Gossip Girl’s Valentino Bag

Posted on August 15, 2011

Leighton Meester was seen on the set of Gossip Girl in New York, wearing a particularly stylish costume:

To anyone over 40 that top looks totally “Golden Girls lanai,” but this is the trend in florals right now and we kind of like the explosion of color, The thick bands of trim make the tank top look modern. The pants are something to behold, that’s for sure. Still, we think she looks pretty city-chic here. Anyway, the point isn’t the outfit; it’s the bag:

What do we think, kittens? It’s Valentino.

We like the crisp, structured style of the bag, but we go back and forth on the big bow. Depending on the color, it can look awfully twee; like something a little girl would sport with a pair of plastic “high” heels. Longtime minions know and understand that T Lo don’t generally like big fussy bows on grown women, but T Lo don’t buy or carry purses (no, really), so ultimately the question of their chicness is entirely up to you:

YEA or NAY: Gossip Girl’s Valentino bag?

    I hate bows.

Only if Aliens came and demanded that I carry that bag or 10% of the world’s children be forfeited. Even then I’d have to really ponder my duty to civilization, because I am not particularly fond of children.

Nay. no bows. bows bad. bows dippy.

(note: I write this post in the affected manner that I reserve for discussing topics like bows on the handbag of anyone over the age of 15.)

        • http://www.tomandorenzo.com Tom and Lorenzo

Nope. We’re not implying that either. It’s one tossed off line about how, if you were an adult when Golden Girls originally aired, it’s hard not to see these types of fabrics as solely “Golden Girls” types of fabrics. Not a “bitchslap” to the readership, nor “ageism.”

yup, I love bows too.  but at my age (45) I would just use #2 & 4 as the bows are more subtle.  Love the color combination on the beige one.

Only someone under the age of 25 can get away with that look and that bag. On a woman older than her mid-twenties, it *is* Golden Girls, with I Love Lucy bringing up the bag.

    • margaret meyers

      oooooooh snap!

  • http://twitter.com/sylvia_warren Sylvia

I’d say the rigidity of the bow stops it from being twee.

Don’t like the bows but I am more disturbed by the crotch on those pants.

  • Anonymous

PS, that crotch is just insane! Seriously, those pants don’t fit her at all.

    • margaret meyers

Yeah, so tight and so low they have two crotches.

    Nay.

The purse is delicious.. the top is a @#$%^&* plus size bathing suit!!!!

  • http://twitter.com/herong Heron

Love the bag. But what is UP with the . . . um . . . crotch(?) of the pants??  High waists like that HAVE to be fitted well. Otherwise you get . . . this. Also, her knees look weird.

  • Anonymous

No bows! And I really don’t like that it exactly matches the awful pants. Yes on the floral tank- if it was a flowy top it would be Golden Girls for sure.

  • Anonymous

I know this is about the bag, but those pants are so awful.  Where the hell is her crotch.  Nasty.  The bag is average and not worth the money.

  • Lori Greenberg

Don’t love the bow at all, thought it is perfect for her character, Blair Waldorf (who constantly wore ultra-twee “headbands of power” for the first couple of years on the show). In general, Blair wears some killer pieces, especially her coats, stockings and evening dresses, but her character is always very ladylike. So, the bow bag is right for Blair, but bad for pretty much everyone else. Plus, as far as those HIDDY pants go, I have to quote the Duchess, Michael Kors, by saying, “that crotch is INSANE!” xoxoxl

  • MilaXX

YEA, I like the bag in every variation except the leopard print. I think Leighton looks pretty cute, but the pants look a bit ill fitted. They’re too long and they appear to have a bit of insane crotch going on.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QA5N7E3V45GRANLIXDPR6EGAQE dsgv

How come u guys don’t cover Gossip Girl. You should look into it.

Anyways Blair always dresses like a colourful geriatric. There’s some sort of irony in it.

  • http://twitter.com/BMoke28 Bernadette Moke

That bag is awful!  You couldn’t pay me to wear/carry it.

  • Anonymous

Cute bag but not with that outfit.

  • Anonymous

I like the black and the red versions and the overall retro look of the bag. The other colors aren’t doing it for me. The bow looks too slapped-on in the taupe, beige, and animal versions.

  • Anonymous

NAY!  The bow looks Ok when it is the same color as the bag otherwise it goes right into twee.

  • AudraR

Don’t care for the pants but I like the bag quite a lot.

  • Anonymous

    Hate the pants.

The bag is cute, but I can’t tell from the pics whether it meets my non-negotiables for purses.

    • Anonymous

Oooh!  I’d love to know what the “non-negotiables” are.  Is it the innards?  Do tell…

      • Anonymous

        Innards and .  .  .  outards(?):

        1.  A good closure, preferably a zip
        2.  At least one outside pocket
        3.  Plenty of inside compartments of various sizes.

        • Anonymous

Excellent criteria!  I’d have to give up the outer pocket for pretty, though. :-)

Totally ditsy bag.  Weird size, matronly….and ditto: I hate bows.
And although it’s about the bag….those pants are horrid (hello crazy crotch) and actually the entire outfit is just….NO.

I LOVE!! <3 But I am a big big bow lover :)  I do NOT like her pants.

  • Alina Badus

Meh. It’s an ugly bow on an ugly bag.

Those pants are hideous, too, and don’t even fit her right.

  • Cheri Lee

I think the bow is adorable especially in a contrasting color.

  • Anonymous

Some of them are ok because they’re the same color as the rest of the bag and, so, less obtrusive.  But generally, no to the bow.

    • Anonymous

I just typed the same thing!

      • Anonymous

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDI2DLE7DE3YPW2ONIHBWOVHMA ecallaw

On one of the beige bags and on the charcoal bag, the bow appears to extend across the length of the bag, and somehow I think that minor difference keeps those two versions of the bag from looking too twee.

  • http://twitter.com/JitteryBug Jitter Bug

I was going to say that I like the bag when the bow matches in color.  Then I realized I like those because it hides the bow.  So, basically, it’s a NAY from this corner.

  • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

I want them. I want them all. (Except the leopard print one)

  • S. Jenna Lutz

Nay from me (frankly, for the whole outfit. Ugly top, hideous pants, and what can be see from the shoes is just ugh) but I’m likely not a good judge. I’ve had a long series of traumatic events dealing with butt-ugly big bows, so there is a definite instinctual recoil when faced with them.

The worst still has to be my bridesmaid dress for my brother’s wedding. My sil chose hideous forest green chiffon and taffeta dresses, that on the other bridesmaids (every other gal was 5’3 or shorter. I’m 6’2. Bad on every level, even BEFORE I past out and flashed the church) had huge bows tied at their waist. Sadly, on me – the bow hit in the center of my back, making me look like some kind of demented fairy giantess sprouting green wings at the same level as her brastrap. NOT a good look. Just cemented my complete loathing (the one exception comes is the person wearing the bow is 6 or younger) of all things large be-bowed. Out out out OUT.

  • Anonymous

No to the bow, no to the big flap on the pants, no to the fit and length of the pants, no to the color of the the bow matching the pants, no to the color of the shoes (not that they should match the bag).

  • http://twitter.com/ashinyoconnor Aisling O’Connor

Valentino is doing the chicest in shoes and bags over past few seasons. All lifers. I’d have any or all of these bags in a heart beat.

  • http://www.facebook.com/c.d.barney Chrissy Barney

Yea! I like the big bows, occasionally. When done right they can add a touch of whimsy to an otherwise boring bag- I love the subdued but still colorful combination of green and taupe on the Gossip Girl bag. Admittedly, I’m saying this as a 22-year-old, but most of these are done with such deliberate design that they don’t look tacked on or twee. That animal print one is hideous, though.

  • narita_rayna

on the right girl, this is divine. but you gotta be young & really fabulous to pull it off.  grown women should avoid big bows like the plague though, valentino or not.

  • http://twitter.com/vintagegoddess just julie

    Bows.
    Ugh.
Is the top supposed to be “ironic” and hipsterish? Because to this over 40 gal it looks like something my Grandma wore under a purple gauze big shirt to bingo.

  • sonictofu

    make. the. pants. go. away.

  • Toto Maya

I think it’s cute. Yeah, it’s a little twee, but I can forgive it this time. I like how the bow is rigid and flat, if it was bigger or looser it would be ugly.

  • http://twitter.com/kmc1138 Kathleen Coyle

That bag is so prissy perfect I could die.  A thousand times yea.

  • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

the taupe & grey w/ the appropriately sized bows are nice. the others are silly, the one she’s carrying looks like a cheap purse to which someone too young for taste affixed a plastic bow in a clashing color. oh bad, bad.

the top’s horrible, dont care if it’s trendy, trendy doesnt mean it’s good. remember when padded shoulders & drop waists were trendy? together? in hot pink satin? w/ even bigger bows?

i would actually love the pants if they fit.
she’s skinny. & currently not poor. so why dont they?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_H6FPGG4IMVA2AUSY6XXUZ3AMKY Miriam S

I don’t mind bows, but this is hideous. A smaller, more delicate bag would work with the bow, but this bag is too big and practical-ish (if that makes any sense) for the bow to look good. Without the bow, it would look fine. But it just looks wrong here. So, verdict is NAY.

  • margaret meyers

The bow is one step over the line.  And those pants are so tight you get to have two crotches.

Speaking of the top, I had something almost exactly like that in the ’80s. Floral print (a different floral), the same exact shape, the black bands. Yikes.

  • Anonymous

If you are Barbara Bush or the Queen Mother the bag works. Not loving it!

  • Anonymous

To me, the bag is cute; I just don’t like it with this particular outfit.

Can we not discuss the pants?

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

The whole ensemble is an eyesore. I don’t see anything great about the bag either. Could be the outfit bringing it down, but I’m not crazy about the still photos either.
NAY. All of it. Especially those pants!!!

  • Anonymous

I was totally down with the pants until I saw that drop-crotch. WTF?!? They look so beautifully fit in the waist and hips, and then she’s got a friggin’ diaper between her legs. Ugh.

  • http://profiles.google.com/shawna.ready shawna ready

The crotch on those pants is insane.

  • Anonymous

God, those pants! SO, so bad. Not crazy about the top either…the bag? Well in some of the colors, it’s cute. Not my style, but I don’t hate it. I think the non-flopposity of the bow keeps it from being ‘twee’, but none of them would make me part with my hard earned cash.

  • k_skenes

Yea, in the color she’s carrying; nay in the red and most of the other colors.

  • http://rachbomb.livejournal.com Rachael J.

bags like this aren’t meant for the everyday woman.  I can’t stand a bag that I can’t put over my shoulder.  Then again, I live in San Francisco and take the bus to work.  I need a functionally fashionable bag :)

  • http://profiles.google.com/sntierney Shannon Tierney

I love bows, and bows are quintessential Valentino. The bag is lovely. All of them, except the leopard. The tank
is fun, and the pants are just weird. The drop crotch gets me more than
    anything.

  • Anonymous

Good lord, does this outfit even go together or match? Are they filming GG in black and white these days? Love the bag. Don’t mind the bow. However, I personally prefer the bag with a contrasing bow. It makes it look a bit more modern.

Not crazy about the bow, but when it is the same color as the purse like the red one, it is kinda cute. I don’t like any of the bags with contrasting color bows.

I like the bow that appears to be wrapped around the top of the bag.  The more tratitional bow looks like it should be on a Christmas package or on Barbie’s head.

I like the bag, although it does have a certain Sophia Petrillo-ness to it. The pants, though – those need to be burned with the fire of a thousand angry suns.

I don’t mind on the first black or the red, b/c the bow seems more structured.  Less limp.  And it’s the same color as the bag, so it blends.  But on the ones that the bow is saggy or is in a different shade, I don’t like.  I can’t work up a hatred, but it’s just not for me.  Gonna go with a nay.

  • Anonymous

Meh. Particularly in the one Leighton is carrying, it’s just one sad drab color layered on another sad drab color. The fact that there’s a bow involved just makes it, well, sadder.

  • http://www.GiftedCollector.com Nancy Abrams

Those pants look as bad as any torn apart on this very web site during this and any season of Project Runway, How could anyone put those on and think they look good? The whole ensemble is a series of mismatches. The summery floral top does not go with the badly tailored grey trousers and the handbag looks borrowed from Betty Draper. My dog could pick out a better outfit.

YAY though agreed that the color of the bag and bow make the difference between super chic and dress up. I’m not chic enough to ever actually wear it (nor do I have the money to buy it) but I think it looks pretty fab in most of the colors offered.

Hate the bows, cringe at the pants, but love the top – I love the florals we’ve been seeing in tops lately, especially in these bright colours.

The bows that are the same color as the bag get a yea.  The contrasting colors are nay.  The pants fit horribly and the top looks like something a pre-school girl wears to the playground.

The bag has some style, but the colors of the one on Gossip Girl are major hiddie.

  • Sara__B

Too cute for me, but fine for someone else.
(What’s up with the fit of her trousers, though? The crotch is a good three inches too low. Take it from someone who looked good in high-waisted trousers in the 70s — that’s not how they should fit!)

  • Anonymous

The bag is about the least offensive of the lot….those pants might work on a gal about a foot taller, as it stands they are giving her a serious case of polterwang…i am equally preturbed about the fuschia hooves i see poking out from the pantlegs…..

In general, I’m not crazy about bows. I think this one is marginally acceptable because it is reasonably restrained. It works best where it’s the same color as the purse (namely, the red and black purses).

I don’t care for this outfit–it’s oddly aging for her.

YAY! Although I do agree, the bow isn’t working in all the colors.  I think if you know the character Blair you get this outfit on her.

Love the purses, HATE the pants.  What a horrible fit.

  • Anonymous

The bags are kind of cute so I’ll go with Yea.

    Those pants, however, are hideous.

Nay, with the contrasting bow.  If she had carried the black or the red, with the matching bow, then it would be in.

  • Anonymous

Not a fan of the bags. Too structured for me, and I don’t generally like bows. The only ones I think look ok are the ones with the bows that kind of wrap around to the side – less bow-like! I love Leighton Meester on Gossip Girl (yes, I realize this is an embarrassing admission), and the bag does totally suit her character and the outfit…so I can’t commit to a general nay – just a personal one.

Nay. And people under 40 watched the golden girls. I almost typed, “people under 30,” but then realized I no longer fall into that category :p

Are the pants supposed to look like they’re pulling?  No like.  Meh on the purse.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

I think the black looks mega-sophisticated. The rest look twee.

  • A. Valera

I have that purse!  Oh, no…wait.  I had that purse — back in 1984.  The big ass bow matched the big ass Madonna bow on my head.

  • irielle

I like the bag. I agree with Sylvia that the rigidity of the bow keeps the bag from looking twee.

  • Anonymous

I love that handbag! I want it in any of the colors, but particularly in the red. YEAH!

  • http://profiles.google.com/ballinger.jl Jessica Ballinger

It needs SOMETHING there to punctuate the bag, but I’m with TLo, the bow isn’t working for me.

  • http://profiles.google.com/awilsongirl Amy Wilson

I have been searching in the local thrift stores for a structured bag like these for months- they feel very “Mad Men” to me but alas, my search has so far been in vain. Normally, I am not a bow person but I like the stiffness of these- they seem to push the bows into more of a fashion direction as opposed to a dress-up (as in playing dress up, not being formal) feel. I would totally carry one.

Cute bag.  Horrible, horrible, dreadful pants.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1374511853 Sara Yungwirth

Yea on the purse, but Nay on those pants…. I just have to say.

  • Anonymous

In certain colors I think it’s cute. *ducks* What’s with those crotchtastic pants? Yeesh!

    • http://profiles.google.com/phyllis.craine Phyllis Craine

The rise is too long  (e.g. rise is the length from the waist in front down around to the crotch and back up to waist in the back)

      • Anonymous

I’m aware of that, thanks, but I still can’t believe the wardrobe dept. thought it was a good idea for her to wear them. Ugh.

  • Anonymous

    not as ugly as ageism

  • Patricia Biswanger

YEA.  It is to die for, particularly the red one.  I would kill for that bag.

  • Toni Mitt

Must have them.  All of them.

  • Anonymous

so glad pants that eat your wait are apparently in.

    not.

  • bailey debruynkops

i dont like the bag’s colors and theyre too small. cute tank though.

Those pants look like a particularly bad Project Runway entry.  The bag is cute.

  • Anonymous

When the colors match, it’s good.  Her’s, the bow looks like it’s something they found in the costume room and glued on to look like a knockoff.

    LOVE.

I think I had a purse like that when I was 5. It was made of plastic and I carried my markers in it.

And those slacks make me cringe–they look geriatric *and* ill-fitting.

  • Anonymous

maybe my fashion pointer is off today, but i don’t like her outfit or the purse..out (well, the shoes look ok, but otherwise…)

  • Anonymous

I think the bags are very retro-chic but look better in the bolder colors.  The beiges just don’t work, even with the leopard print.  Also, bows are sort of a Valentino signature so I can see the use here.

  • Anonymous

I’m not into bows, so the bag is a NAY for me.

But…more importantly: that crotch is INSANE!!!!

  • Anonymous

The bag is a Yea, especially the animal print version.  THOSE PANTS???  Yowza, they are heinous.

  • akprincess72

NOT a bow fan, but the red purse is a nice red.  The outfit?  Just no.

  • Anonymous

Shit, I like the bag, especially in red, but I’m a lolita, what do I know? I only wish the handle didn’t look like nipple clamps.

bright florals with khalil is disgusting, though, and screams of dressed-in-the-dark.

  • Anonymous

And I should mention, as I sit here stitching giant bows onto headbands, that bows are the future and there’s nuttin’ you goils can do about it.

    Gorgeous! YEA

It appears she’s holding grandma’s bag outside of the women’s room

  • bethannstamps

ugh. i like structered (spelling?) bags, bows you gotta be kidding. who over the age of 8 wears bows?  the top is really Golden Girls meets nonhip granny all the way

  • http://pissiechrissie.tumblr.com/ Chrissie

I actually said out loud, “oh my god that bag.” I love it. I would compliment her in public on it. It’s girly yet structured; I think it’s perfect.

  • Anonymous

I’m not particularly a fan of big bows but I think it’s a great bag for her character.  Also the animal print version is pretty cute.

  • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

Love the bag, hate the pants, neutral on the top.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=513945580 Megan Patterson

I like the bag, I cannot believe they are letting Blair Waldorf out of the house wearing Serena’s terrible pants.

  • http://twitter.com/elialger Eliana Alger

YEA to the red one!!!! I ♥ it!…NAY to the rest of them

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1378141705 Gretchen Jacobsen

I like the purses that have the pleats. They remind me of a bag I bought this weekend at Goodwill a hell of a lot cheaper. The pants look like they are from the stilt walker challenge. Also, if you think that floral rocks then also head to Goodwill. The look for less cause it’s  from the actual 80s.

  • oohsparkley!

I like the bags, they can appear too twee depending on the rest of the ensemble.  Those slacks have a horrid fit in the crotch/rise.

  • Anonymous

Love the bag. I’m just cheered by the triumphant return of structured bags in the last year or two.  If I had never saw a shapeless hobo bag in my life again, I’d be just fine with that.

  • Anonymous

    Nay.
No big bow will ever set one flap on one of my bag.
OK, I won’t have enough money to treat myself with a Valentino’s, but still. No.Big.Bow.

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

    I like it.  Yea.

  • http://twitter.com/Littlegrr Mary Nau

Love the bag and her top, but what is with those pants?

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

    Love it.  Yea.

  • Valerie Owens

yea on the bag and the top. Pants are hiddy.

  • Shawn Hill

    YEA! So cute!
