In or Out: Hilary Swank in Tory Burch

Posted on July 15, 2011

Hilary Swank goes for the perfect mid-summer look and we have opinions about it. Try not to look shocked.

Hilary Swank attends the 2011 Giffoni Experience Photocall in Giffoni Valle Piana, Italy in head-to-toe Tory Burch.

Tory Burch Isobel Cotton Silk Lawn Dress

Tory Burch Tarlen Wedge

Those shoes look like something the Professor whipped up for Ginger after she complained about packing 25 pairs of pumps but no wedges. Believe it or not, that’s a compliment. We’re not entirely convinced they’re the best choice to pair with that dress, though. The eyes can’t help but go straight down when you look at her.  Still, that’s a very cute dress on her and it’s nice to see her in a softer look. Hate the hair, though. She would have looked so cute with a sleek pony tail here. We’re kind of irritated about the complete lack of jewelry, too. Come on, honey; you’re wearing 300 dollar shoes and a 400 dollar dress. The jig is up. Slap on a bangle or something for punctuation.

VOTE NOW!

IN! Easy, breezy summer chic!

OUT! She looks half-assed. And what the hell does “breezy” mean, anyway?

The Minion Opinion on Lucy Liu’s bustical illusion dress was split, but ultimately came down on the OUT side.

I love this look. It’s fresh, clean, and easy. And I love those shoes. IN

    The hair, ugh!

  • Anonymous

She gets an Out for the whole thing looking rather cheap. The shoes say Payless (which isn’t that bad. I like payless and I love the shoes) but the dress looks like something you could pick up on the $12-$15 rack at walmart.

    • http://twitter.com/CheriCPat Cheri Patrick

My first thought was “cheap” too.  Not cheap as in tacky, cheap as in Sears.  A cute Sears dress, my secretary should wear it to work.  But for Hillary Swank to wear anywhere?  Out.

  • Anonymous

I also don’t like her hair, but the lack of jewelry doesn’t bother me.  Cute dress, cute shoes.  She looks fine for Italy in the summer.  IN

  • Anonymous

IN. Your criticisms are accurate but she looks good. Pretty sure looking good is the point.

  • Anonymous

I don’t think that dress is all that cute. Add in some clunky fussy shoes that really clash and you got an **OUT** from me!

  • Kyle Henry

Completely agree with everything said.  I give it an IN because the Swanky Hills didn’t come out.

    • Artis Diggins

      ‘Swanky Hills’ is genius

  • http://profiles.google.com/mercbubble42 Jessica O’Connell

Shoes look way too heavy for a the light, breezey, summer look that I’m sure she was going for… OUT

  • Anonymous

Cute dress, though I’d like it better in another color; that’s a whole lotta yellow. But more IN than out.

    • Anonymous

Agree.  I  can’t wait for yellow to be ‘out’ again, mostly because I look horrible in it!

  • Anonymous

I hate the shoes but that’s a really cute summer dress and it looks nice on her.  She needs a serious trim for those ratty-looking ends.

  • Anonymous

I like the dress, I agree about the hair and (lack of) jewelry, and the shoes are hideous. A marginal OUT for me.

I really don’t get the lack of jewelry trend these days. If I was as rich as these ladies you bet your ass I’d be decked out in fabulous jewelry every time I had an event to go to.

  • http://profiles.google.com/adj.blair Adriana Blair

She looks so pretty here! Who puts effort into their hair or jewelry when it is so hot out…I can’t fault her for that. IN.

    • MilaXX

I ever leave the house without earrings.

      • Anonymous

Me too. I’ve had my ears pierced since I was three days old. It would be like leaving the house without my arms.

    • Anonymous

Well, sumertime is when we usually pull our hair back into a ponytail to get it off our necks. It would have been the perfect solution here to hide the fact that she missed her last hair appointment. Tie it back, smooth a little finishing oil on those ends and voila! What split ends?

  • Anonymous

I really don’t like the shoes, but that dress is perfect on her.  I’m going with IN.

  • Vaniljekjeks

In, but she really needed some accessories.

  • MilaXX

IN she looks cute, the hair and jewelry, which I agree with you on BTW, are minor quibbles.

  • Christine Campbell

Oy.  Why are they doing this to us????  As I scanned down the length of her, my reaction was, “lovely…ACK! Ok, lovely….ACK!” meaning: hair/face/smile – pretty til the fried out freaky ends.  Dress/posture/pose – lovely, relaxed til I got down to the shoes at which point I was concerned she was weighted down to the floor and would be posing there until the event was over.  Oh Hilary.  So close.  OUT.

  • Anonymous

Out. The hair ruins it. And she’s worn it that way for ages as though it’s the best accessory she’s got going.

  • Anonymous

    NO

  • https://profiles.google.com/104791269167429064986 Judy S

IN. I don’t care for the shoes but that’s OK because I don’t like most shoes celebrities wear. I like the espadrille suggestion of them with the dress, though. And she looks wonderful in the dress.

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

Split decision…love the dress, hate the shoes, no opinion on the hair.  Apparently, I’m becoming inured to the sight of celebrities with boring ‘dos.

  • http://pleasewelcomeyourjudges.com/ Brian @ PWYJudges

It’s a great start… but it looks like she’s still getting ready to leave. Needs those finishing touches! Still… IN for a solid foundation.

  • Jennifer Hofstetter

Over all she looks great.  Hate the shoes.  IN.

  • Anonymous

    It’s not sending me… Out!

  • Anonymous

I have to give an OUT here.  I agree with you guys completely on this: the hair was wrong, and it needed some accessories.  If she’d done something with her hair, and added a little necklace, it would have been an IN.  So, so close, and yet so far.

  • Anonymous

OUT. Those shoes (which could be great) don’t match the dress and just look too clunky.

  • Anonymous

For heading to the Mall – a big in.  For an actual event, not enough effort.  OUT

    • Anonymous

Agree! That dress is super-plain and fine for a casual outing. But, it costs HOW MUCH?!?!?

  • Anonymous

IN. Sure it’s a Crayola outfit, but she looks cute, cool and comfortable (and definitely needs a new do). I like that pop of red.

  • narita_rayna

yeah, for heavy shoes like that, youd have to knock off a couple inches on the hem of the skirt to balance out the proportions.  and that hair is worthless. the dress though, cute. i just wish she had pulled all the other elements together. so close. but still an OUT.

  • Judy_J

Cute dress, cute shoes but they do not make up for the lack of hair/makeup/accessories.  Gotta say OUT.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

Nice dress but seems just a little short in the waist for her. I agree with you on the shoes- they’re sweet but pull too much of the focus.

  • Anonymous

Out.  This is a look for a friend’s party, not a public event.  The hair, especially, sins.

  • aussiegal77

Lovely dress but the accessory choices ruined it.  Bad hair, wrong shoes and no jewelry means regrettably, this is an OUT.  But I do LOVE that dress.

  • http://aintbaroque.wordpress.com/ Ain’t Baroque

Heart the shoes, like the dress, completely agree on the hair — shoulda been up. I guess 2/3 means IN.

  • Anonymous

IN. Despite the hair. Love the dress, love the shoes, love the whole look!

  • Anonymous

    In.

  • Anonymous

This one is hard.  Hate the hair–what IS it with mature women who still think they have the tresses of a teenager?–but the dress is really cute. Totally agree that it needs some punching up with a bracelet or something, and the shoes, while not bad, really do detract from the dress.  It’s sort of an unexpected look from her for me.  I like it that she’s experimenting.  Of course, not all experiments are successful……sadly, OUT.

  • aimee_parrott

IN.  Agreed re: the hair, and the shoes are all wrong with the dress.  But she looks fresh and pretty and it’s a great color on her.

  • Anonymous

Love the dress, love the shoes, and think they look good together.
But her hair! She’s in desperate need of a good trim. Two inches off the ends and a deep moisturizing treatment.

Why are all these people running around with ratty looking hair all of a sudden? Is that going to be the new thing?

  • Anonymous

much prefer the flats in the runway shot. Terrific shoes but not with this dress.

  • Anonymous

IN.  Agree with your critiques–it’s good but not great.  I kind of love that color yellow paired with red shoes, though.

  • Courtney Brown

    In –  she looks ok

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=6416893 Jenna Kuhmann

I think she looks cute, but the shoes nearly ruin it.  They definitely don’t go with that dress.  Marginal IN.

  • Anonymous

OUT!  The shoes and lack of jewelry ruin the look.

  • Anonymous

I think she looks lovely, for once. In.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002173039987 Deb B-Rocker

IN, BUT………… although the shoes are cute, they would’ve been better with a nautical capri outfit (white capris, navy and something top).  You’re right, jewelry would’ve helped, and I’m thinking TURQUOISE in a gold setting. Yellow and summery blue??? Naturally!

  • Anonymous

IN! Love the look and the shoes are so fancy they might count as an accessory, too.

  • Anonymous

Too mismatched, and her hair/make-up look a little post workout. OUT

  • Anonymous

I like the dress, but she doesn’t look like she tried very hard otherwise.  I hate the shoes…look like something that came off the wall of Captain D’s circa 1985.  OUT.

  • Jessica Goldstein

IN. I don’t love the shoes with the dress, and I agree on the hair. But this is an easy, breezy, ladylike look on someone who usually looks harsh and on occasion downright cheap. She wore something softer a few weeks ago and looked similarly pretty. I hope it’s a new trend. I might be grading on a curve (slightly), but I think this is in.

  • Anonymous

I love the dress.  I love the shoes, but they may be a bit too heavy for a light summer dress.  But at least they are sandals, not platforms.  I think she was trying for the wind-blown, ‘just got here from a day at the beach’ look with the hair, but it failed.  It’s not horrible, but it’s not great.

Still gotta go with IN on this one.

  • Anonymous

IN.  I love that dress on her, the shoes are fabulous and really, if not a simple dress, what would you wear these with.  Maybe peg leg jeans?  The hair is not good but I give her a break on accessories.  When it is hot and steamy out, I can’t stand having jewelry on of any knid.  No watches, cuffs, rings, it all seems irritaing in the heat.

  • Ted Kane

I like the dress a lot, and I think the lack of jewelry is refreshing and appropriate for summer.  But the shoes are wrong for the dress, and I think they’re somehow making her knees look bad.  Also, that hair.  I think with different shoes OR the hair pulled back, it’s a clear IN.  I can’t go with out because she doesn’t really look bad here, so I’m going to have to abstain.

  • Anonymous

IN.  The dress is perfect and I-want-those-shoes-now!   The simplicity of the dress can handle the ZOWIE-ness of the footwear

  • Joyce VG

IN.  I love the dress and the shoes are insane but in a good way.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I do not like the hair. But the girls are strapped in, so she gets credit for that. She rates an “in”. That’s a meek “IN”. But In nonetheless.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_AYQCICXEN2CCDBFV5HED4Z2RUA Dee B

If I find it boring should i call it an in?  She’s not really out, but…Zzzzzzzzzzz.  Fine.  In.

  • Anonymous

Meh. She looks good, for grocery shopping not a photo op. Out.

  • Jillian Kroos

I give her an In, even if I don’t like the shoes. Those shoes are meant for shorts.

I love it. Unadorned summer, the sunlight in the dress. And killer shoes.

I say she’s In. I think she would have been better off with a light sandal like the model is wearing, but I still think she looks great.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Katherine-Lavender/553350310 Katherine Lavender

    Pah. Out.

  • Sara__B

IN, even with those heavy heavy shoes. That dress is perfect for a beautiful summer day.

  • bookish

IN just because the dress is so cute. I want it (or an affordable version, I guess). The hair is pretty bad, though.

  • http://www.manoneileen.com Manon Eileen

In! I love the look, even if I agree these aren’t the best shoes to wear with that dress – however, I think they are absolutely awesome. The hair and jewelry clearly lacks, though. Still, great colors, that alone deserves an in.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

IN! Only because the dress is so cute.  At first glance at the shoes I only saw the red and thought…oh that is a cute combo, then I SAW the shoes and thought…oh dear, what a mess.  I think she shoe is to heavy for the dress.

  • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

I think she looks good, even with the awkward shoes, but she needs to cut that hair.  Pulling it back just says “My jaw cuts glass,” and a limp, fried ponytail isn’t really an improvement from limp, fried loose hair.

  • Robert Sanchez

Dress is adorable, but yeah, those shoes make her feet look like giant cavewoman paws. Her hair is limp and ugly. More OUT than IN for me.

  • Anonymous

I think she looks cute.  A bangle would def help – but I think the basics make this look ‘in’… and some more accessorizes would have upgraded it to “IN”.

  • Anonymous

In. But a close one, I think the shoes are too heavy. Or maybe just make too much of a visual impact.

  • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

    Ugh, out.

  • Anonymous

I agree with all of the TLo points here – shoes too heavy, needs a simple accesssory, and the hair should be back – but the dress is so damned cute, and she looks so comfy/happy, I give it an IN.

  • Anonymous

IN!  Easy, Breezy, and all that!

  • Anonymous

In. She looks really cute, though I agree a ponytail would have been better. I also think some kind of statement jewelry up around her face in a contrasting color would have helped balance out those shoes. But overall I like it!

I love the shoes, and I love the color of the dress, since I’m a sucker for yellow. Other than that- blah. Her hair looks like she washed it and then said “i’m done.” The style of the dress is a little…young. The front panels kind of remind me of a kiddie sundress.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=566983224 Erin Leahy

Not sure why, (maybe I just don’t like the dress) but imma have to say out!

  • oohsparkley!

    In.  Shoes are center stage.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6PUVFQ7YCZZFZRIER6BEJ4HVYE Amye

Shoes completely ruin it.  This is another dress that called for a sandal.

They make her look like she’s on stilts and draw the eye down and away from the pretty dress & pretty smile.

    OUT as well.

  • Anonymous

When I see Hillary Swank:In or Out, I automatically default to OUT because girlfriend has no sense of style, and she lived up to that expectation here. Nice dress but she cannot finish a look. Crappy hair, meh shoes. It also doesn’t help that she does nothing for me as an actress, and I don’t think she’s pretty at all. She has a rockin bod and a face to protect it.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sntierney Shannon Tierney

In, except the shoes.  They are too much. She could have added tiny delicate earrings, but the flowy hair and bright dress are enough.

I really like this dress, but Hill doesn’t know how to stand up straight & sell this look.  Icky shoes – way too heavy for this fun dress…especially when it’s the only accessory!  Out.

  • Anonymous

Cute dress. She looks adorable and happy. I agree that the shoes, while lovely on their own, are too heavy for the dress…although they’re better than the shoes the model is sporting. Overall, heavy shoes and desperate need for a haircut aren’t enough to derail the entire look. IN.

  • Anonymous

The pleats say ‘delicate’; the shoes say ‘chunky.’ I totally agree this look would have been made with a sleek ponytail, and I would have changed to a more delicate sandal or maybe a patent navy open-toe wedge, with no rope thing going on. Also, yes to a bangle.

Sigh. I so wish you two could help style me!! I’m such a fan.

  • Anonymous

Everything you said. Really don’t like the hair and makeup.
    OUT.

  • http://foodandwinehedonist.wordpress.com/ thefoodandwinehedonist

Easy, breezy = didn’t give a crap about what she wore.  She looks like a midwestern housewife (no offense to midwestern housewives).  Hair looks unwashed.  Dress is looks like it’s from JC Penney.  And it’s not flattering – she has one of the best bodies around, and she looks dumpy here.

  • Anonymous

Out.  Just do not like the dress.  The pleated top is distracting.  The color on her does nothing for her.  The shoes look ridiculous.

  • http://profiles.google.com/katherinempg Katherine Pisarro-Grant

Yikes. This outfit is a clunker. The dress is completely uninspired and the shoes are clunky. It would be cute on a young girl, but it totally falls flat here. And I agree about the ponytail being a better look for her. OUT!

The Tory Burch model wears it with these shoes…I guess she just took the look out of the lookbook?

Out! OMG, she was looking so good…until I saw her feet! What is this?! The shoes would be fab with another outfit, but it completely distracts from her dress. It’s a cute and very sweet dress in a very cheerful shade of yellow. It’s a demure dress. Something more sleek would have looked so much better, preferably without a platform. Even normal espadrilles would look so much better.

also, that hair. She’s not even trying with the hair, is she?

  • King Dex

Dress is cute, so are the shoes, and especially her smile – agree that a bangle on the wrist would have helped. Maybe something chunky like the shoes to help them make more sense with the dress. Adding another island accessory would also have made her wild and free mane more relevant….

Something about that shade of yellow. I actually don’t think it suits her skin tone very well. The shoes should be burned.

Lovely dress but she needs a good blunt hair cut and some conditioning to deal with those ends. Maybe a watch or a bangle or something? In, with reservations.

OUT. You could buy a dress like like that for $30 at any department store, and I think it looks like a little girl’s dress.  The shoes, I hate.

okay, kind of love those shoes.  should say though that the shoes are paired with the dress on the TB website (here: http://www.toryburch.com/Isobel-Dress/21111401,default,pd.html) which is a little uncreative.  Plus, it looks better with the belt/earrings in my opinion. That said, an out might be a little harsh, so …. in.

OUT. The shoes are waaay too heavy for the dress, they throw her off balance. And she needs to fix her hair and put on some jewelry. Nice dress though. Huh, I just mirrored everything you said, didn’t I? Well, you’ve taught me, Obi Wans.

I’m not a fan of hers in general, but she looks good. IN
