Bill and Cathy Cambridge in Canada, Day 1

Posted on July 01, 2011

We realize we aren’t exactly exempt from this criticism ourselves, but the collective media freakout that the Cambridges’ feet are touching North American soil RIGHT AT THIS VERY MOMENT OMG I NEED TO SIT DOWN — is already getting to be a bit much. Here at the T Lo International Royal Watching Institute, we have standards of decorum and therefore will refrain from shrieking and squealing like a 5 year old girl gazing upon a collection of My Pretty Ponies for the first time.

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper stand outside the Rideau Hall in Ottawa, Canada.

Erdem Resort 2012 Collection

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge visit the National War Memorial in Ottawa, Canada.

We suspect navy is going to be her signature color for the time being. She’s been wearing it often and let’s face it, it goes well with the ring. The dress is spectacular; low-key in some respects due to the very simple silhouette and styling, and yet high-impact because it’s so striking. It’s also something of a surprise. We would have assumed she’d be wearing a suit on a day like this. The matchy neutral accessories are disappointing, but she looks fantastic anyway.

Bill looks fine, but we think he needs to get away from the 3-button jackets. Standing next to his gorgeous wife in her slinky lace dress, he looks a bit too buttoned-up.

I need her to wear something we all hate so that we can all make sure she’s indeed human.

I’m even struggling to hate the shoes that I usually hate without exception.

Yeah, I hate nude shoes generally but they’re deployed appropriately here.

Maybe we can all just hate her for being ridiculously thin? It’s getting a bit worrisome.

Y’all leave your shrieking for when Shelly O steps out, right?  (Ducking)

Not crazy about this lace and it seems a bit evening for a day-time walkabout.  Also wondering why the white underlay was removed from the sleeves– to make it less hot for outdoor wear?  To make it look lighter and more summer?  Whatever, it was not an improvement over the original for me.  The runway model looks better, which is unusual.

Still, as you say, its a great color for her and she looks terrific.  Gotta love that genuine smile. I think the girl is delighted to be a royal and loving all the fuss.  Good for her–constant scrutiny is part of her job now.

I don’t think the original has lined sleeves either the bisque lining just matches the models pale skin better.

I agree with you about the lace for a daytime event.  But, she does look great, and I suspect that stems from finally getting her man!

I was not at all “into” the wedding or anything to do wtih it, but have to admit that I have been totally sucked in! I love these too, think she is gorgeous and can’t find anything to dislike about her.

    • Anonymous

I think the neutral accesories keep it from looking too ” cocktail”. Very nice.

Been waiting for your post — but she did actually wear three outfits yesterday. A Roland Mouret dress and Smythe blzer as they left London and then a previously-worn Issa dress for the BBQ in the evening. I agree about Bill’s 3-button suits. Would love to see a blog aobut her jewelry — the start of a great thing?

Oh my god, I know it. It’s so pretty. As is she.

I’m totally irritated at TLo for making me pay attention to any of the royals. ;) I never gave even a tiny damn about them before.

          • Anonymous

I’m the opposite. Ever since my 10-year old self woke up at the crack of dawn to watch Diana marry Charles, I have been hooked on the British royals. They’re like crack to me.

            • Anonymous

The British royals weren’t even on my radar until Diana married Charles, and I couldn’t for the life of me figure out what all the the fuss was about. But, then, I was never a fan of Diana. I always thought she was a bubblehead who needed a filter when she spoke in public. I felt really uncomfortable hearing some of things she talked about. I’ve come to realize the poor girl had no idea what she was getting into when she married Charles. It couldn’t have been easy for her*.

Kate is so dignified, and it appears she was fully prepared for the life ahead of her. Plus, I love her style. She always looks fabulous.

*I still think Diana could have more discreet when talking about her private life and personal problems. Some things are better left private.

            • Anonymous

I loved Diana, but I can’t disagree with you on the privacy thing.
As you said, she had no clue what she was getting into. She was practically thrown into this relationship with Charles (much like princesses in the past) when she was too young/dumb to even know what she wanted, much less to speak up for herself and what resulted was a woman with (understandably) a lot of bitterness.
The difference with Kate is that she’s old enough to make her own choices PLUS the British monarchy is not nearly as controlling of its members as it was even in Diana’s day. They’ve loosened up considerably, so William was able to actually fall in love with someone and choose her to be his wife. Novel idea.
This woman actually looks happy, and as we say around here, a smile is your best accessory. I wish them much happiness.

            • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

OMG, finally someone who agrees with me!  I’m not knocking Diana — she was hurt, badly by the souring of her marriage, especially learning that he’d never really been interested in making it work, and people do all kinds of stupid things when they’re hurting.

But I HATED the way she discussed it in public.  If they hadn’t had kids, no problem, bash him to your heart’s content.  I just always thought of how much it would have sucked to hear your mother talking about her marriage to your father that way.  Especially after her death (to be fair, it’s not like she could have known).  It would have been so easy for those boys to blame him forever.

            • Anonymous

I blame it on her raising. (Trashing the ex after there were kids in the picture.) I don’t really blame her speaking a little loosely now and then, iron self-discipline when you’re an emotional mess is kind of hard to achieve. But it wasn’t just  the occasional slip. From which I conclude that she wasn’t raised to believe that when a marriage isn’t working, the #1 priority of both parents should be to protect the kids from the fall out.

Of course, lots of people didn’t get this lesson, apparently.

    • Anonymous

She looks fab (accessories notwithstanding).  Bill looks fine except he needs a more expansive tie and pocket square selection.

    • Jennifer Coleman

It really is a lovely dress – the nude shoes are a bit of a disappointment – maybe another type of neutral, like a pale olive could have been nice,

    • Anonymous

Lace, and I like it.  The neutral items could be changed, in my opinion, but she may be making some concessions.

    • Anonymous

This may be a first, but the nude pumps seem right for this dress/series of appearances. It is interesting to compare and contrast CC’s public wardrobe with Mrs. O’s.

    • Anonymous

      She looks gorgeous!

    • Marie Drucker

I read something interesting that now I must research (or have the all-knowledgable bitter kittens fill me in on): A woman who will be meeting the royal couple, after missing out on her chance to meet the Queen years and years ago, said she was happy that Kate wouldn’t be wearing a hat, because that meant that she wouldn’t have to either. So… the outfits must be planned out well in advance (obviously) and if the queen or her royal representative is wearing a hat so must all the other ladies!? I kind of love that.

      Bill looks pudgy.

Funny, I was just thinking he looked very slim. Like they both could use a sandwich.

      • Anonymous

The 3 button suit is no mans friend and his posture is a little slouchy here, hence – pudgy.

    • Lauen newman

She went to something in the evening as well and wore a cute dress there. She looks great here. Definitely knows how to dress.

    • Anonymous

I’m not loving this. My first thought was that it’s a bit matronly (probably because of the lace). The only reason she doesn’t go entirely off the matronly cliff is because she’s so thin and gorgeous. A lesser mortal would look like Phoebe Tyler Wallingford.

Exactly why I don’t expect her to let herself gain more than a few pounds until she’s actually pregnant. She’s worked darn hard to set the bar high and being very slim and fit makes it sooo much easier to pull off a stellar appearance time after time after time.

    • Anonymous

beautiful dress, and i know b/c of the occasion and her position she couldn’t go TOO wild with the accessories, but i’d like to see her take a page out of mrs. o’s fashion playbook:  take some risks!

    • Crystal Thomas

In addition moving away from the three button, I’d also like to see Billy venture out of the navy suit zone more. Let’s see some variety! I realize at his core he’s a politician of sorts and can only be so adventurous, but surely they can’t be spending all their $$ on her wardrobe-he should have a few pounds left for more than one suit…and one shirt…and one tie.

    • voter1

She looks better than the model in that dress.

          Oh. Then…never mind.

    • Anonymous

Wow, I was thinking as I looked at the pics: She looks gorgeous but TLo will hate the dress because of the lace. I was so wrong! Are you being blinded by your fan-girl reaction to the royals?

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Lace is like everything else: it depends on the wearer and how it’s used.  TLo often gives lace a pass if it’s done well and works on the girl — they just don’t generally like it, probably because it generally ISN’T done well at all.

    • MilaXX

I like these two and the fact that they seem to be doing well upgrading the image of the British Monarchy, but they look look boring in these outfit. Her dress is fine and she looks great, and I get that she is in a position where a pop of color would not be welcome, but really her youth is the only thing saving this for me. However kudos to the designers who are getting nice career boost from everything she wears. Same goes for him, yeah the single button, navy suit is boring, but what else can he wear?  I think they are doing pretty good at walking the fine line between the old and the new.

    • Anonymous

I like the accessories with the dress.  She looks dignified and sophisticated.  He looks fine too but he will always be a footnote when he is standing next to her.

    • Anonymous

She looks great, love her her pulled back in that manner.  The dress is normally not my cup of tea but she really looks flawless in fit and style.  Wills, on the other hand, is a bit of a frump here.  It is a little odd how he can swing from Hottie McHotterson at Wimbeldon to Dudley Doright in a matter of days.  The lack of the shades and this not so flattering suit account for a lot but I think his posture here is a culprit as well as his hair not being as groomed.

    • Anonymous

Pat Kiernan from NY1 was saying this morning that one newspaper (I think it was the Times) had a photo-less article about the couple’s visit to North America. He was all, HOW can you do an article about them without a photo so we can see what Kate’s wearing???

Pat is a straight male and even he knows it’s all about Kate’s dress.

Speaking of which, it’s gorgeous. She looks beautiful, as usual. I would have gone with bright yellow shoes, but that’s me.

    • http://joansbooks.blogspot.com/ lilithcat

Nice dress, but the length is off; it needs to be a skooch shorter.  The shoes are dreadful.

    • Anonymous

I’m impressed Kate’s calling the shots and staying true to her own style and also not drawing all the attention away from her husband which I read was one of the many issues in Charles and Di’s marriage, although definitely not the major one. She would be aware how cruel the press, especially in the UK, can be about the Royal family and their clothes. She’s providing very little fodder for serious criticism or mockery so kudos to her.

    • Anonymous

I can’t say I’m in love with the lace dress.  What kills it for me is the unlined sleeves which make her arms look like there’s something awfully wrong with her skin there.  I would have preferred other accessories as well.  She is undeniably lovely, no questions there. But the outfit would have been better served with lined sleeves and a darker bag and shoes.  Bill looks like Bill.  Its perfectly acceptable, if a touch drab. And Its clear that he’s really not too interested in how he dresses.  For him this is a lifetime of work.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=2413568 Cheryl Heitzman

I want this dress soooo bad. Though I’d get rid of the nude heels, YUCK. This dress is just perfect!

    • Anonymous

Lovely. Just lovely. I can’t be 100% sure but she is wearing shear hose or she has perfectly even skin tone. All I can think of is poor Emma Robert’s legs in comparison with all that mottled knobby flesh exposed. Shear hose I do hope it is making a come back. My only compliant is I would love to see her wear some more interesting shoes. It is always black or beige.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

LOVE everything about it. Question: Is she wearing hose? Can’t tell, but she’s the one who could launch the trend away from bare legs. Face it girls, our legs look a lot better with hose.

      • Anonymous

I’m already a fan of hers, but if she were to bring back hose it would probably seal the deal for me.
I would love her forever like Scottyf with his My Pretty Pony collection.

So, she’s just said ‘bag that whole royalty-wear-hats racket,’ eh? Innnnteresting.

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

She seems to only wear hats at events where they are absolutely necessary, like Ascot.  I read somewhere that she really doesn’t like hats, so she avoids them when she can.

Plus, on things like the hats, there’s a bit more leeway for her because: a) she’s young so styles will be different, b) she was not a royal pre-marriage so the public is used to seeing her in a non-royal role, and c) the Queen learned her lesson with Charles and Di, plus she dotes on William.

        • Anonymous

I know so little, I thought it was a for-real capital-R Rule. Now I know.

          • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Well, for certain things it is — some occasions a woman is required to wear a hat.  But a lot of it is people following the Queen’s lead.  And the Queen always wears a hat, probably due to her age — when she was a young woman, that’s what was done; you weren’t properly dressed without one.

It’s kind of like at casual events, you still won’t see the Queen in slacks.  Just not going to happen.  But I think she’s really come to recognize that she can’t impose those things on the younger royals, if for no other reason than because they’d look kind of ridiculous.

    • Anonymous

Does she ever not smile?? She appears to be the happiest person alive!! And it does seem genuine. She just seems so likable, and she is elegant, something many young women might start to emulate. Fingers crossed.

Let’s see…she’s young, thin, rich, gorgeous, and has a handsome husband who’s a prince. I’d be smiling too : )

No comment about the nude shoes?

    • Julie Kimball

I think she looks fantastic, but I really wish she would get a little more makeup tutoring. That black eyeliner all the time with the barely there lip is so harsh looking on her.  I think it is terrific that she wants to do her own makeup, I just wish she would learn some other ways of doing it that are a bit softer. She makes her eyes disappear. Otherwise she is fantastic and so pretty and stylish and refreshing. She is working within the royal restraints without losing herself.

      • MilaXX

I would give her a bit more color on the lip and soften the eyes, at least for the day. For an evening affair. she can glam up the eye a bit more.

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

She looks lovely, but the eyeliner is mighty heavy.  There are a lot of ways of lining the eye for different looks and she should try some.

        • Anonymous

I like heavy eyeliner, but I agree she could dial it back a bit. Just do the corners, use grey (or perhaps green or purple, depending on her eye color) instead of black. Eh. She’s beautiful no matter what she does.

Also, she’s probably wearing hose, since I’m guessing it would be considered inappropriate not to. But I wouldn’t be surprised to discover that her legs are indeed as smooth and flawless as they appear to be. I’m starting to think the woman is a freak of nature.

          • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Oh, I don’t mind the heavy liner — as an option.  But in her case, it’s her default.  I think she should mix it up more, either with color or liner styles.  I’d also like to see some decent lip color on her.  Just once, I’d like to see a strong red lip and a barely there eye.  Just for the fun of it.

      • Anonymous

I’m totally with you on that.  Way too heavy on the eyes, she’s in danger of getting to Rose Tyler-dom.

    • aimee_parrott

Love it!  I think the neutral accessories save it from looking too much like an evening dress, and she’s just so striking.

I like it a lot. It is reserved, which is appropriate, but the lace gives it pattern and texture that isn’t overwhelming or inappropriate for the situation.

Even though I’m a sworn lover-of-navy, I hope she’ll eventually reduce her current quotient just a tad.

But this is a lovely choice — not complaining one bit.

Mainly … I’m SO happy she’s got her hair out of her face for a change — girl sure does fool with her hair a lot when it’s loose.

It’s pretty hard for me to be on board with this dress, as my mom made me the same one to wear to my Senior class dinner, in green lace…in 1964! And, she would never have allowed me to wear it so snug. To be fair, I’ll admit, so far Kate does not seem to be able to wear anything that is unflattering.

On the other hand, perhaps this is what makes it a classic?

    • Renee Thomas

For some reason her dress isn’t doing it for me. She does look fab, but I feel like it’s her, and the fact that the fit is absolutely perfect, more than the dress itself. But, I’m not a fan of lace.
Have we see her wear her hair up yet? I’d like to see it.
I think Wills should be wearing a nice oxblood shoe instead of black. A small change like that would elevate his ensemble.

    • Lori B

She’s attending a citizenship ceremony now in Canada’s colors.  Beautiful white dress, red hat with a maple leaf design and red shoes.   She looks gorgeous.   I admire her so much.   And the only dresser she has along on the trip is her hairdresser.

    • Anonymous

I see she’s wearing her favorite nude shoes again.  There was something in the Daily Mail recently about how her mom and sister had to buy the same shoes because they’re so fabulous on the Duchess.  (I love gossip rags, don’t judge me!)   And they must be comfortable, considering how she wears them with about 50% of her outfits right now.  The dress is gorgeous, and gorgeous on her, of course; she has a truly spectacular figure for wearing slim dresses.  And I love her hair partially back.  Again, nothing to criticize!  Best of all, of course, is that like Shelly O., she has the best accessory of all, an adoring man by her side. :)

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Man, I kinda want to buy those shoes now!  If she can wear them THAT much without severe pain or blisters, I want them.

    • Anonymous

I imagine she (and her stylists) avoid suits because they look too “ladies who lunch” and too old-school royal.  It’s probably the same reason she/they prefer tiny, light hats and clutch purses.  She just doesn’t seem like a Chanel suit kind of person.  Other royal wives took up the suits as a kind of uniform and armor but I hope she won’t.

Side note – I appreciate that they didn’t try to match the sheath to her skin tone.  People, including the Erdem model, look like they’re trying to look naked when the shell matches their skin and (IMHO) it cheapens the look, especially with lace.

I’m surprised he didn’t prorogue this visit. http://www.shitharperdid.ca. sigh…. Maybe Catherine got him to crack a smile.

Love that dress, too bad its probably sold out now :)

Another question.  Why do you guys call them them Cambridges, when their last name is Winsdor?

It’s a TLo joke. Confusing around here sometimes if you miss a day!

I know it’s a joke and I usually check the website a couple of times a day.  However, they’re not the only site that does it.

Because they are the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Windsor isn’t really the royal family’s last name, either.

        • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Not true.  By an Act of Parliament, those in succession for the throne must carry the legal last name of Windsor, at the behest of the Queen Mother.  When Queen Elizabeth II had children they were given the name “Mountbatten (Prince Philip’s last name) Windsor” to accommodate that law.  William’s last name is also Mountbatten Windsor.

That’s what I thought!  Cambridge is a place, not their last name.

She continues to do her job well.

I say leave him alone. I bet he’s been trained since childhood to wear
what’s laid out for him for public appearances – dressing him properly
is probably someone or other’s entire job – and if she wants to spiff
him up she will. If he starts having opinions and exercising his own
      judgment it may be unfortunate.

Gaak the “nude” shoe appears but I don’t mind it because of the “nude” underlay of the dress.  But the bag, too?  hmmmmmm

Navy is good on her but I do hope she will break out with little pops of other colors.  For example, wouldn’t a, say, red bag have looked lovely (and not costumey because let’s face it, she’s not celebrating Independence Day, yes?)

They are pretty gorgeous.  Wish I could bring the hate but I just can’t.

Breathtaking. Her in that dress makes my hatred for lace completely melt away. Love! It! And I love that she actually had them REMOVE the lining in the sleeves!

I just thank her profusely for not decking out in red and white, just because it’s Canada.  Then again, maybe she saved it for today.

Unfortunately, “buttoned up” is how the British want to appear. Who better than the Prince?

A Canadian friend who’s watching them on the teevee said that today she’s in a white suit with red shoes & a red fascinator hat with maple leaves in it!Can’t wait for the next installment!

Love the navy, she looks great~!

OK, I’m not a man.  If you are wearing a 3 button jacket, shouldn’t you button all three buttons?  Or is it OK to just button the middle one like that?

      • Anonymous

Carson on “Queer Eye for the Straight Guy” likened the three buttons to: Sometimes, Always, Never (starting from the top). That was a couple of years ago, but I suppose it still holds true.

Someone above said that the matchy/boring shoes and bags may be a concession.  I think this is likely.  I too would like to see her take more risks, but we may have to wait for her to get a little more established in her role before she is willing or able to do that.

Oh, but imagine when he takes off that jacket. WOWZA

She looks sic and very appropriate and as pretty as ever, but it is a tad boring. How can i deny it?

      They look great, as usual!

    • Lisa

Love that dress!  She looks gorgeous.  He looks handsome and appropriate as he always does.

Oh, and by the way! Are you gonna show us the Charlene Wittstock/Prince Albert nuptials from this weekend? Huh? Are ya, TLo? Huh? Please please please? (*Hops up and down*)

      Love love love that dress!

      That is all.

      No mention of William’s hems?

Flooded with harsh daylight and she still looks fab.

I love how she’s staked her claim stylewise. I like to think Diana would be impressed.

She is stunning. She always looks great and here is no exception.

Wow. I LOVE that dress. I’m not a royals groupie, but I think she is lovely and I generally like what she wears, although I imagine that she has to keep it sober for protocol reasons.  The lace is a touch of frivolity, but from a distance it looks like a print.

She is as thin as the model wearing the dress. I love it & I pretty much love everything she wears. I do agree she needs to gain a few pounds but this dress would not look good on someone even a little heavier.

TLo, I thought you hated colored lace!

    • Jeremy Porta

He needs hair implants. It looks like he lost weight leading up to the wedding, which is good. He’s nowhere near as fit as his MUCH hotter brother, though.
