In or Out: Cate Blanchett in Romance Was Born

Posted on June 23, 2011

We’ll say upfront that this isn’t going to be one of those Cate Blanchett looks that will cause you to involuntarily gasp and shout “BRAVA!” at your desk. But her last RC appearance here on the blog shook the very foundations of civilization and caused millions of people to question both the existence of God and their own place in the universe. Really. It was that bad.

But this one’s not that bad and “not that bad” is, sadly, a step in the right direction for Cate, who caused the deaths of thousands by wearing such a crappy outfit in public last time.

Cate Blanchett attends the performance of the Sydney Theatre Company’s “Edward Gant’s
Amazing Feats of Loneliness” in Sydney, Australia in Romance Was Born.

Romance Was Born Spring 2011 Collection

Okay, yes. The pants. They’re not really fabulous. But everything north of the waist is sublime. Love the jacket, blouse and necklace. The whole look is perfect for the event; just stylish and eye-catching enough without being too attention-seeking or over the top. Yes, there’s the pants, and there are what appear to be maribou feathers on the shoes and that seems like a really bizarre choice for this funky, urban chic style of look.

Oh, kittens. What has happened? We find ourselves struggling to say nice things about Cate Blanchett’s outfit! Woe to humanity.

VOTE NOW!

IN! Oh, get over it, T Lo! She looks FINE!

OUT! It is the End Times! Blanchett looks like shit!

The Minion Opinion on the last two “In or Out” posts shook out as follows:

Kate Winslet’s Vicki Posh impersonation didn’t fly with the bitter kittens and she got an OUT.

Cammie Diaz’s Rube Goldberg dress was similarly underwhelming to the commentariat and also got an OUT.

It’s the fashionpocolyspe! I can’t take it! The only thing I don’t hate is the necklace. I can’t deal with this much fug on Cate! I can’t… I’m getting the vapors.

    • Anonymous

I know I said half in and half out, but I kind of agree with you.  As TLo say, “not bad” for this goddess is really, really horrifying.  We need to see some SWINTON and make sure that she’s not another horsewoman of the apocalypse.

  • Anonymous

IN…. was this a RC moment? I still think she redeemed herself with this one. LOVE the necklace.

In. She’s slowly making her way back to shore…

  • http://twitter.com/asciident Melissa Della

Is she having an off-season?! I love her the waist-up…I’m not sure what’s going on waist-down! IN with some reservations…

I actually adore that necklace with the top. And the hair. My goodness. Bring me that hair. In.

    • Anonymous

Ooops I “Liked: when I wanted to “Reply”     ‘

‘”Bring me that hair”  – yes please do, because I think it looks awful on her.

      • Anonymous

oh no, ASK26, her hair is one of the most great things about her!

  • Anonymous

Are you sure Cameron Diaz’s dress was by Rube Goldberg? I would have sworn it was by Gordon Gartrelle.

As for Cate’s outfit: To me, the only thing that keeps if from being great are the shoes. If she had worn boots (even ankle boots) those pants would have looked completely different – dare I say, fabulous.

Ah, yes, Gordon Gartrelle. Shiny yellow satin shirts are so hip.

    In. I’m digging the necklace.

Hesitant IN. Not a fan of cityscape shirts nor Maribou feathers on anything but sexy slippers. Overall she looks good though.

  • Anonymous

Sorry – regardless of who you are, but especially in her case – NOT THAT BAD – is not an IN.

ugh  – (Thank goodness she did not wear the pants that the model had on)

  • Anonymous

Oh My god.  Does this mean that even Cate Blanchett has feet of maribou bedecked clay after all?  I cannot breathe I’m so disheartened. Sorry my Cate, but those pants look like black lycra biker leggings gone bad.  Paired with a fuller legged trouser this would have been a slam dunk. I would even have forgiven you those SHOES.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QCJEZMOV4VYMXC5WJALLZNYEB4 Mari Rose

In, just for carrying off that necklace. Very few women could do that.

  • Anonymous

I’m not sure – I think I don’t like the jacket with the blouse.  The necklace with the blouse, on the other hand, is brilliant.

    • Anonymous

I’m with you 100%.  I don’t dislike the idea of a jacket with the blouse, but that particular jacket is the exact same length as the blouse.  Together like that, they cut her right in half.

  • Anonymous

She’s looking better all the time.

  • http://twitter.com/80nine CAMERON

Two bad outfits do not signify the end for Queen Cate! Though she better wear something fierce for her next red carpet appearance

(But this is still an OUT)

  • Ann Strunk

IN! She looks cute and I applaud anyone who wears pants on the RC.

  • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

You know, it looks like she may have gained a tiny bit of weight.  I wonder if that may be what’s behind the problematic outfits lately — not because it’s hard for her to find anything but because of altered perceptions on her part.  If she saw a gain she might have started to dress to hide it (even though no one else would ever have noticed).

  • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

Sadly, out. That jacket is either too small or likely just too tailored for the top and necklace.  Whatever visual impact either was supposed to have is stunted because they’re framed by all that black. And they’re already competing for all that attention instead of working together.  And the sleeves are too long.

It’s like she read all the comments about how the last time people laughed and said she looked like she was going on an interview in the suit she bought at Syms in 1992 and decided she was going to show up by wearing a tailored suit…with the entirely wrong top and jewelry.  More isn’t exactly better.

  • Anonymous

Are you sure she’s not pregnant? She’s been wearing a few waist obliterating clothes lately.

  • Aly Light

I love that jacket– the sharp shoulders are perfect. The necklace is a lot of fun. I think the issue is actually the length of the shirt, or possibly the fact that it’s untucked like that, since it leaves an extra line right under the jacket line. It makes the look just a tad too sloppy and– well, young for Cate. But I still call this outfit IN, despite the fact that it’s admittedly an outfit that a mere mortal like me could wear to work, rather than something only a goddess could pull off on a red carpet.

  • Anonymous

It’s not the trousers.  It’s the shirt.  It looks like it might be gathered, or that might be the print, but it’s hitting her in the wrong place, thus making the trousers look crappy.  That much pattern that high on the neckline is also pulling attention from the fabulous jewelry.  A simpler, slightly lower-necklined shirt, with that necklace and blazer?  Rock!  This is too much pattern in the wrong place.

  • Anonymous

She’s in. But oh she can do so much better!

  • http://pleasewelcomeyourjudges.com/ Brian @ PWYJudges

Cate gets an IN from me. I think she looks quite chic.

Waist up is an IN, Waist down is an Out.  Waist wins because of the Necklace is fantastic.  IN

  • taodon

Taking a garish piece from the runway and turning it into something that could easily be seen on any 40 something in suburbia is actually quite an accomplishment.  Pairing it with the “My Kid made this in Metal Shop” necklace is something I wouldn’t normally consider workable, but it seems to function adequately… a bored IN from me.

  • aimee_parrott

    Woe betide us!  Doooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooom.

Ok, I like the necklace.  The jacket is fine, I guess.  Ditto the shirt.  But the pants?  The feathered shoes???  Overall, I cannot help but give this another OUT.  Save us, Tilda Swinton, you’re the only one who can!

  • Anonymous

The outfit is hideous on the model! The top and bottom together are just awful. Cate made it a million times better by just opting for the top. I love it – I think it’s smart and sassy. Love her hair. Oh Cate, all is forgiven! In!

  • Anonymous

Maybe she’s just bored of being so fabulous all the time. I can imagine it must get quite tiresome. I have faith that it will be ok and our Cate will show up at some red carpet event soon looking her usual jaw-droppingly fabulous self. You don’t just go from being Cate Blanchett to Office Manager on Casual Friday and stay there forever. She knows we’re out here and she wouldn’t do that to us.

  • Anonymous

    IN

The top with the bold architectural skyscraper nighttime graphic is very cool, and the necklace goes perfect with it.  Love her hair here too.

I’m not disliking the pants and shoes like so many here are…they’re just kind of average/neutral/ordinary.  I think it’s just that we expect head to toe perfection from her…and this is only half perfect/half average.  Still…she looks great!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lauren-Jean-St-Martin/504251897 Lauren Jean St. Martin

In! She looks good, and the pants, while not earth shattering, aren’t bad.

In. I think it looks pretty chic.

  • aussiegal77

In.  My poor heart can’t take any of this stress!  I’m not even going to look at the pants closely.  She looks way better than last time!  That is all.  IN.

  • Joyce VG

IN.  She looks dressy casual and lovely.

  • Anonymous

In. I think she looks great. Love the shirt, jacket, necklace, hair, and makeup. The pants are kind of a backdrop to let the rest stand out. I am biased, though, b/c this is kind of my aesthetic.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_64HSRZWCSJ5RBFGCWDLFQOICYM G

Thank goodness she didn’t wear the pants.  On the model it is a HORRIFIC look.  She looks improved, but nowhere near her stellar previous  appearances.  OUT.

  • Vaniljekjeks

Nothing she is wearing is particularly fantastic, but she still makes it an IN.  She looks beautiful.

  • http://profiles.google.com/ellenbehm Ellen Behm

Except for the necklace, this ensemble just doesn’t work for me. Out.

  • http://twitter.com/wrenaria Kimmy Hescock

In. Love the necklace and top. Needs better shoes.

  • Andrea Galyean

I don’t see sublime in any of this, except maybe the necklace. She looks like a well-accessorized usher. Out.

  • Anonymous

Every time I look at Cate, all I can think is that I wish I could pull off that haircut.

The rest of the outfit is just ‘meh’. Which I guess makes it an out.

  • http://summerborn.livejournal.com/ Summer Born

IN – waist up is as you say “sublime” and aren’t we grading on a curve here?

  • MilaXX

IN the pants are rather ordinary but I like the top and love the necklace, hair & makeup. Also bonus points for looking at what the model wore &  even attempting an outfit from that.

  • Anonymous

IN. She looks great. I like the pants – it’s only the shoes that look off to me. Still, from the ankles up, very nice!

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.parker Sara Parker

No way, Cate is totally IN.  A little fluff on the shoes does not demote her into In-or-Out territory– you guys are just confused after she rocked our worlds by showing up in that hiddy pantsuit.  I am reassured by this outfit that said pantsuit was just a momentary blip, and all is again right with the world.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Nestor.Chocolato NesTtor Chocolato

hate it OUT those pants OUT OUT

  • Anonymous

    Definitely IN.

  • Anonymous

Total In. I think she looks sharp, if not exactly RC-standout. This on anyone else wouldn’t even be a question.

  • http://profiles.google.com/phyllis.craine Phyllis Craine

Did she fire her gays maybe?

  • Judy_J

I like everything north of the equator, so since there are more elements in that hemisphere, I give her an IN.

  • Judy_J

I like everything north of the equator, so since there are more elements in that hemisphere, I give her an IN.

  • http://twitter.com/thelilerin erin l.

the pants are fine enough, the shoes bother me to no end, but that necklace more than makes up for the distaster last week. IN.

  • Beth G

Out… because.. how badly do you have to mess up to make Cate Blanchett look “hippy” (as in big hips) which so so obviously does not have….

  • Anonymous

She’s kind of like a mullett…half and half.

  • Anonymous

I am relieved that she looks better here.  Her hair and makeup are just so great and so Cate that it is truly paining me to have to piece together the remaining mishmosh.  It just doesn’t bear close inspection.  This would be an ‘in’ on many many other tasteless gyno-showing females, but I can’t do it for Cate because she is so much better than this.

I have to give her an OUT.  But I’m crying as I do it.

  • Anonymous

    I give it an IN.

  • Lies L.

IN. Weird shoes, but the pants are tolerable and everything up from there looks fabulous!

  • Anonymous

The pants are ordinary but work with the jacket and top. I am not sure there were other options for the pants. I like the necklace. So In. It is not gasping for breath and screaming IN, but an in Someone else mentioned this … it looks like something a suburban mom would wear. I resemble that statement and it does like outfit I would wear going out to dinner. I sort of expect more from Cate.

  • http://twitter.com/Space_Kitty Space_Kitty

Better than the last pantsuit, but she should have stuck with the runway version. This one cuts her in half.

  • Anonymous

IN. I like the necklace that much. And, given that as you note, north of the hip waist is marvelous, and I find the pants pedestrian but not awful, balances out to an IN. Really, though, it’s on the back of that necklace.

In other news, I am distraught that La Winslet was deemed out. Don’t listen to them Kate!

  • Anonymous

OUT. The pants totally ruin the look. Makes her look like she haz ginourmous hips.
I think she overreacted to the commentary on the last pants. Went too far the other way.
Happy medium Cate. That’s all we’re asking.

    Want that necklace, though.

    • Anonymous

Pretty much that, re: the pants.  And the shirt hits her in exactly the wrong spot, compounding the error of the pants.  From the waist up, though, she looks great, but from there down… OUT.

  • Anonymous

Out. But I’m not despairing over any of her not-so-great choices. They haven’t been catastrophic. Even the best players have their minor slumps.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

Nothing wrong with it, per se. It’s just boring. Stars who are beautiful, thin and rich, who have access to the greatest clothes in the world, should never be boring. So OUT.

  • Anonymous

It is the End Times! Blanchett looks JUST FINE!

  • Anonymous

I do agree that the top half is great and the pants are…not offensive. So IN, I guess.

  • Anonymous

Cate, why are you doing this to us!? All we’ve ever wanted was to love you!

  • Anonymous

    IN

  • Anonymous

She is so fierce from the waist up that I’m having a hard time accepting the lower half. But fuggit, OUT.

  • Anonymous

At least she didn’t wear the runway look. Imagine that! I love the hair and make up and the necklace and the blouse/tunic. Hate the pointy shoulders of the jacket and the pants are just boring. On the whole, she just tipped the meter to the IN side. But not by much.

  • Anonymous

Well, I doubt this outfit caused the demise of millions but it still sucks. Not a fan of the blouse at all, but I am digging that necklace.
Overall, I’m not on board with this look at all. OUT.

  • Anonymous

The length of the T-shirt combined with the jacket make her look hippy. The pants make her legs look stumpy. The necklace and her face are the only good things about this. So blah it hardly deserves attention. I never thought I’d be saying such things about Cate Blanchett. OUT.

  • Anonymous

If she’s half IN and half OUT, can I just call her ajar?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1474713106 Katy Morris McDermott

I have to go with “out” on this one – but Cate, I still want to be you when I grow up! (Or just have your hair. Whichever.)

  • Anonymous

    IN.

  • Anonymous

I like it.  Much better with plain black pants than with the matchy printed ones the model is wearing!  And the necklace is killah.  So what if she looks like a suburban mom?  There are a lot worse things to look like.  And, in a lot of ways, she *IS* a suburban mom….just a famous Australian one, with an Oscar on the fireplace mantel.  I say IN.

  • Anonymous

I don’t get the big deal over the pants. I think she looks fresh and urban chic. Love that top and so glad she didn’t wear the horrendous pant or jacket adorned by the model.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_FNFWER3VPXZGG4B6QCJVIPYEDM AntonijaM

I want that shirt.  I really do.  Oh yeah–it looks good on Kate, too.  She looks fine.

Thank God she didn’t wear the original pants. Restores my faith in Cate. In.

IN.  Gimme that necklace right now!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_F73LIJ3SJGI5AJQMXMWXCKILHI Pamela

I can’t hate on Cate no matter what she wears and she’s attending a play here ferchrissakes, not an awards show!  She’d be fabulous in sackcloth and ashes and I hope to look like her in my next life.

  • Anonymous

Clearly, what happened was that she accidentally left the pants she was really going to wear at home. Nothing else could explain this.

IN.    something funky with the shoes, and a little dumpty – humpty at the waist.  But hair, shirt, and necklace are hot.   final verdict? IN.

  • Grace Ritt

I agree, everything on top looks great–but the pants look like something a woman in her twenties would pair with the top because she is, you know, like that. Cate is above such nonsense! But she still gets an IN.
Bad shoes. Look like stripper slippers.

  • http://www.nahuli.blogspot.com Anonymous

Totally in based on the upper half alone. Yes, the pants are a little odd and the shoes are just completely wrong.  But the upper half is amazing…I want that shirt!

  • anna nusslock

I accept the blazer (kinda hard to fuck up a fitted black blazer) and like the necklace but I don’t know what she was thinking pairing that necklace with that busy shirt and horrible horrible horrible pants.  They make her look like a 14 year old who just hit puberty and got some hips but doesn’t know what to do with them.  Why couldn’t she just wear something black and streamlined and fitted and let the necklace shine?!  Why, Cate, why?!

  • http://profiles.google.com/stevens.abby A. W. Stevens

IN.  Love the necklace which looks like the architect, Gehry (look him up), designed it.  Although, the entire outfit looks like something my mum would put together minus the necklace.  Oooooooooooooooooh, tough one but the woman can do no wrong in my book!
