In or Out: Julianna Margulies in Carolina Herrera

Posted on August 30, 2011

Julianna Margulies, as always, has her shit together.

What’s great about Julianna from a style perspective is that she’s incredibly consistent. She knows her looks and she knows her look. She always has. It also means there’s not a ton of variations to her look. She’s been sporting a classically chic NYC style (which occasionally borders on mature, but not in a bad way) for years now, right down to the slicked back center part that’s practically her trademark now. From a bitchy fashion blogger perspective, that’s easy to complain about. Cue: “We’re so bored. She looks like this all the time.” But so what? Style isn’t about change; that’s fashion’s job. Style is about knowing yourself, knowing the image you want to project, and finding the look that suits you the best for your goals. We’ve always respected her for being pretty firm on those questions right from the beginning of her career in the public eye. There are very few fashion disasters in her red carpet history.

As for this look, we absolutely love the skirt. The top makes sense in a played-down, keep-the-focus-on-the-skirt sense. The basic black pumps also serve this function. In fact, she’s pretty much following the style dictate that one piece should be the focus of your look and all the other pieces should serve it. Nothing fights that skirt, not even her hair. The gal knows exactly what she’s doing. You could learn by watching her.

VOTE NOW — BY MAKING YOUR OPINION KNOWN IN THE COMMENTS SECTION, NOT BY PUSHING IMAGINARY BUTTONS, PEOPLE WHO KEEP WRITING US TO TELL US THAT OUR VOTE FUNCTION ISN’T WORKING!

IN! Chic and classic! Eat shit, Gaga!

OUT! Boring and old lady!

Yesterday’s Minion Opinions were as follows:

Vanessa Hudgens’ extremely unfortunate oxymoron known as a “Candie’s couture gown” got a near-unanimous OUT.

Sarah Jessica Parker’s “Princess Anastasia with cat feet” look was widely debated, and although many claimed she was dressing with a sense of humor, many others said they didn’t get the joke. Result: OUT.

Her style’s ace but I don’t think the picture is complete without her superhot husband…where is he? So a provisional IN but even more IN-er if hubby was there!

      • Anonymous

Absolutely. Why not deploy your most beautiful accessory?

That being said, she’s IN, of course, and in fact, I greatly covet the skirt.

IN – If I could look half so good I’d die happy.  That skirt and the shoes makes her legs look great.  There isn’t even a hint of tacky or bad style.

In, but I have nothing else to say about it.  :(

        My sentiments exactly.

    • Anonymous

IN, of course.  She is fantastic.  However, I am not so much a fan of the skirt – the colors kind of bug me.  And I like it better with the topper from the runway, although I recognize that would be a totally ridiculous look for Letterman.

      • Anonymous

I’ll bet it doesn’t photograph quite as well outside…

    • Anonymous

Absolutely agree with your comments about style vs fashion.  I have to admire someone who can express their style over time without looking outdated.

I’m not wild about that top with the skirt.  I think the top is more formal than the skirt, but overall an In.

    • http://twitter.com/Nancer Nancer

Love this look! She’s classic, elegant, very chic! Definitely a big “IN.”

    • Anonymous

IN. My idea of a chic, modern look when you’re not a kid (or trying to look like one, ahem SJP and JA), although I’m not a huge fan of slicked-back hair. She probably has big wavy/curly hair so this is her solution when wanting to look chic. Works for her.

      • Anonymous

        Exactly – like a grown-up!
I was going to post something about this when we were discussing the Julianne Moore awful outfit ( I know – which one! ) ;  it can be really difficult for women to navigate the transition into the late forties/early fifties, when the looks you wore earlier just don’t suit you, but you don’t quite know how to look stylish and appropriate.  I know from my own life that I’ve had several closet-emptying purges over the last few years trying to “grow into” my age, clothing-wise. Leaving behind the styles you loved but don’t work on your more mature body, getting rid of the clothes that speak to the way you THINK of yourself, as opposed to how you look now…it takes discipline – and sometimes an honest spouse or friend! It’s not always easy, and this is a good example of how it’s done.
        Very IN! ( I’m envious! )

        • Anonymous

you said it Victoria. not only has my body changed with age so that my “go-to” dressy look no longer works, I’ve been exercising consistently over the past year so I now have muscles here and leaner lines there. I’m totally confused about how to play dress up with my different body, paler skin, wrinkly neck and unpredictable hair. where are MY gays? I think next time I have to buy something for a wedding I’m going to Google Image Julianna and try to figure out what the underlying theme is behind her look so I can see if it works for me.
Guys I appreciate this post a lot. It helps me.

          • Anonymous

oops, I’m not sure I did the reply correctly – it went to accidentalhousewife but we’re all in the same boat!

        • Anonymous

You so nailed the dilemma of how to dress as you get older. I was always fond of close-fitting tops, but I just can’t wear them anymore. I had my style down perfectly for years. Now I struggle every time I go out.

“getting rid of the clothes that speak to the way you THINK of yourself, as opposed to how you look now”
          Yep, that’s the hardest part.

Oops. Sorry. For a minute there I forgot this post isn’t about me. Julianna is IN. I wish I could vote for her more than once.

          • Anonymous

So maybe there should be a What Would Julianna Wear link that we could refer to before we get dressed!

And jzzy55, I think all these posts help us ( thank you TLo! ) because they help train our eye to pick up on these things, to edit the tacky bag, or question the hair accessories.  Even the make up;  I look at Annette Benning, how she wears very light eye make up now and lets her glasses take over. And looks great! There’s a lot of toning down while still trying to make some sort of impression, not blend into the background. I think it’s about coming to terms with your age and owning your face for what it is. It always seems to be the women who look like they’re trying to hold on that look sad….

I love looking at the blog AdvancedStyle – the older Grand Dames cut from the Iris Apfel mould who just say the hell with it.  I’d like to think I might be one of them someday, but then I look at my 84 year old mother who you can’t get out of her plain white turtle-necks ever since she saw ” Something’s Gotta Give”, so she uses Diane Keaton! ( side note: always afraid of the sun, last summer she told me she needed a new sunblock, because she was avoiding pre-mature aging. So I guess it never stops….)

            • Anonymous

Interesting you brought up the make-up/glasses thing. I went back to wearing glasses about ten years ago after wearing contacts for 30 years. I started lightening up my eye-make-up after that, because I think it looks so much better. When I moved to NC, I applied for a counter manager position with one of the higher end cosmetics companies. (I have a long background as a make-up artist and in cosmetic sales). The company rep I met with was a women who was probably in her late 40s. She also wore glasses, and had on loads of heavy, colorful eye make-up, including a thick line of black liquid liner. She looked ridiculous. And there I was with mascara, a pale eyeshadow and a just a bit of liner on my eyes. I was also wearing foundation, powder, blush, brow pencil and lipstick. She told me I wasn’t wearing enough eye make-up, wasn’t flamboyant enough for the company, and that I obviously didn’t know what I was doing and knew nothing about the cosmetics industry. Most of her opinion was based on the amount of eye make-up I was wearing. Considering there was no way I was getting that job, I should have told her 1) that she looked like a frigging clown, and 2) to fuck off. Also, she did me a favor. Who wants to work for someone that rude and bitchy?

All that to say that not adjusting your make-up to your age is a common mistake(see: Sarah Jessica Parker). And if you think about it, why wouldn’t you adjust it? It’s so much easier and less aggravating.

P.S.: Love the story about your mother. My mother, who’s 87, refuses to wear red because she says it makes her look like an old Italian lady. I had to remind her that she is an old Italian lady. It’s a good thing I can make her laugh.

            • Anonymous

Always good to have a mother with a sense of humor!  Mine also laughed when I told her that “pre” ship in “premature aging” had sailed!  Then she said….”you’ll see….”

Silly cosmetic rep – what could sell make up better than looking like you’re not wearing the make up you’re wearing!

Not crazy about the skirt on the model but JM’s shoe, top and hair choices make it work for me. A definite IN! …. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA on the imaginary button people

IN – Her hands need to come out of her pockets, but otherwise a fabulous look.

I love that outfit.  I don’t like the hair pulled back in a bun with a middle parting–think that style is unflattering on most women.  But still, this is an easy IN.

This is especially good for the Letterman show – her coochie won’t be touching the seat! I always wonder how anyone can be comfortable on a talk show in a teeny tiny skirt. (and, yes, I wonder if they leave germs on the chair…)
      Very pretty. IN

IN, but something about the pairing of these two pieces is not quite right. It needs something. Maybe she should have used the accessories wall more thoughtfully. Slouchy scarf? Or jacket?

She’s totally IN. I love her and her style – she’s just cool, ‘nuf said.

I have a query for the TLo Institute of Fashion Commentary – and, importantly it’s not meant as snark or heaven forbid to question your authori-tay – but, why is Julianna knowing her style and sticking with it consistently not boring and Jennifer Aniston takes nothing but crap for what seems to be the same thing? Is it that we like Julianna’s particular style more than we like Jennifer’s? Is it a NYC aesthetic vs. California-beach-girl type of deal? Inquiring minds want to know!

      Love,
      T.

      • Anonymous

My little mind wonders the same thing, although style-wise I agree way more with Juliana than Jennifer…

(for the vote record, this outfit is way IN, love the fabrics & ladylike silhouette)

      • Anonymous

Just off the top of my head I would say that the difference is that Julianna changes it up a bit, tries different looks within her style parameters, while Jennifer Aniston tends to pull from the same playbook most of the time, same type of dress, same color pallet, same shoe.  Women like JM tend to know the range of things that suit them and work within it in a variety of ways;  if you look up images of her you’ll see lots of different outfits, gowns, pants, dresses, but all in the same sort of tone, lines that flatter her, colors that work with her coloring ( generally speaking ).  JA tends to wear the same couple of shapes and colors to the exclusion of anything else ( generally speaking! )

Of course – I would also admit a NY bias anytime!
