Elie Saab Fall 2011 Couture Collection

Posted on July 14, 2011

You always know what you’re going to get with Elie Saab; an uncomplicated amalgam of fairy tale princess and movie star. It’s no surprise that his work dominates the red carpets of movie premieres and awards shows. You won’t see any outrageous shapes or materials here; it’s mega-pretty, straight down the line. Cascades of Swarovski crystals and sequins and beads; pale blue, white, pink, and mauve, with surprising infusions of bronze and navy; amazing monochromatic beading; beautiful embroidery; it just doesn’t get more traditionally feminine and glamorous than this. Enjoy all the pretty, kittens.

Pretty, but so much sameless.  I confess that I’m a little bored.

  • Alison Oppenheimer

    So. Incredibly. Beautiful.

My inner five-year-old Mexican girl is peeing her pants a little.  It’s so pretty!!!

  • jeneria

Why is there a corpse bride?

  • http://twitter.com/insertSobriquet Gabrielle H.

A lot of their collections look the same, but still beautiful.

Beautiful fabrics and a lot of skilled gathering and draping.  Does he do Day Looks or is it all confection?  Well, his confections are beautiful.

  • Anonymous

I’d like the collection better if there were fewere transparent skirts.

  • Anonymous

Way fewer strapless and Wilma’s  yeah

I would love to wear any one of these ethereal creations as a wedding dress. never mind that I am more likely to get married on a mountain top while wearing hiking boots, heh.

She does have a wedding collection each year that’s available through Pronovias. I believe each dress goes for around $4k a pop. But heck! It’s your wedding. Wear what you want! I wish I did instead of letting my family dictate it for me!

    • http://twitter.com/CheriCPat Cheri Patrick

As are most of my friends, but not till those marriages are legal everywhere!

  • Jill Roberts

Pretty!  I can see why celebrities on the red carpet would want to wear these.  Feeling pretty is half the battle.  Well, a quarter of the battle.  But not feeling pretty is a guaranteed fail.

Sparkly! The navy ones definitely appeal to me more than the nudes. I got an invitation to a baby shower that said “neutrals only” and I was like WHAT AM I GOING TO WEAR !? But first I kind of stewed over having my colour choice dictated to me, ESPECIALLY WHEN I HAVE TO BRING A GIFT. But anyway…

    • Anonymous

Why?  Why would they dictate a color scheme for the guests? Major professional photography in some kind of specially-reserved fantasy setting? {for a baby shower???}  Is this a custom, something the peasantry don’t know about?

I beg you to answer this question, it’s killing me not to know.

I suspect they were referring to the color of any clothes a guest would bring, not the guest’s clothes!

I’m pretty sure they must mean no “pink or blue” gifts — not that they wanted the guests to dress in neutrals . . . but then again, I could be wrong . . . I often am.

    • Anonymous

I hope the other commenter is right and this refers to the gifts, not your attire.  But if it is so rude as to be directed at you, navy is a neutral.  Pale green is a neutral.  I use pale pink in my design work as a neutralizing backdrop.  Wear what you want!  I am similarly invited to an all white wear party next weekend.  Trust me, a 47yo, 225 lb man with profusive chest hair and a beard DOES NOT look good in all white.  I’m considering my floor length white linen Morrocan caftan a friend brought me a few years back.  It’s a little sheer, that will show them!

oh, please yes!!…and pictures (or it didn’t happen!)

That means no pink or blue baby gifts!

Pretty if not terribly exciting.  I really like the navy blue dress on the left in the second to the last, row. The model looks a bit like Charlize Theron

    • Anonymous

that’s my favorite too!  I bet that the paler ones look beautiful in real life, but in the pictures they definitely come across as boring and the same.

    • Anonymous

I thought the same thing about her looking like Theron!! She would look glorious in that gown!!

    • Anonymous

Yeah, that one’s the best, I think. SO PRETTY. I would like to have it, please.

  • http://twitter.com/#!/Space_Kitty Space Kitty

Gorgeous, but I can’t wait for the see-through trend to be over.

  • Anonymous

Lots of lovely but they lose their effect all grouped together like that. Taken in ones or twos among lesser evening wear these will certainly meet expectations.

I’d be a tad concerned about finding a slip that wouldn’t ruin the movement of the transparent skirts, and I am now officially over the ice blue-silver grey trend, but the navy & bronze reassure me. As if I’ll be shopping Eli Saab any time soon. Or, probably, any time.

  • Anonymous

    Bam! Delicious.

  • Anonymous

So freakin’ pretty!  Seriously, what woman doesn’t have at least a little bit inside saying “I want to be a princess!”.  And I love the styling of the hair for the show.  I do have one minor (or minority) quible:  I apprciate the diversity of the models shown as far as Asain, Caucasian, blonde, brunette but I think at least one or two of these would look amazing against some beautiful darker African or Latina skin.  Mix it up please!

    • Anonymous

Not so minor a quibble. And, agreed.

  • Anonymous

Well, if that’s what you’re looking for, that certainly is it!

  • http://twitter.com/Hussified Coleen D. Wybranski

I want Christina Hendricks or Connie Britton in one of those bronze ones at the Emmys this year. Or a navy one. I’m not picky.

  • http://www.facebook.com/kellyann.reese KellyAnn Reese

OMG, so gorgeous! I would wear all of these if I ever had the money or the occasion….

  • Anonymous

Sometimes a girl just wants to look pretty. The midnight blue with the deep V neck is my favorite. But the brown gown with the spaghetti straps looks as if the model puked down the front of it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/shaebay Shae Merritt

Were all of those models Taylor Swift or am I seeing things?

  • Anonymous

Pretty, though after a while, it’s hard to distinguish one from the other.

Maybe I’m just not sophisticated enough to get it, but why do all the models have that identical consumptive lip/robotic expression? They are wearing gorgeous clothes–what is wrong with looking like they are pleased to do so? I know runway models are clothes hangers, but can’t they occasionally be happy hangers?

  • Alyson Lamble

SO MUCH SPARKLE.  There are a few that are sort of t-shirt style bodices that I’m not wild about but the rest are really gorgeous.

  • Anonymous

pretty pretty pretty!  I love the color progression.  The last gown is gorgeous!

  • Lisa

So beautiful, sparkly and ethereal!  Love it~!

  • Anonymous

I am in ecstacy… i could probably kill to get to wear some of theese dresses….

  • Anonymous

Stunning! it is what it is and what you expect of Elie Saab.

  • MilaXX

Nuthin wrong w/ a little pretty. I just hope the gals with fair complexions choose the navy & pewter dresses come awards season.

  • Anonymous

I’m getting scared!! I am picturing all of the fair-skinned blondes in Hollywood fighting over these pale gowns, so they can disappear into these foamy creations. Eek!!!

  • Anonymous

If I were invited to the sort of event to which you wear dresses like this, these are the sort of dresses I’d love to wear. People who are strikingly beautiful can wear something “challenging” and look great, but anyone would look great in so much pretty.

  • Anonymous

    Pretty is as Elie does.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jennifer-Blais/682440192 Jennifer Blais

I want them all but I can’t stop imagining that the bride in the very last shot has just walked in on the groom making out with a bridesmaid 😛

  • Anonymous

    These are gorgeous. And sheer!

  • Anonymous

A-MA-zing.  Just put all the RC in these and we won’t have to bitch and moan about the crazies anymore.

  • Anonymous

    What a beautiful collection!

    What a beautiful collection!

  • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

Sigh.  Navy.  Love navy.  Why aren’t more things in navy?  Such a fantastic color.

But what a pissed off looking model-bride!

  • Anonymous

Light bronze with the little cap sleeves (7th row from the bottom on the right), I wish you were mine!

  • Anonymous

Hooray!  A collection without ANY granny panties (at least as far as I can see in these photos).  Thanks for sharing these gorgeous creations.

I keep seeing Charlize Theron in the dress in the 2nd large photo…..

  • sonictofu

    The hair is perfect!

I hope one of these days we’ll be able to view high fashion frocks like this with the 360 interactive feature you can use on vehicle websites.  I want to be able to linger and sigh over the back and side views of these things, too . . .

  • aussiegal77

    Beautiful.  Gorgeous =D

  • Amanda Chan

Um, I kind of adore every single dress on here.

  • http://twitter.com/rachelruthlee Rachel Lee

I want an Elie Saab wedding gown!

    • Anonymous

Me too. I am actually crazy and fell in love with the one Rachel McAdams wore to the Oscars last year and thought it would make a gorgeous wedding gown (I didn’t want white), so I emailed around to see about getting one. The rep @ Eli Saab said I would need to “pass by” one of their fashion houses in Beirut or Paris to have one made for me…for close to $30,000. I knew it would be expensive, but not THAT expensive. Dream squashed! Oh well – they’re gorgeous to look at, and that’ll have to do!

  • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

    I’ll take one of everything!

  • http://twitter.com/omg_dora Dora K.

Not to say that these aren’t pretty, but I can’t help wishing at least some of them were red or turquoise or yellow! I don’t understand the pale gray and beige trend (yes, it is beige, and besides the term “nude” assumes everyone is white). Day clothes seem to have lovely colors and prints right now.

  • Anonymous

I keep seeing Taylor Swift’s face on all the models which kind of ruins it for me.

    • Anonymous

It’s pretty but you know it’s all just going to end up on Taylor Swift and that makes me a bit nauseated.

  • Anonymous

Pretty, and no doubt they’re lovely in reality, but rather dull and predictable. It obviously works for them which is fair enough. But 101 ways with pale chiffon and crystals gets a bit boring.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I’ll take one of everything, please!

  • Anonymous

Sleeves! Both short and long, love it.

  • Jessica Rowe

who’s a pretty princess? I love the navy.

  • http://twitter.com/aidanboleyn Aidan B

Give it to me. All of it.

  • http://twitter.com/danielleRwest Danielle West

I’d love to see Kate Middleton in some of these.  Especially the short, navy blue one.  I know it’s a risk she’d never take, but a girl can dream.

  • Anonymous

    lovely, just lovely

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1314255041 Irina Ryabchuk

    The Wedding Dress.

  • Allyson Wells

I want every single one!! Some of these would make gorgeous wedding dresses. Can’t wait to see them on the red carpet!

  • Anonymous

So so so pretty. I can see Helen Mirren in one of the long-sleeved numbers, and I’m feeling Halle Berry in the 3rd one–the deep V.

  • Anonymous

I’m not saying that it isn’t delicate or pretty, BUT:  Monochromatic to the extreme.  It’s like the models and the dresses are all the same color for more than half the line.  Is this why our Hollywood friends think wearing clothes the same shade as your skin is a good idea?

  • Judy_J

I see these gowns and all I can think of is “I Enjoy Being A Girl”.  These dresses would make any girl feel lovely.

  • Liana Brooks

And here I thought Tadashi was the only designer with a hold on my heart. I want those. One of each, please.

  • Christine Campbell

My question is how many of TLo readers thought Elie Saab was a woman and will never admit it. Bless you, TLo for educating the mainstream.  Oh and the couture?  Breathtaking.

  • Anonymous

I feel like I’ve just eaten two buttercream-frosted layer cakes, six fresh berry pies, four cups of gelato (different flavors), and a tray of warm bacon-maple donuts.

And I mean that as a GOOD thing!  Yummy, yummy, yummy!

Makes me happy to be a woman.  Makes me wish I were a very rich, very thin woman.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Karen-Stephens-Bassett/1503492602 Karen Stephens Bassett

If I were very rich, thin, and beautiful, I would have every one of these dresses in my room-sized closet.  Since I am none of the above, I will just drool over the pictures.  Mr. Saab definitely knows how to please a woman.

  • http://twitter.com/velleitas Isy

I wish that real life had opportunities to wear stuff like this! I have evening gowns galore in my closet that have been given the sad existence of never being seen by anyone except me when I decide to put one on just to wear it in the house and end up watching something like Star Trek or Doctor Who in it, because people here wear JEANS to the opera and ballet. Just…

Anyway, I especially love the first dress and that first bronze one. Colours are fab here. The ones with sleeves and illusion netting look really awkward though… almost incongruous? Maybe they’d look better on ladies who aren’t model-sized though.

  • Anonymous

:::sigh::: I would love to just have a chance to touch and feel the fabrics. So, so pretty.

  • Anonymous

A beautiful collection of wearable dresses.

I think if Marilyn Monroe were alive today, she would wear a lot of Elie Saab.

  • oohsparkley!

Beautiful!  I would enjoy some brighter colors, but if I had to choose, the navy one in the large picture.

  • http://profiles.google.com/aislingoconnor Aisling O’Connor

Encroyable! Elie Saab, get thee on Kate Of Cambrige.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_C65IT4K6RYN4TWRMFJOI3VUDAI Olechka Milashka

    Oh, so pretty!  I WANT!

  • Anonymous

Though I like the dresses themselves, the washed out dishwater palette has a lot to be desired.

  • Anonymous

Pretty, I suppose.  It all looks like some tweeked out designer with a Bedazzler got a hold of the latest Vera Wang Bridal.

  • akprincess72

I wonder if my husband would mind if I sold everything…  I love all of them & a few (the dark chocolate, the large pictures of the navy & the bronze, ALL of the ice blues) I NEED!!!  So pretty!

  • Anonymous

I feel like a lot of this should be seen on Nicole Kidman, but we will get the the sparklier stuff on Taylor Swift and all of the split-to-the-crotch dresses on good old Boobs Legsly.

  • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

Elie Saab is the new Badgely Mischka.
