In or Out: Olivia Wilde in Chloé

Posted on August 16, 2011

Oh, Miss Livvie. You really have to stop this. We’d like to feature someone else on the red carpet, but you insist on showing up in these eminently discussable outfits every time.

Clever girl.

Olivia Wilde attends the 2011 VH1 Do Something Awards in a Chloé gown paired with Jimmy Choo shoes and Dana Rebecca Designs jewelry.

Chloé Resort 2012 Collection/Model: Jacquelyn Jablonski

Okay. It would be good to start off with the parts we liked. Don’t worry, it won’t take long.

1) The color. 75% of red carpet wear is either metallic, white, black, or some variation on “nude.” In other words, practically colorless. The other 25% is mostly taken up by shades or red and the occasional blue. It’s refreshing to see a mint green for once.

2) The makeup. She’s beautiful, but she’s got some sharp, striking features and a lot of the time, her hair and makeup don’t seem to take that into account, leaving her looking a little Robot Girl. Here, she looks soft and pretty. That hair? We can accept it, but we’re not crazy about it.

Now. Let’s discuss the things we don’t like:

1) The dress.

IN! She looks li–

Oh, all right. We’ll give you the rundown: crimes of excessive pleating, crimes of giving a grown woman angel wings, crimes of limp, sad necklines, crimes of far-too-large keyholes, crimes of awkward hem length. Also, the shoes look too heavy and don’t seem to go with the dress. Clutch is nice.

VOTE NOW!

IN! She looks like a minty fresh angel!

OUT! Sexually confused sister-wife

Y’know, she really needs to get away from the polygamy cult looks because we’re getting tired of busting out that joke.

Jason Momoa’s unfortunate attempt to “Clark Kent” his innate studliness failed and the minions rose up as one to declare him OUT.

It looks like a window treatment from Sears. Out.

It kind of looks like my drawstring laundry bag, only more creased and messy-looking.

        LOL! Exactly

    • Anonymous

Buh-LAND!  It looks like her dress needs some mood elevation drugs.  And the length is too Mother of the Bride for me. Out

    • Vaniljekjeks

I don’t like the dress, but she looks really great.  She could look chic in my curtains.  In.

OUT – Sister wife made her dress out of shiny curtains this week.

      • Anonymous

But then she added a chest slit. She’s totally the brazen sister wife. I bet she flirts with the minister.

      Oy.

WTF? Whyyyyy?? What’s wrong hon, why so sad and more important, why are you wearing your grandma’s mu mu? Just stop. Come here, let’s hug it out. Don’t cry, you’re still pretty.

    • Anonymous

I like the color, I really do. It’s not a popular one but it suits her.

      Way too many pleats.

      Out.

Naughty Jehovah’s Witness is not a good look for anybody. Her hair is a mess!

I’m going as a Wanton Angel for Halloween!

Is that a variation of Heavenly Harlot?

    • http://twitter.com/democracydiva Democracy Diva

OUT, even though the color is superb. This is clearly a dress that works only on a model – even a model-beautiful, tall woman like Olivia doesn’t have the proportions to work this dress. “Sexually confused sister-wife” definitely hits the nail on the head.

      • Anonymous

If the hem hit her the same place it hit the model I think the dress would work.

      • Anonymous

I agree, plus I don’t think the polygamist compound jokes ever get old.

    • Anonymous

It looked better on the model because she didn’t have a massive gaping keyhole, but then again, the model has no boobs at all to speak of. OUT – the color is cute, but the dress does fall a little flat and I’m not wild about the length.

      • Anonymous

It’s not like Olivia is burdened with massive breasts.  She has small breasts and wears them proudly, which is totally refreshing.  I’m not sure how having massive mounds weighing you down became the ideal, but I’d rather see someone wear their small boobs with pride than stuff silicon in there.  As someone who has naturally large breasts I can attest to the discomfort of dragging them around.  Back pain, neck and shoulder pain, the torture of bras, never being able to wear the cute clothes made for the skinny girls.  It’s really not something to aspire to.

One of the things I like Olivia is her obvious pleasure in the body she has.  So if she can’t rock a dress like that, think about what it would look like on anyone more endowed.

        • Anonymous

I took BeeBeau’s comment to say that the fact that Olivia has SOME boobage makes the keyhole larger, whereas the model’s chest allows the fabric to lie flat without pulling outward at all.  Not saying Olivia’s are too small, saying they’re too big for the dress to hang right.

    • Anonymous

Awful.  Did you notice that in the first picture, where she apparently is in the “I gotta pee” pose, it looks like she has her shoes on the wrong feet?  Just one of the many reasons why they should all stop standing this way.

      • Anonymous

That’s one of the first things I noticed!  It’s one thing in a shorter dress, but when the hem is near your ankles, you’ve gotta not do that.  Also, OUT.

      • Anonymous

I know! And it is pointless to pose like that in this dress anyway. That pose does nothing to make her slimmer in this getup.

    • Anonymous

      too long, amongst other crimes

    • Anonymous

the dress is full stop hideous, and that gotta pee pose combined with the length of the dress makes her feet appear like they are on the wrong leg…OUT

      • Anonymous

        I like your name, honey.

    • Anonymous

Out. She looks…dowdy. How can someone that stunning look dowdy? I have a sad.

    • Anonymous

Out.  It looks like a nightgown my mom wore in the early 80′s.  I do like the color and the clutch, but that’s it.

    • Mariah J

I don’t know how you can accept the hair, its pretty awful. This is an easy OUT

    • Anonymous

Other than the slit down the front, this is me in my choir outfit in high school, and yes, including the bangs that won’t behave – in the 70s!!  I jut love Olivia, so it pains me, but OUT.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

It’s the kind of dress that looks beautiful in motion, but looks dull at rest- a nice necklace would help. You’re right- too much keyhole.

      • Anonymous

You’re absolutely right!  That’s why I’m almost convinced by the shot of the model, where the skirt is floaty and lovely.  Not for standing still, and therefore an odd choice for the red carpet.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=513945580 Megan Patterson

It looks a lot better without the big tit slit, but it’s still pretty terrible, so OUT. Those little pleats are definitely something that should be used sparingly. And only on a skirt.

    • Anonymous

I don’t know who, besides that one model, could wear that dress and not look dowdy despite the giant keyhole.

      OUT

    • Judy_J

      Hideous.  OUT.

Wow. I’m having flashbacks. Did Vera ever wear this on “Alice”?
      Out, BTW.

Out, Out, Out.  Dull, ill-fitting dress.  If that dress can make HER look pudgy and bland, it needs to go in the trash, asap.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_B53PQYXSJR4YJBV3J6BWYSICRQ Jamie

OUT – too mother of the bride looking to steal the spotlight and failing

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

It’s too long.  Even on the model, it was a bit long, but still much, much better than the ankle length she’s wearing here.  When will people learn that long loose skirts and long loose sleeves together on one dress look like you’re hopelessly old-fashioned.

    • Jacqui

OUT! Ugly dress, hate the hair. Love the clutch but that’s about it.

    • aimee_parrott

She looks pretty… from the neck up.  The rest of it is just too horrible to discuss.  I like it (a little bit) better on the model, because the length isn’t so off.  I do like the color on her, but this one isn’t even close.  OUT.

    • Anonymous

      OUT!  OUT!  OUT!

    • Anonymous

OUT!  The dress is too long and too old looking for her.  The model is an improvement due to the styling with gladiator boots giving a BOHO look but I really do not like this dress at all.

I cannot undestand why anyone choose this dress of the stylist’s rack.

    • Anonymous

OUT. That dress adds 20 lbs (plus) to a young, lithe woman. Its a crime against fashion.

    • Anonymous

I wish it was shorter, like on the model.  Out.

    • http://www.what-the-frock.com Dana WhatTheFrock

Maybe I’m kind of in love with her or something, because although all signs point to OUT, I’m still feeling IN on this one.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_BA6BTBV4V3MQRX6K2HDEL7Y7TU MerridithK

How could she have looked in the mirror and thought she looked stylish?  How did that happen?

Who made that clutch?  Who made that gorgeous clutch and where can I buy it?  Is it vintage?  It looks vintage!  I LOVE that clutch!

Oh. Olivia. Out. Except for the clutch.

    • Anonymous

      No.  Just no.  OUT.

    • Anonymous

The dress looks much more interesting when moving in the runway photo.  Standing still, it’s pretty polygamy-cult-ish.  As your Eminences said, color, hair and make-up are nice.  But since the dress is the main deal–OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/asciident Melissa Della

It *might* have worked if she was as tall as the model or they’d hemmed it up. As it is, wow is that ever too long on her. OUT

    • Anonymous

Is this the new thing now? Cult-chic?

    • muzan-e

That dress is made for one thing, and one thing only:

Teenaged brunettes racing delicately through Labyrinths in search of David Bowie.

Neither she nor the model are Jennifer Connelly circa 1985. It’s not their fault it looks awful.

    • Anonymous

I like that she is at the “Do Something” Awards. Hey Olivia: Do something, like put on another dress!!!

I dig the keyhole neckline. Hmm…but that’s it. The fabric looks like quiana from the 70s, and the pleating and color look 70s to me, too. The length stumpifies a clearly not stumpy woman. And 3/4 length angel sleeves? Yowza. Sleeveless might have improved this look, but not enough to make it an In.

      Out!

Ugh OUT.  She looks like a drunk bridesmaid who fell down in her hideous, unmatching shoes only to tear a hole right in the middle of her dress.  I’m sorry, TLo, I’m all for color, but not shiny pleated dressed-to-match-the-theme color.

    • http://twitter.com/ILikeShiny Cindi Williams

It’s one of those dresses where it looks good only if you are continually running in slow mo…like a Baywatch chick.

    • Anonymous

Apparently, one must be flat, and in perpetual motion for this to work…

      OUT!

I could tell from the pic on the homepage it was gonna be OUT…the pleats and sad, saggy neckline were a dead giveaway.

This looks like a 1940s dressing gown…needs mint green fuzzy heels and a turban to complete the look.  (She should have left it in the boudoir.)

    • Grace Ritt

I mean, she always looks chic, but…this is OUT.
But it’s so cool how much she experiments. She makes me love her even though I’ve never seen her in anything.

    • Anonymous

The opening on the hospital gown is supposed to go in the back, and they’re really not appropriate for red carpets.

    • Anonymous

Everything above the neck is soft and pretty, but Ms. Wilde needs to give Mrs. Roper back her nightgown.OUT.

**Note to celebs; when wearing a long dress where your feet peak out, please don’t pose with your legs crossed, it looks a little freaky.

    • http://profiles.google.com/mercbubble42 Jessica O’Connell

Agreed, OUT. I like the clutch but that’s about all I like.

    • Anonymous

      Out.

I kind of like the dress on the model, but I think it would (and does) look frumpy on any woman with any curves whatsoever.  I also kind of love the shoes the model’s wearing, so it’s probably an overall-look sort of thing that I like there.

    • Anonymous

      Oh, hell no.

    • Anonymous

I love her, but she really needs to fire whoever put her in this HORRIBLE dress.

    • Anonymous

I hate the length, it’s a long, floaty dress so should flow to the ground. It looks like it shrunk in the wash. Definitely OUT!

    • Anonymous

OUT.  i dont care for the dress at all & even i can figure out the shoes dont belong.

    • Tamara Hogan

The dress makes her look like she’s a 70′s housewife dressed up to go to the neighborhood key party, but I love the purse.

    • MilaXX

      OUT!
Sexy sister wife dressing is not the buisiness, and I hate the hair & shoes are too heavy. The only things I do like is clutch & the makeup.

    • http://profiles.google.com/jenna.thomasmckie Jenna Thomas-McKie

Out.  She looks like she’s wearing a nightgown someone ripped, and then she put it back on and pinned it at the neck to keep it from falling off.

    • Anonymous

She must be a lot shorter than I thought, based on how comically out of scale the dress’s proportions are on her vs. the way it looks on the model. Huh. For some reason I thought she was tall-ish.

    • Christine Campbell

I can literally feel the whiplash from the last post about her (in the amazing Gucci) to this.  OUT.  Damn it, Olivia!  You’re too beautiful for that mess!  In the second photo, your sleeves look like someone’s got an airhose stuck up the back of your dress.  Is that the look you were going for?

Out. I had a dress like that for my 10th grade dance in 1977. I looked great in the green, but I didn’t have a keyhole or so many, sloppy looking pleats!! And her make-up seems overdone.

    • Anonymous

the fabric is very pretty, but the color and the style are not so great. And the shoes are the wrong color and too heavy for all that crystal pleating. Also, I had to study the photo to figure out why her feet are reversed. So, did she have to pee really, really badly, or is that some kind of weird RC stance?

Why is this woman everywhere wearing fancy borrowed clothes?! Wasn’t she a no-name actor on House?! Also, I agree, the dress is sized/tailored wrong for her. It should fit her more snugly and be hemmed shorter. It’s adorable on the model, who btw, actually fills out the dress better than this lady, which is rare.

      • Anonymous

Holy Cow! I forgot she was in House until you posted. I think she’s in that Cowboy-Alien movie; maybe she’s inspired by the costumes and rocking a Circa 1880s look.

        • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

She was also in Tron Legacy and Bickford Shmeckford’s Cool Ideas, Year One, The Change-Up,… plus a few others.  And she wears clothes well, takes risks with her fashion all the time, and is definitely on her way up, so a lot of designers want to dress her.

    • Robert Sanchez

Bad length, and is there a wind machine behind her in one of those pics?

    • Anonymous

Sexy confused sister wife it is!  I saw this elsewhere are thought it was atrocious.  It manages to make her boxy and shapeless, and she’s anything but that.  All that pleating is just too much, the length is all wrong, those sleeves are horrid and the fabric looks cheap.  There is literally nothing about it I like, not even the color and I do like a mint green.  I tried to imagine how you could tweak it to salvage it and couldn’t come up with anything.

And while her makeup is good, her hair looks awful.  She managed to make it look like she has thin, wispy hair and that is not a complement.  Then combine that wispy back with the in-your-face bangs in the front and you’ve got hair schizophrenia.

And those shoes are just ugly.  I can’t think of anything I’d like them paired with.

      She is so, so OUT!

Well. I do like the color, her makeup , and the clutch. I kind of like the dress in general because I think it would look wonderful in motion–I really like the model’s picture where she’s striding down the sidewalk in it. Standing, the pleats just look like pleats. Agree that the shoes are too heavy, but they’re worlds better than what the model was wearing, which looked like some sort of orthopedic brace.

    • Susan Crawford

Way too much dress – it overwhelms her. But I love the clutch! Ultra cute!

    • Anonymous

      Sinfully awful. So sad.

    • sonictofu

Proportions are bad, hair is regrettable.  Face is pretty, clutch is fab, but they can’t save it – out.

    • Anonymous

I like the clutch but that dress is like the one Rachel Berry wore in the alcohol ep of Glee. OUT.

    • Anonymous

Well, at least she’s not wearing the hideous polio calliper shoes the model is wearing…

    • Anonymous

She’s fierce no matter what. IN

    • oohsparkley!

It’s like handicapping in golf, they’ve tried (and succeeded) in frumping her up, down to regular non-hollywood standards.  Although her face is still gorgeous.  It has the distinction of stumpifying her and adding 20 pounds. And the color on my old monitor looks blah and I love a mint green, but it isn’t bright enough. OUT!

    • Anonymous

What I don’t like is that the pleating of this dress erase completely her waist.
I think she didn’t watch that dress on a runway or in a photoshoot otherwise she would have noticed the big no-no in the fashion world : if an outfit make an underfed model look normal sized, don’t put it on !

    • oohsparkley!

I love TLo and the commenters here!  So creative with the disses.  It’s fortunate that I have next to nothing to do at work today, so I can read all the snark.

    • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

i love the model’s shoes. the dress only sort of works on a very well staged model elsewise perfectly turned out; so, i think, sans staging it probably wont work elsewhere.

The dress is terrible. If my gyno ever wants to make their gowns more fashionable this dress is a top contender. The hair is really bad too, come on. My hair looks like that right now and I’m in my house writing all day.

OUT OUT OUT!  The dress has so many problems there just aren’t enough hours in the day.

Yeah…still wouldn’t kick her outta bed, even in Wife #3′s dress.  In.

First thought after seeing this: STAR WARS!!!

    • http://karensbooksandchocolate.blogspot.com/ Karen K.

Oh, no.  So sad!!!  That neckline is just AWFUL on her, length is terrible — it only works on the model because she’s so flat on top and the length is so much better.  Olivia’s shoes are tragic.  She does look like a sad polygamist!!

I do agree the hair and makeup are nice, and the clutch is pretty.

First of all, I have to say how FABULOUS that clutch is.  Were I wealthy with somewhere to carry such a thing, I would immediately have to have it.  It’s beautiful.

      Second…OUT.  Golden Girls prostitute.

      Out. Bad 70′s ripoff.

As I was scrolling down this post, each picture was an even greater out. Except for the clutch. But, still.

      OUT

The color looks good on her.  The dress looks better when its moving then when its still and the pleats are just hanging there,  The length is wrong and the keyhole too big, so out.
      I want that clutch.

      Yikes!!
I’m pretty sure the sister wives would insist on a fashion intervention.
      OUT.

The bizarre sleeves and truly unfortunate and unflattering hem length make this an unmitigated OUT.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1214755227 Meira Niibori

IN.  The only thing I really hate is the volume of the sleeves.  We can quibble over keyhole size or pleating or shoe selection, but those seem to be questions of taste more than absolutes, and I like the overall effect, in spite of perhaps wishing for slightly different choices in the details.

Out out out out out OUT.
Yay mint green!  But OUT.  I think it looks fugly on the original model, too (although the original model’s shoes are to die for, even though they have nothing to do with the dress).

    • http://wipgirl.wordpress.com/ kristel

I like the clutch and the colour, but the rest of it… not so much. It makes her look heavier than she is, I don’t think the hem length or sleeve length does anyone any favours, and the hair is a little too much like mine on a can’t-give-a-crap weekend.

    • Anonymous

OUT. If the hem was shorter (like on the model’s version) and she had flashier shoes I would’ve given her an ‘IN’. The hair and makeup are nice and there are elements to the dress I like but as a whole the look screams I’m the slutty sister wife.

Out. I even kind of like the weird 70′s vintage thing, and the top half looks kind of quirky-cool and sexy in an ironic art school girl kind of way but WHY is that skirt so long?  It’s longer than the one on the model!  I don’t get it.  She looks like a frumpazon.  I love the clutch, though.

      OUT.

      Uhhh….. the clutch is gorgeous!  So… y’know… there’s that.

    • Anonymous

Oh so OUT.  Even if you fixed the worst elements (removed the sleeves and lowered the hemline) it would still look awful and unflattering. That material is so bad.

    • Elena

Hmm, well, I like the color, and I like the idea of this dress but something about it is off-putting. Out.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Out. The dress & styling are awkward, strangely unflattering and surprisingly aging (which, on a woman of 27 is a crime in itself.)  Can we have the person responsible for her makeup and the adorable clutch handle the rest of her appearance next time?

    • Anonymous

Cracktastic. Out. I read somewhere that her face is almost perfectly symmetrical unlike most people which is why some people don’t find her beautiful and/or are cutoff by her face. I think she’s stunning especially in the right clothes. But this ain’t it. Oy

    • Anonymous

Put off not cutoff. Oy. Oy

Agree: hair and makeup look pretty good. Her nightgown…not so much. Out.

Out.  I like the dress, but her shoulders are too narrow for it or something because the sleeves don’t fit right and they look terrible.  It would have been better sleeveless on Olivia.  Too bad, it looks like a fun dress.

Add some helium and a drawstring, and we could all sing “Up, up, and away, in my beautiful, my beautiful baaaallllooooooooon” ….

This is everything bad from the 70s in one dress. OUT.

    • http://profiles.google.com/roseofthestage Emily Rose

Honestly, in my mind, the only fashion crime the dress commits is having the wrong proportions. If she lost about 3 inches off the sleeves, and a foot off the hem, I think it would be lovely. Besides, she accessorized it well, and her hair and makeup look lovely. IN. Just get someone to hem it for you next time, dear.

Out – and I really despise the bangs on her. They do absolutely NOTHING for her face.  NO BANGS, OLIVIA, NO!

This is a mess. Her hairdo could have been great (she finally hid her bobblehead) it makes her look very Frenchy, but the hair looks lifeless. OUT.

    • C S

oh… IN.  I’m a little torn because of excessive pleatyness and the ‘keyhole’ looks more like someone accidentally left the whole door open; but I love her makeup here, the hair is nice.  I too like the soft color and well… the clutch really won me over.  It’s soft and feminine and unique.

    • Anonymous

VERY OUT, but I love that pretty little Art Nouveau clutch.

OUT!  I was thinking that the waist line and the skirt make her legs look REALLY SHORT.  Then I looked at the first picture again!  Her feet are …. backwards!  What’s up with that???  Can’t even tell from the pic that she has her legs crossed.  It’s really strange…

It is not so much sister-wives as it is 82 year old birthday present for a society maven trying to feel young.

    • Anonymous

Yay! I get to give her an OUT! It’s a stupid looking dress in a color that doesn’t suit her. And calling it a color is somewhat generous anyway. It’s like white and silver had one guilty threesome with green that they never talk about but can’t quite forget.

    • Anonymous

OUT! That dress apparently only looks good when it’s moving (and possibly only when it’s moving on a model).

IN! Summery and fresh and soft, for her. You know she picked the shoes just to match the purse. That’s all, sometimes it’s best not to over think. And maybe they’re comfortable.

Out. It’s a disturbing maternity nightgown.

Maybe, maybe if the dress didn’t have the ridiculous sleeves. Plus the length is all wrong. OUT.

I think someone raided Blanche Devereaux’ closet.

    • Anonymous

Dear god of course OUT. Too short to be a long dress, I think it’d be even less flattering as a short or knee length dress, might have been o.k. if worn at the length shown on the model.  Perhaps it’s the angle of the photograph, I hope whomever is choosing her clothes is not letting her loose in dresses as unflattering as this one appears to be. She’s not really a kind of rumpled, well-padded on-the-verge-of-dumpy person, is she? No, I didn’t think so.

The color is nice on her.

      out. GREAT clutch.

Everything is wrong (except the clutch). The dress looks like a cheap bad nylon pastel bathrobe.
