Downton Abbey Ladies in Vogue UK

Posted on July 11, 2011

We’re far more likely to dig into our DVD collection during the summer months, when there’s very little worth watching on TV. Last week, we found ourselves immersed in the world of Downton Abbey once again and cried to the heavens that we have to wait a while for the recently completed season 2 to air on this side of the Atlantic (January, to be precise). So imagine our delight when we found out those bitchy Crawley sisters all got a chance to wear gorgeous early 21st Century gowns (instead of early 20th) for Vogue UK.

Unfortunately, the Dowager Countess does not appear in this editorial, although we have started using her title as a nickname for our oldest, moodiest cat. “Ohhhh, apparently the Dowager Countess didn’t want salmon feast today.”

Anyway the dresses are gorgeous, the ladies are lovely, and we’re salivating for some good old-fashioned class-conscious British melodrama.

Jessica Brown-Findlay, Michelle Dockery  and Laura Carmichael

To celebrate the return of Downton Abbey, Vogue UK featured actresses Michelle Dockery, Jessica Brown-Findlay and Laura Carmichael in the August 2011 issue, photographed by Jason Bell and styled by Fiona Golfar.

“My Character does get to behave so badly, doesn’t she?”

“Lady Edith is the daughter that everyone expects will have to take care of her mother and father, which makes her more determined than the other two to hook a husband.”

“I’m so excited, I can’t breathe! I think this dress is probably the most beautiful thing I have ever worn.”

“Our costumes for the show are lovely, but nothing on this!”

“…we love it when we have a day of bitching on the set.”

I just came across DA on my DVR, may revisit it this week. Nice photoshoot. I think my favorite is the Valentino in the middle picture.

Ohhhh, I want more Downton Abbey so badly. I simply adore that show, and all the ladies look gorgeous here.

There are ways of er, ‘acquiring’ British TV programmes before they’re aired in the US….

    • lilibetp

Which ways would those be?  And they’re not illegal, are they?

  • Anonymous

Yes, it’s going to be a long wait, but at least there will be an extra 90 minute episode in the 2nd season. That’s something at least.

AND, we get to watch it on PBS, without commercial interruption.

Mmmm, that green Ralph Lauren gown is fine, but definitely requires care in taping up the bust if you’re more than a 34B. (Do they even sell that size bra in Hollywood?). The Oscar de la Renta dress takes some getting used to. The cut is lovely but that rust & gold & green plaid didn’t seem to photograph well so I’m on the fence about it. It might really glow on someone with darker skin.

    • lilibetp

None of these would work on anyone with a bust more than 34B.

they don’t “enhance” in the UK?

I think that oscar dress is gorgeous!  the way it is cut and draped makes the pattern immaterial, the colors just fuse together like a lush fall hillside in Vermont.

Gorgeous, all.  Can’t wait for Downton Abbey to return!

The only thing that appeals to me about being an actress is the chance to wear pretty dresses like these. Swoon.

LOVE these three dresses and the girls in them.  Boy, they really work to accentuate the plainess of Edith on the show, clearly, Laura Carmichael is a lovely young woman.

That caught me as well.  She is the one that looks the most different.

I always plan to spend my summers sitting on the back step, under a tree, with a great beautiful skirt all splayed about my ankles, with my chin in my hand , just thinking about stuff. But it never works out like that.

Um. Gorgeous! Brilliant way to start my Monday morning.

I wish they had Jessica Brown-Findlay standing up; she’s gorgeous, but so is that Valentino. It would have been nice to see more of it. They all look pretty fab.

My goodness, they are all beautiful, aren’t they? Cannot WAIT for the new season!

Gorgeous dresses.  Now how about the Men of Downton Abbey?  Let’s see Dan Stevens, Rob James-Collier and Thomas Howes in modern attire.

Oooooh, yay, Downton!!  Jessica is my favorite to watch, and she looks particularly stunning here.  And if they were to do a photo shoot of the men of Downton, I’d lobby for the dearly departed Mr. Pamook.

Dockery looks incredible in that Ralph Lauren. And the stylist who chose the necklace she’s wearing with it did well, very well.

I love this show!!  The period clothes are so well done, they make me cry.

Thanks for the pics.  The actresses who play the daughters are gorgeous, but I would have loved to see Elizabeth McGovern and Maggie Smith in the pictorial as well.  Plus, why no Vogue love for the “downstairs” actresses as well?

Ooh Lady Mary! She looks amazing in her single shot. (They all do in all of them, but that one particularly.)

All three Grantham Girls look as good or better than the models.

  • Anonymous

Oh, yum yum YUM!  Especially the Valentino and Oscar de la Renta!  I’d like to see Cathy Cambridge in that Valentino number.

How very lovely! I’m seriously jonesing for a DA fix. Can’t go too long without the grand Dowager Countess.

  • Julie Mazziotta

Emma Watson is wearing that second Bottega Veneta dress to the NY Harry Potter Premiere right now!

  • Lisa

LOVE the Oscar and the Valentino!

I’d love to see Penelope Cruz in that red Oscar de la Renta.

Ooh! Thanks for the pretty. Will have to content myself with the spoof of DA you two shared the link to until Season 2.

Thank you for introducing me to this, I love this show

the dowager countess, there, needs to try “taste of the wild.” it’s got venison in it. &, you know, i made a special effort on behalf of yr dowager countess. i always call it “call of the wild” but i went over to the bag to make sure in advance of my certainty that i was wrong.

thats just for dry {altho they do make canned}. there’s also the shrimp or salmon cat food i get….. or you can go above my head & above my price range & purchase weruva’s mideast feast, mediterranean harvest, paella, polynesian bbq, etc & ect. people make fun of my cats’ venison but weruva cannot be beaten w/ a stick.

    as a very weary aside:
the only nice thing i can remember most recent spouse ever doing for me was getting my cats from eddie van halen. thats true, btw, but i only mention it to note that the only reason he got me cats @ all was so he could go to the house of the abovenoted {where they chased around to put them in boxes. spot & spotti, i mean. tho it wouldve been better for both myself & the world’s self were it the spouse that got stuck in the box}.

    did i say: tired, here.

All three are gorgeous, and terrific in their roles, and I love all the dresses except for the first one Dockery is wearing that Emma Watson also wore to the HP premiere. I can’t believe we have to wait so long for more Downton Abbey!

    Also, three things:

    1) I can’t wait for more Sybil/Branson!
    2) I want Evelyn Napier to end up with someone. Maybe he can hire Gwen as a secretary and they can get together?
    3) I don’t care if he’s evil, Thomas is hot!

beautiful photographs. i, too, loved the show. and isn’t that middle veneta gown the one emma roberts just wore at one of the harry potter red carpets?

  • sweetlilvoice

Love this show! And I am now catching up on the 70s Upstairs Downstairs in the meantime. Everyone in DA is just gorgeous. Two words-Maggie Smith, ass kicker.

  • Shawn Hill

    January cannot come soon enough!

HOW many times are we gonna see the burlap and silk number?

  • Anonymous

i am OBSESSED with downton abbey, thanks to t.lo ~ had no idea that a new season was coming, but am simultaneously thrilled and horrified:  JANUARY?!?

  • Gayer_Than_Thou

Love Dockery in the de la Renta, though I don’t love her hair & makeup in that pic.
