In or Out: Christina Ricci in Michael Kors

Posted on August 09, 2011

Happy Holidays to all the Bitter Kittens! And the very best of New Year’s, darlings!

What? It’s August? Well, someone should’ve told Christina Ricci, then.

Christina Ricci attends the Disney ABC Televison Group’s ‘TCA 2001 Summer Press Tour’ in Beverly Hills in a Michael Kors smoke print dress. Shoes by Yves Saint Laurent.

YSL Trib Too High Heel Pump in Red Suede

To be fair, we probably wouldn’t be making this critique so strenuously if Anne Hathaway hadn’t just done the same thing. In the constant battle to remain stylish on the red carpet (and to avoid the dread of accidentally wearing something someone else was photographed wearing), a lot of gals show up looking like they just arrived here from 6 months ago. This isn’t the worst we’ve seen, but the whole look sure as hell doesn’t say “late summer” to either of us.

Further, we just don’t like this look. It’s all good on paper, but it’s not really working for Miss Christina at all. For one, it’s kind of severe. With the tight bodice, flared skirt and pin-straight hair, it’s giving her a bit of a bobblehead look. We’re not entirely sure what we would have done differently (aside from scrapping the whole look and starting over). We love the dress, but we don’t think the shoes really help the look and the hair and makeup are really harsh. Maybe a pair of sandals and some colorful bangles would have made it look a little lighter. Whatever the case, it’s just not working for us.

VOTE NOW!

IN! Fierce, chic, and sexy!

OUT! Robot Girl Christmas!

Olivia Wilde’s “Half-Breed” dress got itself an IN from the minions. T Lo is pleased.

Minnie Mouse shoes (in her signature color this time, even).

Ms. Christina here isn’t that old, but god damn does that makeup age her. She looks like she was going for the Sam Jones look and missed it.

      OUT.

Edit: I really am kind of sad about the out-ing on this one. I kinda love her.

I don’t hate it, but I’m not loving the proportions on her. Her torso looks ridiculously long. Also, the styling has left looking very Victoria Beckham-ish.

But I gotta add: Killer stems girl!

I got a VB vibe as well, which isn’t bad, but she could’ve lightened the tone up a bit with different hair/makeup/shoe choices.  But I think I quite like the dress.

V Beckham was my first reaction too, which trends negative to me.

I have to say I don;t really ike the dress. Maybe in real life it’s lovely but the ‘smoke’ pattern adds to the appearance of weird proportions.I love CR but this isn’t the look for her. Alas, OUT

The proportions on the dress make her body look really strange, IMO. Her torso looks weirdly long and because her waist is so tiny and long, her shoulders look REALLY broad in this. A very strange look.

      • Anonymous

Her torso IS weirdly long (I suffer the same problem), she just chose a dress that happens to accentuate that fact.

She doesn’t look awful, but I can’t give this look an in either.  Out.

Don’t like the hair or lip color; the rest of the makeup is fine. I see where you’re coming from on the Christmas-NYE party look, but I think the length of the dress and slevelessness is keeping it summer-appropriate. The dress fits her like a glove and looks gorgeous, shoes are decent, jewelry passable. Overall, I think this is an IN.

I hate the dress. It’s just too short and stiff looking for that kind of skirt, and the proportions look off or something. It just stands away from her body awkwardly. And it makes the bodice look way too tight instead of just form fitting. The color is ok though, and the shoes aren’t bad except I have a thing about suede in August. So OUT. Plus. Her hair. And her lips match her shoes.

I’m totally with you on the bodice looking way too tight and I also have a thing against suede in summer.  Suede is for fall/winter, my fine feathered friends.  I’ll also add that the makeup is too heavy.  Summer calls for lighter, fresher makeup!  I dig her and wish I could give this an IN.

I like the dress, except that it is just a tad bit too short.  Not loving the shoes, but that’s probably because the skirt is too short.  She also needs to tone down the lip color.  Otherwise, I think she looks pretty good.  I give her an IN.

I love that dress and think it looks great on her.  Agreed, the suede shoes are a wrong choice for August and I don’t really like her hair in this manner that she has been doing.  I love her with bangs and a little more volume.  All in all, though, I must give her a “squek under the wire” IN.

I’m inventing a new pet peeve: lipstick to match your shoes. Although I’m actually impressed by the feat– it’s as if she took a paint sample and had both made of the same color. But it’s the first thing I noticed and I can’t stop seeing it.

I agree with TLo– definitely too severe. The dress is great, but you don’t need to match a shiny dress with super shiny hair and a shiny face.

I say INish.  She needs a thin belt or something higher up on her waist to give the illusion of a shorter torso.  And if any face is made for bangs then it has to be Christina Ricci’s.

      • Anonymous

I’ve always thought she needed bangs too, but I’m really digging this sleek, shiny style with the razored ends. I think it complements her unusual beauty perfectly, but in a more grown up way.

    • Sweeney Agonistes

Hey, if you’re going to wear Minnie Mouse shoes, there are worse places than in front of a big wall that says DISNEY all over it. The look isn’t my favorite, but it’s passable.

In. It’s severe, perhaps too much so, but not so much that it pushes it over the line into OUT territory. I don’t necessarily see it as a midwinter dress – but I agree that it doesn’t say late summer either.

Wow. I think I’m in the minority here, but I think the dress totally deforms her body proportions. I think it looks awful. Plus, it looks like Catwoman’s party dress. This is so OUT for me.

I like the dress and the shoes, it’s the hair and the make up that’s throwing this off for me. There’s nothing young or summer about either of those whatsoever, and it really helps push the look more towards that christmas aesthetic that you’re talking about. But she has a great body that looks great in the dress, she’s werquing the shit outta her pose and there’s nothing “matchy-matchy” about this. IN I SAY

I love the color, shape and sheen of the dress.  It’s unusual and fresh, and gets major points for having two shoulders and no origami… sleek and cute and a little tough, not unlike miss Christina herself.  I’m not on board with the shoes, but IN nonetheless.

I think all the celebs are rocking holiday looks because its so g-d hot out they need to do something to get their minds off of the oppressive heat.  LOVE the shoes, love that the dress is fabulous AND has pockets (but get your hands out of them, girl!), love the hair and makeup. Robot Christmas is IN, bitches!

God, her boobs. They are being strangled. I have to chestbind for cosplay and it is not fun and I know mine are always pissed off about the experience, but there’s really no reason she needs to mash hers down so badly just to wear a dress.

The shoes match her lipstick, and that’s a strange silhouette on the dress. I hate her make up, the hair adds nothing, her hands are in pockets – why are there pocket on this dress? – and the bracelet says St. Patrick’s Day.

On the other hand, I like the shoes and the dress isn’t horrible. At a distance, it’s passable. In the distance/full-body photos she looks chic, a little to much Posh Spice wannabe, but good. The close-ups are scary.

I want to say in because she’s really trying here and I’ve given so many outs lately, but… OUT. Sorry. She lost it in the details.

Mmm…ever since she lost a bunch of weight a number of years back, I’ve thought she pretty much always looks like a bobblehead.  Now, a really cute one, but a lollipop, for sure.  This particular look is just too shiny for me, even though she is terribly cute.  A mild out.

It’s a cute dress, but the proportions are off. The skirt needs to be longer.  The shoes have a similar problem.  The extreme heaviness of the front with the extremely slim heel just looks odd.

And her maquillage is way overdone.

      Out.

I actually love this dress and think she’s workin’ it.  If she wanted to wear red shoes, however, at least do a sandal.  And I agree about the hair.  The best hairstyle CR ever had was the bangs, an incredibly flattering look for her.  I’m sorry she grew them out.

Please don’t let matching your shoes to your lipstick become a thing.

I mostly like it. The hair needed to be fluffier and the silhouette is a touch off, but I love the color, the shoes and the charm bracelet, although I will admit to having red pumps and charm bracelets of my own… I think the length and lack of sleeves make it fine for summer — it’s not like we all need to go organdy and cotton and, frankly, Ms. Ricci has never been too much of a floral print sundress type.
Also, suede only for fall and winter? Winter is usually wet. We do know what the wet does to the suede, no? I’ve lost shoes I loved that way….

Change the shoes and add some flirty jewelry, and it could have worked.  Red velvet is not a summer shoe, honey!

I usually don’t vote, but I am disturbed by the way the trend is going, so  – OUT! But only on a few technicalities. Seasonality concerns, hate platforms, skirt too short, hate hair, shiny makeup. Tweak it a little and she’s good to go 12/31/11.

    • Anonymous

Out. The bodice is awfully tight (and Christina Ricci is TINY! It’s not like it needs to be!) and in combination with the cut of the skirt it’s making her proportions look… weird. It’s not disastrous, but she ought to be able to do better.

    • Anonymous

The dress is okay. I like the smoke print on Leila Shams dress http://leilashams.com/leilashamsstore.html?bpid=641 better.  This particular look doesn’t strike me as too off season, but she is way too tan, do you think the Duchess suggested a harsh bronze when he lent her the dress? in. i guess, but Christina you can do so much better.

      • Anonymous

If she was taking makeup advice from the Duchess, she’d be far more orange.

    • Anonymous

Her pose gives the impression that her head is not centered on her body. The dress is cute but the length of the top is out of proportion to the skirt. The shoes are just too overpowering for her size. OUT

IN! She looks so cool and in charge! I love it!

    • Anonymous

If a dress made my waist look so tiny, I’d never take it off!

    • Anonymous

I like the dress and overall thin she looks good.  (although the pose is off)   I think that in general I don’t really love super high heels with very short dresses.

    • Anonymous

IN!  I think she looks great and better than she has looked in a while.  Outfit does look early fall but I hate summer clothes to begin with.  I guess it comes from living in Florida and beeing feed up with the Palm Beach and Miami looks.

    • http://twitter.com/kmc1138 Kathleen Coyle

I think the only thing that causes the bobble head effect on her is the fact that she lost a liiiiitle too much weight.  I need some curves back.  And sadly, I wholeheartedly disagree with you.  Love it.  Eyes are maybe a little to heavy for such a bright lip, but I love that lip color.  And I say “feh” to seasonal dictation of style.  So a resounding “in”!

    • Anonymous

OUT. Lollipop head is never a good look.

    • Anonymous

It’s the hairstyle. I can’t wait until this trend is done with; there aren’t a lot of women who look good like this; it’s a style for women with fistfulls of hair and most of us have a good spaghetti-serving on a good day, and too many decide to go ahead and  sport the look because it’s trendy and end up looking like the little old ladies with their see-through hair. If she’d gone with a strappy sandle and a Helen-Mirrin blow-out with bangs…she’d look adorable.

The shoes – yuck. They look hella cheap. I don’t understand why YSL is simply reproducing drag queen platforms and getting away with it? And they’re not the only ones – what’s with the great platform movement of the early 2010s?

Are you kidding?  She’s working it!  I think the dress looks really great on her, and I like the lipstick.  She’s always going to be fighting against her forehead, and the hairstyle’s not doing her any favors.  But that and the shoes are minor quibbles.  IN.

In. I love the concept, I just hate that mickey mouse pump. That dress makes her legs look fantastic, and I really love it when women actually look athletic and healthy, as opposed to anorexic and/or anemic. The dress could have used about 2-3 mm more on the hemline, but overall I say she done herself good.

        And . . . .

Apparently I’m in a tiny minority, but I just don’t understand the very-very short hemlines:  (1) It’s a challenge to manage the proportion elements — and most stylists seem barely able to cope as it is;  and (2) I’ll say it again … a person CANNOT MOVE – bend, reach out, reach up, give a hug, even sit – in a skirt like this without worrying a little about exposure.  That’s no way to enjoy an evening, ladies!

    • Anonymous

Well she certainly has a bangin’ body in this dress. But something about the whole thing gives off a “Posh” vibe (the woman, not the adjective).

    • Anonymous

Sandals would have helped it a ton. And bangs, she has a five head and thin wispy hair which doesn’t give her many options hair wise.

Still, A solid in.  Love the shoes.

    • Anonymous

Yes it’s not very summery, but i like a lot it. IN.

    • Anonymous

OUT. The tightness of the bodice and high cut on the shoes is making her look like she has a loooooong torso and short little legs. At least Minnie Mouse shoes makes sense at a Disney event. I wish Katy Perry were there to walk around in a ruffle polka dot mini, huge yellow pumps, a Minnie Pearl hat, and nothing but illusion netting on top.

While we are at wishing, I wish Christina would re-gain a little of the weight she had when she was younger. She has the kind of face and figure that needs a little softness to look its best.

    • Christina Brennan

I like this look a lot.  It’s not perfect- I agree that it’s a bit dark and heavy for a summer dress- but still an IN for me.  She looks great in it.

    • Anonymous

I don’t usually pipe in on these, but I’m in disagreement.  She IS a tiny little bobblehead, so no demerits for that, the makeup isn’t quite perfect, but she’s working that dress, so IN.

    • Anonymous

It’s so tight on the top and she’s so skinny that it looks like she can’t breathe. Seems like a lot of people like the look but it’s slightly (and I emphasize slightly) disturbing to me because of this.

    • Anonymous

Looks like she was frying chicken and just let the grease splatter all over her dress. That’s just the fabric right? The way it reflects or whatever? I hate that. So sick of platform shoes.

IN. I’m not huge on the platform pumps (never am) nor the bright red lipstick (again, not a fan) but I still think she looks fierce and awesome.

    • Sara__B

IN! She does look fierce, chic, and sexy, but not perfect. Her hair IS too straight and her lipstick IS too harsh, but IN anyway. (And of course she looks like a bobblehead — her waist size isn’t much bigger than her hat size!)

    • Mary McClelland

Can I vote In and Out? Probably not.  I like the dress in theory.  I like the color of the shoes.  I like the grey dress mixed with the bright poppy red shoes.  I just think the dress, because it’s so tight, looks like a wetsuit.  A shark colored wetsuit. And it also kind of looks like a ballet costume because of the skirt.  My immediate reaction was IN! But then I realized, it kind of didn’t fit.  And it is too short.  If it were a skosh bigger in the bodice/waist area and a skosh longer and maybe the shoes were more summer appropriate then I would say IN.

    • Anonymous

    • http://twitter.com/CheriCPat Cheri Patrick

In.  The dress is cute, it’s something different than boring black, the shoes are NOT NUDE, the hair is right.  The lips that match the shoes aren’t enough to make it an out.  And shame on you for calling her on the bobble-head look – that is how she looks naturally!  She has a large, heart-shaped face, and the width and high forehead make it look disproportionate to her tiny body.  I don’t think there is anything she can do to NOT look like a bobble-head, so like SJP’s hands, it’s not right to point it out as a flaw.

    • http://twitter.com/Littlegrr Mary Nau

      So very IN.

      I think it’s smoking hot!  Huh>??

    • Anonymous

Out. My reasoning isn’t going to be very lucid, but it’s very clear to me:
She needed an observer with a cool head and stringent gaze to say “no.”  She still can wear a dress like this because she’s worked to keep a tight, lean, body. She shouldn’t be wearing *this* dress because it makes her look as if all she is, is a tight, lean, body. The promise of hot monkey sex and sharp, pointy elbows and knees overwhelms any charm or grace.

i don’t understand why someone doesn’t have an intervention with her hair!  she’s really beautiful, but it’s hard to see that as you’re left dealing with her enormous forehead.  cover that up, girl!  bangs are your look.

IN, barely. I actually like this oddly proportioned dress even though summer isn’t the right season for it. The styling is bad and those shoes aren’t working here one little bit. Yeah, it doesn’t quite say “August” but she’s exposing her arms and legs in a cute minidress. Strappy, glittery high-heeled sandals would have been a better way to go than suede platform pumps, but she looks cute and pulled together and didn’t overdo the jewelry. Overall, I’d say it’s “in.”
