Michelle Obama in Sophie Theallet

Posted on July 05, 2011

After 3 straight days of European royalty (with more to come), it’s about time for some good old-fashioned American bitchery, wouldn’t you say?

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama at Independence Day celebration on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington. Michelle Obama is wearing a Sophie Theallet dress dress paired with Lanvin sandals.

Sophie Theallet Spring 2011 Collection/Model: Katharina

Lanvin crystal-embellished flat satin sandals

Not that we have anything bitchy to say here. She looks cute. One of the best things about Michelle Obama is that when she’s not hosting state dinners in couture, she looks remarkably like she could be one of your neighbors, assuming that your neighbors wear Sophie Theallet and Lanvin to July 4th festivities. Okay, maybe one of your wealthier neighbors. Still, she looks like a typical American woman at a summer cookout, only dressed better. Anyway, the dress is super-cute. We’re not as in love with the sandals, though. Our feet are sweating just looking at them.

I don’t like the sandals and I don’t understand why the dress has black straps, but it’s a pretty dress and she looks great in it.

She always looks good in Sophie Theallet. I also like the print and color combo of this dress. Referencing the flag, but not too  literal.

The black straps look like she’s wearing a strapless dress over a bra – it’s much too informal. Bad design decision. Ironically, without the straps it would look fab – the bodice is fitting her very nicely. I’d have cut them off.

The danger to cutting off the straps is the prude police here would be screaming about “strapless? On the First Lady?!?!” the way they do when she does sleeveless.  Prudish nuts…….  Personally, I would have liked to see a black banding at the hem to finish this off.

I thought of bra straps and a strapless dress, too.

I think the black straps are supposed to tie together (figuratively) with the black boarder along the hem.  Sadly, this boarder is so thin you don’t even notice it, and you just get BraStraps.

I thought beach towel over swimsuit.

What about the shoes on the Sophie Theallet model? LOVETHEM! Anyone have any idea where they’re from?

Cute dress, love the print. As for the sandals: I don’t think black sandals ever look casual, but I’m thinking she chose them because of the black straps on the dress. But he’s wearing dress shoes as well. I wonder why he didn’t wear sneakers.

They always look best when they’re together though, don’t they?

Exactly, GT. When they’re together, they both light up.

I think the only time BHO wears sneakers is when he’s on the basketball court.

Don’t like the sandals at all, but as usual, she looks comfortable, put-together, and pretty.

The Black sandals bring in the black on the dress. Plus she is an Amazon. She can’t wear shoes that have her towering over her husband!

    • Sara__B

Besides the fact that high heels and 4th of July don’t go together, why can’t she wear shoes that have her towering over her husband? I’m sure he’s man enough to handle it.

I think one of the things I like most about Mrs. Obama is that she is built like and average person and not a model.  I find it something I can relate to. She looks great here. I’m not a fan of the sandal, but I think they look okay. I don’t care that they are black, I just don’t like the heavy detail on the front. I think the black picks up the straps on the dress.

Tell me about it. If my cousin Veda sees this, she’ll be at the next family picnic in the closest imitation she can find at Lane Bryant; sitting in a lawn chair waiting for someone to bring her some cracked crab and a wine cooler; telling her how much she looks like the First Lady.

    Ahhhh, summer.

    • Anonymous

Scottyf, you crack me up all the time–and this post did not disappoint!

    • Anonymous

Now I known where my family picnics go wrong – we don’t run to cracked crab. This oversight *must* be corrected!

    • Patricia Biswanger

Scottyf, please don’t ever start your own blog, because this one takes enough of my time as it is, and I just don’t have time for two mandatory blogs, and I would totally have to read yours too!

  • Jessica Goldstein

The dress is adorable. Don’t know if I like the sandals or not, but I certainly don’t love them with the dress. I would have preferred something closer to what the model wore or, barring that, a black espadrille with more heel.

I really like the dress for the event, including the straps – keeps it from being too expected. And I do like the print and the red and blue – but somehow it’s just a bit too bright. Maybe it’s the pictures. Shelley certainly can handle bold. Just a minor quibble. And the President looks fabulous – and I’m SO glad the blues don’t match. Is he wearing a silk shirt?

  • Judy_J

I like the entire look, from head to toe.

She looks very nice, not trying too hard at all.  I like it a lot.  the sandlas do seem a little heavy for my taste but I cut slack on footwear, I assume they are super comfortable and that is why she choose them.

  • Anonymous

J’adore la robe! She  looks fantastic in it and it makes a perfect, not-too-literal salute to the holiday. The black straps are an unusual choice, but make the red and blue pop. Not in love with the sandals though. Let’s just assume she wore them for comfort.

the dress is terrific and the black straps take it from Talbot’s to designer. a clever touch. the sandals aren’t my taste. I wonder if she doesn’t feel that thong sandals are appropriate or doesn’t like wearing them. the options for non-thong flat sandals this summer are pretty much limited to cage sandals — which would probably also fall into the category of “not appropriate.”

Man, those are some ugly shoes.

I don’t think that dress is at all flattering.  Yes, the print is different, but she looks shapeless and heavy in this dress, so does the model. I still love them both though! Mr. President, silver fox!!

That dress is lovely but I have no love for the shoes…frumpy even if it is Lanvin.

Love the look, and how she wore red and blue without wrapping herself in the flag.

    Those sandals are hideous.

Love the look but why does she always look so ungainly?  When standing feet her are never together and when walking she looks clumsy.  She could use some old-fashioned finishing school training, even a garden varierty red carpet starlet has it all over her in deportment.

Sraps should not have been white and they should have been placed wider.

Tall as she is, she cannot pull off flat sandals with material up to the calf. It has the same effect as ankle straps.

Those ARE ugly sandals. But overall she looks fine.

I must agree with you, because I think she looks great in all the shots that don’t show the shoes, but stumpy in the one that does. And the one thing we know for sure about Shelly is that she’s not stumpy.

It is a really cute frock. I think she rocks it. As to the shoes, she rocks those, too, though many of the comments have said they would find them too much for the current US summer. She looks lovely, I think :)

  • Anonymous

I don’t like this look at all – I go back to my earlier comments that when she is not decked out in formal wear, I think she usually is Out.

He looks bland but okay, although it looks like his shoes would work better with a suit  but the picture is pretty far away.

  • narita_rayna

wow that is seriously the most perfect dress for the occasion. she looks great

I like the casual mood of the dress, but I don’t find the cut flattering on her at all.  Also, those shoes are yucksville.

i also dont like this look too much, she looks like she’s desperately trying to be younger…. i dont really think its appropriate at all for a first lady.

  • Anonymous

She looks nice, although I agree those sandals wouldn’t have been my first choice – but they are black (coordinates with outfit) and probably comfortable.  It’s great she’s doing red and blue without resorting to overt ‘holiday’ wear.

One thing we need to recognize is that she ALWAYS looks much better for evening than she does for day. She rarely makes a real mistake with after-5 wear and in fact, usually looks glorious. January Jones is the opposite. Gorgeous in jeans – always a problem in (contemporary) evening wear. Why is this?  I don’t understand…..

I SOO want this dress. if only I had the $$$. :-)

MY DAUGHTER WAS THERE!  Sorry to say, the Obama’s were jerks and refused to eat on the lawn with the servicemen & women and then they went to the rooftop to watch the fireworks.

    Snobbish A-holes.

    • Anonymous

The Servicemen and Servicewomen didn’t have the money to “contribute” to have dinner at the White House :o(

  • elzatelzabelz

Her dress really does look like one a woman wore at our hometown parade yesterday-no lie. Interesting. I keep wanting a bit more…something from Michelle. She either knocks it out of the park or strikes out. This? Hmmm, maybe a base hit.

I adore, nay, damn near worship Michelle Obama, but I have let this go by too often:  I AM NOT LOVING THIS HAIR LOOK.  I have stifled myself since the first time she wore it out in public, but I cannot hold it in any longer.

  • Anonymous

It’s a great, happy dress with very sad sandals. A little heel, maybe another color?

  • Patricia Biswanger

Not loving the black strap or the sandals, but otherwise OK.

And I may someday become resigned to them, but I just don’t like her eyebrows.  What gives with that anyway?  Can someone explain to me why someone other than a drag queen would draw on fake eyebrows?  Doesn’t she have real ones?

    • Anonymous

Maybe she’s an Amanda Palmer fan.

  • Anonymous

Love the black straps on this dress: they’re unexpected and push the print away from kitschy somewhere closer to classy.

  • Margot Brose

Guys… why do you say nothing about her hair? This would be an adorable summer look if she didn’t look like her favorite brand of product was Elmer’s spray adhesive, akay?
