Emma Watson for Vogue

Posted on June 13, 2011

Emma Watson straps on the Eyebrows of Death and the Lip Gloss of Polyurethane for Vogue and reminds us for the last time that she’s not Hermione Granger.

Vogue July 2011 Issue
Editorial: “Emma Watson’s New Day”
By Amanda Foreman
Photographed by Mario Testino
Hair: Christiaan
Makeup: Val

How freaking fabulous is that cover? Inside, Emma opens the publicist-approved flood gates:

On struggling between work and school: “I have felt for the last ten years I have had this battle; I’ve been fighting so hard to have an education. It’s been this uphill struggle. I was Warner Bros.’ pain in the butt. I was their scheduling conflict. I was the one who made life difficult.”

On experimenting in the makeup trailer: “That was my playground. I would sit and play with lipsticks, foundations, and eye shadows; and every now and then Amanda would let me do the extras’ face paint for the Quidditch matches.”

On being romantic: “I’m a feminist, but I think that romance has been taken away a bit for my generation. I think what people connect with in novels is this idea of an overpowering, encompassing love—and it being more important and special than anything and everything else.”

That last one sounds kind of adorably young and naive. Carrie Bradshaw, you have a lot to answer for. Anyway, the pics are gorgeous. No surprise there. She’s already proven both that she can wear gorgeous clothes well and that she knows what to do in front of a camera. She’s done a really fabulous job of transitioning into her adulthood and whether she uses the service of a stylist in her life or not, her focus on style and fashion has served her very well. Future child stars take note. If you do it right, you get to pose for Vogue looking like this.

Prada Fall 2011 Collection/Model: Kasia Struss

The Prada outfits have a much more interesting look in the editorial; way more textural.

The styling really made the looks for the editorial: adding tights to the Aquilando.Rimondi, removing that polka-dotted thing from the Dolce & Gabbana and fitting the Calvin Klein dress made all the difference. Good work all around.

Speechless.  She’s looking grown-up but with a sweetness that a whole lotta transitioning girl stars (and you know who you are) would die for.

    • http://profiles.google.com/rachelruthlee Rachel Lee

Agreed! I love how she looks so blithe and genuine in the blurry shots.

  • http://www.joannao.blogspot.com JoannaOC

I’m going to have to buy this issue!

  • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

My goodness, those are delicious eyebrows. I covet!

  • http://twitter.com/wrenaria Kimmy Hescock

What a beauty. She just keeps getting prettier and prettier. Love the Prada images the best. Great color and texture. Stunning.

    • Jill Roberts

Yeah, she does get prettier, doesn’t she?  I think in her late 20s/early 30s she’s going to blossom into something spectacular.

  • Lisa

Oh, Miss GRANGER!  You fabulous thing!  I can’t wait to get this issue!

  • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

OMG I want those jeweled tights!

She looks amazing! I don’t think she’s looked this good ever! :)

I’m with you; those tights are amazing and I want them.

ditto! any idea where they’re from??

my love for this chick can overcome any horrible makeup anna puts her in.

      • http://www.tomandorenzo.com Tom and Lorenzo

They’re actually boots. Alexander McQueen nude jewel-encrusted thigh-high boots.

        • Anonymous

BEYOND fabulous. Every gal needs a nude jewel-encrusted thigh high boot in their life, non?

        • Tamisha Martin

I would do a lot of morally questionable things for those boots

  • Anonymous

She has grown into a beautiful young woman, and her snippets are always so intelligent.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

    Wow.  Amazing looking.

I think she does more for these clothes than the models do. Brava Emma!

I think that last statement is actually more of a criticism of books like Twilight. And she’s right. But yeah, she looks fantastic.

  • Bethany Fairbrother

Too much make up!  Made it all wrong!

she looks so so much better in the photos than the models do.

  • http://twitter.com/Space_Kitty Space_Kitty

The makeup shouldn’t work but it does.  Even the Sonic the Hedgehog ‘do looks completely fierce.  The tights, jewelry, shoes – all styled to perfection.  LOVE IT!

  • margaret meyers

She is wearing the shit out of those clothes.  The jeweled paisley tights look so much better than the Old Lady Black Ankle Socks do with the gold D-G mini dress.  The stylist, the hair and make-up team and the photographer were also doing very strong work here.

love the orange and red Prada dress and hat Calvin Klein looks so much better fitted on her! Great editorial!

Why did I get a tiny Christina Ricci vibe from a few of these?  Anyway, Emma looks aces.  Nicely done, Hermione!

    • http://profiles.google.com/jerome.springer Jerome Springer

I was just about to say the exact same thing.  She’s like a British Christina Ricci.

  • http://profiles.google.com/angelarosesarno angela rose sarno

well girl, nicely done! Unlike most actresses of her or any age, she has more than once face for these shots.  she’s even smiling in one!  Revolutionary!!!!

The cover is GORGEOUS! Classic Testino, reminiscent of the best of 1970’s covers.

  • scottyf

I look at these photos and Miss Watson similarly to the way I look my nieces: wistfully bittersweet remembering the precious girls they used to be; yet in dumbstruck awe of the incredible, incredible women they’ve become.

  • http://profiles.google.com/jess.zng Jessica Zeng

    love the ear-to-ear grinning!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=513945580 Megan Patterson

Are those the boots or beaded tights? They are FABULOUS. Also I totally love the Tom Ford chain mail number. One of the best fashion spreads Vogue has done in a loooong time.

  • Anonymous

Love seeing her make the most of her beauty and her youth. She is gorgeous and looks fabulous in every one of those photos. This is how to transition gracefully from child to woman. Way to go Emma!

  • http://profiles.google.com/ballinger.jl Jessica Ballinger

She looks absolutely amazing.  I love the dark bits against the light bits, and the shiny and lacquer… just exquisite.

  • http://twitter.com/Space_Kitty Space_Kitty

Wait, those are boots?  Even better!  GIVE!!

  • MilaXX

I’m not too crazy about the  mag cover, for some reason the dark hair doesn’t work for me there. The inside shots, especially the ones from the orange top/profile pic down are gorgeous.

  • Anonymous

I think this whole shoot was magical, in a totally non-Harry Potter way. I adore the colors and the incredible textures. Never really noticed how gorgeous she is till now.

    • margaret meyers

Google Cecil Beaton photographs and you will see where a lot of this photospread is coming from.
(thanks for the edit button, TLo)

  • http://twitter.com/nuanc Nancy SM Waldman

Sumptuous spread. Love that she’s smiling–genuinely smiling–in two of them.

    I am impressed.

    I am impressed.

  • Helen C

I have to say, she’s much more of a model than she’s an actress.  She’s not impressive in acting at all, actually.  But her photos are always stunning.

Also, she must has a very competent management team to get her on all these Vogue covers.  Other “Potter” actors are not getting nearly enough attention as she has.  At least she’s more legitimately famous than Blake Lively!

Thank god she’s not posing with her little brother again.  That would be creepy.

And she’s no Hermione Granger since the third movie.  The movie character is so far removed from the book character that they can just rename her.

  • Anonymous

Who knew Hermione could look so uber fabulous?  I always knew she was a lovely young woman.  But Holy Suffering S**T!!!!!  Divas of the world, tremble in your boots, a newbie has arrived to challenge your ownership of the role.

  • Anonymous

Is that last photo still her?  She’s terrific, but I’d like to see her actually DO something beyond Harry Potter instead of just appearing in tons of magazines with that headline over her face.

  • http://www.facebook.com/gretchen.sievers Gretchen Sievers

Those last two photos, if they were in black and white, look like the gorgeous movie photos taken in the 30s of all the glamour girls.  I love it!  She is really a stunning ingenue.

  • http://www.facebook.com/fiddlecub Kevin VanOrd

Emma Watson: one of few women on earth who could convert me to the other side–and keep me there. How gorgeous is she?

  • Anonymous

I don’t get the shitty, bored 15 year-old with a hacked copy of pshop motion blur on the two photos. It’s distracting from the rest of the spread.

  • akprincess72

I LOVE the genuine smiles, I think they show off her beauty!  =)

  • Anonymous

That is one pretty, pretty girl. She’s always seemed very intelligent to me, and, considering she is precisely my age, someone I would sincerely like to hang out with. If I could overcome the searing jealousy about how pretty she is, of course.

  • http://twitter.com/ShelfAfterlife Shelf Afterlife

My God that’s fabulous.  Those McQueen boots are unreal!  She doesn’t even look like herself.  Gorgeous!

  • http://twitter.com/Naddy_Lite Ms. Nadege

GREAT pics. That is some serious lip gloss. I didn’t know how I felt about it at first, but I like it now. Great color. I will definitely get this issue.

  • Anonymous

The jeweled D&G dress (WTF were they thinking with that polka dot schmatta on the runway?!?!?) and the McQueen beaded boots are perhaps my favorite look in a fashion editorial in the past 3 years. The whole thing is gorgeous. Brava.

    • Anonymous

Thank you for using the word schmatta!

  • Anonymous

WOW!one of the best Vogue covers, she totally kills it,the styling is just beyond, and the clothes are to die for.

  • Anonymous

She looks amazing! The Prada shot is my favorite, what a gorgeous couture picture.  Having said that, can I just say: SQUEEEEEEE! Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Pt. 2 on July15th! Can. Not. Wait.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

She looks great. Beautiful smile. Gorgeous clothes, and those McQueen boots are to die for.

The “I’m a feminist but…” remark. Always makes me cringe.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_6P2LSFIDJ73YZLM4XK6HCZI67E Brad Watson

Hafta say – the day after Daniel Radliffe tore up the Tonys… to see Emma looking – and speaking – so beautiful(ly)… If only American performers took their celebrity and/or their craft so seriously.  The Twlight Twerps should hang their heads in shame.  (If only they actually would.)

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_HREPOWNBVUBRIVPQCF3ST2IKDM Euphory

The star of the Twilight series is British.  He actually was a Potter cast as well (played Cedric).

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=637520850 Madison Chua

Lovely. She’s looking very good in these outfits.

  • Vaniljekjeks

I am loving how she can be sweet and fierce at the same time, while looking just beautiful.  And those McQueen boots… gorgeous!

  • margaret meyers

Nice homage to Cecil Beaton in this spread.  I thought of how Beaton dressed Gladys Cooper in My Fair Lady when I was looking at Whoopie Goldberg at the Tonys and now we get this.  Everything old is new again.

  • http://twitter.com/annie_wonder Annie

    She looks amazing. Simply amazing.

Plus, I don’t think I’ve ever seen her crack out the full on beaming smile before, it really really suits her. Gorgeous girl or what?!

  • http://twitter.com/karenrubyleo Karen

she really does know how to pose! she looks great

Rarely do I use the word ‘sumptuous’ but I’m using it now. Everything above is sumptuous and lovely. I covet all those clothes.

  • http://www.manoneileen.com Manon Eileen

She looks amazing. A job well done by everyone involved.

I see Mario has discovered cheap photo filters. Typically Terrible Testino.

  • Anonymous

Gorgeous clothes!! Love that Rimondo dress! And she is absolutely beautiful, her smile lights up the screen!! But what is going on with her upper lip in that last close-up? Some kind of weird reflection?

  • Diana Martinez

Not crazy about the cover shot, but the rest of them are amazing.  She looks fantastic and natural and amazingly powerful.  Good for her!

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

I love the first quote. Make waves, girl!!!

  • Anonymous

Very nice, I like it.  I love the outfits.  And I desperately need those McQueen boots.  Perfect for running to the grocery store or mopping the floor.

  • Anonymous

That Tom Ford dress is to die for. I want to be a gladiator princess too!

  • Tamara Hogan

    WoWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW. Absolutely freaking beautiful.

    I WANT those boots!

She looks like I wanted to when I was her age.  Gorgeous, sophisticated, and fun.

So refreshing to see a smile and not the young starlet trying to be a vixen.

  • http://summerborn.livejournal.com/ Summer Born

    LUV.  HER.

  • http://twitter.com/kmc1138 Kathleen Coyle

I need that gloss.  I would have no where to wear it and it would look good for approximately 3 seconds, but I need it.

  • Sarah Henkel

Her hand is weirding me out on the cover. Is it just me, or does it look like it belongs to a disembodied mannequin?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_FHM3TLIIU7C4LOF6PCFR3RRR6I JK

I am dating myself here, but in the picture where she’s sitting with her legs up, looking to the side, she reminds of that Robert Palmer song “Simply Irresistible.” lol Beautiful photo spread, she’s a beautiful girl and can wear all those clothes.

I LOOOOVE this editorial. That vague early 30’s look is so cool. She looks sofisticated, passionate, full of life… I want that lipstick and the Tom Ford – Undercover combo is to die for. In fact i can’t find one single piece i dislike here.

  • Anonymous

Holy moly this girl’s a stunner! I’ve always liked her and it’s fun watching her mature and find her personal style. This is a gorgeous and fun editorial.

Those McQueen boots are insane! *sigh*

  • Anonymous

I like the way she’s looking here. Her bones are getting really awesome. Just don’t lose anymore weight, though, hon.

  • Glen Coleson

Some of these look so much like Audrey Hepburn its downright eerie.

Particularly the profile in that orange Prada halfway down, and the last one of course.

  • Anonymous

I think she looks amazing!   There’s something intersting and – thank goodness – fresh about her.   It’s a welcome relief from the bland, standard fare of Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston that Vogue has been serving up so much.

  • Anonymous

Oh, and the McQueen boots are TO DIE FOR!

  • Anonymous

    Love her. She has talent.

  • http://www.facebook.com/hepzibahp Hepzibah Pyncheon

Wow, she looks amazing and has a fantastic smile.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_T24URKJGBLJQPBWCRPU37IIHLU Krab Louse

If she had “big hair” like Jaclyn Smith, she’d look like she just stepped out of an early ’80s photo shoot.  She has a face from that era.

  • Anonymous

Shes got a Clara Bow vibe in some of these! DAMN she looks fantatic

  • Anonymous

Epic! Why isn’t the stylist listed for this editorial?  She brought it and I actually forgot that it was her for a moment.
