In or Out: Zooey Deschanel in Moschino

Posted on August 17, 2011

So Lo shows T these pictures this morning and asks him if he thinks this is an outfit worth discussing. “I guess so,” T replied, “But who is that?”

“Zooey Deschanel.”

“It is? Did she travel back here from 30 years in the future?”

Darlings, behold Hollywood legend Zooey Deschanel, ready to pick up her Lifetime Achievement award:

Zooey Deschanel at the premiere of “Our Idiot Brother” in Los Angeles in a Moschino dress.

Moschino Fall 2011 Collection/ Model: Melissa Tammerijn

This is a TEXTBOOK case of “Girl, this is so not your dress.” We’re not quite sure whose dress this is, but we suspect whoever she is, she’s a big fan of Dynasty.

To be honest, the more we look at it the more we think the girl this dress belongs to doesn’t exist. It’s too fussy and it looks like it’s impossible to prevent it from looking a little sloppy and awkward. Even the runway model can barely manage to make it work for the 45 seconds she had to wear it in public. The skirt detail on Zoe’s version is different from the runway version and we can’t say it’s an improvement. She looks like she’s got tissues stuffed inside her dress and they keep working their way out. And what’s with the hair and makeup? The spider lashes with the blue eyeshadow looks aging and the half-assed up ‘do isn’t helping.

This is going to sound weird, but she’s so haphazard and confused-looking that we get the impression she was dropped from a great height onto a pile of cushions right outside camera range and simply rolled over to the red carpet and stood up.

VOTE NOW!

IN! She’s FABULOUSLY ruffled!

OUT! Pilgrim Alexis Carrington.

In other harsh judging news, Olivia Wilde’s “minty fresh sister-wife” look got a well-deserved OUT.

That collar, that collar, that collar. Her neck has gone awol. And of course every girl wants “gut  fluff”. Yeah, the hair and make-up ain’t helping but that collar and “gut fluff” did her in, so that would be a big fat out.

    • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

      Gut fluff!!

      • Anonymous

        I know, right! Gut Fluff.

She looks like one of those little clown dolls with the sad white face and little black tear. I know Gaga has made fashion a performance art, but if she was going for that look she should have gone all the way and done her make-up to match. – OUT

  • Anonymous

Oh my! This woke me up more than my coffee.  Pilgrim Alexis Carrington all the way. The neck ruffle looks awfully sad clown and I don’t know what to say about the gut flap.

    OUT

    • Anonymous

Can it be Pilgrim Alexis Carrington meets Judy Jetson?

      • Anonymous

And a bit of Harley Quinn thrown in for good measure.

    • Anonymous

      “Gut Flap”! That’s perfect! lmao

OUT    I so wanted to love this dress on someone other than the model.  On Zooey its a total washout.  It makes her look ill proportioned. The length is wrong for her and whoever did her hair and makeup should be boiled in a vat of liquid eyeliner.

  • http://www.facebook.com/suzie.vazquez Suzie Vazquez

She looks fabulous!! So I suppose I will choose IN – She’s FABULOUSLY ruffled!

  • Anonymous

    OUT – total clown collar.

  • Anonymous

From the neck up, she looks like a clown with that silly neckline and the extortionate amount of blusher and eyeliner. From the waist down, she looks like she’s got a table cloth stuffed into her skirt.  What were you thinking Zooey?!

    OUT.

    • Anonymous

Right? I mean, WTF is with the lower lashes mascara!

      • Anonymous

I know they’re like spider legs. *shudder*. They’re almost as long as her top lashes!

  • Anonymous

Get rid of the gut-ruffle, bring up the hem a few inches (and turn the skirt around), make the collar a little less… collar-y, start over on the makeup and give her a sleeker updo, and you could have something here.

Oh, what the hell am I saying? She’s OUT.

  • http://www.myblackfriendsays.com myblackfriendsays

Ahhhh! OUT. The clutch is cute though.

  • Anonymous

Is it possible she’s had the bottom reversed?  It’s the only reason why I can think of having a slit AND gut fluff, which should be rear fluff….still not flattering, but a bit more excusable.  Not enough to excuse the clown collar, of course, but still….

  • Anonymous

That collar makes me twitch just looking at it. Twenty minutes after putting on that dress, you’d find me in the ladies’ room trying to cut it off with the scissors from my manicure set. And the front looks like a cushion that has split and the stuffing is spilling out all over the place.

Out, out, damn sad clown cushion!

  • Anonymous

Loves it. The upturned collar next to her face is whimsical, delightful and come-hither all at once. And the waterfall-y peplum is modern (in my opinion) and a thoughtful departure from 80s Jem and The Holograms wear. I’m not so crazy about the spider legs she’s glued to her eyelashes. But on the whole, I think she looks very pretty. IN.

  • Anonymous

I actually love it. She’s got that whole vintage thing going, so why not let her step in to the 80s for a hot second. It’s unique, fun, and plays on her personality. Oh, and I dig the makeup and hair. So, big IN from me.

  • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana WhatTheFrock

It’s an out BUT – I have to say that it’s different for her and at least that’s something. It’s not a twee little girl dress with mary janes and tights.

    • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana WhatTheFrock

P.S. That sounded like I dislike her signature look, when I actually think it’s pretty adorable. But it gets old.

The clutch is cute? Everything else is definitely Pilgrim Alexis Carrington, more out than anyone has been since Olivia Wilde in that mint green angel dress

Out.  I didn’t even have to see the whole pic, just the thumbnail.

  • http://profiles.google.com/scaponigro Sarah Caponigro

In… she can do no wrong in my book.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=668425491 Daniela ‘Dani’ Weiss-Bronstein

Playing with the skirt is what really makes the dress awful. There’s just so much bulk around her hips, and then down the front of the dress. It makes no sense.

  • Anonymous

Even on the model, it looks like a costume plucked from the Commedia dell’Arte. OUT

  • Anonymous

At least the dress arrived unwrinkled.

    Sorry Zooey, Out.

  • Anonymous

    “Send in the clowns.” Out!

  • http://twitter.com/foodhussy foodhussy

it’s hideous – but her new show looks really funny

  • Anonymous

Was the skirt on this dress sewn on backwards by mistake?

My grandmother, God rest her soul, had a joke she loved to tell from when she was in fashion design seamstress school in the early 1920′s: Student: Professor, I sewed the sleeve into the neck opening by mistake.
Professor: Don’t worry, it will iron out.

I thought of this when I saw the reverse skirt. OUT

    • Anonymous

I kinda thought the same thing.  Looking at the runway shot, the ruffle on the skirt is completely different in its placement.  And the slit is in the back.  She’s looking like Linda Blair with her front on backwards.

  • Anonymous

    Epic fail. OUT!

  • MilaXX

OUT! The only thing I like about this outfit is the bag. The dress is straight from the Dynasty collection & whoever did her face needs to be slapped cause that stuff is packed on there like they were trying to use the entire bottle of foundation on her face at once. Also Zooey? Kim Kardasian lashes are not for you.

  • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

The “pile of cushions” image is so awesome and hilarious that I am going to imagine every star does that, right before the cameras flash.

  • Anonymous

She is one red ball nose away from Klown Kollege. It gives me no pleasure to say that–her body language implies that she knows she looks like she’s ready for a Pagliacci performance by an opera troupe in a small town in North Dakota.  Out.

  • Anonymous

The hair is totally pride and prejudice.  The dress is bad.  Maybe I wouldn’t hate the neck ruffle if it didn’t have the waist ruffle.  It’s just so unflattering.

    Out.

  • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

    O-U-T.

  • Judy_J

I can hardly belive that is Zooey.  That heavy eye makeup ages her more than anything else, I think.  The dress is awful; her hair looks like she combed it with an egg beater.  She’s horribly, sadly, poorly styled….OUT.

  • Anonymous

It’s MY dress, that’s whose dress. You have to be naturally ridiculous to wear something like that, and I already wear petticoats and giant bows on a near-daily basis, so clearly it’s for me. Just, you know, in Size Fat, please.

I don’t think it’s as bad as you say. It definitely doesn’t suit her at all and she looks awkward….but also kind of awkwardly cute. You have to give her credit for switching up her usual full-skirted twee dresses. She made a really bold move here, so I’m gonna give her an IN just because I know everyone else will be piling on her.

Is the skirt of the dress too small for her or not sitting correctly on her body as the slit should be down the side? Check out the video on this.

It’s just too clownish and the makeup just accentuates that.

    • Anonymous

That is indeed strange. Having the slit in the front adds to the awkwardness of the dress and just makes for too many elements in one look. And I wonder if she did her own makeup?

She’s such a pretty woman, it’s a shame that she allowed her hopefully-now-fired gays into stuffing her into this hideous creation.  And then letting the also-hopefully-now-fired hair and makeup people try to destroy her natural beauty.  But, yes, the clutch is cute?

    OUT.  With a capital O.

  • Anonymous

Out! Zooey, you’re way too cute to let this happen. Never again!

  • Anonymous

Aw, I think she’s pretty. Anyway, the dress is a mess, the shoes are too heavy and the wrong color, she should have worn sheer black hose like the model (pale white legs sticking out from beneath a black dress are OK for Goth girls, but not on the RC), and the “correction” to the skirt was a mistake. But I like the purse. It looks vintage and I’m always wondering why more RC gals don’t use those awesome vintage purses.

  • Anonymous

Quirky, bohemian-dressing indie singer now has a movie and a network tv show.  She looks like she’s trying couture while still keeping her style.  I’ll give her an in, just because red carpet couture is new for her and she’s trying to find her place.

  • Anonymous

Sheesh, I remember drawing on lower lashes, a la Twiggy (but badly done), in the 60s.  Didn’t know it made a non-deserved come back.

  • aussiegal77

I dunno….take off the neck ruffles and I kinda like the dress. Granted, I have had it up to HERE with those clunky shoes but I like the hem length on her, perhaps because the slit prevents it from going into stumpy legs territory. I also like her make-up but the hair is ageing.  I think I have to lean towards an OUT on this one.

  • Anonymous

I hate to give Zooey an OUT as she has always been a girl crush of mine but she is, indeed, out. Maybe if the dress only had the collar ruffle, maybe if she had finished fixing her hair after she ran to the grocery store, maybe if she didn’t decide to play Twiggy with her eye makeup. I do love the clutch though. And I still love Zooey. I’ve never kissed a girl but, if she’s game, she can be my first.

You’re right, that not her dress.

However, last week’s post on Kate Moss includes a picture of her in the same dress looking divine, http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2011/08/kate-moss-for-vogue-uk.html

So perhaps this is more of an editorial look rather than a real-life (if a red carpet can be called that) gotta-walk-around-in-it look.

Love Zooey though, think she’s adorbs.

    • Anonymous

Gasp! LOVED that on the Kate! She looks so sophisticated! This is an excellent example of how the same dress is so right on one person in a certain context and so wrong on another in a different one. Thanks so much for pointing this out!

P.S. But I don’t care for Zooey at all – to me, she always trying to be too cute by half….

  • Jan Knapp

I think she is adorable.  The dress – not so much.  I like the top half, even the collar and the make up is a little retro (think Twiggy) which is great.  It’s the skirt that is just wrong.  If it was just a pretty sheath dress under that collar it would have been perfect.

  • Anonymous

Well, I liked it at first.  And then I realized I was being mesmerized by her incredible eyes!  Are those real or contacts???  wow.
    Dress? – OUT

  • Anonymous

I like the idea of this dress a lot, I think it needs a wide belt to tame it, leave the skirt as on the model and DO NOT wear solid, heavy black Minnie Mouse pumps with it, it needs a sexier shoe.  A couple of big diamond cuffs for jewelry would have helped too.  The Linda Gray form Dallas hair is so not working in her favor but I’m not 100% sure what hair would do this outfit justice.  It needs to be sleeker, whatever it is.

I love the dress on the runway.  Not sure why it doesn’t work on the red carpet. Actually, the more I stare, the more I conclude it’s the bangs and the make-up.  She reminds me of a harlequin doll.  This dress demands sleek hair pulled off the face and way less mascara.   I could see Sharon Stone rocking this dress to perfection.

I wouldn’t have minded the dress so much if it didn’t have all that crap on the waist/front. That collar alone is enough drama for one dress. I understand the need for an updo with this dress, but this surely isn’t it. She needed something more sleek, maybe with the heavy bangs, but very sharp and sleek. And that makeup! Holy Christmas, that’s more eye makeup than I used to wear back in 1985, and I didn’t think that was possible!

I understand wanting to lend a little interest to the skirt, but that ruffle-y bit sure is an odd choice.

Otherwise, IN . . . . (1) She’s still in her slightly iconoclastic zone, but it’s neither twee nor ’50s-suburban-matron.  In fact, it’s a refreshingly different vibe for her;  (2) No problem with the eye treatment because, well, the harlequin thing is kind of the point (without quite belaboring it).

A fan, so I guess I give her more room to operate?

I saw this elsewhere and thought, “TLo will be ripping this outfit, yes they will.”  And you didn’t disappoint.  This is so, so bad.  The skirt alteration looks like she put it on and it was too tight and it ripped the slit there and popped off half the ruffle which is now just dangling.  She has a bad case of Momsen eye, which is a trend I’d like to see die.  She looks like she knows this is all too much and is depressed about it.

    OUT!  So, so out.

    OUT.

  • Joyce VG

    She’s quirky isn’t she?  OUT.

  • http://twitter.com/kmc1138 Kathleen Coyle

Out.  Maybe without the collar I would have liked it.  Maybe.  Which brings me to a mini-rant:  I love a throwback look, but there are some things that should stay retro-novelty and never make a resurgence.  Among them?  Shoulder pads.  Head bands of the hippie variety.  Pointy bosoms.  And OVERLY EMPHASIZED BOTTOM LASHES.  Gah.  (Oh, and – God willing – the peep toe boot)

  • Christine Campbell

Oh dear.  I specifically remember citing this very Moschino dress in the kate moss editorial last week and saying that it was the type of shoot that made me not care “if the clothes worked in real life” now I find me having to put my (cyber) money where my (cyber) mouth is, so let’s see….

it’s really not a very good dress for walking around in, is it?  or having any sort of facial mass/weight to your legs?  but god, do i love the IDEA of the dress and what her stylist and she tried to do by having her wear it, that hair, that clutch…those eyes…damn it…i’m going with IN.

  • Anonymous

Definitely out, though I think (from what I can see of it) I like that clutch.

  • http://twitter.com/dontpanic503 Brian Jardine

    A resounding OUT.

  • Shawn Hill

    IN! Fun!

  • Candice Richardson

The runway model is werqing the shyt outta this dress. Zoey? Not so much.

  • http://badkittyknits.blogspot.com KittyKnits

Umm, in?  I think the hair does not help her case, certainly, but I think it’s a clean, classy look — though very different from her usual style.  Fact of the matter is, I usually detest her usual style, so this is a nice change.  It’s a weak “In,” but “In” nonetheless.

OUT Awful, awful dress. Poor thing looks embarrassed.

When are petite actresses going to learn that they’re not 6-foot-tall, 80-pound runway models and adjust the proportions of what they wear to their own shape and size?

  • http://toodles.yelp.com AWStevens

I think she’s newly pregnant.  Seriously.  Except for the baby bump shield on her tummy, that dress could be very Audrey Hepburn from “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” (HA! Bet I made you think of THAT song…).  This chick is a skinny bitch and that dress would have you think otherwise.  OUT

  • Lori Greenberg

Oh, this is bad. I love Zoey, and generally find her refreshing in the midst of a sea of too-tan-too-blonde-plastic-surgery starlets, even when her fashion choices are screwy. But this is just one of those “oh honey, no” moments. Even Alexis Carrington would quickly put this back on the rack – not that Alexis ever bought anything off the rack, of course – unless she could add a huge fur coat, a cigarette holder, and a giant veiled hat to the ensemble, which she of course, would have werq’ed the crap out of. Maybe if the dress had no other detail except for the giant clown collar, it could have worked, and still would have had that Moschino whimsy, but even so, I can’t see it looking decent on anyone, not even the model. And, speaking of models, is the gal on the runway trying to look like Chloe Sevigny (who could have managed to fug this look up even MORE, if she had gotten hold of this dress first)! My mind is reeling now…eyes are burning…xoxoxl

God help me, but I kind of like it. Not digging the hair and makeup, but there is something about the dress that appeals to me. I’m just going to vote In for the hell of it.

  • Anonymous

The way she’s posed in the first picture, she looks like a broken clown doll. That said, this looks like her style, and she’s well-appointed. IN.

I like her clutch. That’s it.

One of the unfortunate byproducts of this 80′s revival is that it makes all these children look like middle aged women.  Now, a middle aged woman is a fine thing but youth is a fleeting, so why wouldn’t you work it while you’ve got it?

So…….. is she Betty Boop, Joan Crawford, or Tammy Faye Bakker? I can’t tell. Like the clutch, hate everything else.

No redeeming qualities.  The best thing about this dress is the styling on the runway: love the glasses, the hair, and the black hose.  Zooey is an OUT for sure.

  • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

why did she move the ruffle-encumbrance slit to the front? why did she change its whole shape & reason to be?
it’s a better dress on the model, where she looks like she’s being engulfed by a valance & a table runner.
the way ZD’s got it is, instead, child-clown’s birthday party.
& it needs the glasses, too. to put the edge on, so it doesn go sliding into the whip cream. of the pie. thats being thrown.

Actresses forget that no matter how thin they are, they are still 6-12 inches shorter than a model. So features that are dramatic become ‘little girls dress up”

Out!  She looks like one of those Pierrot clowns!

It doesn’t help that it appears she is schlumping in the outfit.  Uma Thurman would rock this dress.

    OUT the dress is nauseous!

  • Erica Moon

I like it. she looks charming – it somehow all works!

I actually don’t mind the freaky collar, but the high-waistedness (or illusion of high-waistedness?) from the gut ruffle make the proportions really strange to me. Out.  Also I really hope we don’t have to wear gut ruffles in the future. :<

She is so adorable but the dress looks like it’s eating her alive. OUT. Hair and make-up and everything else adorable as ever.

    OUT!

SHE is, as usual, more adorable than I want her to be, since I’ve been sick of her forever. Her dress, on the other hand, is OUT. And she needs to fire whomever suggested she wear it, if they are in her employ.

Sue me. I actually like it. IN. Her mascara is awfully distracting though. Along with the dress it kind of makes her look like harlequin.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sntierney Shannon Tierney

IN!  I love the dress, it goes well with her whimsical but pretty style, the
ruffled neckline nicely frames her face and her gorgeous eyes, and I love the
pale pink lips and cheeks with the dark eyeline/mascara which make her eyes pop.
This is 99% win in my book.

way, way OUT. I’m shocked she walked out in that.

  • http://twitter.com/Noacat Schumpert McGee

A definite OUT. The dress is just weird and off-putting and the make-up is a single step too close to Tammy Faye for my tastes. Just a little more mascara… *shivers*

  • http://twitter.com/A_SmallFry AC

she looks like a marionette with those eyelashes and that dress that is so not her. out.

OUT.  Marionette, Pagliacci, Pilgrim . . . very referential outfit, and not in the fashion sense of the word either.
