WERQ: Hailee Steinfeld in Miu Miu

Posted on July 21, 2011

BREAKING: New face of Miu Miu goes out in Miu Miu. We’ll bring you the developments as they occur.

Hailee Steinfeld attends MIU MIU presents Lucrecia Martel’s ‘Muta’ in Beverly Hills, California in a Miu Miu dress paired with a Prada clutch and Miu Miu shoes.

Okay, color us confused. Whoever makes the creative decisions at Miu Miu: WHY did you have her dressed up in that grandma frock for the ads when you could have made her look cute and (relatively) fresh by putting her in this?

Not that this look is without any issues. It’s very cute, but it still comes off a bit mature for a teenager. It’s all just a little too put-together for someone so young. Let’s face it: not only could a woman twice her age work this look; a woman THREE TIMES her age could pull it off. A little more fun with the accessories, please. We’re pretty sure Prada could have sent over something with a little color or whimsy to it. Also, jewelry.

Still, despite the maturity of it – and the fact that it’s colorless from tip to toe – we think she looks adorable and stylish here. She gets a a lower-case “werq” from us. It’s stylish, but it looks like it was put together by someone with absolutely no thought as to who was wearing it. In other words, this would have been just as appropriate on Jennifer Aniston and, with some sleeves, Helen Mirren.

    I think she looks adorable.

    • Anonymous

      I agree!

  • Grace Ritt

I can’t get over how cute and stylish she is all the time. I think she tries to look grown-up a lot, to get away from being compared to Miley Cyrus or something, but it works on her.

  • http://twitter.com/annie_wonder Annie

Agreed TLo – I could wear this and I am twice her age. But then again, I wouldn’t look as cute and lovely as her. Blah, this post has depressed me now. *storms off to eat feelings*

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_B53PQYXSJR4YJBV3J6BWYSICRQ Jamie

love it – though too mature.  I’d be happy to take it off her hands.

  • Anonymous

I do not take my style tips from children, although I often admire their innate chic.

    • Tamara Hogan

      Sing it.

    Meh. Miu Miu moo moo.

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

I think it’s adorable and that beaded collar reminds me of the Peter Pan collars from my private school uniform, which makes it even more age-appropriate in my mind.

  • Liana Brooks

It looks like something Jackie O would have worn with a pillbox hate. It’s too old for her and I can’t imagine anyone under the age of 60 wearing this.

  • http://parisiennelauren.wordpress.com/ Lauren

Love the shoes…would love them even more in color.

  • Anonymous

I think the dress works for her with the Peter Pan collar. It’s the accessories that send this into “mature woman” territory. The stylist should have put her into some ballet flats or fun sandals and given her a younger-looking clutch.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

TLo, I think you’re too obsessed with being age appropriate. There are certain styles, lots of them, that are classic and look beautiful on everyone, and hey — that’s ok. This is one of them. My teenage daughters and I do a lot of inter-closet borrowing and none of us is trying to be what we’re not. It either looks great or it doesn’t. And yes, I think Hailee looks terrific here and the whimsy you’re seeking is in the beaded collar.

    • Anonymous

      Completely agree.  LURVE the shoes!

    • Anonymous

I also think maybe Hailee’s personal style may actually be a bit older than she is. If she has grown-up taste, why shouldn’t she be allowed to dress that way? I would have KILLED to be able to do that when I was younger. Or for that matter, even now. (Budget sad face.)

Then again, I will always leap to defend her because she bears an uncanny resemblance to the way I looked when I was a little younger than her (just in the face. I was not as tall or as thin or as fabulous).

  • Anonymous

I think she looks adorable.  The only real issue I have with her look is the manicure.

    • Anonymous

Why do you have an issue with a basic French manicure?  Just curious, no hostility intended.

      • Anonymous

I think it’s just a matter of personal taste, I just never liked the look of a french manicure.  I like pale, neutral nails, but I think a single color is much prettier.

        • Anonymous

I agree. French was in style years ago – but now I think it just looks trailer-park. Better to go with a pale, neutral nail.

  • Anonymous

Adorable! I love that they don’t over-pluck her eyebrows yet. They should become her trademark.

  • Anonymous

Why did they make this 14 year old look like somebody’s mother going lunching with friends? No.  This would look lovely on somebody 10 years older.  On her it looks like she’s playing dress up.  Bad color too.

  • MilaXX

Agreed, she looks cute here, but this look is pretty universal. I’m not sure why they wouldn’t go a bit more wacky with a spokesperson this young, but I’ve long learned the fashion world makes no sense.

She gets a werq cus she dressed like my grandmother?? Really TLo???

  • Anonymous

Agree that it’s too old for her.  I do particularly like those shoes though.  The cut of the peep toe looks like it would me more comfortable than your average peep toe.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lauren-Jean-St-Martin/504251897 Lauren Jean St. Martin

Did you boys just tell Helen Mirren to put on sleeves? Better hope she doesn’t hear about it!

  • Judy_J

I think she looks cute.  This dress kind of reminds me of something a teenage girl would have worn for a dressy event in the 1960′s.

    • Anonymous

True, but it would have been a fair bit shorter, which is what I think this dress should have been.  If it went up a couple of inches it would look a lot younger.

      • Anonymous

And since it’s not body-hugging, it would still look cute and age appropriate.

  • Anonymous

Don’t look at me; I have no idea either.

    Although…those shoes are pretty hot.

  • Anonymous

To me, the standout style elements of this dress are a) the collar and b) the color.  I don’t like the boxy, no-waist cut.  I like the front of the shoes but SAVE US from clunky, asymmetric heels–they look awful.  She’s very cute but I think it’s DESPITE the style rather than because of it…..just innate cute-ness coming through.  If that’s what buys one a “lower case werq”, then well done.  Of course there *is* the larger question of having a middle school level girl selling adult designer clothes, but we’ll leave that for a different discussion!  :-)

  • Anonymous

    Cute.

But this is the third one we’ve seen, right? A teenager as the new face of a major line. I fear the next one will be a 10 year old as the new face of Herve Leger.

  • Kathy MacLeod

TLo, can you cover the rest of this red carpet event?

  • Anonymous

She looks cute, but a bit too sedate. A little more color or oomph in her shoes and bag would have made this more youthful looking. Glad she doesn’t dress like a slut, though.

  • http://www.myblackfriendsays.com myblackfriendsays

    I love the clutch.

  • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

When I was young, there was a concept of “preppy” for girls: they literally wore their mother’s college clothes to college (this meant that your mother had gone to college, so you came from a somewhat wealthy family, and that she and her mother had  invested in clothes that still had wear in them after 4 years, and they made sure the family got the wear out of them). Somehow this dress reminds me of that concept. Or maybe Junior League? She is too young to be actually preppy or junior league, but she’s an actress so she pulls it off. But is it worth pulling off?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6YKBGSJPVAK3AG44ASGX5UMMB4 Em Web

I think this is so perfect for her age, figure…everything

  • Anonymous

I think that if the designers muse is still on similac, then they should design clothing appropriate for that demographic.

  • http://twitter.com/A_SmallFry AC

She looks cute but I dunno if she’s “werq”-worthy. The shoes are hot.

  • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

I was curious about the event so I googled around and found that it is celebrating this film: http://www.miumiu.com/en/wtales/2/film
which lists models instead of actresses and presumably features Miu Miu clothing. NOT a film in which Ms. Steinfeld would have a part.

Am I the only one who hasn’t figured out what WERQ stands for?

    • MilaXX

There was a post a few months back where the acronym was invented. Do a search on the site and it should pull it up.

    • Anonymous

      No. I’ve been wondering also.

I started to comment about how this look is a bit too mature for her, and then I remembered to be grateful that young teenage girls have someone other than the Taylor Momsens of the world to look at. Keep it up Haylee.

    • Anonymous

You’re so right. It is refreshing to see a young starlet who never looks trashy or cheap.

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

It is a tad mature for her, but it’s a fabulous look, nevertheless.  Love the shoes.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3KCDEX4FOTCFHZP6WLKSOOKUVM Danielle

I disagree – apparently with everyone.  I don’t like any of it.

I cannot get past the colour to see anything else here. It’s just dreadful. How old is she again?

I find it hard to evaluate a 15 or 16 year old. Seems mean. She should just have fun and enjoy.

I applaud the sentiment but I am not so restrained.

  • Amanda in Austin

    I want those shoes NOW.

  • Anonymous

She looks great,i just thought that collar shud have been detail exposing the top part like ordinary dresses.

  • Anonymous

I’m confused. I thought the WERQ posts were supposed to be someone who usually gets it wrong, but finally gets it right. The last few WERQ posts don’t seem like they fit that mold. Not saying that Hailee doesn’t look adorable here, or that the others who were in the last few WERQ posts didn’t look put together, but they also didn’t all have a bad track record.

    • Anonymous

That’s how it was described in the first “WERQ” post http://www.tomandlorenzo.com/2011/02/w-e-r-q-christina-hendricks-2.html

  • Anonymous

I do like the dress, but I think messier, less polished hair would have made this feel fresher. Maybe a messy ponytail or something. I’m also not crazy about the shoes with the dress, though I can’t quite pinpoint why…Maybe they’re just too mature in combination with that dress, and as TLo said, she looks too put together for her age. I think some little silvery flats would have looked adorable…

  • Anonymous

I love this kid! Did I mention that I love this kid?

The shape of those shoes is kick-ass!  Too bad they’re nude.

    dull

  • http://profiles.google.com/yhawkins13 Yolanda Hawkins

Another pale, colorless dress that Duchess Cathy can add to her collection and it would look mature on her and she is 15 years older than Hailee.  I do love Hailee, but I agree these clothes and the styling are too mature for a girl of 15.

    • Anonymous

I think the very young can get away with mature looks that would incredibly age a 30-year old.

  • Anonymous

helen mirren don’t need no stinkin sleeves.  she looks better in a bikini than i do (at 27).

  • http://twitter.com/lauralexis Laura

Love the dress, hate the shoes – I can’t think of what would work, but the shoes, to me, are screaming TOO MATURE, far more than the dress itself.

    So cute!

  • http://profiles.google.com/ballinger.jl Jessica Ballinger

Love the heel shape on those shoes.

I’m still befuddled at the marketing decision here.
Miu Miu is trying to sell clothes to grown women.
So why do they put the face of a 13 YO on their ad campaign?
If I was of a demographic that was buying a wardrobe of designer clothes every season, I’d probably cross them right off my list.
I don’t want to wear clothes that look right on a 13 YO.

  • Anonymous

I love her for not going around looking like a little ho and for always keeping it classy.  But after getting it right all through awards season, I think her recent outings have mostly been off.  Not disastrous, but just too mature and boring for her.  This look isn’t bad but it certainly doesn’t deserve a WERQ.  And yes, the manicure is tacky.  At least she’s not sporting the Palm Springs-divorcee red toenails this time.

  • http://twitter.com/annmartina Ann Harste

    Love the shoes

  • Anonymous

Gawd, I hate that color! the color of, dare I say it, puke.
The collar is adorable, the pin tucks are an attractive element, the purse and shoes are too safe and boring, though the shoes are growing on me, and the dress ought to be a tiny bit shorter on such a lovely, young, fresh-faced girl. But her confident stance and smile rescue it. OK, werq, I guess.

    Brushes self off…

  • http://twitter.com/pag_baj Paige Boerman

    Cute, but hate the shoes.

  • Anonymous

She looks very cute, but I wholeheartedly agree with you regarding the accessories. I’d like to see her wearing some fun, youthful, flirty shoes rather than these matronly clunkers. Jewelry would be nice too. Even with all my bitching I still think she looks awfully cute.

It is a very modest dress, but I think there is room in every wardrobe and on every red carpet for a pretty, modest dress.  Why not?

I like the shoes way more than they deserve. The dress is too old for her unless she’s accompanying her great-grandmother to tea & a matinee of some warm-weather equivalent of The Nutcracker – traditional stomping grounds of over-dressed little children being taken to an expensive cultural treat (which only a small percentage enjoy) by an older relative.

  • http://twitter.com/rgmx Mercy

    in!  adorable!

In complete agreement with the WERQ assessment.  I even thought she looked cute in the granny clothes.

Aw… Helen Mirren can definitely rock it without sleeves.

I just see Nancy Reagan at lunch in this.

Add a cardigan and a woman 5 or 6 times her age could pull that one off. I don’t get the appeal of a little girl wandering around dressing like Betty Ford.

  • sweetlilvoice

Hate it, she is such a young girl why is she being dressed like this? Like the shoes though.

  • Anonymous

The material looks hideously cheap, and is such an ugly color.

  • Robert Sanchez

Cute, but yeah, she’s looking a lot older than she needs to. Just taking her hair down would have helped a lot.

  • Anonymous

She kinda looks like Bjork, no? Cute chick.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3NXBVKLOMNGCAVCVXOVWDGD3SE Marissa

I think she looks very cute! She’s covered up but doesn’t look childish.

I still don’t care for this on her. It looks just like a dress I wore in my sister-in-law’s wedding when I was manning the guest registry. I felt silly, like I was trapped between being a kid (I was dating the much-younger brother) and adult (I got married myself soon afterward). She looks trapped in the same way—not quite an adult, and knows too much to be a kid. Uncomfortable, is the word I would use.

I like how she’s covered to the neck. It’s nice and modest for a girl her age, but not prissy. But you’re right, she still looks a little young for the look.

My heart skipped a beat!  Why are those darts off around the collar?!    One can only surmise it is because she is leaning slightly and if she were to stand up straight, they would correct themselves.
