WERQ: Christina Hendricks

Posted on June 09, 2011

Kittens, it’s time to shout out a “WERQ!” to a gal who all too often, and all too sadly gets it wrong when she’s stepping out in front of cameras.

Christina Hendricks attends the New York premiere of Stephen Sondheim’s Company with the New York Philharmonic .

When we say an outfit doesn’t flatter a lady, that’s often taken to mean that we want her to wear something that makes her look smaller. No one could say that a horizontally striped shirt worn by someone known for her bountiful ladyhips and voluptuous boobs is a good idea if the goal is to look smaller and thinner. And guess what? She doesn’t; not really. But she looks really cute and sexy, and the shirt hits her at just the point where it accentuates her hips and gives her a really womanly look. A LOT of stylists and style commenters would disagree and say the focus is being put on the wrong places, but there’s nothing wrong with having hips and they don’t need to be hidden. Dressing to flatter, to us, means finding clothes, cuts, and silhouettes that work the best with the types of bodies the fashion world doesn’t take enough time to consider (and which most people have); it doesn’t always mean making yourself look smaller.

Plus the jacket’s cute and the hair and makeup look good (which is, sadly, not always the case with her). Many will disagree with our take here because she’s pretty much violating a long-standing rule about dressing her body type, but we think she looks sexy. Okay, yes; the purse looks cheap and the shoes seem like an odd choice, and the jeans are pulling across the crotch, but the girl needs some encouragement. You WERQ those hips, honey.

She looks great. I never would have thought something so tailored would work on her. The shoes are awful with it, though. A pair of booties would have been better.

    There’s no “The” before “Company.”

yay, this shows off her hour glass figure really well. maybe next  time she will try some color, baby steps. the hair and makeup are fab.

The musical is “Company,” not “The Company”…  I think the pants aren’t right but agree about the overall look.

. Usually Christina fails when it comes to pants, but this is a good look for her.

She looks great here. As a busty girl myself, the mere thought of a horizontally striped shirt makes me shudder, but she looks really great. I think if she didn’t have that jacket, it would be a whole different story, but this works. Agreed on the bag and shoes and I’m not convinced that’s the best shade of lipstick for her, but overall she looks cute and sexy.

This time you guys surprised me – I thought for sure this would be an OUT. I don’t think this is flattering at all. I don’t like where the jacket cuts into her and she doesn’t look curvy as much as chunky.

Agreed. Very disappointingly boring and makes her look too “hippy”.

There is something about the pairing of that shirt and that jacket that make the jacket look too small on her.

  • Anonymous

She looks great. It’s a super casual look, but it’s working for her. I’m really looking forward to seeing her (and NPH, Stephen Colbert, etc) when my local theater shows Company next week!

  • Anonymous

She looks great, and I want her outfit now. I’m built a bit like her, and I am not shy about the stripes either. She’s wearing them the right way by letting the geometric jacket cut across the lines.

  • Anonymous

I don’t like the stripes here because it looks like the jacket and accessories are meant to dress up the jeans, and so a dressier top would have made more sense. If she’s really going super casual, a more casual jacket would’ve been better. But she looks good.

The fit on the jacket is pretty awful; it’s keeping me from enjoying the outfit.  I do love the shirt across the hips, though.

As Johanna Goldberg and Judy S have pointed out (and as it says over her shoulders), the musical is called “Company.”

Don’t you know you can get your Gay Card revoked for not knowing every syllable to a Sondheim musical? ESPECIALLY since you two are arguably the original Ladies Who Lunch. ;-)

    …Another chance to disapprove,
    Another brilliant zinger,
    Another reason not to move,
    Another vodka stinger…

I think she looks adorable. As a straight guy, Christina often makes me think of one of the great lines from “Company,”
                                    “Everybody rise!”
I hope you catch my meaning and I think you do.

I think she pulls off primary colors very well. The blue helps her eyes pop. As a daughter to a woman that constantly dressed to enhance her blue eyes, I recognize it from a mile away. She looks cute. Love the hair. Ditch the cheapo purse, but I do agree green was a good pop of color with this.

I don’t object at all to the shoes and bag. I love little color pops in a black & white outfit. She looks adorable and comfortable.

Where the jacket hits is creating a nice effect with the stripes and it makes her look awesome! And I think the pop of green is kind of neat.

She’s said in interviews, she loves frills, she loves ruffles, she loves hats. These are three lovable  things, but none of them look good on her. I get it, I do. It’s hard to shift from wearing “pretty!!” to wearing flattering. But she seems to have gotten the message, at least here.

Damn, that purse does look cheap.
Stacy and Clinton would say the skinny jeans were all wrong for her body type, and I’d have to agree. They make for one too many emphasis on her hips. She needs a straight-leg trouser.
The top and jacket look cute.

I think the stripes draw attention up to her face.  And I don’t mind the skinny jeans.  The ensemble’s general simplicity serves her better than some of the froo-fraw she’s tried to wear in the past.  She’s red-hot-curvy.  It’s not like the public doesn’t know.

She does look pretty good but isn’t she under-dressed for a premiere in New York? And isn’t it summer?
Either way I agree with most of your points boys. She looks better – as most of us do – when she isn’t hanging out of her clothes. I don’t want her covered up, I just want her pulled together. And this outfit does that though it might be pulling a little too much in some places.

I think she looks terrific. Love the lipstick, love the hair, and I even love the shoes. This is a great casual look for her, and she’s wonderfully pulled together.  I hope she’s finally able to find a dressier look that works this well for her.

Also, I don’t care if she’s carrying a cheap bag. Maybe it has sentimental value. Not that she has to explain herself.

It’s a great big step in the right direction.  But those jeans are just not quite right and the shoes aren’t too good either.  I would have  loved the top and jacket on her with a pair of leather pants and colorful strappy sandals.

I love this look on her! I especially like that it puts the lie to all the times people (myself included) have told her she really needs to stick with retro-influenced silhouettes. She looks great.

I even like the idea of a green purse – that’s just the wrong green purse.

Can I rant for a moment?  The hubs and I took a trip to NYC and got tickets for a Broadway play.  I made my husband wear a shirt and tie.  I wore a nice dress.  We’re standing in line with folks in jeans and tee-shirts.

When did this happen?  When did we become a nation of slobs?  I simply refuse to accept it.  So on that note, while Christina Hendricks looks well put together, my heart sinks that I should celebrate the fact that there are no holes in her very expensive designer jeans and at least she wore a jacket.

Yes, I’m becoming a fuddy duddy.

adorable! And I’ve got to say, TLo, that I keep coming back for more because you are so consistently body positive (not to mention ethnically diverse). Love your takes on the fashion world.

  • Lattis

She looks cute as a bug’s ear in these pictures. I would like to see how she looks from the back  . . . does she look as good going as she does coming? To me, that is the real test of those bold black stripes.

She’s so pretty, and it’s nice to see an actress with some curves.  WERQ it Chrissy!

  • http://profiles.google.com/galalefey Gabriella Ripoll

She looks adorable. If I recall, she wore a horizontal stripe shirt at one point on Mad Men and looked adorably 60s mod french, with a little scarf around her head, I think?
That is a frowning crotch, though. When jeans make faces like that at me in the fitting room, I fling them aside dramatically with the full weight of my scorn. Frown at me, will they. I advocate Christina do the same in the future – she too often lets her pants make silly faces. Like those unspeakable pants from way back when- but we shall not speak of them, because today is a day to rejoice and WERQ.

  • Anonymous

Very cute, but the jacket looks a bit too short. Oh, who am I kidding? I’d kill to look like her.

  • Grace Ritt

Christina Hendricks is a big, sexy lady, and she shouldn’t have to make herself look as tiny as January Jones. I love this look.

I’m a sucker for a great striped shirt so this is happy-making for me. I want her hair! The jeans, however, are not appropriate for a theatre premiere. I wish she had stepped it up one notch.

YAAAY!!!  Finally!  Way to go, girl!  Yeah yeah, horizontal stripes are generally a no-no on boobalicious girls (I can’t wear ‘em either on my bazongas, so I can sympathize), but she has just enough showing that she made it work.  She looks really cute!

    1. You boys should definitely try to go see this while it’s in theaters — it’s playing at the Ritz East downtown and a handful of places in the suburbs. (The full list of venues is here — http://www.screenvision.com/s/showing/Company/ – scroll down to PA.) Company is a fabulous musical, and as another show queen mentioned earlier, they’ll revoke your gay card for not knowing the entirety of “Ladies Who Lunch.” They also filmed the Broadway revival a few years ago, which starred the delicious Raul Esparza as protagonist Bobby. Although that production’s director took an avant garde approach to the material and had all the actors playing their own instruments, which might be a little off-putting if you’re not already familiar with the show.

    2. For the post-Tonys fashion wrap-up you guys did last year, you featured exclusively actors who were well known for their work on TV and film. As a musical theater major and budding show queen, I would love it if you tossed in a few tried-and-true Broadway stars for good measure. :)

I’d love to see it! I wonder if it will air on PBS eventually, or a DVD? (hope so)

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_ZMU2QQUTAUEPU23MUTZBQ5W2PI Peter

At this point, I really think it’s only going to end up playing in theaters. New York producers are trying out this new idea of showing New York concerts, plays, and operas in movie theaters across the country (the Met has been broadcasting some of their major operas for the last few years, and the current Broadway revival of “The Importance of Being Earnest” is playing in select theaters right now). I think it’s a brilliant idea and a great way of making the arts in New York available to people who wouldn’t be able to access them otherwise. It’s the same concept behind Live From Lincoln Center on PBS (which aired “Light in the Piazza” and “South Pacific” in recent years, and I’m so grateful for that). But that’s just it — if they make it commercially available on DVD, no one will pay to go see it in person. And since the Raul Esparza “Company” was just put out on DVD a few years ago, I doubt this one will make it as well.
