Hailee Steinfeld for Miu Miu
Adorable red carpet diva in training Hailee Steinfeld is the new face for Miu Miu’s Fall 2011 ad campaign photographed by Bruce Weber. We have concerns. There are, of course, the usual (and still valid) complaints that a girl so young she’s barely done baking is selling clothing to adult women. But the fashion and beauty industries have been doing that for… well, for as long as there have been fashion and beauty industries. The problem, as we see it …
She looks every inch of 15 years old, and not in some gross “Lolita” overly sexualized or infantilized way. We mean she quite literally looks like a typical 15 year old. Which would be great if this was an ad for, we don’t know… H&M or Bebe or some clothing line geared toward young girls. Sure, the Miu Miu line is considered the younger, hipper version of Prada, but come on:
That’s a dress for a grownup.
Don’t get us wrong, there’s nothing icky or sexually exploitive here; not so far as we can tell. It’s just that she’s not really the right model for these clothes. Fashion constantly uses teenage women to model its products, but generally speaking, teenage models are successful because they are capable of a range of looks, which means they can go from 15 to 25 with the right lighting and makeup. Hailee looks like a typical 15 year old wearing clothes she doesn’t feel like wearing.
