In or Out: Zoe Saldana in Chloé

Posted on July 11, 2011

You guys, we feel a little funny. Red carpet superstar (in our minds, at least) Zoe Saldana is wearing a pretty dress WHICH IS POORLY ACCESSORIZED. Just when we thought we’d gotten Cate Blanchett semi-rehabilitated, another one drops from lack of fabuloxygen.

Zoe Saldana arrives at The Foundation Polo Challenge sponsored by Audi at the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club in Santa Barbara, California. Zoe wears a Chloe dress, Van Cleef and Arpels jewelry, Valentino wedges, and a Lanvin clutch.

Chloé Resort 2012 Collection/Model: Jacquelyn Jablonski

To be fair, she chose the belt as it was originally paired with the dress for the presentation. It’s still not a great belt for this dress. She chose to do something a little interesting and wore it with the buckle facing behind her, which we kind of like, but it still doesn’t make the belt look any less incongruous with the dress. But the real offense here are the shoes. They’re pretty fab on their own but they’re completely wrong with this dress. And what’s up with the high collar or scarf she’s wearing here? The dress looks much better without it so we’re assuming she has a massive hickey.

VOTE NOW!

IN! It’s classic romantic with an edge, you bitches!

OUT! Did she choose her accessories via dartboard?

The Minion Opinion on Jen Aniston’s “I can go potty all by myself!” dwess was an OUT, which is as it should be.

Gotta vote in! I sort of like the attitude of the shoes paired with the softness of the dress. Sorry! :D

    • Sam Corbett

In! She’s too fierce to let a little problem like a poorly chosen shoe drag her out of the perpetually in club.

      In. She’s fabulous.

Besides the scarf, I cant find anything wrong. I LOVE this look.

The belt and the shoes wouldn’t be my first choice, but I still think she looks great. FWIW, I like the belt better than the shoes; I can see where the stylists were going with that, but the shoes are way too casual.

Still, she’s an **IN**… Zoe Saldana on an “off” day is still a thousand times better than other ladies of the red carpet on their best.

    • Mariah J

Those shoes are awful with the dress…she should have kept the sleeves too instead of tying them around her neck. This was close, but too much wrong. OUT

    • http://twitter.com/caratweets Cara

I like it actually. The studded shoes give the flowy floral some edge. I vote IN.

    • Nicole Chubb

What’s crazier at she’s at a high society event, in which the attendees apparently wear WRISTBANDS. Last time I wore a wristband, I was at Senor Frog’s in Mexico. Maybe that explains the alleged hickey.

      • Crystal Thomas

_That’s_ what that is? I read the whole review wondering “why aren’t TLo commenting on her crazy-ass bracelet-it looks cheap and clashes terribly!” I was hoping for a closeup in the pictures. A little relieved-now I can give this a cautious “in”.

    • Anonymous

Definite in. Including the shoes. I think they work well with how soft the dress is.

    • http://twitter.com/warontara Tara

I think she looks fab- IN!

In.  What’s wrong with the shoes paired with the dress or the scarf (which looks like it could be the exact same fabric as the dress)?

    • http://twitter.com/sooyoung doodlebug

the shoes don’t bug me but the high neck really, really does. out.

    • up with pod people

      So in. SO IN.

    • Vaniljekjeks

Out.  The turtle neck was completely unnecessary.

    • Courtney Hellams

the shoes are fierce as hell  but they don’t go with the dress. still a minor complaint, she looks fab. IN!

      OUT!

    • Anonymous

In. I think the high neck suits her: she’s long and elegant and the high neck complements that. The clutch is a simple daytime bag that doesn’t fight with the dress or the jewelry for attention. The shoes are wrong–They’re a bad color and heels that high need something to keep the toes from splaying and jutting forward.

    • All For You Sophia

Sorry, but I like Jacquelyn Jablonski’s overall look better than Zoe’s. The shoes are horrid and the scarf was a really bad idea for July nonetheless! The way she wore the belt is fab though!

    • Anonymous

In because of the last shot. I agree about the shoes/belt but do think the collar looks good on her.

    • Terence Ng

      IN.

IN.  She dialed down the fabulousness for Cathy’s sake.

    • Anonymous

In. I like the edgy shoes with the soft dress. Not crazy about the belt. Zoe rocks.

    • Anonymous

IN for sure.  The accessory choices keep the look from being too Romantic (there are English about – and a couple of them are Royals – but hey, it’s a polo match in Santa Barbara).

For the same reason, I like that she wore this sleeveless — which the scarf effect at the neck adds balance and extra interest to — a little wit and femininity at the same time.

    • Anonymous

In the pic of the model, she has something draped over her arms- it looks like Zoe has repurposed that into a scarf? It’s the same fabric as the dress. I like it, IN for me. I like the shoes too, a little studded surprise peeking out under the soft delicate print. I don’t care for the belt or clutch, but that’s just me disliking the color.

    • Anonymous

But I think the more important question to ask is, “Is that a wristband on her left wrist?” Oh, the indignity!

    • Anonymous

I like the shoes and the dress, hate the scarf. HATE the scarf. Out.

You bitches must’ve gotten up on the wrong side of the bed. Zoe looks FABULOUS. INNNNNNNNNN
And those shoes are effing gorgeous!

    • Anonymous

It’s classic and romantic. It’s IN. Those ol’ rope sandals don’t bother me one little bit.

    • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

      IN.

f it were a traditional red carpet I’d question the shoes, but given that it’s a polo event, the sturdier wedges just make sense if she’s going to be stomping around in the grass.  It sucks when your pretty, pretty heel digs into the dirt and you take a header.  Better a little stylish practicality in these situations.

And I think the scarf is lovely.  She has such a long, delicate neck to begin with that it gives the whole thing a slightly Victorian/romantic feel that compensates for the seriously deep keyhole.

    • Anonymous

Out.  What’s with the totally shapeless dresses this week?

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

I like the belt ok, but those shoes are crazy. Don’t like the ones on the model either. Even so, I love this dress and her hair and everything else. I’m going to pretend I didn’t see the shoes and go with IN.

OUT. The design was much better in the original, with sleeves, without hickey-scarf.

    • http://profiles.google.com/misslauraschultz Laura Schultz

And I think the scarf looks great, not necessarily better without it, IMO.

    • http://www.sineaddoyle.com Sinead

IN. Zoe Saldana has the same ‘everything looks good on me’ gene as Diane Kruger. Also, she’s Uhura now which means she can do no wrong in this nerd’s eyes.

      • MilaXX

And she does Nichelle Nicoles proud.

    • Anonymous

      Too harsh. She looks lovely.

    • Anonymous

I see I’m in the distinct minority here, but those shoes are much too heavy, dark, and casual for the flowy Chloe dress.  I like the sandals, but this is a bad pairing.

      Bad enough for an OUT.

    • Anonymous

In. I agree about the shoes, but I like the scarf/collar effect. And I can’t call out just because the shoes are wrong. I just can’t. Not when she’s so adorable all the way down to the ankles.

    • Anonymous

Looks like the dress had sleeves, too. Much better in the original version. This is middling meh.

A question for the female minions: has anybody ever worn a dress like that, with the open slit down the front? Aren’t you worried the whole time that you’re going to pop out? Or is it only for the very flat chested, or you tape yourself, or what? I’m always mystified by this look.

      • MilaXX

Once, but it wasn’t belly button deep so as long as I was standing or sat straight up, I was fine. If I had to do it again, I’d tape the girls in.

        • Anonymous

That’s what I thought: if you don’t move you’re okay. I wouldn’t be able to handle it: I had enough trouble last night with a fairly deep v-neck that was fine when I was standing, but I didn’t know what was happening when I was sitting and letting my shoulders relax!

yes, the shoes are way too heavy… but… she’s at a polo match, on the grass.  wedges are the way to go.

I think she looks fabulous, as usual, but I HATE those shoes. Ugh, all that studding, along with the espadrille detail, the wedge heel and the t-strap…it’s just too much shit going on for one shoe.

I’ll forgive her those awful shoes, though, because she’s still pretty fabulous.

IN-ish. I like the swathing of the neck and the sleeveless changes she made. Like the turned-around belt. Not loving the clutch. I get the concept of a wedge due to, you know, GRASS. I love the idea of edging up the look with the studded shoe – but – the rope on the shoes is what gives me the frowns. That really is a beautiful dress…also like that she closed up that yawning chest slit a bit as well.

I truly appreciate your objectivity, TLo. But. It’s Zoe aka Lt. Uhura. She’s luminous. Nothing but IN.

Maybe if she were wearing socks w/ those sandals…
      No. Still IN.
      Sorry…

    • MilaXX

I like her look. The only quibble I have is with the blue bracelet. Otherwise I think she looks perfect for the occasion. Heels would since in the grass so it’s either wedges or flats to an event like this.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=49702581 Susan Bullard Mayer

I like the high collar on her – it makes her look even more graceful and swan-like than usual.  But the shoes are a no-go.  Still, she’s IN.

    • Anonymous

Very much IN.  The bad-ass shoes provide the perfect counterbalance to the soft, romantic dress.  I think the scarf is a good solve since i think the dress has giant flutter sleeves.  They totally MacGyvered it into a scarf.  I like!

    • Anonymous

she took the sleeves off, too. used them for the scarf? I don’t mind this dress as much as you do. I think it was an LA attempt at a British floral tea party kind of outfit. she looks pretty. The shrimp color of the belt is great but using a mannish belt style with a brass buckle is wrong for such a light, feminine gown. something softer and twisted lightly, no buckle, might have worked better.

the shoes are completely wrong. they are something one would wear to a pool party or a barbecue, with a denim skirt or shorts. also dislike the [out of the] blue bracelet and basic Girl on the Street hoop earrings.

    • Anonymous

Oh! Come on! While I do agree the shoes are not the best choice, she looks fabulous!

    • Anonymous

Y’all are crazy. I LOVE the high neck, the hair, the backwards belt, and even the alleged horribly placed shoes (I think those shoes are a hell of a lot better than the ones used for the campaign tbh). The only thing I’d change is maybe the earrings. Something tear-dropped would be better.
I think she looks fab. Romantic, modern, and hot. IN, IN, IN! Oh, and to answer the question of a previous poster–for her to belong in the itty-bitty-titty-committee, tape will suffice.

    • Anonymous

I love it. IN.  I like the high necked look which frame her lovely face to a tee.  And I am also digging on the juxtaposition of the flowy feminine dress and the edgier shoes.  If I were her stylist though I would have gone for a slightly darker belt.

I really like the dress with the high neck scarf action and the keyhole opening – sexy without being vulgar.

The belt is too wide and heavy for chiffon, but I can see a belt working, just not that one.

The shoes are a horrible choice.  I hate clunky shoes with lightweight maxis.  So bad 70s.

I like the high collar and the lack of sleeves. The high collar/scarf thingy really frames her face. The shoes are borderline. I don’t think they are as horrible as you think they are. They are probably easier to walk in on grass and bring the outfit more down to earth, as  it were.

      She looks lovely.

IN! I wish the belt was a bit darker but I wouldn’t change those shoes for anything! I prefer the way she is wearing it with the high neck to the version with sleeves actually.

In.  I do think the shoes are a bit heavy, but I agree she was going for edgy.  Plus: standing on grass.  For hours.  Anything lighter would have also meant damp toes and grass smudges.  And the dress is long enough to hide a lot of the shoe.  I also like the high collar (or scarf or whatever).

    • http://twitter.com/Stevesotherhalf Svanhild Salmons

Just the wrong dress for her.

    • AWStevens

Isadora Duncan would not approve… (look her up pups)  The model’s dress is very 1970′s ethereal.  But the neck on Zoe looks like a scarf made from the dress that never ends.  Is the woman hiding a hickey?  OUT!

    • Anonymous

Come on guys, she looks lovely here. The shoes are a no but are mostly covered and i actually prefer the high colar, it gives the dress a litle edge. She is most definitely IN.

Out, by a hair. It’s a 49-51 call in my book. I like that it’s a little naughty in the boob area though so tight around the neck and draped down to her ankles. But the overall score for innovation, accessorization, hair and make up and yes, the shoes, put her in the OUT column.

It’s not the same belt.  The original belt was thinner and had a decorative, and tiny buckle, the one she is wearing has a regular buckle and is wider.  She turned it to the back because it was way too butch for the dress.

In…only because I like the dress, but I wish the belt was turned around.  I call this look “doing the most, while doing the least!”

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_PP4YUZ4KVA6TDLQCL2IGID7DJA F T

Its perfect for this kind of event. What are u guys on about?

    • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

the shoes look more target than couture & the belt screams i am turned around! isnt that clever! but what really annoys me is the way the dress has been altered. it arrived w/ a variety of different levels & subtleties, it hereupon departs as a sundress. that is not an improvement, i dont think.

like kate middleton, this one is so thin that everything looks good on her –nothing breaks the line, it remains clean & polished. but that doesnt mean there arent grey shades of how good an item might look & this one somehow misses the muster pass.

      tired, here.

IN. I think she looks fabulous.

    • Anonymous

You dare to question this woman’s fabulosity?  I hate the shoes, and I also hate the model’s shoes, but otherwise she looks just swell to me.

    • Anonymous

I love the whole look. In.

    • Anonymous

Totally IN. Love that neckline on her. The shoes could be better suited to the dress, but you can’t see that much of them anyway. I like the belt the model is wearing better (it looks similar in color to Zoe’s, but I think it’s different: looks less heavy and has some kind of decorative metal thing in the center that I don’t think is a buckle..?), but I like Zoe’s sleeveless, high-neck version better (on her, at least). Go Zoe!

Have to disagree on this one: She’s IN.  I think they took the material from the sleeves that were cut off & used it around the neck as a scarf instead, and I think it’s wonderful.  what a great contrast to have the practically “show all” bodice set off by the modest high neck.  I’m with you on the shoes being all wrong for the dress, although I bet they’d look great with skinny jeans and a white shirt.  And how nice that her hair is up.  IN for sure.

In :) I think she’s fabulous and looks amazing!

she gets an “in” from me.  it would take far more egregious stylistic crimes for zoe saldana to be out.

IN. It’s not my favorite look of hers ever, but she’s gorgeous and she looks gorgeous here. I like the shoes.

In.  The shoes aren’t quite right with this dress, but overall an ‘in’.

IN! I hate to say it, but you called this one wrong.

I hate the belt (and what is with the blue bracelet?), but otherwise, she looks cool and summer and pretty perfect.  Her shoes are meh, and so are the model’s shoes, but they’re not huge overall detractors.  IN.

      • Christine Campbell

Entrance bracelet to the event.  You’d think they could have done something besides hospital bracelet-chic, no?

    • Jennifer Hofstetter

Totally in.  Even if the accessories aren’t perfect, or even appropriate, she brings the fierce and pulls it off anyway.

    • Anonymous

IN! I actually love the high scarf, it’s very romantic. The shoes aren’t great with the dress, but they don’t cause enough of a detraction for an out.

IN. Don’t know what you guys are so upset about…she looks amazing.

I at first despised the idea of the belt being backward, but it grew on me. I say she is making it work, and her pose is selling it, so I say IN, even though I do not know what that blue thing around her wrist is. It is not a hospital bracelet, is it?

      Still IN, though.

IN. She had the dress altered to get rid of those ridonk angel wing sleeves and added the high neckline. Both improvements IMHO. And I like the shoes and belt too.

I wish the shoes were not wedges, but I kind of dig the sandals look. Would have liked to see some bangles or something, but everything else is fab elegant-casual. IN.

OUT. I think the dress is borderline ugly, and those shoes aren’t helping.

    • Anonymous

I like the shoes with the dress. They add a touch of bad girl to a very feminine outfit. However, I don’t like the belt or the bag and I hate what she’s done with the collar. So that’s a score of 1 out of 4 and yet, I still want to give her an in because, as usual, she’s working the shit out of it. But I’m sorry, Zo, your charm is not going to carry you through this time. OUT!

    • http://twitter.com/rachelruthlee Rachel Lee

In! I actually kind of like the shoes with the outfit, and i think the scarf looks fine! The only thing which pains me is the belt, which looks like it was made of cheap pleather. Fortunately, she wore it backwards, which is really quirky and therefore assuages my pain a little.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_GQIN74TNNQROY5JFPOWWBGJWEM andy

She scooped up the gown’s bodice overlay and knotted it around her neck. Gross. It needs the fluttery gossamer over the top to balance out the bottom. Poor styling, trying too hard? Who cares–it’s looks like ass.
