Pairs Division: Pinto and Franco

Posted on July 29, 2011

Let’s take a short break from Project Runway bitchery and get some red carpet bitchery out of our systems, darlings.

Freida Pinto and James Franco at 20th Century Fox Los Angeles Premiere of “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” in Hollywood. Freida Pinto is wearing a Juan Carlos Obando gown paired with Brian Atwood shoes.

Juan Carlos Obando Resort 2012 Collection

They make a very striking couple, so long as you don’t look too close.

HE: Is wearing a pretty great suit. The color’s a bit heavy and autumnal-looking, but we love a man who can rock a plaid suit in this day and age. The hem is too long on the pants, of course. The tie was a great choice but it looks like it was tied by an 11-year-old Catholic school boy. And maybe it’s for a role, but we’re all about being unfair here: the hair, both on top of his head and on his face, does not suit him at all. He looks a little sloppy and dirty. Score: 6.5/10. Nice suit, badly detailed.

SHE: Has made green her signature color. In fact, we’re such red carpet whores that we think of bright, brilliant greens when her name comes up. She’s smart, because it suits her exactly and it’s not a color one sees on the red carpet, which means it’s both attention-getting and a bit of a statement. Having said that, we don’t love this dress. From the back, it’s got a beautiful drape to it, but from the front – and we don’t know if this is a dress issue, fit issue, or she’s just not wearing it correctly – it makes her entire torso look very droopy. Her hair is good, but looks a bit helmet-y from the back, and her makeup is flawless. Love the little pops of subtle color in the jewelry. Just right. And since there’s so much color above, we don’t actually mind the neutral pumps this time. She’s a woman of color, so they actually contrast with her skin instead of making her look like she has hooves. Score: 7.5/10. There’s a lot of great stuff here, but the droopy boobs are hard to ignore. Also, the extremely asymmetrical hem bothers us.

Combined score: 7/10. Not bad, but a little zhuzhing and shifting might have made a difference here. Keep trying, kids.

Love the color.  But yeah, the droopy boob effect is weird, although it’s nice that there’s enough room in there that she didn’t have to bother with a bag.

Yeah, what’s with the floppy boob dresses on the red carpet?

I believe TLo highlighted another just this last week.

I like the dress, or maybe just the dress on her. I don’t like asymmetrical hems, either, but for some reason this one looks OK to me. I agree about the boob droop effect, but hers are sufficiently evident and well-positioned that she gets past the problem, in my eyes.

Does this designer despise women?  Look at the side view of the model and imagine she isn’t a young, gorgeous woman but an 80-year-old.  It isn’t hard.  Ridiculous.

  • Anonymous

I love her makeup–she just glows!  And I agree, that color is great on her.  Him?  He is fighting with RD Jr. for the award for “Most Extreme Amount of Product a Male Can Get in His Hair Without Dripping on His Suit”.

Yeah the dress looks bad on Frieda, but it looks way worse on the model. So loads of points for Frieda for doing better than that!

In James’ two solo shots he looks like he’s wearing his dad’s suit at a family portrait studio. Boy needs to step up his posing/face.

Hmmm… disagree on both counts. I think they look great. At least it seems like they’re putting in some effort. I mean, think of the guys we’ve seen lately — Shia LeBoef, Dominic Cooper, Justin Timberlake — who looked like they couldn’t be bothered.

That first pic-is that weird trick of the lighting?  It looks like a seam is running from the hem to the waistband of her dress.  The color of the dress is great, but I’m not such a fan of the style of the dress.  Not bad, just not that great.

He looks pretty good, minus the stoner head.

    • Anonymous

does he ever not looked stoned.  it’s pretty amazing.  love him though.

I think Franco is wearing his hair so long and sloppy because the curls in the front cover up the rather obvious male pattern baldness that’s about to take away his boyish pretty looks, and he’s not ready to commit to a shaved head look (if it could suit him, which I doubt).

  • Scott Hester-Johnson

(My husband’s secret lover whom I hate) James Franco always looks scuzzy.

Maybe it’s ’cause he doesn’t have time for a shower because he’s so gosh darn busy running from school to school for his thirteen degree programs, his (crash and burn) awards show hosting duties, installing four gallery shows of his over-hyped artwork, teaching yet another James Franco on James Franco about James Franco class and filming seven 3D movies simultaneously. Oh, and stealing other people’s husbands.

    Scuzzy Bastard.

    • Aly Light

A friend of mine was (briefly) in the same creative writing MFA program as him. I heard a thing or two about the critiques he gave, and based on those I can say that James Franco is not exactly the mind-bending genius he believes himself to be.

That dress is tragic.  Nobody should be wearing it.

  • Anonymous

You were way too generous… she’s a gorgeous woman, but you wouldn’t know it from that awful dress.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_IHWCJIMARF4OOW6PQZQS3RFOOA JillK

OMG, that horrible tit sling thing is just atrocious. IMO that alone takes the entire look down to a 3/10. When that image first loaded, I literally made an audible gasp.

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

The dress looks droopy on the model, too.  You can sort of tell, and it’s probably why her body is facing away from the camera.

  • Anique Ashraf

Is it just me or does anyone get an Oscar flashback when you see James Franco?  And why is he so stiff all the time?

  • Anonymous

I’d give James Franco higher than a 6.5 (especially when Justin got a 5 for his sloppy unseasonal look).  At least the man is wearing a suit on the red carpet–and he looks good, minus some nitpicks.  Yes, the front of Freida’s dress is tragic.  A waste with someone so strikingly beautiful.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.parker Sara Parker

Everyone has one style thing that absolutely drives them up the wall, and which they can’t forgive.  For me, it’s what I call the “My Dad’s Suit Award.”  No matter how sharp the suit on its own, poor fitting makes it look like a junior high school kid who has to borrow his dad’s suit.
Franco definitely gets that award here.  I would have given him a 4/10, stylish suit or no.  The rest I agree with.

  • MilaXX

He looks pretty good, but perhaps a bit banker guy. Facial hair is stupid and hem is a tad long but he earns back points for at least dressing appropriately to pole dance his movie. 6.5/10
She is wearing a pretty color, but I think this may be a runway only dress. I’m not a big fan of the mullet dress and this one looks too droopy up top. Hair/makeup and accessories are okay. 7/10

Combined score: 6.75/10 good effort by both, just not great.

  • Anonymous

Oh, AGREED on James Franco’s hair situation. Ew. And I normally like a guy with a bit of facial scruff, but it does not suit him. He’s definitely a man who needs to shave every day and be impeccably groomed. The messy look does not work for him.
He confuses me. I find him SO handsome, devastatingly so with that crinkly-eyed smile of his, but he so often looks skeevy and greasy.

Her: Shame about the effect that dress has on her boobage area, because she’s gorgeous and that color is heavenly on her. Her hair is so shiny and her smile is so pretty that I have a bit of a girl-crush on her.

  • aussiegal77

Franco – great suit, even got the hems right, but hate his hair and that grin.

Freida – LOVELY shade of green but ruined by the dress which is making my eye twitch.  Love the pumps and the accessories, she’s such a pretty gal, if only her dress were better….

  • Anonymous

The color looks great on her, but it’s hard to figure out how the dress is supposed to go.  On the model, it looks like the long part is in the front (which would be pretty strange and just asking to be tripped over). The side/back view looks much better on Freida than on the model.  James Franco looks good (except for the hair).  Looks like he put some effort into it and recognizes that he needs to get dressed-up and not like he just threw on the first clothes he found (like Justin Timberlake has looked lately).

  • Judy_J

They both have drooping issues.  Her bodice, his trousers.  Nice try, poorly executed.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=12500056 Joseph Lamour

Why does James Franco always look like he needs to go to the bathroom as soon as he gets in the theater? And why do I still find him hot?

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

James! Grow it out or shave it off! Stubble is not cute.

  • Alyson Lamble

There is such a thing as “too much draping” and her dress is a spot-on example of it.

  • http://wipgirl.wordpress.com/ kristel

It’s probably not for a part, but he kind looks like a drunk professor. Particularly in the photo just below the model photo of Freida’s dress. He looks like he’s barely holding himself upright.

  • Anonymous

Hurray, an actor who put some effort into his looks.  I don’t mind his curly hair, but I really wish he had shaved.

I was just thinking this morning that the pairs division is really a drag lately since so many men just can’t seem to look as pulled together as their partners.

  • Anonymous

If the suit fit him better and he was clean shaven, I’d think James looked great. I like curls like that on a guy. The fit on her dress is all wrong, that draping is awful. I love the color. So few people can pull off a green like that and it suits her quite niely.

I would switch teams for her.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

To my shame, I find him insufferable.  I don’t know why, but I just can’t with him. I think it’s the smugface.

  • Anonymous

That dress would confuse every part of my body it touched. One leg would keep wondering where the rest of the skirt is and the other would be kicking the long part out of its way. And the top – ugh! The last thing I need is more encouragement to my boobs to droop to navel-level.  But Frieda is so gorgeous it almost doesn’t matter what she is wearing. She’s nearly unscorable.

I love me some James Franco and I’m partial to windowpane plaids, but I can’t argue with your remarks and score. Nice outfit sloppily worn. What a shame.

  • http://twitter.com/LianaBrooks Liana Brooks

It’s the dress, even on the model it’s droopy. The dress almost looks backwards, long in front and short in back. Almost a reverse-mullet which is never a good look on anyone. The color is gorgeous, but the style is hideous. Let the designer take the brunt of your rage.

  • Anonymous

She looks great.  Love the dress – she’s so thin that she doesn’t really look droopy – it’s clearly the drape of the dress.  Him – meh.  Shave and haircut would go a long way.

  • Aly Light

I CANNOT with James Franco. You two are being quite kind to not subtract at least a point for that obnoxious, self-loving smirk on his face.

  • Anonymous

I think the droopy boobage is more forgivable than the asymmetric hem.  In front the hem slopes from one length to another, but in the back I cannot stand how it is short and then suddenly long after the seam.

  • http://twitter.com/poptartsjen Pop Tarts Jen

I’m in love with that color of dress! Must have more dresses that color! But not that style. Blech. And James Franco looks like a dork, but that’s kind of his schtick, right? Not a fan of the hair, either. So much potential … but they just didn’t bring it!

Gah–he ALWAYS looks sloppy and dirty.  And don’t forget high.  I wanted to like him back in the Spiderman days, but I’ll pass from now on.

Holy Titscrepancy Dress!  That’s just a shame right there.  It looks like green taffy is melting down her body, both upstairs and down.  Ick.

How can a dress have a train in the front? It is impossible to walk.
The modification with the side train is somewhat better. I lke the color.

I’ll go with the scores as given by TLO. For the reasons as given.

She’s very pretty but the saggy boob drape on the dress isn’t doing her any favors. Still hate the shoes, even if they were in a different color I just can’t get behind platform peeptoes.

I like his suit, but he almost ruins it with the tacky face fuzz and moppy hair.

  • Anonymous

let me just say this about that – I wore that color to my junior prom and had a horrible time, and I used that print for a high school picnic with the band and also had a horrible time.

Why is there a train in the front of this dress?

So did they make that weird guy in the Heineken commercial (the one with the Asteroid Galaxy Tour song about smoking cigars and living in the golden age) look like James Franco on purpose?

Oh look. It’s my senior prom dress.

  • Mariah J

I love the color of the dress, it suits her perfectly. I’m not so in love with her lipstick color. Oh, Franco was there too? I barely noticed.

He’s looking like he needs to lay off the bottle these days. Bloated ‘holic is creeping in .

  • Shawn Hill

They both look great. He’s aging, and she’s stunning. Nothing wrong with either.
