’s. just. fantastic.

    • https://me.yahoo.com/a/dLUE.9h6zdoHMLprP6AQrSQpKt0CZys-#e58b4 tom

I think that he and the suits look great.  What’s the thing with pants length these days; the pants here look too short and we’ve seen plenty of examples where the look to long?  It seems like there is some kind of pant length war I’m unaware of.

    • B. Braddock

      ooh mommy likes!

    • Susan Foster

James Marsden is made of awesome but is also totally underrated.  And to keep it on topic – I agree that he is totally hot in these pictures.  Especially the last.

    • Anonymous

I’m not sure many men can carry off the colorful socks, but on him they look good.  They are not for someone who takes themselves too seriously.  And maybe socks like that will make men stop wearing their pants length too long.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

It’s an old tradition for conservatively dressed men to wear very colorful socks and braces. In the old days of high topped shoes neither article would be seen by the public. Writer Clarence Day called french stockings his father’s “Secret Joys”

    • Anonymous

And he can sing.  If it weren’t so cougar, I’d swoon a bit.

      • Anonymous

Ah go ahead. I don’t normally swoon over the youngins either, but I admit to having a minor cougar moment.

    • Anonymous

i don’t tire (or can’t fathom tiring, i should say) of the london cut… i especially love the contrast socks as an accessory.

    • Anonymous

The one with the glasses was GUH worthy.  GQ always does a great job with their men.

      • Anonymous

He reminds me of Guy Pearce in that one.

        • Ariana Batz

That is exactly what I was thinking! I think part of it is how pronounced his cheekbones look in the shot.

    • Judy_J

He’s gorgeous.  I especially love the shot of him sitting in the booth with the newspaper and glasses.  Clark Kent, but not so nerdy.

    • Anonymous

Love form fitting clothing for men.

      Not digging the socks tho.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shawna.ready shawna ready

I love love love the colorful socks! I wish every guy dressed like this :)

    • Anonymous

He is forever Corny Collins for me.

      • Anonymous

        Always!

    • http://stitchingincircles.etsy.com Tina

oh my goodness: I want to move to the world where men dress like this. Or maybe it is as simple as moving to Italy?

    • scottyf

In the Americanized version of Death at a Funeral, in a primarily African American cast, Marsden was the only thing worth looking at. He took what could have been a two-dimensional role and layered it with pathos and depth (well, as much depth as you can get with that kind of role in that kind of movie).  To me, he’s kind a male version of Lucille Ball: an extremely good-looking person with impeccable comic timing who is not afraid to look silly for the laugh.

And he looks killer in a good suit.

      • Rand Ortega

        Yup!

      • LocMama

My shallow might be showing, but the nudity didn’t hurt either scottyf.  He was also in Hop doing an ok job acting opposite an animated bunny.  Very handsome young man who looks incredibly hawt in these suits.

    • http://twitter.com/karenwalsh Karen Walsh

      LOVE.  Yes please.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

This is a look you can wear ONLY if you are young, slender, and handsome. He’s doing it.

    • Rick Aiello

      SO in love.  *sigh*

    • Anonymous

The man is totally delicious, and I’m loving the styling here. I have to say, it’s a rare man who could look good in suits as tight-fitting as these, and most men wearing flood pants just look ridiculous. He, on the other hand, looks suave–in a good way–and confident and…just very, very good. (I’m salivating a bit here. It’s embarrassing!)

Love the shoes and the colorful striped socks.  My dad used to wear that exact combo. But with longer pants. Obviously!

    • Anonymous

Mmm, he looks very Clark Kent in the diner-booth photo.  Nice.

    • Anonymous

Thank you for today’s eye candy.   Love, love, LOVE looks 2 and 5.  Loved him in Enchanted and 27 Dresses.

    • Anonymous

Handsome man!  That second pic makes him look like the professor everyone has a crush on.

But I don’t like the fit of the suits.  Fitted is one thing.  Looking like you went one size too small is another thing entirely, and I’m afraid these fall into the second category.

      • Anonymous

I agree! Too tight! Love him though.

      • Anonymous

As a professor, I can only say I wish I worked  with anyone who looked like that.

      • Anonymous

Yes! I’m a professor and I have a crush on him!

    • http://twitter.com/HotMessHousWife Sammi M

God he’s cute. I never thought of him looking so dandy, but it’s a great look on him.

    • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

Oh my garsh. Those first two pictures in the brown suits–YUM. This is the first time ever that I am happy this is James Marsden, and not James Marsters.

    • Anonymous

Love him and love the styling, even though the suits are too small.

    • Toto Maya

Have you heard this guy sing? That’s what made me love him. He’s awesome and can do no wrong.

    • Terence Ng

Wow, third one down is a total basket shot, huh? *fan*

      • Anonymous

LOL, yes I noticed that too!

    • Anonymous

i know you guys don’t share the love, but that brown 3-piece is doing some fabulous things for me. note to self – get fiance a brown, nubby 3-piece to match the dark gray one.

Crazy socks! Basically, I am done with this editorial.

I loved him in “Enchanted”. You can tell he loves to make fun of himself.

      • Anonymous

Your post hadn’t popped up when I posted essentially the same thing!

    • Anonymous

Though I rarely resort to such language, I can only say, Rawr…

I loved him in Enchanted and Hairspray. He has a goofiness that helps offset the matinee idol looks.

    • http://www.facebook.com/andra.ruscoe Andra Ruscoe

He’s lovely.  He’s PRINCE EDWARD! 27 Dresses is one of my guilty pleasure faves.

    • Anonymous

      oh my.  oh my.  scrumptious.

    • http://twitter.com/ShelfAfterlife Shelf Afterlife

He kinda lost me when he flaked out on X-Men to make that lame-o Superman movie, but the suits in this spread are gorgeous.  And he looks good in them!

Also, never thought I’d be so impressed by socks!

    • Eclectic Mayhem

Blimey!  *fans self* I just need a moment.

    • MilaXX

I like the 2 suits with the striped socks and the last with the red socks. After looking at so many shots of guys who can’t be bothered to dress for the RC, it’s nice to see a man well dressed.

    • http://twitter.com/noelster_sf Noel Adolph

these shots are gorgeous. marsden is, in my opinion, the only saving grace in the mess of a movie called ’27 dresses’ and the reason why i watch it everytime it is on FX. completely charming. love the styling in these shots, it’s not surprise he started out as a model.

    • Rand Ortega

Yummy. I think he deserves James Franco’s career & attention, but is far too smart so give up his soul for it.

    • Anonymous

      *swoon*

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

He looks amazingly like Guy Pearce in that second photo.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

I think he’s totally adorable and a gifted actor.  I think in one week I saw him in The Heights, and then in Sex Drive, and he was amazing in both.  I enjoy a lot of his movies — even 27 Dresses.  I know, I know.  But he was adorable in it.

    • Anonymous

he won me over in hairspray.

    • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

He is my dream man. He sings, he dances, he kicks mutant butt! *swoon*

Wow! Loving those striped socks. Dreamy guy too.

    • Anonymous

      He appears to be packing.

      • Anonymous

That was the first thing I noticed, too!  Maybe it’s simply the tight suits, but I don’t think so…

    • Anonymous

He won me over with Hairspray, hands down. What an awesome and utterly delightful performance, seriously.

    • Anonymous

LOVE him and he looks amazing in all of these shots.

One night, my roommate and I were bored/trying to work on homework assignments and papers.  We ended up having an unplanned James Marsden marathon and watched 27 Dresses, Enchanted, and Hairspray.  It was fantastic.

      • Lisa

Don’t forget to throw in “Zoolander”!  He had, literally, like a two-second part as male model and assassin John Wilkes Booth!  He shoots Lincoln in the head, pauses to give this smoldering look to the camera, and then runs off – it’s hilarious!

And I love him in “Enchanted” – so funny and so gorgeous!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lauren-Jean-St-Martin/504251897 Lauren Jean St. Martin

      Sigh…….  Oh, he’s perfection!

    • Lisa

He is seriously so yummy!  One of the things I love about him is – see, I have this thing about really gorgeous people who are also funny.  Gorgeous people are sometimes just that – gorgeous.  They sometimes don’t have a personality because they don’t need one; they have their incredible good looks to fall back on.  But someone who has both great looks and a hell of a personality, and is funny to boot?  Sign me up!

    • Anonymous

Loved him in Enchanted and Hairspray….he’s looking super hot here rrraawww

    • Anonymous

Love him. Go watch Hairspray again! My kids love it so we watch it often, and the more we watch it, the more we realize he’s the star of the movie. He’s perfect. (Also, fun soundtrack.)

    • Anonymous

I don’t pretend to follow menswear styles — but are we seeing the end of pants that are two inches too long in favour of pants that are an inch too short?

    • Anonymous

Christ on a cracker that Clark Kent shot of him in the glasses with the brown suit and blue striped socks is burning a hole through my monitor. He is smoking hot and vastly under rated.

    • Jenna Gordon

sweet baby jesus this man is completely and totally lickable, especially in these suits. the photos could be more varied rather than the continuous shots of him giving someone in the distance a smoldering look. the suits are fantastic!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1121651290 Angela Murray

I fell in love with him for Enchanted, which was reinforced by Hairspray. (I love X-men, but I’ve always been annoyed by Cyclops, so…)

    • Anonymous

I’m not so sure about that face he’s giving (smouldering? brooding? drama queen?) but he’s good looking and looking good. Though I hope this doesn’t encourage the large segment of the population that really shouldn’t wear body hugging high water trousers to do so.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I like him when I see him, but I’ll admit, I don’t think about him too much otherwise. However, I must say- YUM.

      So pretty.

    • Patricia Biswanger

Why highlight the socks, for crying out loud?  And doesn’t that grey wool suit look too tight?  In fact, don’t most of them?

    • http://twitter.com/warontara Tara

      Oh I love him….

    • Anonymous

My only complaint is not with the model, but the overabundance of plaid shirts.  A little variation would be nice, and let’s be honest, a couple of them aren’t far removed from “lumberjack” or “1994 Pacific Northwest concertgoer.”

J.C Leyendecker. Someone is cheapening the idea of the Arrow Collar Man. Look up J.C. Leyendecker and see what is frustrating with this photoshoot.

Loved him in Heights. He’s one good looking man and very talented to boot! Very well done God!

Many of these shots were taken in the low-lying areas of Red Hook in Brooklyn that were underwater this weekend. I’m not sure if the black house [in the last photo] was left undamaged.

I’m dating myself a bit, but he was seriously cute on Ally McBeal, too.

    • Vaniljekjeks

      I love those red socks!

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

So I’m probably in the minority here, but I just don’t like the tight fit on these suits. Sorry, it just looks….uncomfortable.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Totally with you on that one.  Men in tight fitting clothes is definitely ok, but not when it comes to suits.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3KCDEX4FOTCFHZP6WLKSOOKUVM Danielle

Does anyone else remember him in Sugar & Spice?  I love that movie, and he’s adorable in it.

    • http://www.2beerqueers.com infomofo

This makes me think I can go buy a 500 dollar club monaco suit and wear them hemmed to my knees and look great and that is what is wrong with this.

    • Scott Hester-Johnson

His entire body is hanging from his cheekbones…

    • Anonymous

I’ve loved him ever since he made his character in The Notebook a legitimately tempting alternative to Ryan Gosling. He is so ridiculously handsome, but despite that, so likable.

And in these pics? I want to eat him with a spoon.

    • Anonymous

Not a fan of the too-small suit, but there’s no denying he’s a beautiful man. *sigh*

      YUM!

Drool. Agree there could have been a bit more variety, but he pulls off this look so well.

      Yummy, I’ll take one, please!

i’m really liking the bold paid shirts with the suits, something i don’ oftent see done so well.  the bright socks are a little jarring, but they’re growing on me.  the striped ones are my least favorite.  there’s no denying that he wins the contest for most beautiful cheekbones ever.

    • Phillip Wilde

I freaking love those socks and want to steal them all.

    • Anonymous

Not too many men can get away with this look, but he sure can. He’s rocking a Guy Pierce vibe here and I’m liking it A LOT.

Man I know that face, but I can’t think of a single thing he’s ever been in.
