In or Out: Kelly Rowland in Emma Griffiths

Posted on July 27, 2011

Miss Kelly always gives us something to talk about, bless her.

Kelly Rowland visits BET’s “106 & Park” in New York City in an Emma Griffiths dress paired with Christian Dior shoes; cuff by Vionnet and earrings and ring by Simone Smith.

Emma Griffiths Spring 2011 Collection/Christian Dior Fall 2011 Collection

Okay, first things first: It looks like the original version of this dress is sheer and we thank Miss Kelly for not going that route. We also think choosing a version with the blocking in white fabric instead of black leather was a good choice; especially for a television appearance, where bold graphics rule the day. It’s an interesting, head-turning design and we appreciate that the blocking is crudely done, with slightly irregular shapes. We don’t appreciate that it’s quite so tight and quite so short. Miss Kelly has a slammin’ bod, but her thighs are straining mightily against this thing. And finally, the hair’s just a bit much and the shoes, while kickass in their own right, are too heavy for this look. We’re all over the map on this one.

VOTE NOW!

IN! She looks bold, sexy and FIERCE!
OUT! She looks like a perfume bottle with a wig on it!

Here are yesterday’s Minion Opinions:

Daniel Craig’s Eastern European mobster drag got an IN from fangirls voting with their loins again. Seriously, ladies: you give the men WAY too much legroom while the starlets get voted OUT for not having a pedicure.

Olivia Wilde’s “widow of the prairies” getup got a T Lo-approved OUT.

Besides the (maybe pink) shoes, I love this look and I want this dress in my closet asap. IN.

  • Anonymous

I looooove the dress, hate the shoes.  Hair too long.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MNMVM2GPVUEIOJXBOSLCXKAW4U judy brown

Suddenly I sound like my father when I was a teenager: “Get that hair out of your eyes, young lady!”

I’ve noticed it’s a thing with the kids again, bangs that go below the eyebrow ,but it can’t be great for either vision — or on TV where the point is to see your face, honey.

I’d also would have liked it if her hairr was up, and not covering the design or the dress.

That dress is pretty fabulous… and while tight as hell, that’s to be expected. IN

All I can think of is “Spiderman, Spiderman, does whatever a spider can.’  The shoes don’t go, the hair is just too much.

    Out.

    • http://twitter.com/hmbscully Wendy

Completely agree. It’s like a rejected Spiderman logo on a dress. OUT.

    • Jennifer Coleman

Definitely spiderman logo as drawn by a 9 year old, but it works somewhat better black leather on sheer. The nude-on-white-skin shoes are ill advised. Hair is overwhelming yet generic. OUT

    • Anonymous

Just coming here to say the same. OUT.

    • Anonymous

Yes, I immediately got a bug vibe too.  Also, she still gives me flashbacks to the first season of The Fashion Show. I need a bit  more time until I can move on and even consider giving her an ‘in.’

    • Erin Bollinger

      It reminds me of Transformers.

      • http://twitter.com/amirobyn Ami Robyn

It must be a Rorschach inkblot test in a dress – I see Transformers too! :)

    • http://pleasewelcomeyourjudges.com/ Brian @ PWYJudges

I thought the same thing! Totally a Spiderman look. OUT!

    • Jaclyn Murphy

Was definitely just going to ask if anyone else noticed that. That was the only thing I liked about the sheer version: the blocking looked distinctly less like some kind of knock-off Spiderman villainess. Out!

    • Anonymous

Same here.  Couldn’t see anything but a spider.  Hate the shoes, hair looks like way too much.  OUT.

    • http://twitter.com/CheriCPat Cheri Patrick

If I click “like” on someone’s post who voted for OUT, does that count as a vote for OUT?  ‘Cause I like this post, think it’s an OUT, and am too lazy to type all of this if I don’t have to.

    • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

Spiderman was my first thought too. Spiderman perfume is an OUT, with or without the wig.

  • Valerie Owens

Hahaha! Perfume bottle with a wig! Priceless! Go easy on the girl’s thighs though – I think a bigger dress wouldn’t have fit right. IN

    • Anonymous

Exactly, because she does look like a perfume bottle with a wig, she’s OUT.

  • http://twitter.com/DresswithAplomb Aplomb Pomilio

    ugh.

While I love the dress, I wish I could get the vision of perfume bottle out of my head. Thanks TLo.  Still, I love the girl. In.

  • http://twitter.com/asciident Melissa Della

IN…barely. It is too tight, but if it was half a size bigger from the waist down it’d be perfect on her. Not in favor of those shoes, but they aren’t repellent.

  • Anonymous

Does nobody else look at the colour blocking on this dress and have slightly rude images come to mind?  I must be a bad, bad person, but I have to give an “out” to any dress that makes me have gynecological thoughts.

    • Anonymous

Oh MAN I hadn’t noticed that till you made the connection for me.  Its like some lego block version of lady bits.  I knew there was something making me a bit uneasy about the look.  Apart form the way too much hair thing.  Though I actually love the shoes, just not with this dress. Oh and I have to say OUT for TLo’s record keeping purposes

totally. To me the dress screams, VAGINA

    • Anonymous

I was really confused on this because when I saw it, I first thought ‘vagina’ then immediately thought ‘spiderman logo’. I kept going back and forth between the two. Either way, I don’t like the spiderman/vagina dress…. OUT!

I had the exact same thoughts.  I’m so glad it wasn’t just me!  Definitely out!

No, I definitely see it too.

  • Anonymous

    Out.

I can’t get past the bug (spider?) on her dress.

  • http://bfish.myopenid.com/ bfish

It looks like the Spiderman logo…or rather, like a dress version of Venom. Sorry can’t un-see it.

    • Anonymous

Yep, first thing I thought when I saw this was, “Is she crossplaying as sexy Venom?”

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3NXBVKLOMNGCAVCVXOVWDGD3SE Marissa

I prefer the dress in black, but I think she looks cute! I think shorter hair may work better on her though, the long hair makes it seem like she’s trying really hard to look younger. IN

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

OUT.  There is something so suggestive about that white leather looking like a coat of armor over her va-jay-jay.  And the shoes don’t go.  Period.  But the shoes, the shoes are DIVINE.

  • Anonymous

All of your critiques are what I thought when I looked at it. Great bold pattern, grateful it’s not sheer, very striking and sexy. BUT hate the hair (hate!), the shoes are too big and clunky with that dress (but that seems to be the thing now, doesn’t it) and the dress is too short and tight.

But overall, this is an IN.

  • Aly Light

I think it’s a cute, graphic dress, and that’s really the center of the look. The shoes aren’t perfect, but I don’t think they’re egregeious, and while I hate that weave, I don’t think it totally overpowers the look. IN.

  • Anonymous

Out. The pieces on their own are kinda fierce (minus the hair)… But all together, it’s too much look.

  • Anonymous

I give Miss Rowland a big IN!  Though this outfit is not perfect in and of itself, it is perfect for a TV apperance on BET or MTV or VH1.  Right outfit for right occasion.

    Love the shoes!

    • Anonymous

You make excellent points. I was on the fence, but now I have to give her an IN. Haaaate the shoes though.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=513945580 Megan Patterson

Like the dress, hate the shoes.

  • http://twitter.com/Hussified Coleen D. Wybranski

I’m giving the overall look an OUT, even though I love the dress’ design. It’s too short and tight, her hair is too long and messy (would have preferred a sleek ponytail), and the shoes are competing against the dress, not complementing it.

  • Katie Benner

The dress is fabulous enough for me to (at least try to) ignore the poor shoe choice.  IN.

  • Jessica Goldstein

Oh, IN. I agree about the hair, shoes, and fit. But I can’t help but look at her and think she looks great and that the dress is really interesting.

  • Anonymous

OUT.  Too many buts about the whole look.

  • Anonymous

I appreciate the bold graphic design on the dress, but no woman wants to wear a graphic with an arrow-like design element hitting at her hips (ok, I can’t seem to say this correctly but I hope you know what I mean). The widest part of the design goes across her hips–I think it really emphasizes her hips/thighs in an unflattering way. The hair is crazy, as are the shoes. OUT.

And now I’m seeing spiders and perfume bottles all over the dress. It’s a perfume bottle with a spider design!

  • Anonymous

I like the dress, but I think the look would have been improved tremendously if she had put her hair (or her wig) in a ponytail or in a really cool updo instead of the flowing locks. Frankly, it wouldn’t have killed her to go up a size on the dress, either. The shoes are ugly. OUT

I love it. The dress is sexy and eyecatching, and I don’t think it would look right sized up. Love the shoes though they’re competing for attention. I’m not mad at her hair. IN.

  • narita_rayna

i like everything *but* the dress.  the pattern in the white just looks too chunky & weird on her. i wish it followed her natural curves more.  as is, it’s awkward & misshapen.

  • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

the shoes are absolutely gorgeous but somehow they dont work w/ this dress. i can see where she’s going w/ all of this as an ensemble –the geometry w/ the geometries– but, while she may be going there, she doesnt get there. if i make sense.

also, she looks like she’s wearing a cream black widow spider. that -cant- work. the more i think about it, the more i think that the dress is just mildly rotten. not in an over the top ginnifer goodwin sort of way, just mildly, but still.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Richard-Harris/729969026 Richard Harris

That graphic seriously hates her body…

  • Liana Brooks

OUT – All I see are hideous pointy hip bones.

  • MilaXX

I give this a small IN, I like the shoes with the dress. I’m deducting for the tightnessness of the dress. I know hoochie rules the day on 106th & Park, but I expect more from Kelly. No issues with hair/makeup.

  • Anonymous

Cute.  On anyone who wasn’t stick thin it would be a disaster.  Good thing Miss Kelly is.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_DO54ICWQLRD2STHRSELEATLSKY Cindy

Maybe she came straight from Comic-Con and inexplicably had no time to change on the flight back?     Very Superhero /comics get up there.  I’m thankful it isn’t the black on black– that would be too Catwoman.   Hair is a little crazy and the dress is too tight/short, but seriously it could have been much much worse.

OUT. The black version looks like a cycling outfit but the b&w looks arachnidic (just made up a word, can you tell?). Hate the shoes. Unless I’m sporting some killer boots, I want my feet to be at least semi-delicate. Yeah, and the hair. I really dislike the entire look, frankly.

  • Anonymous

Love the dress, hate the shoes, still gonna vote IN.

  • Anonymous

Skirt too short  – especially with those shoes.  I don’t love the dress.   I kind of would like it in the black – but that huge amount of sheer fabric,  especially on the skirt, ruins it.

  • Anonymous

This one is tough. Don’t like the dress on the runway, but with the changes Kelly made, I do like it. And from the front, it looks good, and as TLo mentioned, it has a great TV look. But from the side?  Yeesh!  I don’t want to see this dress from the back. Too tight and too short. Like the shoes, but not with this dress. And I wish someone would tell her that just because you can afford a headful of extensions doesn’t mean you should wear them all at once.

And yet…There’s something about her and the total look that defies all these nitpicks. Maybe it’s the fact that she’s a gorgeous woman with fabulous posture and a lot of confidence.

    Squeaking by with an IN.

  • Anonymous

Might like the hair if it weren’t in her face so much. Not a fan of the design on the dress. Reminds me of a spider and the shoes someone go with that theme. It also just doesn’t flatter her much at all. OUT.

  • Anonymous

oh and the dress looks too bug like.  First thing that popped into my head was the Black Widow dress MO wore

  • Grace Ritt

In. Love the dress and the shoes, and isn’t she kind of a diva? She can.

  • Anonymous

Everything from the knee up looks fine, although a bit tight. Shoes are not working with the dress at all! Still an IN because the shoes are hot on their own.

  • carolie_king

She’s pretty durn close.  I would forgive the tight/short if she didn’t have those crazy hair extensions and bangs in her eyes.  And her lipstick shade is off.  OUT.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_N3GA2TTX752OYSKBWWXQVFM2HI katie

I LOVE that dress, and don’t mind the hair but I hate those shoes with a passion. IN, but just barely.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.parker Sara Parker

My only real objection is the poor fit, but since I like the look overall, I’ll give her a pass.  In.

  • aussiegal77

I can’t handle the wig, it’s too much for me.  The shoes are a hot mess, terrible and weighs down the entire look, literally.  I love the dress but you’re right, it’s too tight.  Sorry, this is an OUT from me.

  • Anonymous

Honestly it looks like she wants to show off her va-jj because that is what the print looks like to me, and I am gay. Otherwise it is a decent dress and she looks good her. I will give her in between the door, neither an In or an Out.

  • Anonymous

Out, I’m afraid — too much hair, too much shoe, and she can’t sit down.

  • Anonymous

LOVE the shoes, god they’re killer.  i like the dress much better with the black on black blocking.

  • Anonymous

Eehhh… not sure how to vote. I sort of dig the dress, but it is far too short and tight on her. I don’t mind short when it is well deployed, but this just looks ill fitting. You know, not short intentionally, but short b/c it is riding up on her. Make up looks great. Like the lip color on her a lot. Way too much hair in the face and obscuring the dress. Needed a sleeker ‘do for that dress.

Okay, looks like I’ve talked myself into an Out. could have been an in with just a few tweaks, though.

  • Anonymous

I have my slight grievances (I am a picky bitch) but overall IN. I like.

  • Terence Ng

The leather irregularity is bothering me. It’s clearly intended to be symmetrical. Having the pieces almost be the same makes it look like someone tried and did a bad job, not that it was an intentional meta-symmetry design. Maybe the original version is just the same, but with the contrasting colors, it’s more apparent.

    OUT.

  • Judy_J

She really DOES look like a perfume bottle with a wig on it!  That dress is just too short and too tight.  OUT.

  • http://twitter.com/warontara Tara

For the shoes alone, she gets an OUT.

  • http://www.facebook.com/WendyLKaufman Wendy Kaufman

Sorry, this time I say it’s an out. It looks like either she’s framed her uterus, or she’s an alien on an old episode of Star Trek. Shoes WAY too big and heavy. This dress is better with a more subdued color for the graphic. Maybe a dark grey–closer to the original version–which is better though I do agree on her choice for an opaque dress in this venue.

If this were monotone, like the model’s wearing, in pretty much any shade, I could vote in. Two-tone, it’s ugly. Out.

  • lilibetp

If it were a bit longer, maybe it wouldn’t look like the graphic was pointing straight at her crotch…

Love the dress, like the shoes (though I would’ve rather seen them in a bright blue or green), eh on the hair, and… is that a single giant hoop earring? On the same side as the heavy bracelet, no less. Oh hon, pirate chic is not for you. In the end, my fondness for the dress overwhelms that misstep. I give her a not entirely enthusiastic IN.

  • Tim Wong

love the dress… but with such a symmetrical graphic… her posture need to be perfect inorder to pull it off… the pose- one leg infront of the other just makes the dress looks like one side is bigger than the other…
also with such an edgy dress…. red carpet-waves just don’t work… maybe pull it back in a ponytail?…
the shoes… love them… but she clearly can’t stand in them… cause they look like she is on a balancing beam….

Overall IN. Shoes are too heavy, but viewed straight on they echo the geometry of the pattern on the dress. Which is, indeed, just a smidge too tight and a smidge and a half too short, even for a standing-only t.v. appearance. Too much hair, but if I weren’t bitching about the other stuff I’d have let it pass.

Yeah, I’m getting really sick of reading all the pedicure bitching (especially when sometimes it looks like they may have polish, but the photos are not exactly hi-def enough to tell if it’s just a nude colored polish).
IN, if only because she looks like she should be fighting crime as the next Spiderwoman and I love me some super-heroine drag. Which justifies the shoes (which make her feet look big and sort of cartoony) because she could kick someone’s ass with them.
But if I read another person judging someone’s toenails from photos, I may need to call in Spiderwoman to smack a bitch.

Yeah, not loving this dress at all.  I like a bold graphic but this has “spider” or “super hero” all over it.  And it is way too short and tight.  On or the other works, not both.  As to the hair, she is what I call a “plan ahead girl”.  “I’ll just wear next months extensions along with todays and then I’ll be ready”  TOO MUCH!!

I love the shoes, not with all this but I love them.

  • Anonymous

I think she looks amazing. That dress is so fantastic, definitely better with the white graphic. Hell, I even love the shoes. IN.

  • Anonymous

IN.  Love the dress on her, but hate the hair.  She looks like a sheepdog.  She can’t even see past those bangs.

  • Anonymous

IN- I love everything about this look, with exception of the fit. It would be a WERQ, it were size up.

  • Kate Lorenz

Love the dress, love the hair, hate the shoes.

  • Anonymous

Out. The only thing I take issue with is the shoe selection. Hate them. But, when I think of the same shoe in black with this dress, it makes it look so much better.

  • http://twitter.com/qrter Alexander Peterhans

The Spider-Man insignia and the horrible shoes make this an OUT.

  • Anonymous

I actually like most of her choices here, especially the way she customized the dress to fit her and the occasion’s needs. It is a skosh tight, but not terribly so. IN.

  • sonictofu

    two words: crotch arrow.  out.

  • Anonymous

first impulse was to agree with the bold and fierce comment, but the more I look at it, the less I like the dress (and the fit).  But I will stick with IN for the overall look.

    • margaret meyers

The longer you look at it the less you like it.

  • AWStevens

Kiss of the Spider Woman? Nice weave? Sexxy clunky shoes? All NOT! OoooooUuuuuT!

    Another framed vagina.  Yawn.

Made me think of those skeleton Halloween costumes with the white bones on a pair of black pajamas.

Just like Kelly, I can’t see past the hair. Out.

I think it looks like there is a vagina on her dress. Out.

    IN – Graphic and strong.

  • margaret meyers

    Meh.

  • Mariah J

I agree, thank you for not going the sheer route. Super chic, totally IN

  • Anonymous

    A firm OUT.

  • Anonymous

    Perfume bottle with hair. Totes.

  • Anonymous

Too many graphics on her vagina.  Out.

  • Anonymous

I think she looks cute and appropriate for a TV appearance. The shoes seem kind of random, but, IN.

  • Anonymous

I liked the impact of this at first, but on closer inspection, I’m gonna give it an OUT. There’s some potential, but the shoes look hiddy with the dress, which is questionable in and of itself. I actually prefer the original black on black version (minus the sheer aspect). This one is just too jarring and while I love a bold graphic, the contrast calls too much attention to the strangeness of the shapes (maybe this would be mitigated if it weren’t so tight). Regardless, I think I could get past it all if it weren’t for that HAIR. Why????  All I can see is cocker spaniel. It’s bad. Her bod does indeed look great, though!

  • Sharon Weissburg

    FABULOUS! IN!

  • Lisa

Very much IN, and I like the shoes!

while some see vagina, i see a rather well endowed man doing the frog kick….or an ancient fertility god clay artifact

OUT.  The color blocking looks like some kind of spider logo.

    IN!!! love it

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Love the dress.  The white leather is the better choice for television, but I’d prefer the non sheer dress with black leather.  The shoes are cool, but they don’t work with the dress, but still, she’s IN like Flynn.

  • Warmheartedgirl Seattle

She’s a very pretty girl.  I like the dress, dislike the shoes.  Too heavy for that dress.  Hair and makeup look fine.  I’d give her an IN.

Put the genie back in the bottle and cork it back up, missy! Too many little wrongs=Out.

I’m actually not even offended with the length. That’s new.
The dress is cute; the revisions to the original are just right.
And I agree about the shoes – they’re not right with the dress, even if they are killer.
Only thing that truly offends me is the hair/extensions/wig
    So overall, IN.

    OUT.

Oddly enough, I think I’m gonna go with IN on this one. I like it for some reason.

Please no dresses with huge white spiders on them.  Or big ugly shoes.  OUT.

Leaning toward IN for Spider Girl. Hate those shoes though.

  • Anonymous

Thumbs up but agree about the shoes not going with the dress but I can live with it.

IN I think it looks super cute.

  • Ted Kane

I think the overall effect is pretty great, so IN.

  • http://summerborn.livejournal.com/ Summer Born

OUT – her dress is doing a ‘high-and-tight’ and it’s totally inappropriate.

  • http://twitter.com/Unclassical Alexandria N

B-. that’s an IN. T-Lo’s right on. It’s a really great dress and the accutrumonts are good but not spot on. fab shoes, but not with this. Fab hair, but not quite right with the dress. this is typical for her. mostly right, but never hits it out of the park. i will say this though, someone on her team understands her shape- she never wears anything unflattering.

  • http://twitter.com/verascity Vera Sticker

Love everything but the shoes, think she looks gorgeous. IN.

  • http://twitter.com/wrenaria Kimmy Hescock

    Out.

  • Anonymous

Love the dress: that is one graphic pattern! The make-up is great, the hair is not-too-horrifying if a bit long, and the shoes are a no. Still, overall an IN for me. Plus, she accessorised! We haven’t seen accessories in a while.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OYWH5NAGE3TS2MWXRAVBSWBSZA Brittany

In – enough’s going well to not be called out.

She is not attractive.  Period.  End of story.  OUT.

That dress is so Cyberdog circa 1995.

  • Anonymous

I can see where they were trying to echo the graphic of the dress with the strappage of the shoes, but they are just too heavy–once again, idea and execution are not coordinated.  And it IS too short, and too tight, and her hair DOES look lousy.  But oddly–somehow, this look kinda seems OK to me.  I’m going to say IN—but I don’t really know why.

  • Anonymous

Ehhh. OUT. But only just. I don’t actually mind the whole Spiderman logo bit, but to be honest, I liked it better with the black leather panels (though not the sheer parts….that’s a bit too much). I do still like it with the white, though. But this dress is far too small, and I really don’t like the hair. And while the shoes are absolutely gorgeous, they SO do not go with this dress. So much so that it’s almost hurting me. If they were in white, I would have given her an in. But in nude? I can’t….I just can’t.

IN. luvv the dress, luvv the hair. dress could be a little longer, but that’s how the kids wear ‘em these days I hear.
