Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake for ELLE

Posted on July 15, 2011

It’s Friday in July and you’re probably cranky because you’re in work, just counting down the endless minutes. You know what you need? Pretty celebrities dry humping in designer clothes, that’s what!

Strapless stretch crepe dress from Lanvin. Cotton shirt, wool tie, and wool pants from Lanvin.

Mila Kunis and Justin Timberlake
August 2011 Issue of ELLE
Photo: Carter Smith; styled by Joe Zee

First: sound bites; then opinions; then pictures. Ready? GO!

ELLE: “Friends with benefits”: a good idea or a bad idea?
Justin Timberlake: [Smiles] It is such a good idea—until it’s a bad idea.
Mila Kunis: I concur. Ultimately, it ends when someone wants to go and get serious with somebody. More times than not, a person catches feelings and somebody gets hurt.

ELLE: Most annoying thing your costar did on set?
JT: She would serenade me, all of us, in the makeup trailer—
MK: I can’t sing.
JT: Couldn’t carry a tune if I put it in a bucket for her. It’s awesome, though, because she does not give a shit.

Everyone make a big W out of their thumbs and forefingers and roll their eyes right now. There. Now we can continue.

Thank God Joe Zee is so damn talented, because we really adore the guy and we’d hate to have to bitch about his work. He’s really good at styling looks without making them look styled. Does that make any sense? There’s a naturalism to these pictures. That movie they’re flogging looks shitastic, but we were struck by how damn much chemistry the two of them seem to have here. Then we realized if they’d been overstyled or styled in a different way, they’d never have looked as comfortable rolling around a bed or lying on the floor. It’s a romantic, sexy, casual sort of feel and you can tell from the pictures that it made things easy for them. How much do you want to bet they don’t have half this chemistry in that movie?

Love them.  Love the spread.  I’m actually excited for the movie because their chemistry comes across in the trailer and JT is just hot.  He didn’t do it for me when I was in high school and he was in *Nsync, but ever since his first SNL hosting gig – YUM.  And she also is hot.

Agreed, they look fantastic in these shots, and definitely have chemistry. Ain’t gonna see that movie, though, despite my somewhat embarrassing fangirl love for Justin Timberlake.

      I loves me some JT!

Preach! Thanks for the pretty celebrities!

Okay, the first pic is my favorite.  Very natural and so darn cute.  I also like the 2nd one on the bed in the green dress.  That’s the kind of stuff I like-it may or may not be posed, but it reminds me of every intimate relationship I’ve had.

The rest of the pictures are what I expected.  They look good, and I agree with the chemistry.

  • http://twitter.com/miggylol Miggy!

It’s always pleasant to see fashion shots with settings besides “dour” and/or “fierce.” I love the shot of her kissing his scrunched-up nose. It even makes me like a lace sleeve, which never happens!

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

That girl does not take a bad picture.  Love that last image and her fabulous shoes.

    • Anonymous

I can’t decide if that is aggressiveness or domination.
      Love the teal shoes!

  • Rand Ortega

That dude is hilarious! His SNL stints are fantastic. Mila I never found amusing on “That ’70′s Show”. But she’s gorgeous & I’m curious to see how’s she’s going to capitalize on her Oscar nomination. Not sure if I’ll go see FWB, because of the other flick exactly like it that came out earlier this year. Hated it.
This spread is terrific. Flirty, sexy sweet w/ a taste of nostalgia. The clothes are 2D4 (would kill for the RL marabou dress).
Interesting note: No “William Rast”(Timber’s own line)?

    • Josh Seelig

Mila wasn’t nominated for an Oscar.

Justin Timberlake is a talented musician, but he should stick to making music. Or if he wants to become an actor, he should spend some (more) time learning the craft. Putting him in these heavily promoted movies next to _professional actors_ is not doing him any favors.

    • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

Ummm, did you see Social Network? He was incredible, full stop.

      • Anonymous

Seconded. Totally stole almost every scene he was in.

    • Anonymous

Actually, what I appreciate about Timberlake is that when he started doing acting roles, he worked almost exclusively in serious indie dramas (seriously, the guy has done a shedload of them) instead of major studio pictures. And produced almost unerringly good work in them. Only in very recent years has he started doing comedies and what you call “heavily promoted movies”. So I think he has put in time learning the craft. Whether this movie is any good, though… we’ll have to see.

You usually don’t list the prices. Somehow that makes it a bit hilarious–the charming, informal, cozy quality of the poses and the insane price tags.

    • Anonymous

I laughed out loud at the “his own socks” tag–just hit me as ridiculously silly!

  • Une femme

It’s taken a long time, but I can finally look at Justin Timberlake and sometimes not think of “Dick-in-a-Box.”

This is really well done, and yes, they convey a lot of chemistry.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UCLO5V2YD36T7QMPKOC7YXPOFU Erica

For me, it’s him as Robin Gibb on the Barry Gibb talk show, with the blond wig and all.  The movie looks dumb, but he has good comedic timing, I loved her on That 70s Show, and she’s gorgeous, so it probably isn’t the worst romantic comedy to come out recently–or even this year.

    • Anonymous

My 22 year old son introduced me to “Dick-in-a-Box” and I will be forever grateful to him. It actually made me like Justin Timberlake.

      • Anonymous

Thank god for our kids, right? When my son went to college I lost 50 pop culture IQ points overnight.

There once was a time when I heard of/went to see hot new comics & cleverly literate musicians who could actually play their instruments 2 years before anyone else I knew (over 25) heard of them, but those days are gone.

      • Lisa

I don’t care how immature it makes me sound, but “Dick In A Box” will never not be funny – I love that!

  • http://twitter.com/omg_dora Dora K.

    Wow, I love these pictures.

  • Christine Campbell

These made me smile.  Perfect escapist daydreaming material for this dragging Friday afternoon. Thanks, TLo.

  • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I don’t know, they might have really good chemistry anyway.  They both appear to be very charming people who are easy to like and get along with.

I’m not seeing the movie, because my summer movie calendar is already overloaded — so many Marvel flicks, so little time…

I just don’t see the appeal of Justin Timberlake.  I think he just looks gross.

    • Anonymous

Thank you, I thought I was alone in that. People are always horrified when I say he skeeves me out. He’s another one that needs to shave his neck!

      • Anonymous

I think he’s skeezy too!  He just seems so slimy to me….  I LOVE Mila and I think she’s SOOOO beautiful and she seems super fun and nice, but I would rather she her have chemistry with someone that didn’t seem so….. gross.

    • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

I’m with you, too.  Never got Justin Timberlake.  But even I can see the amazing chemistry they have, and TLo is right (of course):  I’ll bet that film gets a C- in chemistry.

  • Anonymous

TLo said, “Everyone make a big W out of their thumbs and forefingers and roll their eyes right now.”
    You guys crack me up.

I imagine it wouldn’t be tough to have chemistry with Timberlake.
The photos are great; it’s hard not to smile looking at these. She’s gorgeous and photographs well. The movie…enh…it’s probably one of those that I’ll end up watching on a Sunday afternoon on TBS when there’s nothing else to do.

  • Renee Thomas

It is so refreshing to see a mag cover photo that isn’t photoshopped to make its subject(s) look like plastic dolls. They both look human, and great, on the cover.

I have no feelings about him one way or the other, but she is so, so pretty. Like, makes you ache to look at her pretty.

Love the shot of them laughing on the bed. Looks like one of them said something funny during the previous awkward shot and this was the result.

  • Victoria Ugarte

Saw the movie at preview! Actually quite good! The chemistry they have in this shoot? The same! love.

“It’s Friday in July and you’re probably cranky because you’re in work, just counting down the endless minutes”

Not me!  Just back from an outdoor jazz concert (every Friday in July) and am taking a short break from packing for a few days in New York.

I retired as of July 1, and am enjoying every minute of it.  Summer in the city is so much better when you’re not working!

    • Anonymous

Well congratulations to you, Ms. Lilithcat!  (And clever of you to plan to be able to retire relatively young!)

    • Lisa

Jelluz!!!  Congratulations, and enjoy your well-earned retirement!

    • Anonymous

Congratulations, Lilithcat! I predict many jazz concerts in your future, plenty of time to read – -  whatever makes you happy!

  • Jill Roberts

Chemistry squared!  Oh but that dreadful-looking movie…

  • Anonymous

Well, ignoring that famous & (if he’s got any sense & didn’t run into bad investments) financially independent thing he’s got going on, plus, yeah, every now and then he moves pretty nicely, ANYway ignoring all those things, what leaps to mind viewing these is:

    He should BE so lucky.

  • Helen C

    She ages really fast.

  • Anonymous

I covet those teal Manolo Blahniks.  I also think the Tom Ford cocktail dress is lovely on her.

  • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

    Mmmmmmmmm. :)

  • Anonymous

I love the natural pictures of them, especially the second one on the bed when she is rolling away laughing!! It just makes me smile!! I would love to know what was said to crack them both up! I don’t think either of them is a good enough actor to fake that kind of chemistry.

  • Anonymous

I feel nothing. And I’m more than done with black, white, grey, navy, tea-stained or taupe lace.

Love these photos. And the movie looks a hundred times better than Natalie and Ashton’s version (No Strings Attached), which I didn’t see. I’ll probably go see this one.

  • Anonymous

Buy the magazine. Don’t bother with the movie.

  • Anonymous

Love the pictures, and am dying to see the movie.  I can’t help it.  I have enormous, embarrassing lust for Justin Timberlake.

  • Anonymous

Great pics and styling…but the real star is Mila.  Her personality comes through in all the shots…love her!  :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/samuel.j.donovan Samuel Joesph Donovan

Ugh, you guys are SO biased–he looks mostly fine, but she looks RIDICULOUS–way too overstyled for both the shoot and her co-model.  And what the hell is with the posing?  The only thing making these photos look natural is that their bathed in so much excess light that you can’t actually tell what’s going on in them.

The first picture is cute, but the rest of them look terrible.

  • Anonymous

    They’re so darn cute.
I love that the pictures tell a complete story and the explosive chemistry they have does’t hurt eithet.
Sweet gift for my eyes, thank you.

  • Anonymous

She is so freakin’ HOT!  And I love the way she wheres clothes.  He’s ok, not really my type at all.  Great spread…..

  • Anonymous

I LOVE the one with the Stones record.  Great photos.

  • MilaXX

The fact that they are both easy on the eyes doesn’t hurt. The more I see Mila, the more I like her even though she has yet to make a movie I am willing to pay money to see.

  • jeneria

I like her.  He irritates me to no end.  I don’t like his music and I don’t buy that he’s a talented actor.  Ugh.

  • Lisa

I won’t bother to see this movie, but I do think he’s funny as hell on SNL – I never miss it when he hosts. And the styling is great, they look like they have real chemistry together in these pictures.  They’re the Anti-Pattinson/Witherspoon.

    over Mister JT

  • Anonymous

Though I find Kunis and Timberlake appealing, I’ve got no interest whatsoever in the film, but I do love the photography here and the set ups in #2 and #5.

  • Anonymous

AMAZING photos. Their chemistry is off the charts!

  • Anonymous

Wow, what a great spread! It’s hard to believe they aren’t a couple in these pictures. I love that the clothing and the people got equal attention and one wasn’t highlighted by using detraction on the other. Say what you will about JT or Mila’s talent – Joe Zee’s talent is undeniable!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VA5XLSF3QRELSC3MUFSXLP4EIE rebecca

Wow. I live in Italy and Elle U.S. is pretty damn expensive (i.e. a waste of money) but I’d buy the issue just for these shots. Ahhhmazing…

  • http://korilian.livejournal.com/ korilian

I honestly don’t really like these pics so much, except for the one where they’re rolling around laughing. That one is ace.

  • Haley Buchanan

Beautiful clothes, beautiful people, beautiful styling.  I love that the pictures tell a story and Mila and JT have hella chemistry.  I don’t know about that movie, but I’d possibly watch a video of them on the set of this shoot for an hour and a half.

  • Anonymous

HOT!  Without being slutty. And that’s saying something.  Joe Zee is brilliant.  Ktichen counter? Check. LIFE magazine in bed? Check. Rolling Stones vinyl?  The man knows how to tell a story without saying a word.  Love this!

  • Cheri Lee

Wow the chemistry is off the charts.  I love the pic where she is laughing on the bed.  They make these clothes look like something we all should be wearing in bed and around the house!

  • Mariah J

She’s doing all the work in these, he’s not much of a model.

  • Anonymous

If the movie is only half as good as they pictures, it is worth seeing in the movie theatre. Wow. Good work.

  • Anonymous

Gotta say, I’m just beginning to get used to looking at fashion spreads (thanks, TLo) but ‘his own socks’ I HOPE so (I know, sometimes they are credited), still that’s just silly.

  • Anonymous

Justin Timberlake always has too many clothes on. My point being: he should wear none.

  • frankystein123

I thought the film is pretty decent actually, much better than most of the rom-coms floating around these days. And yes, Joe Zee has worked his magic once again.

  • frankystein123

Understated and sexy at the same time.
