In or Out: Zoe Saldana in Valentino

Posted on August 25, 2011

Since her last attempt was way too complicated for its own good, it’s nice to see Zoe turn toward the K.I.S.S. principle for her latest look:

Zoe Saldana attends the screening of “Colombiana” in Los Angeles in a Valentino dress paired with Christian Louboutin shoes and a Salvatore Ferragamo clutch.

Sometimes simple and chic is a gal’s best friend. We love this color on her and we love that she’s wearing the most basic of pointy-toed pumps in a fetching cream color instead of that godawful Silly Putty color that’s been making the rounds. We don’t want to sound like traditionalists, because we love a good funky or interesting shoe, but sometimes an outfit calls for the simplest shoe possible. Many stylists would have paired this dress with animal-cage shoes, but someone in the Saldana sphere used common sense, thankfully.

The lace back adds some interest to the dress without making it fussy. Love the fun earrings; only so-so on that bracelet, although we have to admit, it’s unique. The clutch is simple to the point of being nondescript, but we don’t mind. The whole outfit feels effortless and put-together at the same time.

VOTE NOW!

IN! Pretty, sexy, chic!

OUT! Boring and colorless!

Anne Hathaway’s Bridal Rodeo Queen getup was wildly debated, but the Minion Opinion came down on the side of OUT.

    No question – IN.

    • Anonymous

Ditto on the no question — complete in! Love every piece to the outfit and she looks stunning.

    • Anonymous

Completely agree. I was surprised this was even put to an “in or out.”

    • Nicole Merrill

      Samesies!

  • A little bit Barbie on the matching earrings and bracelet, but I like. It’s a good summer color that makes her look good. IN

    • Anonymous

I totally agree, not a fan of the jewelry matching each other and the color of the dress, but otherwise it is a great chic look.
      IN

  • What fabric is that dress? Kind of odd. But she rocks anything imo. I loved the last dress and I love this! <3 IN!!!

  • Boring, but in.

  • MilaXX

IN and I think Zoe has become my new girl crush.

    • muzan-e

Amen. This is luminous. And I could watch her smile pretty much, oh, all day long. *g*

In In In! Does it count 3 times?

IN! She looks so beautiful and put together.

Question- What material is that dress? Is it leather?

    • Sure hangs and drapes like fine glove weight leather would.  Dunno though.

      • Anonymous

I thought it was leather, also.

  • Nicole Dalton

There’s even a question here? Total IN!

  • Anonymous

    Meh

It looked a little bridesmaid (but pretty), until I saw the back. IN!

That dress is adorable.  I’m not a fan of shoes with extremely pointed toes, but those aren’t as bad as some I’ve seen.

Best thing?  That gorgeous smile that reaches all the way to her eyes.

    In.

  • OUT
all too matchy-matchy to me – earrings, dress and bracelet are pretty much the same coral shade.  The dress isn’t of an interesting shape or anything and not doing anything for her

  • total IN. Top to bottom. Perfection in every detail.

  • Anonymous

    In – so pretty!

  • I like that the color complements the surroundings—a nice standout to that black and red background without clashing.

  • Sigrid Harris

So very, very in. There’s just enough detail to keep it from being boring and she looks stunning.

  • Anonymous

In.  She looks good and the dress is flattering.  I might have picked different jewelry, but it’s not offensive.

  • ha.  Easy IN

  • bookish

I love it! IN! The fug girls showed this outfit this morning but didn’t include a shot of the back. I love it even more now.

  • She’s back! IN!

  • Nithya Subramanian

Definitely IN. Should’ve been a WERQ, really.

  • Anonymous

I can’t believe Anne is Out! That dress is stunning! So many lace haters :(.. Zoe is on the mark too. Big IN from me.

    • Anonymous

It happened so fast too!  Brought low by clunky shoes and a gorgeous lace dress. What a world!

IN. For all the reasons you stated – and I love the bracelet! She looks chic and put together, and she knows it.

  • AJ

Definitely IN, though my first thought on seeing that lace on the back was “If only Andie had made this dress with Iona’s frills.”

  • Totally in.  Cute, effortless, great details.

It’s a little matchy, but I can’t give anyone who looks this fabulous anything but an IN.

  • Terence Ng

Despite how much I do like it, there’s something off about it to me. Nevertheless, IN.

  • Love it. In, In, In.

  • Anonymous

This is definitely an improvement over the last outfit.  I hate the shoes, but I love that bracelet as well as the earrings.  The dress is cute, and it looks really good on her, the color suits her.

  • Is it leather? I don’t like it if it’s leather. OUT (sorry, zoe.)

    • Pennymac

I agree. Leather is an odd choice of material for this. If the other Bitter Kittens hadn’t pointed it out, I’d not have known. Its an OUT for me.

      • Anonymous

Leather and lace – isn’t that a Stevie Nicks’ song?

  • Aly Light

Eh, I think the back makes it look like a cheap night gown, and the lack of interesting accessories isn’t helping. I’ll stir up some controversy by declaring that’s enough to make her OUT, even though I think she looks pretty good.

  • Anonymous

The front of the dress on her is an automatic IN.  I wish it wasn’t leather tho’. Love everything else except the weird cameo-ish bracelet and I really don’t get the 80s lace on the back.  Oh wait, it’s 2011 lace.  Again.

  • Anonymous

It’s about time! I was so sick of her contrived ensembles and I am in total agreement, her look is effortless and chic.

  • The Great and Most High Saldan-essence is always impeccable… even though it looks like the front of her dress was carved out of a pink bovine.

But what is the K.I.S.S. principle? I’ve never heard of it.

  • Anonymous

It’s an IN but but not my favorite from Zoe by a long shot but well surpasses her last effort. I hope she doesn’t have a crick in her neck from making side-on poses to show off the back of the dress. It’s not a great look from the front with the hand on hip pose as it looks like the fabric under the arms has frayed until you get the back view and realize it’s lace.

  • Anonymous

100% IN.  I’m so impressed that they got leather to drape so nicely where it gathers in the front.  Love the back, and love the bracelet.  Only meh on the pointiness of the shoes, but not enough to budge this from being anything but IN.

  • Anonymous

    IN!

    In.

  • I WANT her bracelet. NOW.

In, in, a thousand times in.

  • In.  She looks lovely.

  • IN – simple, chic – lovely.

  • In.  I like the bracelet.

  • Margot Brose

In–that color is so flattering against her skin tone! It’s unbelievably lovely!

  • Totally IN. In fact, I think this is a WERQ.

  • Out. Boring, colorless, drab and yet somehow clashing with all the red that she had to know would be there.

  • Anonymous

IN.  She looks fabulous.  For someone as beautiful as Zoe, sometimes simple is best.

  • Anonymous

Was going to OUT it until she turned around.  That back saved it for me.  IN.

    • Anonymous

How funny! I was going with IN until I saw the back. From the front, the drape and structure of the leather transform the simple shape, while the nails, clutch and pointy shoe keep it from being too sweet in that color. Although I like the shape of the back, the lace of the panels looks cheap and the lace plays to the Barbie doll quality of the jewelry. If the back panels had been almost any other fabric, I would have called this a slam-dunk in.

IN.  I even like the bracelet.

IN!  This is the Zoe we’re used to (and love) seeing.  I especially love the snowflake-ish earrings, and that color really suits her.

  • Anonymous

For whatever reason, I’m not in love. Color’s a little wan, makeup and hair aren’t as flawless as usual. But it’s a weak “In,” not an out.

  • Anonymous

She looks great in the dress, her jewelry is pretty but the  shoes are “meh” A very solid In.

  • IN! Love the dress and the shoes and the earrings.

  • Anonymous

Once I realized that the dress is made of leather, I liked it a lot more. That pleating at the waist looks amazing in the leather. I think the shoes are little too snoozy, but that’s a minor quibble. I’ll vote In.

  • I love it when stars don’t feel the need to wear an outfit in theme with the movie they are promoting.  Wickedly in.

  • Anonymous

    IN to the MAX!

However, I do not like the clutch.

  • Anonymous

Love the dress, it’s a very pretty IN!
But are people really still wearing those pointy shoes??? I guess it’s a retro thing but I thought we’d gotten over that long ago…

  • IN. why not a WERQ?

    • This might be a WERQ for a lesser mortal.  For La Saldana, it’s open for debate (even though she’s obviously going to be IN by a landslide)

  • IN. Classic and lovely.

  • Very nice. I love the connection the dress has to the shoes and clutch. It is a very effortless design that many women cannot pull off, but Zoe always has a strong sense of style which can mean great results like this or the confusing mess she gave us previously. IN

IN, not a doubt in the world.

The bracelet might look better on a darker skinned woman. Though the edging of little stones might be disproportional no matter what. It’s painfully blah, here.

  • GORGEOUS! That’s an IN, by the way.

  • Anonymous

IN. Simple and chic. Maybe a little matchy-matchy with the shoes and clutch, but a minor quibble.

IN! She looks so pretty–that color is great on her.  But when she turns around… SHAZAM!  Fabulous!

Totally agree about the shoes, earrings, clutch, makeup.

Now that we’ve got all that good stuff out of the way, is there any way we can put a ban on the “OMIGODIGOTTAPEE!” stance?  Because I’m over it, and I know I am not alone.

    So elegant. Very Audrey Hepburn.

From the front I wanted to know why the dress was ripped and had jagged threads under the arm.   From the back it seems that the ragged edge loose threads were at the end of the lace.  I really dislike that effect.  But otherwise this is pretty good.  Far better than the last one.

Confession: I hate most shades of pink, and I’m extremely wary of muted tones on women of color (which I am), so I wish the dress was another color. However, the outfit and total look is as flawless as Ms. Saldana’s beauty. And it’s also the perfect get-up for a movie premiere – not too casual, not too formal, pretty but not pull-out-all-stops glamorous. If there were a handbook on how a celebrity should dress (and good thing there isn’t because then what would we judge?), these pictures would be in it.

    • Anonymous

I am an old woman of no color.  Therefore, I am clueless about the use of muted tones on women of color.  I am trying to conjure up something like this in my brain and can’t think of anything. I always felt like virtually any tone of women of color was gorgeous.  Can you help me see what you mean?

      • Anonymous

Sorry about the late reply. I don’t always check my regular email, and Disqus isn’t exactly prompt about informing us someone replied to a post. Nothing springs to mind as far as a good comparison of muted vs. saturated color on a woman of color. You could take a look at the red in the picture and picture frames Zoe Saldana is standing in front of and compare the way it looks against her skin vs. the way the pink in her dress looks. To my eye – and color is perceived differently by everyone – muted tones tend to wash out the tones in skin with color, and brighter or more saturated tones tend to complement the skin’s tones. Of course, it depends on the tones in one’s skin to begin with. But I honestly cannot think of an example of a woman of color looking her best in a muted or heather tone.

        • Anonymous

thank you! that makes perfect sense!
