Giorgio Armani Fall 2011 Ad Campaign

Posted on August 16, 2011

It’s time for our end-of-the-day pretty, darlings. Like a soothing cup of chamomile to calm your nerves and enrich your soul. Or maybe just pictures of a fierce bitch WERQing her shit. Sasha Pivovarova samples the fall Armani collection in front of the lens of Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott and looks sharp and chic while doing it. This campaign reminds us a little of fashion magazine ads from the ’80s, all lacquered and angular and colorful.

Put on a little Duran Duran and enjoy, kittens.

“GIRLS ON FILM!  Two minutes later!”  My very first musicn cassette as a child was a Duran Duran album.

Love almost all of the clothes.  The bag with the convex bottom in photo #4 particularly caught my eye.

Her bleached eyebrows are a little terrifying though.

The hair reminds me of Max Headroom.

The clothes look luxurious, though. Sharp. I like it.

Chris March hair trim alert: picture six.

I would wear the hell out of that quilted jacket in dusty rose. I think that’s the only quilted coat I’ve ever seen that I liked, excepting Jay’s awesome masterpiece from his PR runway show, which is an entirely different sort of quilting.

      • Anonymous

Uh oh. I had my eye on that coat…shall we rock-paper-scissors for it? ;P

        • Maria Rosenfire

          Thumb war!

    • MilaXX

Funny you should mention Duran Duran, my tickets just came in the mail today. These clothes are crying out for Tilda, Cate & Zoe to take them to the red carpet.

      • Anonymous

Oh, you lucky girl! I still love Duran Duran and I always will. *sigh*

        • Anonymous

          Same here.

      • http://johanne-strickland.blogspot.com/ Johanne

You said it! I personally want Tilda in the coat with the oversized collar, Cate in the dress just before that (they can fight over the grey, high-necked suit with the FABULOUS bag), and Zoe in any of the pieces I’m currently sceptical about (for instance, outfit no. 7), just to show me how it’s done.

      • Anonymous

14 year-old me used to cover her walls, ceiling-to-floor in Duran Duran posters. Good freaking times. :)

    • Tom Shea

Gets less gorge as you scroll down. Those first few pieces are breathtaking.

      • Anonymous

I agree.  Those first few photos are amazing, the others less so.  I’d still rather look at Armani’s lesser work than most other designers’ best work though.  His aesthetic just speaks to me.

OMG, this is beyond words. So so fierce!

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Luscious.  Have we seen SWINTON in these? Because if we haven’t, we should.

Oh, dearest one.  Go here and scroll down to the bottom and swoon and feel bad for the model here:  http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2011/07/planet-tilda-for-w-magazine.html

        • http://kittysdrawings.com Esz

Absolutely it is SWINTON ;-) I think they’ve tried to pay tribute to her somehow but I’m afraid that model is pulling the same expression in each pic.

    • Anonymous

      I just swooned!

Like a Patrick Nagel print come to life!  Thanks for the pretty.

Hungry Like A Wolf, my favorite Duran Duran number. Remember Iman in the video? Great stuff anyhooo, luv the spread real Glam.

    • Patricia Biswanger

Very 80s, but some great clothes.

    • http://wipgirl.wordpress.com/ kristel

I guess gape-mouthed is the thing to do these days?

      (The clothes do look great.)

    • Anonymous

      Gorgeous.

Also, does the fourth picture remind anyone else of Battlestar Galactica?

    • Anonymous

Beautiful clothes beautifully photographed.  And then one of the Kardasssssshians will wear one of these outfits and ruin it for me.

      • Anonymous

not their style–they couldn’t handle it!! love those suits….

      • Alyson Lamble

No way any of the Kardashian girls wear any of this stuff.  Much too classy and realistically, not suited to their collective body type.

    • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

Love it! Finally, is this the sign that the label is worth following again? 80’s Armani was the best Armani, after all!

    • Anonymous

      well that was kinda fab.

    • Anonymous

It looks like they really wanted Swinton for this, but couldn’t get her. The composition is very eye-catching, but I can’t with those bleached eyebrows.

That amazing structured bag in picture #4 – Must have this – NOW! And the dusty rose quilted jacket is awesome. Lovely pretty things.

    • Anonymous

Makes me think of Tilda Swinton.

      • Anonymous

And apparently lots of other people too. I wouldn’t be surprised if she was actually the inspiration for these clothes.

      Simply Irresistable

    • Anonymous

that’s some nice shit shown in great pix. good job. the third one from the bottom though: I hate the heart novelty button or brooch. completely kills the fierceness of the dress. hearts are for little girls and pajamas.

    • Anonymous

Love the bag, the vagina dress and the quilted coat. Good job all around, actually.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

Curious, which is the “vagina dress”?

      Love the bags.

    • Alyson Lamble

Not wild about the fur shrug or whatever it is, but I adore the rest of it, most especially the brown houndstooth suit.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1374511853 Sara Yungwirth

Anyone else notice how the model only uses two different (yet similar) facial expressions?
      She’s working the clothes though.

If I squint and imagine Swinton in these getups, it is WERQ! indeed.

    • Anonymous

      oh. I bet she’s hungry.

    • http://profiles.google.com/grandiva1968 e jerry powell

The reason everyone thinks that this screams Tilda Swinton is because Tilda wore that Armani high-collared wool and silk jacket in her shoot for W. And wore it much better, in my frivolous opinion…

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=167100010 Meghan Young

She gives great face until you start getting sick of her two front teeth. CLOSE YA LIPS FROM TIME TO TIME GIRL.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

Why is her mouth open in every shot?! Hate that.

    • Anonymous

The clothes and bags are fabulous!  And I love the 80s looks (I’m Gen X so I would LOL)–so sleek and put-together.

    • Anonymous

“Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand!”  Thanks for the flashback, TLo!

    • sonictofu

sharp and angular and fabulous!  thanks for this!

    • http://profiles.google.com/grandiva1968 e jerry powell

Perhaps the photos she took with her mouth closed weren’t that great.  You know how Tyra can be when she’s standing over the lightbox…

But seriously, if these bucktoothed things are the shots that were picked for the campaign, I’m not sure I want to see the ones that were passed over.

    • Anonymous

I looked at the pretty pictures before I read TLo’s editorial. I used to work as a fashion illustrator in the eighties, and these looks scream the eighties. As usual TLo hits the nail on the head!

    • Anonymous

Close your big red alien fish mouth and give me that first tote bag, stat.

    • Anonymous

It does have an 80s feel, without being a pastiche or trying too hard be retro. The first look really sets the tone of the campaign (it may be my favourite), I think, and I love the quilted coat and the high collared look that follows it. I would like the one with the hair-trim more if it didn’t have it on the sleeve – she appears to be in the midst of transforming into a werewolf.

(But since it is 2011, I have chosen to listen to Duran Duran’s most recent album – which, by the way, is fabulous.)

    • Anonymous

She looks too weird for my taste: vaguely alien, with Bugs Bunny overtones.  Doesn’t make me want to see any more of her *OR* buy the clothes.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DBGUQZXOUEZM27CIITFATIEELE Dave G

      HATE HATE her runway walk!!

These ads need to paperbag her face. So damn alien & severe for the clothing.

      WANT….all of it.

      Clothes pretty. Model fugly.

very helmut newton shoots spectacular collection.

      Saha Pivovarova is everywhere!

    • Anonymous

That diamond quilted coat is amazing! If I had the $$ that would be mine right now and I normally don’t care for quilted jackets.

      • Anonymous

I don’t think it is quilted. Looks more like a textured wool fabric to me. It is very nice.

        • Anonymous

Hmm, you may very well be right. Either way it’s lovely.

    • http://twitter.com/warontara Tara

Love the clothes- absolutely gorgeous! Not my style, so I can’t say I WANT any of them, but definitely want to see Tilda and Cate rock them all. The model…..yikes. If I saw only one of these shots by themselves, I would probably think she’s doing a fine job. But picture after picture of that same expression….oh, honey.

    • Anonymous

Not a fan of the shoot. Don’t care for the mono-face model and really don’t like the coloration, or miscoloration, of the whole thing.

But the clothes. Dear God, the clothes. Suits in pictures 4, 5, and 9?  I’m weeping with want. The coat too. Want the coat too.

    • Anonymous

Fierce clothing. They wouldn’t fit into my world, but they look very wearable for a certain percentage of the population.

    • Anonymous

I wonder what colour that lipstick is…

    • Judy_J

      Love the clothes.

I want to be the woman who can wear these clothes. Just for a day.

She has a Mila Jovovich thing in some of these pictures.

    • Shalini Trivedi

Is that model Cerri McQuillan from PR Season 7?

    • margaret meyers

In the photograph of the blak suit and hat I could not see Sasha’s front teeth, so that’s my favorite right there.
