Prabal Gurung Resort 2012 Collection

Posted on June 17, 2011

Put on some polka dots and dance in your Cha Cha heels, darlings!

Prabal Gurung, who recently won the Swarovski Award for Womenswear at the CFDA Awards, is another designer who seems to have shaken off the apparent shackles of the fall and spring seasons, taken off his shoes, and wiggled his toes in the grass for this, his first resort collection. It’s a fun sampling of bright, whimsical looks. We love the prints, the dégradé effects, and the shorts with jackets; and of course, the shoes are to die. Great proportions, great separates, great looks for day or night;  it’s a young, hip and very stylish collection that you can easily dress up or down. It’s very hard to do sophisticated and young but he’s managed to do just that trick here.

I like it. It’s bright and colorful and makes me smile looking at it. Minor quibble; I will never cosign on capri pants. They are evil. The black and white pants outfit with the coral belt had Chloe, er um….I mean Sage written all over it.

      LOVE!

    • Kit Taylor

      I LOVE that last dress!

      • All For You Sophia

Me too! It’s just amazing, innit?

I have to wonder when the designers will start to show stuff for us old foggies.  I am just at the beginning of the baby boomers, and soon there will be millions of us. So where are the clothes for us…things that aren’t MUMU’s? or house dresses?
But I love this collection, and would be wonderful if I was 40 yrs younger.

Makes me wish I was young, tall and thin.

    • Anonymous

I don’t think it is totally for the young, I could see Cate rocking that very first dress, love that one!

The blonde is clearly anorexic, and the brunette isn’t far from it.  I wonder if these would look okay on a size 4 girl, much less a normal woman…

      • http://twitter.com/DresswithAplomb Aplomb Pomilio

I know. I could barely notice the fashions for looking at their ridiculously skinny legs.

        • http://twitter.com/thelilerin erin l.

i was going to say the exact same thing. i have nothing to say about this collection besides i’m tired of seeing ridiculously skinny girls.

          • Kristen Taylor

So true.  You know there’s a problem when the knee is the widest part of the leg.

          • http://www.deathbywhippedcream.com/ Addis R. Pérez

@twitter-35269618:disqus  and @twitter-22857320:disqus : Me, three! That gap in between the blonde’s legs is just too distracting!

      • Anonymous

Agreed. Also, the blonde’s posing is awful–she actually seems to be trying to imitate a hanger.

I wear polka dots and cha-cha heels when I’m riding my bike. So yeah, I like.Especially the first and last looks.

Do you think her thighs are REALLY the same size of her calves, or is that shopped?  No matter how much i diet i can’t get my thighs to not touch….

      • http://twitter.com/wrenaria Kimmy Hescock

That blonde girl is scary skinny – but it is possible for thighs to not touch without being anorexic because mine don’t. I think genes have something to do with that though.

        • Anonymous

I was very skinny like that in high school–not anorexic, just growing up faster than out. My thighs definitely didn’t touch. No problem there now though unfortunately.

        • Anonymous

I was very skinny in high school, and fairly thin now (my thighs don’t touch), but I don’t think that blonde is naturally like that.  The brunette is thin, but she doesn’t look sickly.  That blonde looks too thin

      • Anonymous

I think my thighs didn’t touch when I was 18 and barely weighed 100# (not anorexic, just really naturally thin); but oh lord has that ship ever sailed. !LOL! This baby boomer can no longer recall… ;(

What’s up with all the arms akimbo?  Just because one HAS pockets, does not not mean one’s hands should be stuffed as deeply as possible into them.  It makes them look even more sunken in. Super distracting to the point where the clothes are almost an after thought.

Totally agree, plus it stretches out the crotch in a very unappealing way.

      LOVE the shoes!!!!!

    • Anonymous

eh, not loving this at all.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

      Cute dresses.

    • Anonymous

Hey these are fun. I even see one or two I could wear, which about never happens in FashionLand. Also — the pants don’t seem like capris to me. They look just slightly highwater. Capris are much higher up the leg, I thought.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=637520850 Madison Chua

For a resort collection, there sure is a lot of black. While some of the prints are pretty, I think this is just a very boring collection.

    • sonictofu

This is a cute collection, but the styling and the model choices give it a juniors vibe.

    • Anonymous

Love it! Bright colors, fun prints. MilaXX has it right…kill the capris! They are evil and must die. But all in all this is really fun and I’m liking it.

And if I were 7 feet tall and skinny and young I’d wear the hell out of those shoes even if my feet never forgave me.

    • http://twitter.com/merrigator merrigator

I personally couldn’t wear most of these looks, but I really love them.  They’re fun but still polished looking, and those shoes are gorgeous!

    • Anonymous

Too distracted by the models’ skinniness to think about the clothes.

      • Glen Coleson

That blonde model definitely does not wear the clothes well. I understand that fashion is designed for the unrealistically petite. But when your so skinny that Prada hangs off of your frame theres something wrong.

      • Kate Small

Me too, I had a hard time looking away from the poor little blonde’s dreadfully bony legs for long enough to notice the clothes.  She looks like she’s about to collapse.

      • Karen Philp

Completely agree. I was just looking at her legs through all the photos and then realized I had even checked out the clothes!

I want those shoes so badly it’s sort of insane.

Love all the clothes as well.

    • Anonymous

Yeah boy, if I could have I would have mixed and matched several of these pieces in my early 20s — and I definitely would have used the looks as inspiration for what I could afford then.

    • Anonymous

Hard to get excited about something that only Elle Fanning can wear. Except for those shoes.

    • Anonymous

      it’s a adorable.  wish i was young & sophisticated. :)

The dégradé effect is nice in theory, but the placement of the transitions will not flatter many women, and the middle dress on the second row is especially problematic.  Putting the lightest color in the middle?  Extremely few women will fail to look pregnant in those two dresses.

The rose print reminds me of the mid-1980s, and it’s not a good memory.

However, for the most part I like the color story and the shapes of the pieces.  I just wish they hadn’t been hung on a model who looks like a stick insect (tm Adrian Mole).

    • Anonymous

Surprise Surprise!  Another look book with women shined up and posed to look like insect robots and/or corpses.  I know you are tired of me saying it – but really, fashion industry?  Really?  I’m sure the clothes are nice and all – but get real and give us some women who look like they might actually be ALIVE to wear (and purchase) said designs.  Oh, and I want the cute little black and yellow A-line dress.  See?  We can be critical, fabulous feminists and still love the fashion!

Bright. Fun. Pretty. I like them! The clothes, not the shoes. Why are all those girls so sad, though? Maybe it’s the shoes.

    • margaret meyers

As a mother, I am suggesting the blonde model drink vitamin D fortified milk and spend some time in the sun.  She’s got Rickets and treatment will make her look better and feel better.
The clothes are cute ina Betsy Johnson/Pinball Wizard kinda way.

That’s the stuff Elle Fanning should wear!

      Love the shoes.

The blonde model has a wide stance. I can see Carey Mulligan in all these looks.

I want every single one of these pieces in my closet right now! Love the prints, colors, and shapes!

I don’t like all the looks, but 3/4 is a good number and fresh is an excellent way to describe it, so big thumbs up. Also, yey! Pockets! Pretty stilettos that look like you can do more than just stand-still-or-sit-down or die! I think I could actually dance on those, and maybe even run a bit when I end up late because I’m getting dressed. I’m sold.

That last gwn is really fun, I’d love to see one of the teenage starlets rocking it for a red carpet.

This collection is one of few that I would buy many pieces from.

    • Anonymous

Oof.  The whole collection seems a bit weird and off.  Visually interesting for sure but just off.

    • Amanda in Austin

Can someone explain to me why designers want the models to do that shoulder-hunched-over look? (like the girl in the red and black sparkly dress?)  I truly do not understand it. There must be some reason, but I just don’t know what it could be.
