Planet Tilda for W Magazine

Posted on July 11, 2011

Oh, Tilda. You magical, spectacular, androgynous robot creature. What would the world be without the weird ones, the paradigm-shifters, the men and women who fell to earth, we ask you? This bitch takes the definition of “fierce,” wrestles it to the ground, and says quietly in its ear, “Let’s do this my way.”

Praise be. Bow down, fuckers.

Salvatore Ferragamo’s silk velvet tuxedo jacket and silk blouse; Acne’s silk velvet pants with belt. Patricia Underwood for Chris Benz hat, Sermoneta gloves.

Tilda Swinton featured in the August 2011 issue of W Magazine
Photographed by Tim Walker
Styled by Jacob Kjeldgaard; hair by Malcolm Edwards; makeup by Sam Bryant.

From the accompanying interview:

“I would imagine that the female characters in most Hollywood films are too generic for you. You seem to be attracted to complex and often very dark personalities. Do you have to like a character to play her?
I have to feel compassion. And I have to be able to imagine myself in the situation. I can imagine myself as the mother of a scary son who looks at you with hatred. It’s not about liking the person, but it is about understanding. The Greeks speak about the violence of the real. I want to get at something real.”

Blumarine’s wool coat and dress; Stella McCartney’s fleece wool and cashmere turtleneck; Tommy Hilfiger’s silk pants; J.W. Anderson’s cashmere skirt. Patricia Underwood for Chris Benz hat, Comme des Garçons belt, Maison Martin Margiela gloves, Rick Owens boots.

Céline’s cotton turtleneck.

Acne’s wool jacket; Akris’s wool dress; Tommy Hilfiger’s silk pants. LaCrasia gloves.

Chloé’s leather jacket; Maison Martin Margiela’s polyurethane and polyester dress; Jil Sander’s cashmere and silk hooded turtleneck. Maison Martin Margiela gloves, Rick Owens boots.

Zero + Maria Cornejo’s llama hair coat; Hugo Boss’s cotton turtleneck; John Rocha’s silk pants; Gucci’s silk chiffon dress. Eres cap, Rick Owens boots.

Comme des Garçons’s wool jacket; Hugo Boss’s cotton and polyester shirt; Acne’s polyester skirt. Sermoneta gloves, Agent Provocateur hosiery, Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci shoes.

VPL’s latex coat and dress; National Theatre Costume Hire Store’s bodysuit. Maison Martin Margiela boots.

Chanel’s stretch cotton denim jumpsuit; Hussein Chalayan’s wool tunic. Rick Owens boots.

Hermès’s felted wool flannel dress. Stephen Jones swim cap, Hermès gloves, Rick Owens boots.

Yves Saint Laurent’s wool sweater and silk crepe de chine blouse. Sermoneta gloves.

Haider Ackermann’s wool caftan with silk lapels and wool pants; Ralph Lauren Black Label’s cashmere sweater. Haider Ackermann belt, Burberry shoes.

Stella McCartney’s wool, polyamide, and elastane jacket; twill and rayon blouse; and rayon pants; National Theatre Costume Hire Store’s bodysuit. Sermoneta gloves.

Giorgio Armani’s wool and silk jacket. Sermoneta gloves.

your cargo shorts and 7 yr old t-shirt spray tan stained and busted flip flops is BALLS.  How very dare you.

    • http://profiles.google.com/paigemano Paige Mano

I’ve always enjoyed her weirdness and androgyny. That said, the first picture makes her look like the Wicked Witch of the West.

      • margaret meyers

No, she’s the well-dressed Weird Sister from Macbeth.

      • Anonymous

I thought that too, the second I saw it!

      • Anonymous

I about crapped myself with terror on that third picture. Those EYES.

    • Anonymous

Weird, in the most fabulous way possible.

      • Anonymous

        My sentiments exactly. So fabulous.

    • Anonymous

I’m speechless. These photos are stunning.

    • Julie Woodson

      Otherworldly!

The photo of her in the white jacket reminds me a lot of David Byrne in Stop Making Sense.

      • Anonymous

i though the same thing- the big suit.  i saw an interview once in magazine with david byrne and he said he had first had the idea in a bar, and they showed his sketch on a cocktail napkin.  a similar kind of creativity.

i bow down with much happiness.

      Gorgeous editorial!

      Love it. Gaga, take note.

      • Shawn Hill

Who else could surpass Gaga? Many try, Tilda sails miles above!

Wow. Spectacular. Especially that last photo.

This makes me think they should do a Star Trek movie or like a sci fi movie where Swinton plays all the parts and only wears couture.

      • Anonymous

I would be in line right behind you for tickets to the opening night of THAT!  We’ve never had her in Sci Fi before.  Its past time.

        • Anonymous

She did play Archangel Gabriel as an insane androgyne, in “Constantine.”

          • Anonymous

Never saw Constantine from a massive dislike of Keanu Reeves.  But I may have to check it out now.  Thanks!

            • Anonymous

              It’s worth it for Tilda.

            • http://profiles.google.com/h.e.waddell Heather Waddell

Imagine it as a comedy. It makes the whole thing a lot more fun. And Tilda makes the whole thing worth the trip.

No, but we had her in “Orlando”

Thought of a couple other SF-y things, which were obscure indie art films I saw only because I lived in Seattle when they came out, and *everything* gets shown in Seattle, somehow.

“Conceiving Ada” (1997) – she’s Ada, daughter of Lord Byron and inventor of the first computer language, who is “contacted” by a female 21st-century computer scientist. The use of CGI settings is advanced for its day.

“Possible Worlds” (2000) which I did not see, but sounds like SF, dealing with a man who lives in parallel worlds, all or most of them with Tilda.

“Teknolust” (2002) — Tilda is a gawky genetic scientist who clones herself into 3 gorgeous Tildas, who live on sperm tea (I kid you not).  Guess how they collect their meals.  Deeply weird and I can’t remember how it ends, but hey!  Four Tildas!

          • Anonymous

Wow all of those sounds really intriguing.  I’m gonna have to start nosing around for them and see if I can dig em up.
Technolust sounds the most wack of them all, and therefor the best suited for out spaced up Tilda!

SWINTON would make an awesome Borg queen! (I know they’re not supposed to be found until centuries later, but the last Star Trek movie space-time continufucked everything so anything’s possible now!)

        • Anonymous

          “continufucked.”  Must steal.  Thank you.

      • Anonymous

Megan, clearly the unborn fawns nominate you for this year’s ‘genius award.’ I think the “playing all the parts” sounds even better than the couture.

    • Anonymous

I’m SHAKING with awe here.  Not only is this an incredibly eerily beautiful and compelling human being, but the photography is some of the most jaw dropping stuff I’ve sen in ages.  Some of these images remind me of iconic Avedon and Penn style shots from the mid century.  And then the clothes themselves are equally stunning.  Sure a lot of it is not wearable by us normal humans but WTF cares?  Tilda exists to bring it for us!

    • Anonymous

Oh My Gosh, it’s just so damn goodI Her stylist is absolutely EVERYTHING and she is working it like rent is past due!

      • margaret meyers

        And it’s so fresh.

        • Anonymous

          Totally agree!

    • margaret meyers

What a great fashion parade.  Swinton is clearly all in with the project and she is what makes it fabulous.  Yeah, the clothes, the styling, the photography — they’re all cool.  But what makes this unbelievable is Swinton.  She exceeds, always.

    • Anonymous

OH.MY.GOD. Where does she come from?!
What a pleasure it must be for the photographers, stylists and editors to get to work with someone who does their work so much justice and takes it SEVERAL steps fowards!
the images are truly, breathtakingly beautiful

What a daring, perfect creature. I am a huge fan of Meryl Streep but the talent and balls that Tilda continues to demonstrate just knock my socks off. She is in a class by herself. How can you look at any standard runway/red carpet with awe after seeing the bold Tilda kick ass, as she does here. This woman defies Hollywood’s idea of woman. Hell, she defies my sense of her.

She reminds me of one of the evil Borgs from Star Trek with her second picture. This is where art and fashion collide, especially in the last picture. There’s so many beautiful things in this shoot..so many stories it could tell. To me, she tells the story of a futuristic scientist, scoping out post-apocalyptic America for life, only to find she is alone in the world..her eyes tell me a thousand possibilities..

A-f’ing-MAZING. thank you for bringing it to me, now that i can no longer afford, nor even really want, fashion magazines.

& oh, those boots, all of them. & the latex, all of it. wow.

The first words to mind were BAM! and Fabulous! Love the third last and final pictures.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sauchih Sau-Chih Feng

My god, she really does remind me of David Bowie in a lot of these pictures. Your reference to the movie The Man Who Fell to Earth is entirely appropos for this editorial.

    • http://twitter.com/verascity Vera Sticker

I think this is the best editorial she’s ever done. I would hang some of these on my wall.

    • http://twitter.com/karenrubyleo Karen

stunning, no one else could pull this off.

Spectacular, Spectacular. I love, love love all these looks!
You can create a story about each of these “characters” and they ARE Characters.

reminds me so much of annie lennox X 100.

I’m quite proud my wee country has produced two such spectacular women.

        • margaret meyers

That gaunt, restrained look that refuses to be just “beautiful” is powerful.

    • narita_rayna

      Fierce! FIERCE!!!!!!!

    • Anonymous

Holy shit.  I don’t even know what to say.  Freaky and awesome.

    • Tamara Hogan

I want to live on Planet Tilda.

    • Anonymous

Fabulous.  She’s just a one of a kind.  The Thin White Duchess.

    • Anonymous

Gosh she’s entertaining. Much prefer her with a ‘human face’ unencumbered by plastic framing or kabuki-esque whiteface, but those who Fell to Earth march to their own beat. (Though she makes the Bowie character seem downright human and puppy-like in comparison, in some of these.)

I do fall into the Wicked Witch of the West camp re that first photo in the fog, but only if Margaret Hamilton’s character had a ton of money and arrived in a limo, with discreet entourage. No tatty brooms or scruffy flying monkeys.

Kudos to Tim Walker, Jacob Kjeldgaard, Malcolm Edwards, and Sam Bryant for not messing with who she is.

      Yes, yes YAAAAAS!

    • http://twitter.com/merrigator merrigator

She is the most exciting actress today.  Period.  Cate Blanchett is magnetic and enchanting but, alas, Tilda is so fierce she’s a downright thrill ride!

    • Anonymous

Tilda Swinton and Tim Walker, now there’s a collaboration that was meant to be! Fabulous.

I wonder where it was shot. At first I wondered if it was near her home as there’s miles of coastline there, but it’s generally sandier than that.

      • margaret meyers

You can tell they were really all working together.  A lot of Sinton’s art is about collabortaion, and certainly acting is built on working together. She isn’t just a model trying to make clothes look beautiful, she’s making them exciting.

    • oohsparkley!

She is the freakiest freak from Freaktopia.  Love it!

    • up with pod people

      OH amazing

    • Anonymous

I’m blown away. That’s what an editorial should look like.

    • Anonymous

Tilda “takes the definition of ‘fierce,’ wrestles it to the ground, and says quietly in its ear, ‘Let’s do this my way.’”

It doesn’t get any better than that–both the TLo description and Tilda herself. She IS fashion, and all those Hollywood skank-wear wearers just pale to nothing in comparison.

      This is a great editorial.

She’s an amazing creature. We’re just so lucky she chose our planet!

The seventh photo makes me think that she should be in a remake of Victor/Victoria

    • Anonymous

Fabulous!  What an editorial!  She looks like she was having a blast too–I know I would have.  I love the unsual and extrordinary.

    • Anonymous

I tell you what, bitter kittens, I’m going to go buy that freaking magazine, that’s how much I love this spread.

    • Anonymous

Someone needs to cast her in a David Bowie bio-pic.

    • Shawn Hill

Is she in Iceland? She can be my Wicked Witch any time.

    • Anonymous

The most spectacular editorial I’ve seen in eons and ages.  Perfection.  And TS has some GAMS!

    • Anonymous

These strike me as less about fashion and more about serious art.  These are seriously arty.  Beautiful.  Creepy, but beautiful.

      BEYOND INCREDIBLE!

I have to buy this issue. Have to.

She makes Gaga look like a McDonald’s hamburger.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Juline-Débaul/100002426617563 Juline Débaul

THIS is how you do it! I think THIS is what Lady Gaga has been trying to do all along; she just never had the taste for it, and Tilda beat her to it!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=12500056 Joseph Lamour

What I wouldn’t do to see video of this woman modeling. It must be fascinating.

    • Anonymous

      What Gaga will never be.

    • Anonymous

This bitch takes the definition of “fierce,” wrestles it to the ground, and says quietly in its ear, “Let’s do this my way.”

      Perfectly stated.

    • Ella B. Mudge

I love Swinton.  In that first photo of her with the faux bald head (wearing the maroon coat,) she looks like the guy who was the lead singer for Midnight Oil.

    • Kelleri Nicole

The real question here is, why don’t I own Acne’s wool jacket? Such a great job selling the clothes!!!

    • Anonymous

      So Bowie! Love it.

    • Greg Wellman

Were some of those photos a deliberate homage to The Man Who Fell to Earth?  It’s been a long time since I saw that movie.  If not, then kudos for TLO to the sly Bowie reference.  If so, then it wasn’t sly, but why no direct comment on it?

    • http://www.myblackfriendsays.com myblackfriendsays

I like the intro you wrote for this post.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=716284536 Terra Lynne Walker Mrkulić

She’s the most interesting thing going on. Hollywood (male and female) should put down the silicone and the botox and take some lengthy notes.

I thought I couldn’t love her more, and I WAS WRONG.

Tilda is fearless. FEARLESS.  She defies.
Some of the shapes she creates with her body are the most beautiful I have ever seen in a fashion magazine.  And that’s going way, way back, past many of the best professional models from the middle of the last century.

      These images are ethereal.
      The makeup is incredible.
Bravo to all who created this groundbreaking editorial.

I love the hat.  Want it.

    • Anonymous

It’s probably the least weird one but I love the last picture.  That coat is exquisitely gorgeous.

    • http://twitter.com/MsCaityCat Caitlin

      Utterly magnificent.

This story is EVERYTHING>  Living for the “Comme des Laurent” and the “Fifth Element” look AND the windy red look.  The baldy snatch is FAB FAB FAB.  Jerry Stafford better WORK!!!!!!  Tilda Swinton RULES.  Best story seen in a very long time.
