Royal Watch: Cathy Cambridge Gets Sporty

Posted on June 28, 2011

Bill and Cathy took a break from standing in front of large groups of people in order to sit in front of a large group of people and catch some tennis.

Catherine, the Duchess of Cambridge, and Prince William attend the 2011 Wimbledon Tennis Championships in London. Catherine is wearing a Temperley London dress.

Temperley London ‘Moriah’ Dress

As per usual with Duchess Cathy’s off-the-rack dresses, this one sold out immediately. And why not? It’s an adorable little dress. We don’t love the weirdness of the straps, especially from the back, but the tiers and the pleating are sassy and yet still kind of traditionally Wimbledon.

That would look terrible on a normal sized person.  That first layer hits right at the hips.  There will be a lot of disappointed girls after putting that one on.

    • Anonymous

And I was about to say that it looks as though she had finally (and thankfully) eaten a sandwich… albeit a very small one.  Perhaps it is just the cut.

  • http://twitter.com/maggie162 Maggie

Damn, could she please be caught on camera saying something awful so I can hate her?  Love the dress (even the weird straps), love the styling, love the husband.

    • Anonymous

Well, it looks like that lady behind her hates her!

  • Anonymous

They could not be any more perfect. Love them.

  • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

Dude has gotten so much better looking since the wedding!  How is it possible?  Is there a new haircut involved here?  Every time I see a picture of them, he looks great.  Maybe it’s because I never saw so many pictures, and now I’m getting used to him?

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_64HSRZWCSJ5RBFGCWDLFQOICYM G

Yes.  And I probably shouldn’t say this, but as long as  he keeps his mouth closed, he’s a winner.

    • Rand Ortega

I think it’s because William doesn’t want to be constantly upstaged by his wife like his father was. It’s a good incentive to step up your game a bit, if such things matter to you. Which, given his grooming & attire of late, it obviously does.

    • Anonymous

I agree. I can only conclude that getting laid regularly agrees with him.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5X4B3NBE3NUGS3OY5IRI645NMI Mrs. Joe

It looks like maybe he has gotten his hair cropped a little closer to the head on the top – thus reducing the appearance of his baldness.  My guess?  He saw all the pre-wedding photos and wanted to do something about that…

  • http://twitter.com/anovelgirl J. Watt

Adorable. And he looks better and better. She’s done wonders for Will.

  • Anonymous

I don’t like the straps in the back, but she looks fantastic here.  I love seeing the royal arms for a change :-)

Is it just me or does Wills keep getting hotter in every photo?  She is taking him from a 6 to an 8 or a 9.  That photo of him in the glasses smiling at her is just rawr.   He can fill out a suit nicely too.

    • Anonymous

Agree . . . In the category of British royalty, it looks like there’s new meaning to the term ‘Restoration’!

I thought he looked at least as good as she did at the Irish Guards event the other day:  He cut quite a dashing figure in his black uniform frock coat (cinched waist!).

Also – these two just seem to *enjoy* each other so much … a pleasure to see anywhere, but esp. among the Windsors.

    • Anonymous

yes, he rocks his clothes, as proper as they might have to be….

  • Anonymous

Definitely a great dress for Wimbeldon. Tennis whites and what-not. Can I tell you? He looks hot! William was always a good looking kid, but I think marriage agrees with him.

  • Anonymous

Are those covered Pringles in case she needs a snack?

    • Monkey Toe

At best those could be rice cakes–girlfriend has not even seen a pringle in months.

  • Anonymous

I rather like the weird straps, and I’d like the whole look better if the top layer of tiers went away, but the pleating is tres sassy.  Game, set, match.

  • Judy_J

I quite like that dress—it’s perfect for an afternoon at Wimbledon.  Prince Wills just looks better and better.  His mum would be so proud.

  • Anonymous

Cha-cha-cha! Pretty daring length for a royal! They both look great and very fit.

  • Anonymous

I love this dress. It’s really quite lovely for the occasion. She looks like a stylish little confectionery treat. He looks smashing and dashing as well.

  • Anonymous

Love the dress, love her, love all the smiles you see on both of them…

Can’t wait to read your take on her attire for the Canada/US trip — should be lots o’ good fun!

  • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

Off-the-rack but it’s still 400 pounds *on sale*.

  • Amie Curie

Girl loves a theme party. She was adorable in military buttons for a military function; she’s adorable in pleated tennis whites for Wimbledon… but it’s getting a little out of hand.

    • Anonymous

I think it’s part of being a Royal. They have to make all these symbolic gestures since the symbolic is the bulk of their job description.

    • Anonymous

It isn’t unlike our own first lady who wears hints of African prints when she goes to Africa.  You’ll also see her in Asian inspired items when she is visiting those countries.  I think it is all part of the job of being 1st lady and/or future queen.

  • Anonymous

F-ing adorable. Even the pierogi straps.

  • Anonymous

I wish she’d put her hair up once in a while. It was a long hot game (I saw it) so it would have been the perfect occasion not to haveal that hair on your shoulders; plus it would have shown the strap treatment better.

And honey, as someone said here, you a sandwich accompanied by a milkshake.

  • Anonymous

That is one fab little dress!  I love the details, all of it.  And may we just talk about how HOT he looks here?  HEL-lo Prince Charming-my-pants-off!

  • Anonymous

That’s a great dress. Wills looks fabulous too.

  • Anonymous

Love Kate’s dress. I like the shoulder straps. The dress would be sort of ordinary without them.  She is really fit. In the photo where she is clapping you can see her highly defined biceps. So can we stop the Kate needs a sandwich comments.

I love Will’s sunglasses. Does anyone know who designed them?

Is that Billy Jean King behind them?

    • suzq

Sure looks like it to me.

    • Patty Poulter

Yes it is her! Yesterday (June 26) was the 50th anniversary of her first Wimbledon title – at the age of 17!

    • Patty Poulter

    • http://profiles.google.com/yhawkins13 Yolanda Hawkins

Yes that’s Billie Jean King.  And I agree with the sandwich comments.  She obviously works out to get that definition to her arms.  Love the dress and Wills has gotten better looking since he wed Duchess Cathy.  Love those sunglasses Will.

    • Anonymous

BJK was *huge* and had a ton of cultural influence back in the day.  She’s a hero!

  • Anonymous

The Cambridges look spectacular. They are two incredibly pretty people. The dress? Fantastic. Bill’s suit and shades? Ditto.

The big question these photos brought up for me is this one: Why is Billie Jean King wearing a grandmotherly black dress and a string of pearls?  To Wimbledon???  Totally inappropriate and wrong on so many counts. And could someone please tell her that letting her grey hair show would be preferable to dying it with shoe polish? She doesn’t need to try to be a fashion plate, but she could look like the sports legend she is instead of someone’s clueless great-aunt.

    • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

I’m willing to let the woman who was instrumental in moving a feminist agenda in the early 70s and getting Title IX passed wear whatever she wants to Wimbledon.  Especially when she was there to be honored for the 50th anniversary of her first title.  She was sitting in the Royal Box so there’s likely a dress code, but since she’s 67 and never claimed to be stylish, anyway.

      • Anonymous

Like I said, she doesn’t need to try to be fashionable, but I wish that when in the public spotlight, Billie Jean wouldn’t look so frumpy. I’m a big fan of the woman, her feminist agenda, and her work on behalf of Title IX. Which is why I’d like her to look better than she does here.

        • MilaXX

Eh’ I don’t mind it so much BJK looked pretty much like that even when she was young. I doubt she’ll obtain a fashion gene this late in life.

          • Anonymous

What MilaXX & Dina dV said. It’d be like expecting Martina Navratilova to start getting all girly & Zsa Zsa Gabor as she gets older. Ain’t gonna happen.

        • Anonymous

I’m confused, you state you are a big fan of a “feminist agenda” but then finish the thought by wishing she “looked better”>  Isn’t it one of the basics of feminism that a woman (or man) should be judged soleley on the basis of their accomplishments, thoughts and actions and less on how “pretty” she looks?  The mere gripe that she should look prettier defeats the entire premise that a great athlete and social activist is just that and should be honored for those things alone.  Confusing premise you advocate…..

          • Elaine Lang

Yes, it would be hypocritical to expect her to dress for the pleasure of “the male gaze” as they say.   And, how old is BJK?  (OK, Behold the power of Google:   She’s 67!)  I think she looks great!  I’m assuming the camera just caught her in a moment of concentrating on the match, not that she scowled the whole time.   At most you could say that you’d have hoped to see such a luminary smiling, but in terms of her “looking better?”   God, please grant that I look that healthy at 67!

  • Anonymous

I like how the straps almost have a tennis ball theme.

  • Anonymous

I think they both look great, though William a bit too much like a secret service agent with those shades.

  • suzq

I love everything about that dress on her.  Of course it would look horrible on most people…maybe even me.  Besides, I would have spilled strawberry juice on it by the time I sat down.  But Kate needn’t worry about such things.

  • http://www.myblackfriendsays.com myblackfriendsays

    I like Wills’ sunglasses.

  • Anonymous

I can’t help but notice the woman in the back of several photos seemingly scowling at Kate the entire time! Maybe that’s just me though!

And the hair…does she EVER have a bad hair day? A frizz? A flyaway?! Really, I love them both, but come on girl, give us normal gals hope!

    • Anonymous

I believe the woman is stripes in the pics is Ilanna Kloss, BJKs partner.

      • Anonymous

That’s what I was thinking but I couldn’t spell her name.  I don’t think her at-rest face is a cheery looking one (though she’s got a great grin) so it’s more likely she’s just as fascinated with the former Ms. Middleton as the rest of us are, she just gets to inspect her up close rather than via the Internet.

  • Anonymous

He looks really good, she looks adorable but still hasn’t had that sandwich.

    • Anonymous

As several have mentioned enough with the sandwich comments.

    • Anonymous

Oh shut up with the sandwich stuff already!  Look at her muscle tone, she is a clearly in shape and fit woman who is thin.  An anorexic woman would not be able to maintain those biceps and tones.

  • Anonymous

Very cute dress from the front.  Ok from the back, but not really a ‘sit down for a long time’ kind of back. But I’m sure the Royal Steamer can take care of that!

    • Anonymous

Great point about the back.  I cannot imagine how it looks so wrinkle free if she was sitting through the match?

  • Anonymous

I don’t particularly like this outfit.  I don’t find it very flattering either.    He looks good

  • MilaXX

That is a really cute dress & I like the weirdness of the straps. I think it elevates it from being another boring, white dress. BTW, Will’s sunglasses are nice as well.

  • Anonymous

And see, I commented to myself, “self, that’s what makes this dress special” regarding the straps, especially from the back. For me the tiers were not as cute. But, come on, she’s 29 (30?), newly married, it’s summer and they are having fun! And yeah, he looks good, too.

  • Anonymous

    Oh…what a surprise…Will is wearing a dark blue suit!  ;)

Cathy looks like she’s ready to jump on court and play a few matches.  I’m not lovin’ it.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

They both look terrific. God, is she perfect or what? Movie star looks, beautiful hair, naturally slim, and always seems happy to be there representing the Family. Never frightened or disdainful (like her sainted mother in law).

Why do men wear suits to a tennis match? That just seems silly.

    • Anonymous

Dress code in the Royal Box, men in suits, jacket and ties, ladies on skirts or dresses.  No exceptions.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=6416893 Jenna Kuhmann

I need one of those fitness magazines to do a special on how to get her arms.

  • Anonymous

I guess it doesn’t get that hot in England — if I wore that dress at mid-day in a New York summer, I’d be a crumpled mess in ten minutes. Of course, that is probably why she is the future Queen of England and I am…not. And he looks pretty cool and collected himself. They’re both just yummy. It isn’t fair : D

    • Anonymous

It’s been really hot down there this week. He must’ve been sweltering in a suit jacket.

  • http://twitter.com/starrika Ali

Can we cut it out with the sandwich/milkshake comments already? As you can see from her defined arms – she’s not wasting away here. She’s slim and athletically built. Naturally thin people exist, and it’s really friggen rude to constantly be harping on their size. It’s not appropriate when a woman is a 6 or a 16. Can we stick to talking about the clothes/accessories please?

    • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

      I agree with you, Ali.

    • Anonymous

Very well put, Ali. I was thinking exactly the same thing. *She’s slim and athletically built.* Where do the rest of ya’ll live? I see women like this all the time in Colorado.

    • http://twitter.com/Megan_Burgess Megan

      I agree a thousand times.

  • http://shortgirlsays.blogspot.com DiscoBra

Fabulous dress but poor Andy Murray’s girlfriend Kim was also in white, Kate 1 – Kim 0.

  • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

I think there are one too many details on the dress that take it from cute to fussy.  Focus on either the straps or the tiers but combined and she looks like a wedding cake.  A very pretty one because Kate will never not be very pretty, but the dress is a bit much for a sporting event.  Even Wimbledon.

  • Anonymous

    OMG no hat!

  • Anonymous

    Adorable!
William is looking very handsome. They really are a stunning couple.

  • Anonymous

How cute is he in those sunglasses? Yeow. Love her dress.

  • Anonymous

I’m going to make a comment and then duck – it is so nice to see a young woman with no tattos visible. Just a classy young lady,

    • Anonymous

No need to duck!  That is the thoughts of many, I am sure.  I attended a wedding (under duress) the other week and all four of the bridesmaids, in straplees dresses, had visible tattoss on the backs and shoulders.  It looked horrible, cheap and tacky.  I was shocked the bride chose the dresses until she removed her veil and guess what was on her shoulders and back… more ink!  I just don’t get it, buy a lovely drawing or painting and hang it on your foyer wall.

      • Anonymous

I know, I am older (almost 50) but I just don’t like those big honking tattos on womens’ backs and shoulders. A small discreet one in a private place is fine, in my old lady view, but the Jolie tattoes and even Heidi Klum with that writing up her arm, I don’t get it.

  • http://profiles.google.com/denise.alden Denise Alden

Move over so I can duck with you:  it is nice, isn’t it?

  • Anonymous

I like it! Kind of dressy for a tennis match, but I guess that’s part of the deal when you’re royalty. I like the weirdness of the straps. It keeps the dress from being too cutesy.

  • Anonymous

She looks terribly cute and still appropriate. She’s either a genius or her advisors are. (And, of course, there are the genes and the work it takes to keep an easy-to-dress figure).

Plus/minus for being Future King of England: + Great seats at Wimbledon; + I bet you can get to see any match you request; – You have to wear a suit and tie to go to a tennis match in the summer (I mean, I know it’s English Summer, not Southwestern United States, but still).

She’s got it better than he does, on this one.

  • Anonymous

I love Temperley’s dresses.  This one is a little fussy but still pretty fab.  And it looks great on her and is very appropriate for Wimbledon.  As alway, her hair is just gorgeous.  I think she looks fit and healthy – her arms look very strong and muscular, not skeletal.  And her mega-watt smile remains her best accessory.  Wills looks hot.  The two of them always seem to be having the best time together.  They seem to genuinely enjoy each other’s company.  I read somewhere that the Firm was eager to get her out doing public appearances as quick and as often as possible, given her popularity.  But she was reluctant to make appearances on her own right away so Wills apparently went to bat for her and got them to back off.  She won’t have to make any public appearances without him for the first year of their marriage.  Such a contrast to his mother, who didn’t have anyone watching her back.

    • Anonymous

God, somewhere internally I must be a 13 year old with too much free time. Because I really want to believe this sweet little story is true, not just celeb gossip.

  • Anonymous

i’d hate to be her the first day they have to go out together in public after a big ugly fight. the kind of fight you realize is going to be replayed for as long as you’re married. with such close scrutiny we’ll all see it and feel it. yuck. as for the dress, it’s darling from the front. the back reminds me of water spraying structures at a kiddie spray park.

  • Ella B. Mudge

Did Billie Jean use black shoe polish on her hair?  Holy cats.  And I’ll guess Wills is wearing glasses made for British military officers.  Cathy looks lovely, as per usual, but I’ll get ready to duck the flying tomatoes and say that she is starting to bore me.  However, her job is to show up and look beautiful, and she does that quite well.

    • Anonymous

I must find a way to become a commissioned military officer in the Royal Air force to score those sunglasses.

  • Anonymous

How is it that at 29 she is dressing with no flaws?  Ok maybe a bit literal here with the white and rounds on the straps, however it is a bit fashion forward and it looks great at Wimbledon.  Does anyone know if she styles herself?  I know she does her own make up and hair, but wonder about her batting 1.000 with the clothes.

    • Anonymous

I just read recently, can’t remember where, that she doesn’t have a stylist, but does use personal shoppers at Selfridges and one other London store. I’m sure other more Cathy Cambridge-savvy minions can fill in the blanks.

      • Anonymous

I think her overall look stems from the years she’s been a devotee of the T&Lo brand.

        • Adrienne Royer

She also shops at Harvey Nichols, an upscale British department store. She uses the personal shoppers at Harvey Nicks and Selfridges.

  • Anonymous

I like the whole shebang, but agree that it wouldn’t work on most normal women.  But how ’bout the broad in stripes who is watching more Duchess than tennis?!

I love the picture of William staring straight forward with the shades on as if to say, “I’m Prince William, bitches. Deal with it.”

  • http://profiles.google.com/insertbrackets Tory Adkisson

She looks great. Those weird straps make the dress that much more interesting and vivacious!

  • Anonymous

She looks just right for attending a tennis match.  It’s just this side of a tennis outfit.  Why can’t the commentariat just leave it alone about her figure? The derogatory variations on eating a sandwich are just as annoying as derogatory comments about weight gain. gaaa!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EDM7P24M3L56KRCYKOEJCMXR2M Nilda

Interesting how he had been looking less and less handsome.  She seems to be his most flattering accessory because he’s been looking great every time he’s photgraphed with her.

    • Anonymous

Agreed.  Of course, I often say my favorite sexy thing on a man is a wedding ring.  It just makes them irrestiable……..  That and a carseat.  Or diaper bag……  You get the idea.

    • Anonymous

I still maintain the opinion that it was all in the paparazzi.  Before Kate, we (in the US) mostly saw him through paparazzi who wanted to ridicule him.  So they chose the bad pictures.  Now they’re popular, and the good pictures are what’s selling.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

Love the straps – it’s really cute on her.

  • Anonymous

Did she just get an inch or two cut off her gorgeous hair?  It looks very slightly shorter.  Maybe in preparation for her Canada trip — although she’s taking her hairdresser with her (oh noes! what are Mom and Pippa going to do while he’s out of the country?), so it’s not like she won’t have perfect hair every second of the trip.  Sigh.  Anyway, she looks adorable here, as does he.  And she’s a very, VERY sporty and athletic young woman, which explains her figure.  I can only hope that, like a normal woman, she gains a few pounds when she produces the heir and the spare, as we know she will do just perfectly, of course.  I’d hate her, but I just can’t bring myself to.  She and William look so in love and so happy together, what’s to hate?

    • Anonymous

Also, I think I look at too many pictures of her, given that I’ve paid that much attention to her perfect hair.  Ah well, that’s her job, is to be looked at and envied, right?

These poor people can’t wear casual clothes even to a tennis match?  I know, the other folks are “dressed” too, but really?  A suit and tie?
