In or Out: Garcelle Beauvais

Posted on August 11, 2011

We saw this one yesterday while working in the T Lo Cave using the T Lo Fabulosity Scanner to find pictures of the stars of “The Help” on the RC. “Put a pin in that,” we said in our best Valerie Cherish voice, “We’re definitely going to want to talk about that one later.”

And lo, later has come. Well-schooled minions will scroll down and instantly see why we wanted to talk about this one. It pushes a lot of T Lo buttons.

Garcelle Beauvais attends the premiere of “The Help” in Beverly Hills, California. Blouse by Equipment, pants by Elizabeth and James and shoes by YSL.

Namely, the two buttons labeled “More Color on the Red Carpet” and “Ladies Should Look into LadyPants for the Red Carpet More Often.” They’re really big buttons.

This, for us, is a total Monet of an outfit. When we saw it in thumbnail, tiny gay gasps escaped our lips, but the minute we saw it in detail, the needle on the fab-u-meter started dropping rapidly. Initial kudos for the color and the pants, but the former isn’t working and the latter doesn’t fit.

Bright, colorful separates are IN in a big way, but these particular shades of yellow and blue look awfully harsh next to each other. A paler yellow and a more aquamarine blue would be right in line with current trends and look a lot softer and prettier on her. No matter the color choices, you just can’t escape the really bad fit on those pants. They’re too high on her waist and too tight across her hips. It doesn’t help that she obviously shoved her hands in them a couple of times, stretching them out. Nothing says “My pants are too tight” better than hips with fabric ears.

Then there’s the rather unfortunate length, which makes them look like pajama bottoms. Picture this in the colors we suggested, the pants perfectly tailored and stopping just at the ankle, letting the world see a kickass shoe. It could have been perfect. Except for the accessories, of course. We actually like everything she’s sporting: necklace, belt, clutch and ring. We just think they’re all too loud for an already-loud outfit. For us, this was a total couldabin.

VOTE NOW!

IN! Chic, colorful and bold! J’ADORE!

OUT! She looks like a banner at a high school football game.

Miss Anne Hathaway and her dingy pillowcase dress got a very stern talking-to by the bitter kittens, the majority of whom voted her OUT.

Such potential! I absolutely agree about the fit. In fact even with these colors, if the fit had been as you guys suggested, she would have been a knockout. At least she’s not wearing a yellow that matches the promos.  Anyhow, a tepid out from me.

      • Anonymous

Yeah – what EZ said. OUT from here.

      • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

when I first saw this, I swear I thought she was trying to match (and failed)

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MNMVM2GPVUEIOJXBOSLCXKAW4U judy brown

Oddly enough, those are a close match for my high school colors.

And I’m also not a fan of pants so long the wearer has no feet.

Honey, if they wouldn’t let you permanently hem the borrowed (too tight) pants you coulda shortened them temporarily with duct tape.

    • Anonymous

The fit is awful and she’s wearing the exact same colors as the poster behind her, so she just blends right into it. It’s very strange. OUT.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Austen-Jane/100002245814326 Austen Jane

I think the matching with the poster was intended. And very, very sad.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2CNDPMVO4W23R5TVC2QMTJ5BZE Heather

The poster-matching was the first thing I noticed. Not sure if this was intentional, but either way it’s unfortunate. OUT. Sorry, Garcelle.

Agreed, this one dies in the details.  The colors are great on her, the hair and makeup are perfect and the necklace is awesome.  The terrible lack of hem on the trousers and their awful fit just drag this down like a set of concrete shoes.  I can see why stars revert to skirts on the RC, because even for the perfect figures, trousers require more fitting, and have to be right.  A pencil skirt in this color would have done her figure more favors for the same color bang.  Out, but with golf claps for trying.

    • Toni Mitt

      Oh no no no.
I love color, but this is just odd.  Both the shirt and pants are a bit too big, although I’m with you that the waist-hip area is too tight.  Then with all the hair,  jewelry and that cute clutch (although who wears a tiny evening clutch with a shirt and pants?) it’s all too much.  Way OUT.  I mean, she didn’t even button her shirt cuffs…

    • Anonymous

Gorgeous woman.  That shade of brilliant yellow isn’t right for her and the pants are wrong wrong wrong in so very many ways.  But I am liking some of the the styling going on here.  The necklace is great. Her hair is terrific and the make up is just right.

    • Jennifer Hofstetter

I actually LIKE the colors, but it fits her poorly and that second photo just makes her look pregnant or something.  I want to give her an in so badly, but those mom pants are downright awful.  She’s just barely OUT for me.  If the pants fit better, I’d be more inclined to forgive the sloppy looking shirt and weird hemline.

OUT but it’s definitely a coulda been. I don’t mind the bright colors and she gets bonus points for keeping the makeup simple. What I do thing is wrong is the fit length of the pants, the matchy matchy shoes, and the unnecessary necklace. For that much color the belt and the ring are more than enough.

      • Anonymous

What shoes? I can’t even see them.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=513945580 Megan Patterson

It doesn’t help that these are almost the same colours as the ones in the poster for the movie.

    • http://profiles.google.com/angelarosesarno angela rose sarno

First- she is a gorgeous woman- it’s a testament to her looks that we still notice that considering how badly her clothes fit.  Right idea, wrong sizes.

Unfortunately, it’s still an OUT when the ball falls 5 feet short of the outfield wall.  Shame. Such potential.

    • Anonymous

No. No, no, no. The pants are too damn long and too high-cut and they cut her in half.

    • Anonymous

Out. She matches the poster. And it’s just LOUUUUUD

    • Anonymous

It’s a bit crayola for a red-carpet outfit and the fit isn’t great, but the colors look pretty good with her skin, and the outfit is different — I give her an in (in all lower case).

I actually love the colors…and don’t mind the avalanche of accessories….I have no idea why. I can totally understand and see EVERYTHING you guys are pointing out.  I’m giving her a pass…maybe I’m just feeling friendly for the 8th time in my entire life. But, whatever, I am pulling my “oh but let’s encourage her!” card that others tend to deploy when Jennifer Anniston manages to wear a slight variation on her usual uniform. So there! :-P Lowercase in!

But get your HAND OUT OF YOUR POCKET!

I wanted to like it, Garcelle, I really did. It’s bold and fresh on paper… but it’s poorly executed. Your shirt should not match the color of your movie’s poster, honey. It blinds people on the red carpet. Your jewelry combo is KILLAH, though so pat yourself on the back. I’ll call this an OUT, but then I’ll feel bad for the rest of the day.

I can see and acknowledge the validity of most of the nits picked (the color combo doesn’t bother me, but the fit issue is kosher), but it’s still ultimately working for me. I think you guys aren’t giving her the same bonus risk-taking points you awarded Miss Diane earlier this morning for her WERQ-despite-iffy-accessorizing-and-hair. This is IN.

I’ll give her an IN. I actually dig the colors and contrast. It’s a crazy bold palette, but it works for me. Sure, the pants are stupid long, but I love how she looks from the ankles up, and that’s good enough for me. Maybe her feet were just having a shy day.

Also, I’m not generally huge on animal print, but I’m digging the skinny leopard print belt here. And that ring! It’s like she thought, “This pizazz could be a little pizazzier.” And that is a sentiment I support.

“This pizazz could be a little pizazzier.”   Love it!  If you don’t mind, I fully intend to steal this phrase & deploy it wantonly!  I also give her an “IN.”   The fit of the pants is poor, but she looks so bold & fierce otherwise, I’ll give her a pass.

I really wanted to like this. I still actually love the colors but completely agree with T Lo about the fit. And the accessories that are too much with already bold colors. Paired with softer tones, I’d love the accessories. But it all comes down to that that fit, which is just so unflattering that I sadly give this an OUT.

    • http://www.facebook.com/WendyLKaufman Wendy Kaufman

My only deal-breaker issue is the pant length. They are dragging. WTF? I am reserving comment on how bright it is, as I bet it’s not so bright in person. Looks like she dressed to match the poster anyway. Personally, I gotta give her credit for that, as I think it’s a hoot and a half.

      • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I agree.  The pants are skosh tight, but it’s really the length that does them in.  Personally, I love the colors.

      love the necklace.

I don’t mind the colors and think the pants are just a little to high-waisted.  but I’d have to give her an IN.

      • Christine Campbell

I think they are they are blue suede YSL Palais….I didn’t realize they were in the pic either until someone else mentioned they were and then I saw the caption. I’m going to give her an IN just for the almost-there factor.  Don’t mind the colors at all, only issues are with the fit of the pants and the wrong deployment of the leopard print belt.

    • aussiegal77

Holy crap.  Pants length will give me nightmares and you’re right, the colour combo with her top is just too much, plus it just fits terribly.  I love that necklace, not sure on the ring, the clutch is great. Ditto the belt.  But….oh wow, those pants.  The horror.

      OUT.

    • http://profiles.google.com/psykid42 Christopher Brathwaite

I actually like the colors, but then again, I’m into the neon. However the accessories are making me wince a little (Really a cocktail ring that size when you’re wear a super chunky glittery necklace? Next to all that color?) and the fit on the pants is making me kvetch. THe concept was in, but due to some serious execution issues, the look is OUT

    • Grace Ritt

OUT. She looks like that weird color-blind person at work. Who likes leopard print things. Seriously, what’s up with the belt?

    • Anonymous

I absolutely love that necklace.  Right up my alley.

Otherwise, OUT.  I love the colors, even if they’re a bit circus-ish.  But the whole fit screams “this outfit really doesn’t fit anymore but I still wear it to the office because they don’t notice anyway.”

And I am SO ready for tree-trunk pants to go away.  I don’t mind a wide leg, as they’re often flattering…but I need to be able to see that you’re wearing shoes!  Plus I’m clumsy, so they look like an impending accident.

    • Anonymous

OUT.  reminds me of my grade school class colors.  ick.

    • Anonymous

Lovely from the waist up, but a disaster from the waist down. I actually like these colors together, but I think she MUST have been trying to match the poster, and that just seems lame. OUT.

    • Anonymous

Can we have some kind of pass/fail option? Because if we were to grade on a curve, she would get an IN. I don’t wear bright colors but I greatly admire people who have the reproductive organs to wear them. I actually think the crystal necklace works with the ensemble as it refracts the light and makes it look a different color from any given angle. So despite the unfortunate pants, I want to give this an “IN”, although it could be simply because she looks so confidently beautiful.

      • Anonymous

Isn’t In/Out Pass/Fail? And you can still grade on a curve and do In/Out. I think sometimes we struggle (I know I do)  with the polarizing nature of the In/Out. No shades of almost, or close….or credit for trying…

        Such weighty matters!

i love the color, but then i’m a painter and i love those straight out of the tube brights.  i think it’s the blinding red of the carpet that kills it.  are these taken in full sun?  anyway, the colors with her intensely beautiful skin are stunning.  true, the pants don’t fit and are a bit too long.  i don’t like ankle length always, as i’m a tall woman and my whole life i’ve had to wear pants that are too short.  i think that length is only good if the pant legs are narrow, and i’m liking the fuller leg here.  all in all, i say in. and what a beautiful, beautiful woman.  she  carries herself like a queen. but can we talk about this hand in the pocket thing, dear?  it’s not very royal.

    • Anonymous

OUT.. I don’t believe I am about to say this, but she needs a little LESS color, and a better stylist.  I would like to say something about the shoes, but all I can say is.. what shoes?  She had shoes on under there?  You’re sure about that?

OUT.  I really wanted to like it but it’s too much – too tight, too long and too bright.  So close, though.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_J7UZXM5BPIPW5X3NBPKYS6YKKU Klenso

My eyes … that bright honking IKEA color scheme … and WHY do people feel the need to slip a hand in the pocket? It just calls attention to the thigh area. Pants WAY too long, poor fit, and the cut … these look like they were picked from the sale rack at Rue 21. If you’re going to wear trousers THAT high-waisted, for God’s sake keep the front simple: no pockets, belt loops, or zipper! The lovely necklace is just wasted, with this floppy old shirt. I just can’t get behind this … a total OVER and O-U-T.

Oh yikes. The color and the accessories can’t make up for the awful fit of the clothes. She looks like she works for the DMV.

Out.  Strictly for the fit on the pants, gives her 30+ pounds she doesn’t have.

OUT. I actually adore blue and yellow together, but this particular blend makes it look like she and the carpet are trying to teach the children a lesson about primary colors. Great in theory, not so much in practice.

    • p. clementine

I will say that the colors might look better in person than in pictures, but the length of the pants… Tepid out from me, too.

Out.  Boys, I was thinking the same as you Out tagline-she looks like she’s attending a UCLA football game.  And the belt…ugh.  She really turned the dial up to 11 here.  I wish it had worked b/c I can see the potential and I don’t want ladies to get discouraged by pants and colors.

    • Jennifer Alderman

I think if the description of an outfit includes “hips with fabric ears” it should automatically be OUT.

    • Anonymous

Those colors scream discount store and the pants are way too long and baggy. OUT.

Why can no one hem trousers anymore?  I can’t be the only one in danger of eating pavement if yards of fabric are dragging under my shoes…

Why in the name of all things commercial and vapid would you dress to match the movie poster of the movie premiere you are attending?  She had to have known what that poster looked like, it’s everywhere!  Aside form that, it’s all a colossal miss of things that should have worked.

Out, for the same reasons listed by TLo.

      OUT

If a woman chooses to go against the norm and wear pants on the RC, then they better be done right!  These are way too tight in the hips, a bit too long, hit her at a horrible spot across her tummy, and, the color of the pant just doesn’t say lux or RC (too casual a color for a RC pant.)  The boldness of the pant color vies for attention with the top, which unfortunately is winning.  A deep navy pant would have been much better.  Also…the belt looks very casual and clashes with the crystal necklace and silver clutch.  Her eye shadow and eyebrows kind of bug me too…now I’m nit-picking… ;)

I do like the blouse and necklace.

OUT for the hem length alone. Not only are her pants covering her shoes, they are dragging on the ground. She looks like a clown.

    • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

IN- The colors look great on her. There’s a fabulous tropical vibe that’s perfect for August, and she looks great in those colors. The jewelry is good, she looks good… I can see the pant issue, but it’s minor She needs to get her hand out of her pocket, maybe sew the front pockets shut, and hem the cuffs a littler. But those are really minor issues all things considered. The red carpet is all about selling the look to the cheap seats and she’s doing that with flare.

    • Anonymous

IN. I do think there are some issues with the fit, but I love the overall style and risk-taking of this outfit.

If either the colors were better or the fit was better, it might be in, but put together it OUT.  The accessories would have looked much better with the colors you suggested.

I can’t get past my hate of the shape of those pants.  The length is terrible, the big sack-shapes of the legs is terrible.  I could live with the color, but the whole design is awful. (NB, I loathe wide-legged pants with a deep and abiding loathing.  I don’t think they look good on anyone, no matter how often the PTB try to foist them on us and tell us to pretend they look good, so there was no chance of me liking these, anyway.)

The match of the top and the signs behind her is unfortunate.  It actually would be a good color for her, otherwise, and that’s not her fault.  That said, it’s nothing special.  It looks like a secretary’s casual-day top.  The only thing making her look at all like she’s going to a formal event is the necklace, which just looks out of place.

I’ll admit to not being a big fan of formal pants, anyway.  No matter what the cut, they always look, at best, like business-wear to me.  But I’d believe they could be done, with the right materials, the right cut, and the right accessorizing–basically, the lady-tux.  This?   Doesn’t have any of it.  It looks like a fancy necklace paired with none-too-attractive running-errands-for-the-boss clothes.  Except for the pants, which she must be stepping on every time she turns around, which would make them impractical for work.

If women are going to wear versions of menswear on the RC, they should have the same rules.  A man showing up wearing silk yoga pants and a tailored shirt with an insanely formal tie would get pilloried for being lazy.  Same rules for Garcelle.  OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/maggie162 Maggie

Amputated feet is an automatic OUT for me and those two colors together seal the deal.  Dial one shade down and find yourself a tailor, missy, and then it’s a solid in.

I cannot get over the hem of those pants. HEM THEM! Love the idea, but: Out. Blech.

I’m giving an In, with a finger-wag to Ms. Beauvais’s stylists to get a tailor to hem the darned pants, and for picking shoes that match the pants (even though I have to say I love those YSL shoes, if those are the ones I’m thinking of….)

    • http://toodles.yelp.com AWStevens

She has a really big forehead, like Helen Hunt big… She needs bangs which are in.  The blouse, belt, and pants are very Junior High/Middle School circa 1983.  Although, I think the belt is chic.  I like the necklace.  Despite her forehead, her makeup is well done.  The hair is a bit too casual…  The whole does not work.  OUT

    • Vaniljekjeks

Out.  It’s unflattering, and just too much for something that does nothing for her.

    • Anonymous

The parts are great, but they aren’t working together well. Wish she had worn sandals instead of suede shoes that match her pants. the color pairing isn’t great. Love that necklace.

Add a touch of red and she’s ready to work at Hot Dog on a Stick.

I’m going to have to vote out, but it is close.

    • Miya Seegmiller

Out. She looks like Homer Simpson in those colors.

    • Sharon Weissburg

Out. She should have taken those colors and put them into kicky little pants and a tailored top… You’re quite right, TLo, they should stop at the ankle and show off a bright shoe (I would put her in a pair of coral or green pumps). I’d also do something fresher with her hair (a clean, simple, bouncy pony?) and maybe show her videos of sneezing pandas to make her stop scowling.

    • Anonymous

you forgot to mention that she matched her outfit to the movie poster!

she’s very pretty, this one, & i woulda thought she was 32. that said, oh for heavens sake, shorten the pants. were she alive, my mother would scald you for dragging them on the ground–& so, i think, would yrs. i hate the belt, the combo of the belt & the other brilliant colors look like fiorucci c1979, all of which was fab at fiorucci c1979. now, less so, but if it all fit….. & ditch the neck rocks. rhinestones the size of oyster crackers always look tacky.

i hate saying that stuff cos i like her. i think i said it cos i do, if that makes sense.

I’m so disappointed. This could have been such a fabulous look!

I like all of the accessories except for the belt. But that might be because everything else is so in your face, the animal print is REALLY on display.

I don’t really like the ends on her hair either. A little stringy, I think.

Out, with a sad face. :(

I would actually just be satisfied if the pants fit. I still think she looks cute, and as harsh as the colors are, they look amazing on her.

She’s so lovely and this is such a good idea in theory. I really do like the idea an awful lot but boy did she mess this up! First off, as others have mentioned, matching your outfit to the movie poster not a good idea. The colors are too too much (rare for me to think that) and what the heck happened to her feet and why the are the pants so tight?

      OUT. Wasted potential.

I graduated from the U of Michigan (colors blue and yellow, or more correctly, maize, but it’s OK to call it yellow here for our purposes)…and I wouldn’t be CAUGHT DEAD wearing these colors. The fabric looks like plastic and the pants need hemming. Yuck.
