In or Out: Florence Welch in Anna Sui

Posted on June 23, 2011

Flo steps out in a series of mistakes on the accessorizing front:

Florence Welch attends The Nylon and Habitual Private Dinner to celebrate Nylon’s Music Issue in New York City.

Anna Sui Fall 2011 Collection/Model: Jac

Well, it’s a look, that’s for sure. The question is, is it her look?  One the one hand, we’re happy to see her get away from her sheer hippy dippy flower child couture dresses; on the other hand, moving on to Marcia Brady on acid wearing Bob Dylan’s hat was not the style progression we had pictured for her. The dress is super-cute, though. We think it works for her and we think it makes a nice contrast to her previous tendency for wifty, ethereal dresses. The ankle strap shoes are okay, but just okay. The purse doesn’t go with anything else on her body and the hat … the hat, kittens.  Keep the dress, switch out everything else she’s wearing with more appropriate alternatives, and this could have been cute.

VOTE NOW!

IN! I LOVE that episode when Marcia Brady drops acid!

OUT! Get back in the Mystery Machine, Velma!

Voting is still open on Cate Blanchett’s “Baby steps back to fabulous” ensemble. Get thee to the comments section and opinionate.

The dress is fun although not all that flattering. Definitely something I would have worn in the early 80s though. The shoes are WAY  better than the runway kneesocks and oxfords. Everything else seems random, including the hat and purse.

Dump the accessories and at least it’s better than that sheer….thing…she wore on Colbert the other night.  Still, OUT.

Oh f*** everyone else who’s going to hate it, I like the hat with the dress.  IN IN IN

What can I say, my taste was imprinted upon me in the sixties and early seventies. (Don’t get me started on how unfair it was that just when I got old enough & confident enough to aggressively pursue men, they all started to cut off the long hair I’d been trained since my earliest youth to find sexy.)

The purse, on the other hand, is an abomination and does not go and furthermore, no one under 60 should carry it. But I won’t let it ruin the rest for me.

      • oohsparkley!

I can so relate to this!  And I agree, I like it. IN!  I still like long and longish hair on guys.  There is still a little hippie in me.  You would probably never guess to look at me.

      • Anonymous

I also like the hat. Actually, I love the hat. Furthermore, I’m hating the bag. Despite that, she gets an IN.

I love long hair on men. When I first laid eyes on my husband, his hair was below his shoulders. And thick and shiny. It was the first thing I noticed about him. I was smitten even before I spoke a word to him.

I was thisclose to voting her in… but I hate that hat so much I’m going to have to say she’s OUT.

I think she’s pulling this off!  I think she often looks too droopy/sloppy but here she looks fun.  Agree about the hat (and with whoever commented that she’s working that purse so she can keep it).

Love it. Want all of, every last bit of it. Even the hat. I am, admittedly, a Grateful Dead tatted, free lovin’ second generation flower child, so, yes, biased. Going out to recreate the look…only, out of a thrift store. Guess that’s kind of a backhanded compliment, but, I still love her and this look.

    • Anonymous

The hat is so awful – I hate to give an outfit an OUT due to one extremely poor accessory but it just ruins the whole look, so, out it is.

    • http://verenahafner.wordpress.com/ Verena

      OUT! She looks sloppy.

    • Sarah Cassinelli

OUT!  I love the dress, as well,  but I refuse to condone her bad choices in accessories.  Everyone knows they are the gateway to bigger and worse clothing choices.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=717883898 Glynis Fediuk

Some variation in her necklines would be nice—not that the fun bags need to be out in full force, but I’d love to see her in a top that isn’t buttoned up to the chin.

Out—not super out, but still out.

    • bookish

“Keep the dress, switch out everything else she’s wearing with more appropriate alternatives, and this could have been cute.”

I completely agree. She looks cute in the dress, but the hat especially is just bad and silly. OUT

IN!  The dress is adorable, and she needs the hat to give it that bit of “out there” that we are used to from her.  The Chanel-look purse is playing on the primness of the print, and I love the shoes.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UZQHKSHMILAPKLYZEVXNJYYA34 SheriB

First, I think it looks better on the 12-year old model. Second, it makes me think of Russian Riverdance.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

IN — it’s not the best she’s ever looked, but I can go with it.  The bag sucks, but the hat… well, the hat I deem acceptable because she’s a musician.  She’s allowed to be a little bit weird.

    • Anonymous

      OUT. The hat is unforgivable.

    • Anonymous

I love hats; don’t like that one.  The bag is only for the retirement village crowd.  Her hair is stringy and the bangs have got to go.  Still, I don’t know…….there’s something about the dress that suits her, and I actually like the shoes with the dress.  She’s not exactly a conventional fashion person, so all in all, I have to say: IN.  (But only for her.)

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nicole-Walraven/527225623 Nicole Walraven

In. That’s a really cute dress. Also, its possible that she did drop acid when she got dressed, and I support the mixing of psychedelics and fashion.

Out. I don’t care for any of it at all. Only a tween should be wearing that dress if anyone.

    • MilaXX

Sorry, OUT. The dress is quite the attention grabber so you really need to dress lightly with accessories. She needs to lose the hat & the bag. The shoes are passable, but a simple pump would be better.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QCJEZMOV4VYMXC5WJALLZNYEB4 Mari Rose

I actually like the hat with the dress, but not the shoes. The ankle straps veer the dress into twee territory. I think it would look better with boots. And w/o the purse.

It gets an IN from me, but just barely.

    • Lies L.

I’m giving her an IN because my love for that dress trumps some of the other questionable choices.

I’m going to say IN, because she needs all the encouragement she can get. I saw her on Colbert, and she was just so shy and sweet I had an immediate girl-crush. The dress is very cute on her. I will just ignore the hat & the bag. Baby steps!

(We just had an Anna Sui eyewear trunk show in our office, and the colors of the eyeglass frames were so wonderful, I had to order a pair immediately.)

Am I the only person in the universe that doesn’t really like her music/aesthetic? It all feels very affected to me.

    • Anonymous

Ug – so tough!  That dress is darling and I even like it with the shoes. The bag I could forgive, but that hat is just so wrong (and the hair under it looks wrong too). Can the neck up really make or break an outfit? Since the whole effect is basically ruined by that hat, I’m gonna go with yes. OUT.

i love anna sui, but this is very velma.
& it doesnt work on florence welch–it just doesnt mix w/ any bit of her: not her skin, not her hair, not her height. just: no.

i would say combine the accessories w/ a different dress & not the other way ’round.
&, so help me, i’ve worn it a bazillion times but, in this case–lose the hat.

    • Anonymous

I like it.  IN  I think it’s very Florence…quirky with old world reference.

The black hat, purse and shoes are a rest for the eyes, with all the patten on the dress…which is the focal point/statement.  Perhaps the purse could/should be switched out for a smaller and more modern bag…but the overall intent works imo.

Out.  The dress is cute on the runway model, but Flo’s accessorizing has ruined it.

    • Anonymous

The only thing I really hate is the purse. I am eh on the hat. The shoes are ok. The dress I love, love, love. I know you should take a runway look and make it your own but I wish she had carried a bag similar to the runway look. I adore the socks and shoes on the model but can anyone over the 21 get away with wearing knee socks?

In. I don’t like the shoes and the bag is ridiculous with this outfit (though I am not opposed to old school Chanel-ish quilted with a chain bags), but I think the hat is a fun addition, though i think it would work better if the brim was a little broader and floppier. Still, she’s is making it work.

    • Anonymous

The dress is fine – it neither thrills nor offends me. But I agree with the poster who is tired of seeing her buttoned up to the neck all the time. FW said in an interview it was her thing, but it limits her look and thus puts her in danger of soon being among the fashion forgotten. After all, we don’t want to be BORED, do we? And I truly don’t understand the accessory choices. She seems to want to be known for edgy and unconventional style choices, but frankly you could probably find a similar outfit on a 60+ year-old Asian woman at a dressy event (relax, fellow kittens, I’m Asian and speak from a lifetime of experience, not disrespectful snarkiness). Careful, Ms. Welch. As Frau Seal says, “in fashion, one day you’re In and the next day you’re OUT.”

If she had bothered to dress her hair (which she never seems to do), the hat would have looked pretty good with that dress.  The purse and the boring shoes are the really dreadful parts of the ensemble.

Cra-cra hot mess!!!  Hideous dress unless maybe you’re under 23 doing the girly thing like the runway look.  Hair looks a fright, the shoes aren’t rock-n-roll enough, the hat is just trying too hard, and ……………the whole thing is just a train wreck!  Ew, I’m getting a weird F-ed up Courtney Love vibe now!
