Cathy and Bill’s North American Adventure, Day 9

Posted on July 09, 2011

Clearly, Mrs. Cambridge hit a mid-trip slump in the last couple of days or maybe she finally found a lost suitcase, because suddenly, color’s on the menu.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, attend a reception at Calgary Zoo. Catherine wore a Catherine Walker coat dress paired with her L.K. Bennett pumps and Queen Elizabeth II’s Maple Leaf brooch.

Even though a coat dress in June July seems like a somewhat odd choice to us, we love this look. It’s got some structure and shape to it with a little bit of style and a bold infusion of color. Plus, the return of Gramma Betty’s brooch. We can even get behind the nude accessories here because black would have been heavy, white would have been tacky, and any other colors would have been distracting.

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge arriving  in Los Angeles, California. Catherine wore a Roksanda Ilincic dress paired with nude shoes and a L.K Bennett Natalie clutch.

We’re not a bit surprised she broke out one of her best, most stylish looks just to disembark in L.A. That was probably smart, but style-conscious Canadians should all be a little miffed about it. Of course it’s practically colorless, but we don’t mind so much. The pale blue-grey looks lovely and very summer (especially in contrast to the coat dress above). The draping and pleating in the bodice is a bit odd, though. She always looks like she needs an adjustment. Still, well done, Cathy.

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William, Duke of Cambridge attend a private reception held at the British Consul-General’s residence in Los Angeles, California. Catherine wore a silk dress and snakeskin clutch by Diane von Furstenberg.

Oh my goodness, kittens, Mrs. Cathy is wearing a bright color! We wonder if she hasn’t been itching to indulge in some American designers like DVF, who’s a particularly good match for her style. We don’t always like sashes and really think the dress could have used a belt, but Princess, don’t tie a bow smack in the middle of your waist. That looks a little juvenile. Also, couldn’t you have broken out a black pair of pumps for this one? Still, points for style and also for the fact that she looks great. Honey, you need to indulge in more color.

They are so fun to watch. She looks great!

      DVF rules!

    • http://twitter.com/emilyj314 Emily Johnson

The girl is hawt, but she needs to put on some weight, particularly in the last picture (in the gorgeous green dress) she looks like a light breeze could take her away at any moment.

      • Anonymous

You said exactly what I was thinking! She looks waaaay too thin, especially in the DVF. Love the color on her, though.

    • Anonymous

Did she just pack one pair of shoes?  did the shoe bag get lost? or does she have seventeen pairs of beige/nude heels?

ets do a piece on just the shoes…

      • http://profiles.google.com/mmara00 M M

seriously just what I was thinking.

        • Anonymous

Me too. I summer wear something open toed, does she always wear pumps?

          • Anonymous

Either the shoe bag went MIA or those are some very comfortable shoes. Can you all think of any other person in the media glare whose worn one pair/style like that so consistently?

Love the red dress, haven’t checked the temps up that way but a coat dress in July in some parts of Canada could be very smart dressing. Think the Ilincic dress looks much better without the additional sash.

            Keep the colors coming Cathy!

            • Anonymous

I’ll forgive the shoes, but I was hoping she would ditch the pantyhose once she hit CA.  Alas, she has not.  She is probably the only woman under 60 wearing pantyhose in the entire state right now.

            • Anonymous

No matter the weather, you won’t find her without hose and closed-toe shoes if she’s wearing a skirt.  It’s the royal dress code, and she definitely isn’t going to deviate from it.  Heck, even crazy Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie wear hose and closed-toe shoes, and you know they wouldn’t if Grandma didn’t insist!

And I’ll bet that every woman at that event also has on hose and closed-toe shoes.  Royalty mustn’t be subjected to bare legs and toes, after all.

            • Anonymous

Make–would you believe Cathy has revived the pantyhose market in England?  They are being bought at 90% over the regular rate.

It was a bit chilly (maybe around 18-20C) in Calgary yesterday and very windy, so it was a good day for that dress.

            • Anonymous

20 degrees isn’t that chilly. I’m sweating just looking at the pictures, although I admit it’s a gorgeous coat and I really want it. For fall.

“Love the red dress, haven’t checked the temps up that way but a coat

My first trip to Canada was as a kid with my family—in July. Being from the DC area, we of course packed shorts and sleeveless tops. The first night up north, and we were running to the nearest store to find sleeves and long pants.

There’s a good chance the temps are in the high 60s-low 70s, and the sleeves would not be the least bit uncomfortable.

            • Anonymous

Mo, that’s what I remember from our trip to Calgary at just about the same time of year couple years ago. Was a mite on the chilly side so that coat dress makes more than fashion sense, to me at least!

      • Anonymous

G–I think we have seen two pairs of LK Bennetts–both nude but one a platform pump and the other a regular pump (as seen above).

    • http://wipgirl.wordpress.com/ kristel

I expect the red was planned for the departure from Canada (red+maple leaf brooch=thank goodness no white or it’d have been a bit too on the nose), but it was a cool and fairly windy day in Calgary, so it’s probably just as well she wore something a bit heavier and more structured.

I LOVE that green dress. May have to save up – it needs to be in my closet!!

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

      They look wonderful and happy.

    • Anonymous

I am totally distracted by the fact that in the first picture of the green dress, her knees look like people’s faces. Or maybe that’s just me :). Other than that, she is gorgeous!

      • Anonymous

        Voldemort!!

      • Anonymous

Knee faces, yup, there they are – how funny! Only now I can’t unsee them and will forevermore be fighting the urge to look at the Duchess’ knees whenever she bares them.

      • margaret meyers

Stop, frcathie, you’re creeping me out!  there ARE faces in her knees.

She may have been a bit concerned about flaring skirts near airplanes, the yellow one from the last post apparently wound up showing her underwear to the world. Not something she could be happy about.

      • Anonymous

T–I think the photo showed way more than her underwear!!

As a Canadian who loves following this woman’s style I have to agree that it’s a bit annoying that the really nice stuff comes out as soon the couple touches down in L.A. I imagine it has something to do with the idea that Canadians aren’t “fancy people”. For the most part that is true but we still appreciate style. (I LOVE the Ilincic dress!) It’s not all lumberjacks and fur traders up here people!! (though there were a few at last week’s fabulous pride parade ;P)

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F3HKIK7MIJMBDAQBDWEAQDTXUM theneva

If it makes you feel any better, Canada helped make Wills hot again, if only fleetingly. Whooo, howdy.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

I love all these outfits. She looks adorable, and always has a smile on her face. She’s not tortured at all, like Diana was. She’s in complete command of the situation and seems to really adore her husband, like Diana didn’t.

I can’t get over her total lack of hips. Even if she’s slim, the female of the species usually has some bone structure in that region…you know, for child-bearing. Is the family worried about the royal lineage?  :-)

Enough about the nude shoes, what’s up with Will and his chronic navy blue suit? Does she open his closet and see an endless row of  dumpy, dull suits, or is it the same one? Maybe they were trying to save on the cost of checked bags and did only carry-on.

      • Anonymous

SO sure he has at least 3 of those blue suckers on the trip.No stains or unfortunate accidents will be allowed to mar the ceremonial appearance of the Future King of England. I bet at least one complete set of appearance wear is packed separately, as well, just in case some dread catastrophe befalls some of the luggage.

    • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

I’m probably the only one who doesn’t like the green dress. The shade of green is all wrong for her skin tone, makes her look kinda yellow and brown. I wish it was a darker or bluer green.

      • http://twitter.com/snowgall Teresa Galloway

Absolutely agreed. The minute I saw it, I went “ugh, that color!” She looks much better in jewel tones.

    • scottyf

The Duchess, the First Lady, and those women who have to do a myriad of public appearances in one day will always have my undying admiration.

As an admitted clothes horse, I pack WAY to heavily for trips. For a three-day weekend I will pack as many twelve separate outfits and change sometimes three times a day. It’s friggin’ exhausting. I need serious medical intervention.

I can’t imagine what it’s like to be EXPECTED to do this on a regular basis, and also be constantly scrutinized on every detail. It really does take strength of character and composure. I really am in awe.

      • Anonymous

just the concept that you are “on duty” the instant you step foot out of your bedroom and into the light of day is daunting enough, without all the attendant scrutiny of the people and the press, poking and prodding to find any small defect to enlarge.  I agree with you wholeheartedly.

      • Anonymous

An acquaintance of my who is very much in the public eye told me a story:  One time she stepped out of a hotel room with no makeup, hair ratty, in sweats and was greeted by a video camera and a microphone.  She was horrified.  Ever since then, she considers her image part of her job and NEVER leaves her house or her hotel room without being fully put-together.  Her image is a crucial part of her bread and butter.

      • Anonymous

*I* couldn’t live under such scrutiny, Though I suspect, scottyf, you’d be able to command enough helping hands that much of the logistical burden you currently bear would be lifted.

    • Lauen newman

She looks lovely. As a matter of fact, this whole tour, her face hasn’t gotten greasy or her hair hasn’t looked great. Not fair.

    • Anonymous

Oh it’s so nice to see some COLOR! Clearly she’s been paying attention to TLo! I especially love the red outfit – that’s a beautiful color on her (and most brunettes). The pleats and draping on the grayish dress would have looked a little odd on anyone – but she looks great anyway. The green dress is a little plain – but I’ll take it!

I think we need to nominate the LK Bennett nude pumps for the Cal Ripkin, Jr. Ironman award – they never seem to take a day off..

    • Anonymous

WELCOME TO MY CITY, Cathy and Bill! I invited them for dinner, but they sadly had to refuse. I think they’re probably pretty busy.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=723599046 Carol Wyatt

LOVE her in red!  She positively glows!  The Ilincic frock gives her a welcome bit of shape; wish it had just a touch more color.  The DVF would have been infinitely improved with a structured belt and shoes with more presence, but it’s so nice to see her in bright colors, I won’t quibble.

      Again, RED!!!!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6PUVFQ7YCZZFZRIER6BEJ4HVYE Amye

She looks gorgeous (even more) in color!  Though the dove gray dress is to-die-for.  And please forgive me – I’m probably wrong, but I always throught the Canadiens were a bit more stodgy in their dress, than us “southerners”.  Hence breaking out the US designers and a little bit of flair.  (But not too much, as she is representing Queen Betty.)

    • http://twitter.com/merrigator merrigator

That green is fabulous on her.  I concur that she rocks color!

    • Anonymous

They both look happy, relaxed and in command of things.  Cathy, brava for finding some color and a bit more edge. I’m proud of you.  Bill, yeah you look great in blue, but enough already.  In fact you need to discover someone has stolen all your navy suits and all Cathy’s nude shoes and be forced to go shopping.

    • Anonymous

Ladies and gentlemen we have a winner. Color that is. Cathy and that shade of green were made for each other. Her hair and complexion are perfectly complemented by that green. Well done Cathy and DVF.

    • Anonymous

As I view all these pix of Cathy since the wedding and now the extensive NA tour, I realize why she and Bill took so long to get married. She needed the time to strengthen her facial muscles to withstand endless days of smiling.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_TH56FXRFTLCQNTN3JNFIYM7JPY Pattie knitter

I wish she had her hair up in the DVF dress.  The neckline is very flattering and her hair is masking it.  However, she probably saves the updos for the fancy night time events.

    • Anonymous

she always looks lovely but old beyond her years. I guess that’s how royalty dress for official situations and that’s how it’s going to be. I agree the nude pumps are perfect with the dark salmon dress and not so great with the green. although I like the DVF dress STYLE that green is so… green.

if a coat dress in June is a bad idea, then its probably worse in July.

      • Anonymous

the average summer evening temp in Calgary is 8 degrees Celcius (or 46F), because of our high elevation and very dry air we can and do wear jackets and coats all year round…you may not want to know what our average winter temp is :)

    • Anonymous

I’m thinking there’s been a handler involved since she joined the royals.  Somebody has directed her dress code to her role’s perceived image in each country.  I don’t believe she had access to so much couture before the engagement and that, after a time coaching, she’ll find her own way and style.  Even if she doesn’t change, ‘classic’ is still a style choice I can appreciate.

    • Anonymous

I think she looks great. Especially after hugging that little girl with cancer in the yellow dress. She’s a classy broad.

    • margaret meyers

That green dress has a great mid-century modern vibe.  I have a vision of Mary Tyler Moore turning Richie over to the the babysitter while Rob gets the car. It looks smashing on the Duchess and DVF should prepare for the onslaught of orders!.

I would say that she should wear that shade of green every day of her life, since it sets off her hair beautifully. however, in light of what we know now about her tendency to cling to certain colors like Tom Hanks on a life raft in the Pacific, I’ll refrain.

    • Anonymous

I hate to be critical of her because I think she’s fabulous, but I do wish she would lighten up on the eye liner. She would look fresher.

      • ArKane Fyre

YES. Thank you. I was just thinking that. Especially that picture of her sitting in the red. Man she looks (and probably is, very) tired!

        • Anonymous

She DOES look- and probably is- very tired. I hope she sleeps on the plane back home!

    • rach_fraser

it’s also quite often necessary in Calgary……

This is beyond the realm of this blog, but . . . I want to hear her speak.  I want to know what kind of person she is.  I want to know what she thinks and believes!  Is she keeping private or does the world not care?  (Great dresses.)

Thank you guys for your up-to-the minute coverage … it is the bomb!

    • Anonymous

I am amazed at how great she looks in all of the clothes she wears.  She always looks better than the model.

    • Anonymous

I love the odd cut of the Ilincic dress and it also gives her the illusion of a more hour-glass shape.

    • Anonymous

There is no way the Roksanda Ilincic dress could look flattering on 99 percent of women — Kate has no bust and no hips and this almost (almost) makes her look top-heavy and wide.

    • Anonymous

It looks like she may’ve altered the back of the DVF. It doesn’t look like it has that deep V in the profile shot. She looks great in all three dresses. And wearing Betty’s brooch again on their last day in Canada was inspired. She’s definitely got the chops for this public role she’s taken on.

    • Lisa

Love it love it love it!  Love all three looks, and I ADORE the DVF clutch!  And you’re right, she does have the right style to wear lots and lots of DFV – that’s her style.

    • http://profiles.google.com/rosatcollege Ros Clarke

The red is a great colour for her.  The DVF is a great shape for her (though I agree about the placement of the bow).  I’d love to see her invest in a few belts and some more interesting shoes, but in general, I think she’s doing a great job.  And it’s so nice to see her smiling so much.

    • Anonymous

I wonder if she keeps wearing those shoes because they’re comfy and she’s on her feet so much. No other reason I can think of.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I think the pale blue-gray of the middle dress is fantastic.  Sure, it’s pale and it works as a neutral, but it’s an unusual one.  Not all color needs to be bright and flashy  — in fact, in this case I think it works better as a neutral.

I also prefer the nude pumps to black for the green dress.  Black would have felt a bit heavy to me with the heavily saturated green, especially for outdoors in the summer.

    • Anonymous

Those pumps are dull but they must be comfortable to wear when you’re working hard, as she most certainly is.

    • http://twitter.com/VicksieDo Vickie Lord

It’s SO refreshing to see a young lady dressed like a young lady, rather than the HO looks our actresses and music people wear :)

    • Anonymous

Oh, she looks great, but my consern is another: how odd is it that she appears to own a single pair of nude pumps ( and the red one we only saw once) but she has a different beige or pinkish cluch for each outfit? I would count them just out of curioucity, i think i will at the end of thei tour…

    • Anonymous

She looks fantastic in all three looks.  I prefer the nude shoes with the green dress to black.  It is summer in LA, after all.

    • Anonymous

She looks really pretty in red and she looks great in the DVF. LOVE the DVF clutch in coral, that would have looks fab with the green.

    • MilaXX

Well at least the Queen of beige didn’t come to the USA. The red is fine and I agree neutral accessories were warranted. My only quibble is the makeup, both the blush and the eyeliner look to heavy. I know she prefers to do her own, but someone needs to teach her to blend a little better. Not 100% sold on the lilac or blue/gray dress. The bunching looks a little odd. Love the green on her but wish she had left the belt tied on the side and worn a black shoe. Also a simple gold chain or another of Queen Elizabeth’s broaches might have been nice.

Swoon….clunk.  I adore this chick.  It’s that genuine smile, the best accessory ever invented.  I’ll even forgive the perpetual use of the nude shoe (although I agree it worked well with the red).

LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!! She looks fab and I love the green dress!!!!

    • elzatelzabelz

She looks SO pretty in colors. Of course, she looks pretty on blue, neutrals too, but those are getting a little boring already. I hope whoever approves of her clothes allows more color in. Very pretty.

Make me appreciate FLOTUS even more.

Love all three looks, her best dresses of the trip!  In other news Bill is looking so repetitive.  Please Bill, wear another suit!

    • Anonymous

Coat dress for the win! Love.

Dress #2 is nice but occasionally the draping is awkward & it verges on too busy. She only pulls it off because she’s such an adorable coat hanger. Otherwise, it’d make her look too blocky.

Dress #3 is again nice & the color looks good on her, but this dress is the one that looks very inoffensive political wife to me, even if it is DvF.
