Royal Watch: Cathy Cambridge Gets Militant

Posted on June 25, 2011

The Cambridges stepped out for one of those things that they’re obligated to step out for, darlings. Let’s see how Cathy did.

Prince William, Duke of Cambridge and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge attend the Irish Guards Medal Parade at the Victoria Barracks in Windsor, England. Catherine is wearing an Alexander McQueen coat.

Alexander McQueen Pre-Fall 2011 Collection/Model: Juju Ivanyuk (NATHALIE)

WERQ it, Duchess-style, girl! How funny is it that her coat looks more classically military than his, what with his adorable ruffles? And please, if you’re going to get all upset because we made fun of the Duke’s ruffled coat, we reserve the right to laugh and tell you to lighten up (just as we do whenever someone gets upset that we call her “Cathy Cambridge”). We have no idea why his coat is like that and we don’t really care. HER coat looks FABULOUS and that’s all that matters. The shamrock was a nice touch. The hat still disappoints, though. And soldier boy ass never goes out of style.

She must be over the ring. This is the first time we’ve seen her in public where she wasn’t constantly drawing attention to it.

    Wow, what a gorgeous coat!

  • Margaret Schultz

    I like the hat!

    • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

I do, too.  The proportions work with the coat so it ties the whole look together.  Everything is a different shade of navy, but rather than be abrasive it all looks pulled together and chic, even if the occasion called for conservative.

Agree. The hat can take over – become a statement piece, inappropriate at an event like this. She and Will are there to honor the troops, not draw attention from them.

  • Alyson Lamble

Love it.  And I really love that she did away with that silly cutout, which is not only ugly, but also impractical.  Know what I love most about her though?  Girlfriend SMILES.  A LOT.  Any woman with a smile like hers makes whatever she’s wearing that much better.

    • Anonymous

Agreed!  She has a fantastic smile, it seems genuine, I am thrilled to see it so often.

    • Anonymous

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of her where she is not smiling!! So she is either the happiest woman in the world, or the phoniest, and since her smile seems so genuine, I would say the happiest!! What’s not to love about her life? She is not Diana, married to Charles, thank goodness!!

    • Judy Raddue

Thinking the same thing!  She always looks like she’s having the time of her life, but without a single drop of pretension.  I can’t help but get the sense that they truly are best friends.  She’s dutifully walking behind him but, in the second she’s actually in front.  Reminds me of a lovely moment I caught after the wedding: As their car passed under a stone bridge/arch, out of the public’s view but not the live feed, he grabbed her hand, letting go as soon as they passed through.

  • Michelle Prahl

Love it. LOVE IT. As a military wife, I WANT it. How many months of deployment pay do you think I’d have to save to buy it? :) Although, seriously honey, you are past needing a sandwich, it’s called a milkshake. You need more than one.

    • Anonymous

Yep, way too skinny these days. I thought she’d put it back on after the wedding but clearly she’s gotten addicted to the euphoric rush you get from starvation diets. Back when she first met Will, she wasn’t a thin girl. Not particularly chubby, but definitely not thin. Maybe she feels like she’s in competition with her very skinny sis, Pippa.

  • All For You Sophia

Gorgeous!! I like the modification on the coat, much more duchess-y. Also adore the clutch, she looks very very smart!

  • Anonymous

“Tlo said: We have no idea why his coat is like that”

I do. He’s British. And it looks like he’s got spurs on his boots too.

As for her coat – I LOVE it. Nina Garcia just tweeted a picture of McQueen’s window earlier today, with that coat in it:
http://www.whosay.com/ninagarcia/photos/41435 and I was thinking, ‘I WANT IT!’  I would love to have seen Cathy wear it like its pictured on the model, but I guess that’s too fashion forward for this event.

I looked for, but couldn’t find the reason behind the coat…so, do tell! Maybe it’s something other than “It’s a British thing”…but maybe if you say it (with lovely accent and all) I would understand and need no further explanation.

aaah, if only I lived somewhere where I could need a fabulous McQueen coat and not in 90-degree weather ALL year round…

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F3HKIK7MIJMBDAQBDWEAQDTXUM theneva

It’s the black ceremonial uniform of a colonel of the Irish Guards. He was recently made a colonel of the Irish Guards and wore the formal red mounted officer’s uniform to his wedding. The shamrock that the duchess has on was also more than “a nice touch,” it’s the emblem for the Guards and on loan from the regiment. It’s also been worn by Queen Elizabeth and Princess Anne.

I can’t speak for GT, obviously, but “He’s British” may refer to the fact that while all armies love to have uniforms for every occasion, the British army are particularly nice about them. Regimental dress uniforms used to vary wildly and every variation had (and still has) special significance to that regiment. Unfortunately, military uniforms are not my forte so I can’t give a more detailed explanation than that. :(

Who gets upset when you call her “Cathy Cambridge”?  I think it’s hilarious.

    • Anonymous

      AGREED!

    • Anonymous

I think it is a funny tag as well.  I don’t recall seeing comments taking T & Lo to task for this, does anyone else?

    • Anonymous

It bugs me a little because she already has a nickname. If she didn’t go by “Kate”, then I would think it’s as funny as calling Queen Elizabeth “Betty”. That always cracks me up. But what’s the point of calling her “Cathy”?

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F3HKIK7MIJMBDAQBDWEAQDTXUM theneva

        This, times a thousand.

        • Anonymous

Well I roll my eyes when I read comments like this. Who cares? It’s for fun

          Heidi Klum=Frau Seal
          Victoria Beckham=Vicki Posh
          Michelle Obama=Shelley O

It’s been our schtick since Day One to give people cheeky nicknames. No one’s obligated to think it’s funny, but you should probably lighten up just a skosh. “Established nicknames?” What a ridiculous idea.

      • http://twitter.com/leasetegn Lea Setegn

She doesn’t go by Kate, or at least that’s what I remember. The British tabs gave her that nickname when they dubbed her “Waity Katie.”

        • Anonymous

Thanks Lea, for clearing that up. I had no idea. In that case, “Cathy” it is.

  • Mary O’Neill

Eh.  The coat… it’s a little…. obvious, no?  Also, I am really really really really Over the nude hose and sensible pumps.  I know that she has to wear hose, but I always feel like hers come out of one of those plastic eggs.  I also know that there is a less…. secretarial pump out there, somewhere.  Some interest in the heel, perhaps?  Maybe a patent?  Something?!?

    • Anonymous

I hear what you are saying but at these events honoring the military men & women the focus really should be understated on her part.  It would be crass and inappropriate for her to dress as if she was going to a flashy party.  The soldiers have been deployed in war zones, lives have been lost.  Dignified understatement is the order of the day.  I suspect she breaks free on non-official events & parties.

    • Anonymous

I think the shoes are fabulous in their own way.  Unadorned, sure, and they match the dress, but I love that the sole and heel are black, and they’re cut on a beautiful line along her foot.

I wish the hat had been more angular, like a true pillbox with a flat top.  I think that would have worked better with all the lines of the coat.

      • Anonymous

I like that it echoes the soldier’s berets in shape. Whether that’s deliberate or not I don’t know, but I think it might be.

    • http://www.facebook.com/notadouche Jeffrey D Foldenauer

ummm because it sounds better than ‘Kate Cambridge’

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F3HKIK7MIJMBDAQBDWEAQDTXUM theneva

        Not really, no.

  • MilaXX

    I think she looks adorable.

  • Anonymous

I like her coat, but I think I would have liked it better for an event where there aren’t actual members of the military in actual military uniforms. Her coat is much more masculine than his with its goofy ruffles. She is skeletal but beautiful.

    • bookish

I feel the same way, that her coat would have worked better at a different event where William wasn’t in uniform. All I can think when I see her standing next to him is that her buttons belong on his coat and his ruffles belong on hers.

  • http://verenahafner.wordpress.com/ Verena

OK, the hat doesn’t go with the rest. That aside, I don’t like the coat that much. I mean, I LOVE the coat itself but obviously they thought she was even skinnier than she already is because the material pulls across her stomach. I don’t quite understand why someone with relatively broad shoulders and NO hips would accentuate her shoulders and play down the hips even more. She looks like an inverted triangle.

  • http://onebluetree.blogspot.com/ Sara L.

I actually think he looks incredibly hot in that coat. And I have never thought that about him, ever, so I guess ruffles do it for me. I think it is awesome.

She looks amazing as always. Love that pin.

  • Anonymous

I love her coat and I love her hat.  She has really good head & hair for these smaller hats, very suitable for the coat and event.  As for her ring “obsession”, as you refer to it, I don’t think it ever existed so it isn’t over.  If the camera angle were different in some of these shots the ring would be every bit as conspicious as in earlier posts.  It’s a big, pretty ring, she carries a purse, the ring is going to be prominent.  Get over it.
And…. I LOVE his pretty, pretty coat but I would have paired it with a skirt and a more statement hat.

    • Anonymous

I agree on the ring and direction of the camera, to a point. She may still have a ‘ring obsession’ but the shots here only vaguely suggest it. I’d call it less of an obsession and more ‘meeting expectations.’

    • Anonymous

I agree, Perhaps the ring obsession is more down to the photographers than her! Hard for a ring that size not to be pretty visible!

  • Anonymous

She looks fab but is in need of a few good meals.

  • http://twitter.com/ShelfAfterlife Shelf Afterlife

Beautiful coat, I personally like the hat.  Man…is she ever skinny!

  • Sara__B

Please keep showing us photos of the Cambridges, together or alone. They always bring a smile to my face, perhaps because they look so genuinely happy, and she is so elegant and lovely. Thanks, guys!

I worked a red carpet movie premier in Beverly Hills last night for some Italian movie. No clue what the movie was or who anyone in the room was (they were mostly Italians), but I saw a few celebrity types (though no one I recognized as “famous” besides a soap actor). I’m dying to see if anyone there will make it into this blog. :)

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3CGY36NG25QFIZQOLMH7SQTKLU andrew

Perfection head to toe.  Love those shoes and personally love that her legs aren’t bare.  Sorry, but the hosiery seems fine to me.  And the hat looks good for the event, as does the divine military-style  coat.  They both look so relaxed and happy.  she doesn’t have those haunted eyes Diana had, and I hope she never develops them.  Keep smiling, CC.

    • MilaXX

She does look happy, even among what sometimes looks like the most boring of ceremonial events.  I hope she keeps that smile.

  • Anonymous

She looks fabulous. So does he. They’re such a great couple. It’s fun to see what a glamorous couple wears to events without being able to/wanting to look trashy.

    • akprincess72

I know, appropriateness CAN look awesome!

Gorgeous, but don’t you think it’s a little too on-the-nose?  She’s not IN the military, so it looks like she’s pretending that she is.

    • Anonymous

It’s certainly more subtle than what her late MIL wore to Sandhurst in 1987

      http://www.life.com/image/76214686

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Yeah, I don’t feel like she’s pretending to be in the military at all.  For one thing, if any military in the world had a female uniform as stylish and fabulous as that coat, we would have all known about it long before now.

        I think it’s perfectly appropriate.

      • Anonymous

Well, to be fair to Diana, it WAS the 80′s.

        • Anonymous

True.   The Princess of Wales was definitely OTT during 80s but I loved everything she wore  and this outfit  has always been one of my favorites.  It’s so Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy.

  • Jeremy Porta

I love how thin she is!

  • Anonymous

Love the coat and some of the modifications.  I would have kept the sleeves long, though.  But I’m picky.  She’s such a beautiful woman and she dresses wonderfully.

  • Megan Patterson

McQueen coat is gorgeous of course. But man, if they made that ruffled coat for ladies I would wear it in a hot second!

  • http://twitter.com/aidanboleyn Aidan B

Stunning. I am a sucker for a military coat anyway, but she looks flawless.

  • Anonymous

“Cathy Cambridge” just totally cracks me up! I swear, people need to get a life.

Can we talk about the guy in the camouflage? His butt definitely stole THAT photo. If he’s as hot from the front, her smile is understandable.

As to the ring, you guys keep acting as if SHE was flashing the ring. Don’t you think the photographers were saying “show us your ring!”? It sure looked that way.

love the coat, but going for a military style at a military parade is just so predictable, and borders on costumey. the shoes, once again are ridiculously secretarial. sorry, but slapping on mcqueen because it’s mcqueen, does not a stylish woman make.

  • Anonymous

She is just lovely (but skinny and tired-looking still) and she has great, classic taste. Very Grace Kelly. He looks great when he has a hat on. When he doesn’t – yikes!! I”d make him wear it all of the time!

Fab coat and she looks lovely although still very, very slim to the point of wasting. The hat is silly.

This is the emblem of the Irish Guards and one of the flowers included in the lace detail of her wedding dress. The brooch was loaned to her by the regiment and has previously been worn by Princess Anne and the Queen Mother.

    Interesting note about her clutch:

Description from the Anya Hindmarch site:

‘This Marano is crafted from Shagreen (stingray) set on a pale gold box clutch. Features clip clasp closure with discreet bow logo, suede lined inner with card pocket.’

    • Anonymous

Thank-you, I was wondering about it but far too lazy to look it up.

  • Anonymous

Love the coat and the shoes. Can think of hats I’d prefer, but it’s o.k.

Perplexed why her coat appears to be pulling across the front when she’s standing with her arms at her side – surely neither she nor anyone else thinks she should be “just a tad thinner”?  I will choose to believe that it was tailored to her when she was at her wedding-stressed thinnest and she’s put on a few pounds (though one can’t tell by looking.)

I know lots of us would enjoy more adventurous fashion choices, but I do love looking at someone looking marvelous in the simple and understated. It’s part of the job description, like wearing holiday sweaters if you teach first grade and gaudy costume jewelry if your 6 year old gives it to you for your birthday.

  • Anonymous

Beautiful coat and she looks gorgeous in it. I’m not crazy about the hat but other than that she looks fabulous.

The Cambridges look swell. I’m feeling the ruffles.

    • Anonymous

With you on the ruffles (and wondering why I’ve never seen this particular species of uniform before … ).

Though I do prefer the extraordinary cut of the original McQueen, with belt, I wouldn’t mind Catherine’s version in my closet — and I certainly don’t mind it on her on this occasion.

  • Anonymous

That coat is a much better look than that sported by her mom-in-law one time (rest her clueless  soul), who dressed in some red and gold goofy-looking, faux military outfit one time that I thought inappropriate even back then, though I was only ten years old or so.

I think there are little pins on the inside of fascinators to keep them in place. But still, I often marvel at how they don’t just slide right out of her shiny, shiny hair.

I loved the original, but i get why she went for a bit more conservative style. She should have maybe kept the belt though i think.

I take the occasion of the McQueen coat to ask:  TLo, have you seen or do you intend to see the McQueen exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum in New York? I was there yesterday, and it was almost physically painful to see so much genius and beauty on display. Well worth your time, the next time you’re in New York. Love the coat, neutral on the hat, double-love the smiles. It sure looks natural to me.

Now TLo, about the ring. I don’t think she’s “over it” so much as she’s “used to it.” It’s a common phenomenon among newly engaged women to spend a ton of time looking at your ring/hand. It’s (usually) sparkly and pretty and new and you just can’t help  yourself. It can also take some time to get used to the feel of. And if that’s the case with the average 1/2 to 3/4 carat diamond, imagine what it must be like with that giant rock on your hand!

You are right, though, that she seems much more comfortable with it now.

Maybe that’s because of that  lovely Welsh gold wedding band ;-)

I do hate to point out but those are not ruffles on his coat.  Those are tabs meant to be buttoned on either side as you can clearly see the black toggles for the tabs.  Why they were left loose, I do not know.  Either way I do love her look, especially the shamrock pin she wore.

“she must be over the ring”  – she’s probably figured out that the setting catches her hair a lot..

I LOVE that you call her Cathy Cambridge! I’m shocked that you love her jacket though. The shortened sleeves look awkward. I’m over the hat, and can’t she wear her hair up once in a a while? I think it’s competing with the jacket.

I am in love with her coat! I love anything militant, and the lines, the double-breasted buttons, the epaulets, they’re all to die for! Very understated and chic at the same time.

Earlier in another post you said that a beautiful man makes a man look better than he really looks. Well, Prince Will has been looking better and better in every post you do about Kate. It might be the military outfit, because like you said, soldier boys never look bad, and it could be the hat (because sadly, we all know that his increasing baldness is a bit of a problem), but this is really the best I’ve seen Duke Cambridge look in a while!

I’d like to see her put her hair up for some of these events; I think that would also make the hat look better.

I imagine them getting dressed and she turns to him and says, “you’re wearing THAT”?
