Bill and Cathy Cambridge in Canada, Day 3

Posted on July 03, 2011

Continuing our Independence Day weekend activities of worshiping European royalty, let’s check in on that nice Cambridge couple again.

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge attend a tree planting ceremony at Rideau Hall in Ottawa, Canada. Catherine is wearing a Catherine Walker dress paired with a Hobbs clutch and Tabitha Simmons shoes.

Hobbs Somerton Bag

We can hardly believe it, but for once, someone’s pant hem is too short rather than too long. Then again, the more we look at Bill in a suit, the more we think he could use a different cut altogether.  He favors the wide lapels and 3-button jackets, but they’re not really doing him any favors. Sure, they make his shoulders look broad, but the cut isn’t all that modern-looking, and considering what he looks like in a polo uniform, there’s no reason for him to look like he’s swimming in his suits. He’s a well-built young man and he always looks like he’s a kid in his father’s suits. Cathy needs to take a break from looking at herself in a mirror and get to work on her husband’s personal style.

As for Cathy, it’s another yeoman-like royal outfit; pretty, extremely flattering to her figure, and almost business-like in its no-nonsense vibe. It gets the job done. We wish she’d chosen a more interesting bag and shoes, but considering she managed to look good while shoveling dirt, she’s done well here.

I love that last photo of the little girls looking up at the Duchess.  So cute!

I was just about to say the same thing!

Cathy looks every inch the knockout that she is.  And manages to look appropriately put together and sleekly contemporary, while also balancing the need to be a tad bit reserved.  Bravo for walking that very fine line Cath.  Bill, T-Lo is right as usual.  You could really use a refit on your suits.  You’ve got yard wide shoulders and narrow hips.  WORK it buster, while you can.  Have all your pants tailored a trifle more closely and get the bulk trimmed out of all your jackets in the mid section.

Isn’t that the same dress that Princess Victoria of Sweden wore a few months ago?

    • Anonymous

There’s been a suggestion the Catherine Walker dress choice may have been because it would’ve been Diana’s 50th the day before and Catherine Walker was so associated with her. Probably co-incidence but who knows.

Hate him, but she is adorable.

Kate looks lovely. I love her dress.

I agree about William’s suits, but he wore a really nice one-button one the other night (when Kate wore the purple dress) and finally looked like he was dressing his age.

    • Anonymous

Another lovely totally appropriate dress. Wills really does need a refit to many of his suits. These ill fitting suits are aging him even though he looks like he is wearing his father’s suits.

I think everybody is just going to have to admit and accept the Duchess has a very simple, conservative, sleek style that suits her and her new role very well.  Stop expecting her late Mother in law, it’s not her style and she is smart to steer clear of it.  She looks fantastic and the smartest part about this style she works is it will continue to work for her for decades.  Never will there be future editorials of “Remember when…” “Former fashion flubs…”.  I think she is a very, very smart young woman who can manage her image quite well.  Kudos to her.
      Now… work on the hubby!

Polka-dotted pinafore with floral hem and hot pink bow, for the win!

And that sun-coming-up little FACE!!   Be still my heart!

The little girl in question is the Govenor General of Canada’s three year old grand-daughter, fittingly named Kate :)

          • Anonymous

And I simply adore the little curtsey — such darling little girls!  Yes, Kate looks very appropriate here, as always.  Very simple, very tasteful.

I am, however, amused by something I read elsewhere, where one of their staffers said that she would be keeping her style for the tour fairly simple and would only be wearing one outfit a day.  Her first day alone, didn’t she manage to squeeze in 3 if not 4 dresses?  One outfit a day my ass!

I think Cathy is old enough (like myself) to remember the “fashion” of the 80s and to stay clear…. especially from those wing-ed hairstyles and ruffles that were so aging!  I enjoy the simple lines.

    • Anonymous

I will pretend she is wearing the dress backwards to give it the slyest edge. In any case, the dress looks beautiful on her.

    • Anonymous

After this trip, I’d like to see Cathy loosen just a bit.  And Bill needs some serious help.

    • Anonymous

She looks wonderful. And I especially love the shoes. Granted she’s shoveling dirt, but she looked great.

    • Anonymous

I think the shoes are a print or texture — yee ha! The dress is very Mad Men, until you see the back, and even then it’s still quite retro. Maybe in Royalty land retro is contempo!

The adoration of the little girls looking up at the Princess just makes this post way too adorable

    • Anonymous

I have such a girl crush on her, beginning with her mouthing “Wow!” when she walked out onto the balcony on her wedding day.  She is so game!  She looks great, love the detail on the back of the dress (altho it’s a little puckery), and I want those shoes.

The little girls’ faces are killing me. :)

Will’s suit’s are probably made by the same tailor who makes his uniforms, and have been making suits and uniforms since the Duke of Wellington. He should add another tailor, a more modern one, for his suits and jackets.

Cathy’s looking good everyday, but she’s choosing when to stand out, and when to tone it down. Visit cancer victims was on this day’s schedule.

I like that she went for a little print on the shoes. I get that simple is her thing, just wish she had added a pin or a bracelet to this look. Id love to see what a better cut suit could do for him.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

The Duchess FTW!  She’s stunning, and while the outfit could have used more interesting accessories, I think her choices, considering her position, are quite wise, striking the right balance. The Duke could use a bit of tailoring, but overall, he has been looking better as of late.  They look great together.

    • Anonymous

      Agree about his suits.
She left her butt at home, but the dress is  so adorable. Would a ponytail have been wrong with this?

      • Anonymous

I thought the same thing. Or doesn’t she really have one. Come to think of it, I don’t know how much I’ve seen her in something that suggests a bit of booty.

    • Anonymous

I love her choices here, right down to the print shoes.  And the little girls looking up in frank adulation are the icing on the cake.  I think Wills would look a lot better in general if he would ditch the tie & just wear the shirt open-neck with the suit, especially for these outdoorsy, shoveling things.

    • Anonymous

Agree- he could dress more modernly. (I had to look that up to see if it was a word!) She looks great- natch. Good outfit for shoveling dirt. I can’t wait to see what she wears in Cali.

    • Anonymous

Love those two little muffins in the last photo! They give kate the spot of color she needs!

    • Judy_J

I love that dress!  I wish it was in my closet.

    • http://www.myblackfriendsays.com myblackfriendsays

That would be so weird to be judged on what you wore every single day for the rest of your life. not bad necessarily; just weird.

      • Anonymous

Oh, I think it would be dreadful. Far worse than bad. Some of us are not cut out to be Public Figures.

    • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

I love the dress, but I believe that I am the only person on earth that doesn’t find her all that attractive!

    • Anonymous

She is lovely, as usual. Might want to cast more of a glance at the rear view when choosing her clothes (though 90-some% of the photos circulated are from the front, so that IS more important.) She’s either not curvy enough or too thin for the rear to fit as well as the front.

She may turn her attention to him in time, I suspect he’s been trained to defer to his “experts” on what he wears for public appearances and it might well be unfortunate for him to start exercising his own judgement now. Give her time.

    • Patricia Biswanger

That sweet little girl curtsying to the princess and beaming up at her — she steals the show.

    • Megan Sullivan

I LOVE her dress. She always looks so put together. I do think she could have used some color in her accessorizing.

    • Patricia Biswanger

Are we sure those are Tabitha Simmons pumps?  I looked everywhere and didn’t see anything by Tabitha Simmons that looks at all like them.  There’s a pair by Valentino that looks like them:  http://www.net-a-porter.com/product/161266

Also, the bag is already sold out!  Not surprised I guess, and not that I would have spent $200 on it anyway.

      • Patricia Biswanger

Nope, not Valentino.  I found a good picture and blew it up on my screen.  (Yes, I am like a detective on the case.)

According to the Daily Mail, those shoes are by LK Bennett.  Go all the way to the bottom of the page, to the pink box:  http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2010605/Kate-Middleton-serves-treat-reveals-talent-kitchen.html

LK Bennett seems much more her price range ($400 or so) than Tabitha Simmons (easily $1000+), so that makes some sense, but I can’t find them on the LK Bennett website either.

So am I really this obsessed, or just in work-avoidance mode?  (Yes, I have some work I have to finish this weekend!)

    • http://twitter.com/Space_Kitty Space_Kitty

I actually think she looks fantastic here.  That dress ought to be twee on a grown woman but she makes it work.  I typically prefer to restrict my comments to clothing rather than body type, but I must say that Cathy’s got some amazing legs.

*Insert minor jealous pique that she manages to look good while shoveling dirt *

      • Alyson Lamble

Indeed.  Great gams and a bazillion-dollar smile.  She’d make me ill if she weren’t so damned adorable.

      • Anonymous

And shoveling dirt awkwardly, at that.

    • http://twitter.com/Merneith Merneith

That dress suits her perfectly, but the veins in her hands are a little scary for someone so young. She obviously doesn’t have an ounce of body fat – but maybe she ought to.

    • Anonymous

The woman behind Cathy in picture #2 is wearing a dress with a print that looks like crazy person wallpaper. Like the kind that they’d look at and think she saw faces and heard voices from. And she looks like she’s enjoying Cathy’s shoveling a little too much.

      • Alyson Lamble

I believe that is the wife of the Governor-General of Canada that you’re referring to.  Apparently also grandmother to the adorable little blonde moppet in the final picture.

    • Anonymous

I love this dress. Simple done right is all too rare. Cute shoes!

Kudos to the photographer(s) for catching all the best moments, Kate’s hand to her mouth, on her hair, shoveling dirt in heels, and those sweet, enchanted little girls whose families will tell the story for generations. Again through it all, Kate’s radiant smile.

    • Anonymous

That dress is adorable,Cathy looks great! Bill… not so much. Those are some horrible britches.

    • Anonymous

Awwww, look at those little girls looking up adoringly at Cathy. Ridiculously cute!

    • Anonymous

I LOVE that dress but not on her.  Like, extremely much not on her. Jemma Mays or someone with a pixie cut like Carey Whatshername (Mulligan?).  It’s all wrong for the elegant Miz Cambridge. Too boyish and tailored.

    • meggwtw

OK guys, the “Bill and Cathy Cambridge” shtick is really annoying.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, they should switch it up to Bill and Cathy’s Excellent Adventure. ;p

O-My…she looks so good in that sheath.
I love it. Very flattering and chic. I do wish it was a different colour though. Something summery and feminine. This looks a bit too cold.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

She looks fabulous. LOVE the dress. It’s not “workmanlike” you bitches! Hillary Clinton’s pantsuits are workmanlike, Cathy C. is chic and tailored. Just because she bling out on Versace doesn’t mean she’s not fashionable. She’s true to her own style.

    • Anonymous

I love that you call them Bill and Cathy Cambridge! (Sorry Meggwtw.)

    • Anonymous

What I like about everything she wears is that, as a member of a royal family, she’s not hitting me over the head without how hot she is.  It’s nice to see someone dress with an eye to – forgive the laughably old fashioned word – decorum rather than sensationalism.  She always wears the clothes.  The clothes don’t wear her.

    • Elaine Lang

Bill is totally checking out Cathy’s arse in the dirt shoveling pic.

      • http://diaryofaconsumerpunchingbag.blogspot.com/ Laura Ann Springer

        As he should be…lol

    • Anonymous

According to my English husband, William is wearing a bullet proof vest under the suit at all these “occasions” that’s why the suits look so large and ill fitting!

    • Anonymous

The dress is figure flattering from the front, but it sags in the posterior region. Girl’s got WASP booty.

    • http://joansbooks.blogspot.com/ lilithcat

      Take a letter, Mrs. Cambridge.

    • http://diaryofaconsumerpunchingbag.blogspot.com/ Laura Ann Springer

it is a very pretty dress on her except from the back. the gathering/darting in the back just doesn’t look good to me. love the clutch and shoes too.

      • Anonymous

So glad you brought this up; I thought I was the only one! I think it’s puckering more than anything else, and ruins the whole effect…otherwise I think she looks great….

I feel a pregnancy coming on. Soon.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3CGY36NG25QFIZQOLMH7SQTKLU andrew

This look is perfection!  She’s a royal with style and ease, not trying too hard to be edgy or different. She exudes elegance.  I love the color and cut of that dress on her.  And the little bag is adorable.  How on earth did she dig in those high heels without getting stuck in the grass?

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1133424434 Maria McGarry

They look so happy together.  The contrast between them and the Monagesques is striking.

When I plant a tree I never wear a sheath, but that’s just me.

    • Anonymous

That clutch is super cute. The dress looks much more interesting (i.e. better) from the back.

Which gives good reason for where Will is looking in that 3rd photo… (i.e. at Kate’s bum)

      I don’t blame him.

      • Anonymous

One of the things I actually disliked about the dress was that it totally obliterated her bum. What bum? No evidence that she has one in this outfit.

    • Anonymous

I’m wondering if she fears looking like a pinhead if she wears her hair pulled back. Otherwise I don’t understand why it’s down so often when it would look good up or back.

    • LaurelGlenn Magrini

I wonder who held her clutch while she shovelled. I scrolled back up to see if Will was, but alas, no.

      • Anonymous

        Isn’t that what a lady-in-waiting does?

    • http://profiles.google.com/louis.xiv Dave Gallo

I think this post is entirely appropriate for the holiday weekend, since when on this side of the pond they are North American (not European) royalty. The British royal family, in Canada, is the Canadian Royal Family and this couple its future monarchs, the King and Queen of Canada.

    • margaret meyers

Wouldn’t we all like to s ee her in some different silhouettes?

    • Martha Anderson

I see an interesting pattern or detail in the shoes.  Perhaps polka-dots.  If so a thumbs up from me.

    • Anonymous

The dress is cute and all but I just really want to feed her a good ol’ pulled pork sandwich with some potato salad and a heavy helping of peach cobbler.

    • Anonymous

OK.  It’s clear Billy isn’t a fashion guy, and that’s fine.  But I think a lot of his suits look actively bad on him.  In general, Cathy looks great, but to my eye it doesn’t appear that a royal homo advisor is involved.  I really think a fashion gay in the castle would be transformative for both.

    • Anonymous

William looks extra Dorky in these pics.  Catherine looks lovely as usual.  I think she takes a few risks here and there.  She wears some very contemporary designers that a more conservative woman wouldn’t even consider.

    • Anonymous

Love her dress. That one will spawn a gazillion copies in H&M and Macys this fall.

You guys have really lost your edge.
Why spend time on these folks — they’re stodgy and uninteresting.

You have been so clever and engaging in your analysis of tv — Mad Men and Boardwalk Empire in particularly.
The attention you give to the royals is just so … obligatory. You’re way better than this.

    • Lisa

It’s one of the rare times I’m not crazy about what she has on.  A little too simple and way too drab.

    • Chandler Routman

does no one else think she needs to stop the dieting and gain some weight? i mean seriously, she look’s so terribly thin it’s insane. go eat some inn n out or mcdonalds while you’re in the states duchess…
