In or Out: Lucy Liu in Azzedine Alaïa

Posted on July 14, 2011

T Lo red carpet favorite Lucy Liu attended the Cinema Society screening of Snow Flower And The Secret Fan in New York City. Co-attendees Nic and Keith got the T Lo treatment, now it’s Miss Lucy’s turn.

Oh, Miss Lucy. So close.

It’s a cute dress but it’s making her look awfully busty here. That waist detail is just way too thick and we suspect the dress isn’t fitting her in the chest as well as it should, the results of which make her look like she’s ready to bust out of that thing. We like the purse, but that spiral diamond bangle is kind of tacky and whatever she’s got on the other wrist looks like a men’s watch band. Also, nude shoes with this, honey? Please. A simple black sandal would have been so much better.

VOTE NOW!

IN! Picky, picky, picky, you bitches! She looks great!

OUT! Liu is bustin’ out all over! Also, her accessories suck.

As for Kyra Sedgwick’s unfortunate Zac Posen dress and Christina Aguilera’s attempt to shave 40 years off her age, the Minion Opinion on both was O to the UT.

I’m not usually one to jump to conclusions such as these, but is our dear Ms. Liu expecting?  I don’t remember her being quite so va-va-voom ever before and unexpected boob-swellage would certainly be a likely cause of an unfortunate fit like this.

maybe she changed her birth control? that is a thing.

      • Anonymous

It seems like some of the giant boobage might be an optical illusion.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6QWKRI2CKY5KXCQPX3XIZONWTE Michael

taking the chance at sounding a little stereotypical here – do asians naturally have boobs that big? look at here hair – not an illusion.

          • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

They can.  The small frame and subtler curves is the stereotypical Asian body, simply because it is the most common.  But there are always outliers — most Chinese men aren’t close to 7 feet tall either, but Yao Ming still exists.

          • ArKane Fyre

Unfortunately, yes. Asian here. 36DD, with matching hips (I’m around 40-30-41). I can’t find clothes that fit me in Japan to save my life.

I believe you are correct. My roommate in college had a dress like that. She was already quite busty, and that dress made her look like Dolly Parton. Totally an optical illusion.

She looks like a chicken in that thing.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_T24URKJGBLJQPBWCRPU37IIHLU Krab Louse

OMG!  I was thinking the same thing!  She looks short, wide with little spindly legs coming out the bottom.  It looks very odd.

And there’s something seriously lacking in the hair and makeup. OUT.

Its a nice enough dress…if you can only shop at the local mall. Celebs should be held to a higher standard. OUT

and WHAT is wrong with looking busty?!

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I know!  I try to look busty; it distracts people from looking at my stubby legs:)

        • Anonymous

My problem is that I always look busty! I have big boobs. Unless I wear a sports bra all the time, its inevitable. It used to bother me until I remembered that women are supposed to have breasts…

          • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Me too, but I’ve never considered it a problem… :P

          • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_T24URKJGBLJQPBWCRPU37IIHLU Krab Louse

I don’t know where you live but there is a shop here in London that caters for big boobs (I have to shop there) and they are experts at fitting.  I wish I would have found it back when I was younger but middle age isn’t too late because I went there and they measured me and it changed my life!  I’m not kidding.  Any woman who has been fitted by a  bra specialist who doesn’t use a tape measure will tell you it IS “life changing.”  The shop is called “Bravissimo” and apparently they do a good telephone, online service to give people the right fit – haven’t tried it myself because I live near one of their shops.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_T24URKJGBLJQPBWCRPU37IIHLU Krab Louse

Nothing when it doesn’t look “matronly” but her shape is all wonky here.

    • bookish

IN just because I think she looks cute. It is hard to put a pattern like that across the chest, though, without causing the stretch issue.

    • Anonymous

Not too bad. I’ll give her a sympathy IN.

    • Anonymous

Yeah, I love me some Lucy Liu, but not in that dress. The ballerina-in-tutu pose isn’t helping things either.

    • margaret meyers

in.  the busty thing is partially the camera.

    • Suzanne Heist

Hmm. Cute bag but I just don’t like the dress at all.

    • Anonymous

Eh, not perfection, but I’ve seen worse. Although the frock does makes her look busty, it’s still relatively demure.  I mean compare it to Serena’s tittacular ESPY dress. Plus that purse is simply fabulous. **IN**

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_T24URKJGBLJQPBWCRPU37IIHLU Krab Louse

Looking “busty” doesn’t equate to “not looking demure.”   Believe it or not, women with larger breasts aren’t anymore [insert tedious vulgar word here] than the women who are flat or have small breasts.   “Busty” here, means that her chest looks distorted and unflattering.   Wouldn’t it be great if people weren’t prejudice?

    • Judy_J

I suspect that one of the reasons Ms Liu likes this dress is just that…it makes her look busty, and gives her a nipped in waist to boot.  I think she looks good, but I do agree that a different shoe would have amped it up a couple of notches.  I give her an IN.

    • Anonymous

Unflattering dress.  The “belt” and the top.  not good.  out

I kind of like the bracelet that TLo doesn’t (not the watch band).

I must be having a very strange day, because in this particular case I actually LIKE the nude color. It seems lighter and more summery than black, more in keeping with the delicacy of the dress. But I don’t like the pump so much as I’d have liked a nude sandal.

Really, my only issue is her hair could use a little oomph, I think she looks pretty FAN-freaking-tastic!

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

      IN.

Yes, the dress is making her look busty, but why is that a bad thing?  I will grant you the shoes and the watch suck, but I like the bag.

    • Anonymous

IN. Adorably sexy.  I love her.

    • Anonymous

It’s not a total disaster or anything, but I think when she sees these photos of herself in this dress, she will probably be horrified at what it’s doing to her body, so that makes it an OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Looking busty isn’t a problem – looking like you’re busting out of your dress is.

    • Anonymous

I have to give a begrudging OUT. Luv huh but this look isn’t flattering.

    • jmoss1

      No pedicure??

      • Anonymous

SJP didn’t have one the other day, nor did Nicole Kidman in that pairs post today. Well, their feet were pedicured but not with color polish. I think this is a new trend. Maybe because of the nude shoes? If you’re doing the nude shoe to elongate the leg or whatever, having colored toenails could look mighty weird.

        • Anonymous

True, but toes can look pretty grody even with sheer polish. Last pedicure I just put on a pinkish-nude opaque color because I didn’t feel like flashy toes, but I didn’t want them to look naked, either. These toes have been looking naked and undone.

          • Anonymous

I agree. If you’re not going to do ‘color’ per se on the toes – at least put a nude or pale pink on, so they look ‘done’.

    • Christine Campbell

OUT.  As much as I want to give my freckle-faced asian sistah the in, that thick band is totally giving her a boob shelf and it is not doing her any favors where it’s hitting on her hip either.  Combined with the weird nude too heavy shoe, it’s a no.

    • Anonymous

I say in, but more like she looks fine , than she looks great.

    • Anonymous

Waist band is too think and high, and her hair looks ratty. And I am skeeved out by long toenails – I just don’t get it. We always used to trim ours to be way below the top of the toes.

    • Anonymous

IN.  Considering how beautiful she is, she should look better than this–it’s not a very flattering dress. Still, she looks good.

    • Anonymous

Busty is ok, but this just looks off- stretched out and cheap. Cute purse, boring shoes.

    • Anonymous

I actually like the dress. If it makes the boobs look big, then cheers for her.

But those shoes are atrocious. TLo is right with suggesting a black sandal.

    • Anonymous

Well, it might not be wonderful, but there’s nothing here that is so wrong so she gets an IN from me.

    • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

I don’t understand this dress.  Someone with her body should be able to wear just about anything, but this looks almost matronly .  Also, boring shoes.  Teeny tiny out.

    • Lisa

Again, not a total disaster, so I don’t see the point in an out, so it’s a kinder, gentler IN.  But it does make her look heavier than she really is.

    • Anonymous

She doesn’t need to wear such a mature-looking dress.  I hate the bag and the bangle and I loathe the shoe.  She’s wearing all of it well but it’s just not good.

its the dress & the angle of the photo – they make her look squat & wide.  and she is so clearly neither of those things.  bad dress, bad support garments, bad shoes, weak hair.  a typically stylish lady gets an OUT this time.

      IN… just couse I love her :S

TLo, I’m confused.  Lucy gets a ding because you think her boobs look like they are trying to bust out of her dress, but high marks for Nicole, whose boobs actually are busting out of her dress.  Anyway, out for me — just not liking the dress.

    • Anonymous

A simple v neckline or a necklace creating a v shape would have been so much more flattering.  Still, the look is not searing my eyes….oooo I’m so undecided!  Guess I have to go with OUT on this one.  Lucy, find a gay mirror before you step out next time.

    • Anonymous

If only that waistband was half as thick! As it is, this clearly just isn’t the dress for her, though I think it would look great on someone with a longer torso. OUT.

    • Helen C

Ugh, how about an Asian face here that is not Miss Lucy Liu?  Nothing against her, but she’s not the only Asian celebrity out there, you know.
Since you already covered two posts on the attendees of Snow Flower and Secret Fan screening, how about a post of the leading ladies themselves?

      • http://www.tomandorenzo.com Tom and Lorenzo

Since the leading ladies of the film aren’t nearly as well-known as Lucy, we’re not likely to feature them. Like it or not, we have to consider how much of a response we’re going to get when we choose who to write about. Lucy Liu in an “In or Out” is automatically going to get a far bigger response than, say, Bingbing Li or Gianna Jun.

First rule of dressing.  A high round neck collar (ie. as found in most teeshirts) will make you look busty.  A great way to create the illusion if you’re flat-chested.  If you actually have boobs (as I do) then any other neckline, V, square, scooped, boat, draped etc. will be far more flattering.  I pass this on as a public service.  It took me YEARS to work out why normal teeshirts made me look so fat.
