Royal Watch: Bill & Cathy Get Swanky

Posted on June 10, 2011

Darlings, the Cambridges hit London in their finest to rub elbows with a bunch of gawkers. Let’s purse our lips, cock our heads, squint our eyes, and stroke our chins as we decide whether or not we approve of their outfits, mkay?

Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William, Duke of Cambridge at the ARK 10th Anniversary Gala Dinner in London, England.

Jenny Packham Spring 2011 Collection

Agatha Sandal by L.K. Bennett

It’s true what they say about a good-looking woman making the man she’s with look better. Seriously, didn’t everyone write William off as a disappointment in the looks area? Especially as he got older and the Saxe-Coburg genes seemed to kick in? Ever since they got engaged, his looks improved considerably.

Anyway, her dress is gorgeous and she looks stunning in it. Royalty isn’t the same as celebrity, however, which means her outfits are always a little boring in the way they’re styled; specifically, she goes for the all-one-color look a lot. We would have liked a more interesting purse or pair of shoes, though. Both are fine – the shoes are pretty fabulous, in fact – but some slight bit of color somewhere would have been welcome.

Still, they look every inch the glamorous, young, European couple. But Kate, you can stop dieting now. Seriously.

Yeah, seriously. She looks skinnier in that dress than the model. That’s not supposed to happen, ever.

    • Aly Light

      My thoughts exactly.

    • Anonymous

Look at her arms. They’re not at all skeletal. I think she just has a really, really tiny frame. Some cheese toast wouldn’t at all harm her, but I don’t think she’s reached the Callista Flockhart/Lara Flynn Boyle anorexia stage.

    • Anonymous

You took the words out of my mouth. That model looks positively chubby compared to Kate. Not good.

she looks thinner than the model

I think she looks gorgeous, but I’d love to see her with an up-do once or twice.  The long, flowing hair is starting to get a little old.

    • Anonymous

Agreed. I’d like to see her hack off a few—or several—inches.

+1 for calling the The Cambridges. Approve. Also agree with all you’ve said.

He is looking awfully thin ass well.  I like the clothes and her makeup.  But agree that she needs to stop. (she does not need to follow in Princess Di’s footsteps with food issues.)

I was afraid to draw the Diana comparison, but I’m glad you did, because that’s exactly where my thoughts went.

He’s still a big ole cheese with his smile, which really is kinda cute in the boyish sort of way. We don’t have to see ALL your teeth, William!

No, darlings. Not all of us wrote him off.

I personally think he’s is a fine looking young man–even without standing next to his lovely young bride. I think he got the best of his mother, with just enough of his father to take off the more feminine edge. I especially admire the fact that he didn’t run off to Royal Hair Club for men the minute his locks started falling. Strength of character is very attractive.

My thoughts exactly.  I like a balding man who does it chicly and gracefully.  Besides, as we have seen, he more than makes up for it with chest hair.  Delectable….

Ok, didn’t William have a widow’s peak before? Plugs?

    • http://twitter.com/masquedbunny Ри

I think his hair is receding from both front and back, and the widow’s peak has lost the battle.

      • Anonymous

Why doesn’t he just shave his hair off or go super short (like the vast majority of men in his situation)?  Would that breach royal protocol?

At least he doesn’t have the combover (yet).

is it just me or do they look like a happy and normal(ish) version of angelina and brad? also, i NEVER wrote off wills. i’ll take him off her hands ANY day :)

I hadn’t realized it, but, yes, William does look better ever since he and Catherine got engaged. Thanks for mentioning it. I immediately called my husband and told him to thank me because he looks so much better now (he used to have a horrid ZZ Top beard). Thanks, Tom and Lorenzo – I scored a lunch date!

There’s something off about Kate’s face – I noticed it at the wedding, as well.  Maybe it’s the makeup, or the work she’s had done to her teeth, or maybe it’s simply losing too many lbs., but she doesn’t seem as pretty as she used to.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_OSYAJATXUH3QX7ZDDF52GXG4PU Janie R

Her eyes seem puffy. Maybe she’s not getting enough sleep.

    • Anonymous

I agree – her face used to be a bit  fuller and glowing when she had some more pounds on her. She also wears black eyeliner underneath, too heavy, a la Sarah Jessica Parker. She really needs to let a make-up artist do her face, find one she is comfortable with. She has a heavy hand. But she is gorgeous, still, and they actually seem the antithesis of Brad and Angelina, the homewrecker to me. These two seem wholesome and real.

    • Lisa Duffy

She looks a little too hard in the face for someone her age, It’s partially her make-up and partially her weight loss. I think she’s starting to look about 35 rather than 29. If she puts on a few of pounds and gets a good make-up artist, as nancylee suggests, she’ll look radiant.

      • Anonymous

She’s starting to morph into Lady Elaine Fairchild…still young but headed there rather too quickly…is it her English blood that’s making her age so fast?  I hate to snark but some botox around those laugh lines maybe?

  • Anonymous

i just find them adorable. but ms cathy is looking way to tiny.

  • http://twitter.com/masquedbunny Ри

As I’m sure others hoped Will and Harry would favour Diana, I’m hoping any of Will and Kate’s offspring will favour her.

  • Anonymous

both looking lovely, and yes Wills is slightly cuter now (maybe it’s my penchant for unavailable men!). But,

I think that her waist is the size of one of my thighs. So, her dress could make a pretty leg warmer for me, if I ever needed warming one leg…

  • Patricia Biswanger

That dress is to die for, and she looks fabulous.  But agreed:  she needs to put on a few pounds.

  • Anonymous

Nice Prada clutch bag.  Happy looking, but yeah, much too thin.

  • http://twitter.com/VicksieDo Vickie Lord

She’s got that honking huge blue ring for her other color~~  ;-)

  • Anonymous

I love the dress and the shoes.  If I was rich and skinny, I would wear this all the time.

  • Anonymous

I think he looks better because he looks happier and more at ease.

And you’re right about the dieting. I hope they stopped off for some chips on the way home. (BTW, the dress is great and she, of course, looks fabulous in it, but that dress is definitely made for spotlights, not roomlight. It is not as alive as it is on the runway.)–GothamTomato

    Way too thin!

  • http://twitter.com/jericksondesign jessica erickson

Agree, she looks stunning. But can someone please get her a sandwich on the double? She must be nearly transparent in person.

  • http://twitter.com/_fallingslowly fallingslowly

What a beautiful, happy couple!  They look classy and really fantastic together. LOVE her shoes.

    • http://twitter.com/_fallingslowly fallingslowly

Oh geez, more weight wank.  For future reference, even 10 pounds heavier, Kate still has no hips. It’s just her body type, so harping won’t do any good. She has always been thin, but she has been about this weight for several years. It’s not new. She’s healthy, she reportedly eats a lot and exercises daily. She also doesn’t lack sleep. She has slightly sleepy eyes. So does her dad. In other words….she’s not perfect! Gasp! But she still looks beautiful and they both look happy, which is the most important thing.

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

No one’s saying that she should be curvy and voluptuous.  Merely that she looks like she’s lost more weight than she should.

  • Anonymous

She does look skinner than she should though, and this may be a trick of the camera, her arms are much less scary than they have been.  They don’t look like just bones anymore and I think that the way the dress is cut it can disguise the belly region somewhat.

    • Anonymous

agreed; her arms are looking more filled out and less Skeletor like. I think she looks a bit better. She’s always been narrow of hip

  • Anonymous

She’s got muscle, she’s got tits.  She’s just lean and small-boned, and she looks fine.

  • Anonymous

oh hai Celine Dion, you look great

  • Ozski

Gorgeous, ethereal, airy-fairy dress but I TOTALLY agree with the percentage of fawns here in that she is starting to look insectoid. I blame the Mom with her cottage cheese and prawn diet. The wedding is over, you can snack now, Kate! Also, I agree with nancylee61; she needs to lay off the raccoon eye-liner.

  • Robin Vuong

Any ideas of where I can get shoes like that? Preferably for cheaper too

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Vienna-Marriott/100001636120960 Vienna Marriott

Actually some people are just skinny.  Just because she isn’t fat doesn’t mean she isn’t healthy.

    • Ceur -

But she has obviously lost weight. When someone drops 20 pounds, you can’t use the ‘she’s naturally skinny’-argument.

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Vienna-Marriott/100001636120960 Vienna Marriott

Stress is a large factor in that.  As a thin and healthy person, when I am stressed out my metabolism works faster and I lose weight.  She’s fine.  Her sister is thin also.  It’s in the genes.  Please don’t champion the girl becoming a “standard” American size, she’s Euro and gorgeous.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RK5MAF2VNT32ULNYFIXDANTEC4 Terence

At first I noticed how thin she was, but then I also noticed that the first photo makes William look like a rail.  Could it have been the camera?

  • http://profiles.google.com/sntierney Shannon Tierney

Gentlemen (and commenters), can we stop harping on her for her weight?  There is no way we would tolerate so much snipping if she were overweight and people were discussing how unhealthy it made her. She is a thin, lean, small boned woman. She would continue to look lovely with another 5 lbs on her, but she is far from unhealthy looking (compare a picture of her to Leeann Rimes, who does look unhealthy).  She is going to turn in to someone obsessed with her weight if people can’t find another topic of discussion.

I think she is perfection in tht dress.

    • Anonymous

Agree completely. I am by no means a thin woman. I’ve been a 12-14 since I was a teenager. But I find this obsession with Kate’s weight irritating and insulting. And seriously, if I never read “someone give her a sandwich” again (about *any* woman), I’ll be happy.

In other news, she’s so friggin’ gorgeous in this dress that it makes me want to cry. It looks 10 times better on her than it does on the model.

  • Anonymous

I think she looks amazing.I love the shoes, although even just going with a silver shoe would have upped the ante a little bit. I’m becoming a fan of Jenny Packham evening gowns. I saw a few women wearing them at the Oscars this year and really liked them.

Regarding Kate’s figure: The style of dress really emphasizes the waist in a good way. I have a small waist and really slender upper body (don’t have Kate’s skinny skinny legs and hips, though), and when I wear anything remotely empire-esque with a looser skirt, my friends gasp and think I’ve dropped 10 pounds, when in fact the dress is doing a lot of the work. Yes, she is quite thin, but she doesn’t look unhealthily so to me.

P.S. I will always giggle when I see T Lo refer to the royal couple at Bill and Cathy Cambridge. It never gets old.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3JSTXMWWVZN2QNP2UEKJMTWD7U Isabel

Since I live in the hinterlands, not anywhere near NYC or London, have the Duchess and Pippa started a trend of women turning their blond locks into burnettes? Haven’t seen it yet in my neck of the woods, but just curious.

  • aussiegal77

Someone give the Duchess a hamburger.  Otherwise – lovely looks, both.

  • Anonymous

Why is it that it’s ok to comment about a girl’s skinniness, but it’s not ok to comment about a girl’s, um, abundance?  Seems like a big double-standard to me.

For the record, I think she looks fabulous, and more importantly, they both look happy.

    • Cydne Butler

As someone who was always accused of being too skinny, I agree with this statement.  If I walked up to someone and said you should go on a diet, I’d be rude, but when people told me I needed a sandwich, it was OK?  It is a double-standard and none of your business
I think they look fabulous and she is drop-dead gorgeous.  I will concur that as many times as TLo refers to “Bill & Cathy” I will laugh every.single.time.  Hysterical!

      • http://www.facebook.com/people/Vienna-Marriott/100001636120960 Vienna Marriott

I agree!  Just because we’re not fat doesn’t mean we’re not healthy.

      • MilaXX

I try to stay away from the great weight debates. I don’t think women with more meat on their bones are any more ‘real’ than my thinner counterparts. I would be lying though if I didn’t admit even I have noticed and commented on Kate’s weight. At first I thought it was the pre-wedding 20 many brides like to drop. I can also see the stress of being a new royal adding to her thinness. I hope whatever the reason is, she is healthy.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Because obesity takes longer to kill you than starvation.  Overall, being overweight is NOT as damaging to the body as an eating disorder — which I don’t think Kate has.

And there are plenty of people lined up to tell you how awful you look when you’re overweight and very few when you’re underweight.

  • MilaXX

She looks pretty here even if it is royal safe. I just hope she finds a way to inject a bit of color into her looks. The cream/beige/tan looks are getting boring.

  • Bridget Dierks

The dress is beautiful, but the lady needs to eat a cookie.  Actually, a lot of cookies would be better.

  • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I think she should weigh whatever she feels best at.  If this is it, good for her.

My guess, though, is she has “skinny stress”.  While for most brides, the wedding ends a lot of stress, that’s not true for Kate.  Her first 6 months to a year of being a royal are going to be just as stressful.  If she’s someone who doesn’t eat when she’s stressed, she’ll probably continue to be a bit under her normal weight.

I seriously doubt that her weight has anything to do with effort on her part.

  • http://profiles.google.com/caitlinsteinert Caitlin Steinert

I’ll trade her a few pounds of mine for that hair of hers. * sigh *

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UCLO5V2YD36T7QMPKOC7YXPOFU Erica

He looks better because he looks happy and relaxed.  Of course, I did so want him to avoid any of his father’s genes in the looks department, but alas, not to be :)  And she looks beautiful.  I don’t know.  She’s an awfully lean girl, of course, but I agree with another commenter that her arms look fine.  I think the arms are the tell for whether there’s a real problem, and hers look normal to me–not Angelina-like, but with both muscle and some fat on them.  Of course, she could gain some weight and still look great, but I’m not horrified looking at her or anything.

  • Anonymous

siiiiiiigh. Can we please stop talking about her weight? It’s completely irrelevant. You try being the brand new Duchess and have to put on a good face all the damn time and you tell me you don’t either gain or lose a lot of weight from stress.

That being said, I think she looks STUNNING. He still looks goofy.

  • http://twitter.com/aidanboleyn Aidan B

They are a truly beautiful couple. I do have womanly concern for her weight, though; I hope she’s all right.

  • Anonymous

I don’t think it’s that we wrote off William.  It’s that we (in America) tended to only see him via paparazzi.  And tended to fancy Harry more.

  • Anonymous

They both look gorgeous. As someone who spent her teens, 20s, and early 30s desperately trying to gain weight, I think she looks more like a naturally thin person than an eating disorder sufferer. I was constantly having to defend myself against charges of anorexia, and it gets old. She does need help with the make-up, though.

    • MilaXX

That would be fine if she hadn’t very obviously gone from a size 6 to what looks like a 2 prior to her wedding. Kate isn’t heavy at all but she has gotten noticeably thinner.

    • margaret meyers

Thank you.  She looks fine and healthy in all those sunbathing-on-a-boat photos.

  • Anonymous

The two of them look gorgeous. What a beautiful couple — and their best accessory is those big, obviously happy smiles. I loved the whole Jenny Packham Spring collection, and especially this lovely, fairies-in-the-gloaming dress.

  • Joyce VG

I’ve always thought Prince William was extremely handsome and for me he’s only getting better with age.  At the ARK fundraiser he got cat calls!  And you are right, having Duchess Catherine on his arm does make him even more handsome.  I think she is absolutely beautiful and charming.  I have a big ole crush on both of them.

  • http://twitter.com/delysia_lafosse Delysia LaFosse

I love the dress on her, but completely agree that she needs some color somewhere. There’s got to be some room in royal protocol for a pair of non-nude shoes or a clutch in a pretty color…

I saw video from this event on the news, and she looked even thinner in motion. I’d definitely like to see her put on a few pounds. I would also like to see her abandon her current eyeliner look, which is just way too heavy and makes her look even more drawn and tired.

    • MilaXX

I think the eye liner looks so prominent because a) She’s wearing so many neutral tones and b)She’s so thin. The combined effect makes it just leap out at you and seems out of place. I would like to see her softer the eyeliner, but add a bit more shadow or lip color.

  • Glen Coleson

She looks a lot like Sandra Bullock here.

  • Ella B. Mudge

My, what struck me in the photo just below the shoe is she has been working very hard to get the red carpet pose down cold — shoulders back, slight arch in the back, chin down, arms held just so, face composed into a serenely smiling mask.  She’s almost a bit too Hollywood for my taste, and since Will isn’t working it in the same way, it’s quite a contrast.  He’s actually much more like his mother, who could pose for photos and look very nice, but her personality still showed.  Di never seemed to be as mannequin-like as Kate.

  • Glen Coleson

I think most of the weight comments here are just residual effects from some of the earlier pictures in which you could see literally every bone in her arms. She looks much healthier here.

    • Elaine Lang

I agree, her arms in the first photo look like normal, healthy arms for a slender girl.  I think she has regained a few pounds and is looking healthy and happy now that the wedding stress is settling down.

  • Sara__B

The Cambridges are unbelievably gorgeous together. I especially enjoy that cameras continually capture them looking happy and relaxed — I hope it’s true! (I so want them to be happy together, but I worry…)

  • Anonymous

If the camera adds ten pounds, imagine what she looks like in person. Yikes. Eat a cheeseburger, honey.

  • Anonymous

    Beautiful. Classy. Happy. Now eat.

  • Anonymous

Until she wears something without a back (a la Rachel Zoe) and her ribs show (a la Rachel Zoe) I’m leaving comments on Cathy’s weight alone. She looks stunning here, though I kind of wished she’d used the long earrings that the model wore for a little pizzazz. And William does look wonderful. As long as the man keeps his trim figure, that handsome face and radiant smile and the way he wears a tux and top hat keep him in the ‘to die for’ category for me.

  • Emily Johnson

Also, girl needs to gain some weight, she looks like a light wind could blow her away.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Vienna-Marriott/100001636120960 Vienna Marriott

I disagree; I’d rather see someone look like her than be fat.

  • John Robison

It’s not the Sax-Coburg genes it’s the Montbaten (or, more exactly the Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg-Glücksburg part of the family) is where the receding hair lines comes from.

As for the rest, I heartily agree.

I read an article once that said the way she deals with stress is to run.  Maybe she’s super stressed and spending waaaaaaaaay too much time on a treadmill?

Kate lovvvves dresses that accentuate her already tiny waist. She is thin but everything she wears makes her look thinner. Furthermore everything is tailored to perfection.

Ditto on the dieting. I actually dislike the look because the cut of the dress makes her look so skeletal. She looks like one of those fashion magazine Photoshop disasters.

I think they look pretty great. Yes, she is thin, but it might just be stress, yes, we’d all like that kind of stress, but I can only imagine no matter how together she is, it has to be alot to adjust to. Plus if she gains, the tabloids will start with Kate getting fat, Kate pregnant headlines, she really can’t win.

  • Anonymous

I actually think she’s carrying off the thinness pretty well. And I wince a little when we criticize someone for being too thin. Think what happens if we say someone’s too fat. IMO, how one dresses, coifs and makes up the body is fair game for criticism, but the body itself should be off limits.

That said, Catherine, please ditch the raccoon eyeliner.

  • Anonymous

They both looks fantastic. Now, please eat a sandwich Kate.

    stunning, stunning dress.

Poor Cathy – literally every ounce of her will be under hawkish scrutiny and  waspish criticism til the day she dies. She can’t win for losing. She looks healthy and picked a great gown to wear for an evening fete. Not liking Bill’s laceups with his tuxedo-striped pants for some reason, but otherwise he looks dapper. They’ll probably always look impeccable and appropriate, with an occasional mildly surprising outfit or accessory but always nice to look at, and I won’t expect anything more from them.

BTW Brit kit(ten)s, is the Duchess a HRH? Us Yanks don’t know much about titles, and HRH is much faster to type than Duchess of Cambridge.

  • Sara__B

I don’t know about other parts of the US (and the world) but eyes completely ringed with eyeliner are the fashion with the under-30 crowd on my part of the left coast, and have been for quite a while. The teen who made my mocha this morning was wearing it as was the stylish 20-something who just came into my place of work. It’s a common sight on celebrity red carpets, too. I suspect Catherine will continue to draw circles around her eyes for quite a while.

  • Anonymous

    She’s got the cutest dimples!

  • Anonymous

That is one of the prettiest pastel dresses I’ve ever seen. Kate looks stunning head to toe. Wills is very handsome and adorable too. Together this is one of my favorite looks from them.

    I’m gushing, I know….

And, doesn’t that electric violet carpet have such a regal air about it?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3CGY36NG25QFIZQOLMH7SQTKLU andrew

Absolutely smashing.  Love the shoes with the little bows.  Adore the dress.  Mad for the dimples, the hair, the dainty earrings.  Only thing I would have added would have been some sort of bracelet.  He pairs well with her and doesn’t look as out-classed in the looks department as his dad always did with Diana.  (But obviously doesn’t with Camilla.)  They make an adorable pair.  Now if she would just start snacking from time to time and not continue to waste away, we’ll be fine.

    • margaret meyers

I don’t think she is a jewelry-wearing gal.  Even the crown she wore to be married was among the smallest available to her. Usually you see her with just her rings, a watch and earrings.  It does make her look simpler and more modern.

  • Grace Ritt

I didn’t know that Kate was in the first picture, because she was turned to the side. Seriously, I want to spread rumors about her getting lipo or something.
I love, love, LOVE that dress and the shoes are wonderful. I think she is going for muted looks so she doesn’t attract too much attention, but in the age of the internet, where she’s talked about every second anyway, I feel like she could afford to take some risks now and then.

  • Anonymous

    The both look fantastic!

I’ve always thought Will was a cutie…never wrote him off.  His smile looks a bit forced here…I like to see him when he relaxes more.

He could have offered her his arm ascending those stairs though.  ;)

I LOVE those shoes. Dammit another reason for me to be depressed that I am all cripple like! I want to wear shoes like that. The dress is great, I love the look on her youthful and chic all at that same time. Wills always looks good to me..don’t care always will.

Both look gorgeous.  Nothing to quibble about without being overly nit-picky.  If I never read “needs a sandwich” again, I’ll be super-happy.  It’s not OK to slam those who are over-thin anymore than it is to slam those who are the opposite.

She always looks very thin inher clothes, but when you see her swimsuit pictures she looks fit and healthy.

I never wrote Wills off either :-D  I love that he looks so happy, they both do.  Young love, sigh.   Kate’s dress is gorgeous, shimmery and princessy without the pouf, just perfect.  And the shoes are to die for.  And yes, can we lay off the weight comments please.

He seems to favor double-breasted suits a lot. I would like to see him in a more modern line.

You gotta admit this is one of her best looks…

Celebrities are allowed to piss people off, but royalty can’t.

    That dress is fabulous.

Brother knows how to carry a suit.

She still looks way too thin, but gawd, that dress is gorgeous!  Other than being too thin, she looks wonderful!

Kate actually looks thinner than the runway model. This is not a good thing.

If she hasn’t had as much time to workout lately, that could be causing the apparent weight-loss as well.  Those of us who don’t build and maintain muscle easily find that when we are very toned and quit working out, we lose all the muscle.  If that muscle was the only thing filling her out and it’s gone down because of lack of workout time, she’ll look thinner.

    Gorgeous! They look fantastic.

Cate doesn’t look unhealthy, let’s not all take this too far the other way and give her grief for being thin. Body complexes stem from both directions.

Why the turnaround on the body comments? A few months back posts were, rightly, being deleted for weight comments but now it seems to be sanctioned. Can we please return to the clothes only policy because frankly all the eat a burger remarks are getting tedious.

She’s too skinny, but the dress is fab.

Him: I have always found him adorable and the hair loss issue never changed that for me.
Her: I love that dress, but hate the matchy shoes. I’m going to have to retract my comment the other day about her looking as if she had put on a few lbs. Perhaps it was just the outfit or perhaps she was just bloated that day. It happens. These pictures…I’m kind of speechless. She looks positively skeletal and her very beautiful face is starting to take on that harsh angular look that women get when they’re too thin (see Maria Shriver and Brooke Shields sometimes). I won’t make the obnoxious sandwich/cheeseburger comment, but I’m sincerely concerned for her health.
