Emma Stone Covers ELLE Magazine

Posted on June 09, 2011

Poodles, the celebrity hair-watching corner of the internet EXPLODED with excitement when Emma Stone dyed her hair red last week. We don’t blame them. The girl looks completely different depending on her hair color. She’d make a great fugitive from the law. Or a superhero with a secret identity.  Elle managed to sit her down during one of the periods when her rapidly shifting hair color happened to be blonde and shot her for some pictures.

On not being recognized as easily in public with her new look: “I mean, I haven’t been around very long. I can’t expect everyone to have seen The House Bunny. Oh God. I am having such waves of internal embarrassment, which now I’m admitting on a tape recorder. This is so one of the things I should keep in my head.”

On her obsession with Farmville: “I got to level 42, and I wasn’t doing anything else anymore, so I had to stop.”

On her career: “It’s so funny how different life could have been. I went to so many auditions. I remember my audition for Heroes. I went in right after Hayden Panettiere. Now here we are in this rented house. It feels like it just happened.”

On how her career has grown: “These past two years, I’ve stopped having to remind myself to be present, which has been the greatest gift. Because I know it’s so fleeting. I’ll kick my ass later on if I don’t enjoy it right now. But it does make you realize that so much of the joy of it is the journey. The struggle is such a lovely part of it.”

She’s charming; or at least, she fakes it well. She looks fresh-faced and cute as a blonde, but her look turns sultry as a redhead. Either way, because of the likeable personality and her own good looks, she usually takes great pictures. The problem with this editorial is the clothes do nothing for her. Actually, that’s not entirely true. The Prada and Versace look great and we love the Sergio Rossi booties. The Stella McCartney stuff is hit or miss, which is usually the case with her, but the Chloé leather overalls? Oh, dear.

And what’s with the really off-putting facial expressions in some of these shots? Why does she look like a pissed off crazy person? She’s cute and bubbly and clothes look great on her. How hard can it be?

I know the name but still have no idea who she is and don’t recognize her — I mean there is nothing about her at all that tells me I’ve ever seen a photo of her before in my life, which can’t be true, and after looking at her here she’s lovely, that’s for sure, but strangely I can’t promise you I won’t have the exact same reaction if I see another photo of her.

No, I agree.  I wandered over to IMDB assuming I had to have seen her somewhere, and even though I’ve seen stuff she’s in, I still can’t remember her face, name, or anything about whether or not I liked her.  She seems a complete blank.  (Kind of January Jonesish for me, I guess?)

      • Anonymous

That is EXACTLY how I am with January Jones – no facial recognition when it comes to her.

        • http://twitter.com/Naddy_Lite Nadege

I completely agree. When I see January Jones on the red carpet, I’m like ???????

Easy A and Zombieland are two recent movies with her in them – both had red/auburn hair on her, so she looked different. She’s got a great voice and is very funny – I’d recommend either movie pretty highly, even if you don’t usually like teen romcoms or zombie flicks.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RK5MAF2VNT32ULNYFIXDANTEC4 Terence

I thought Easy A was terribly trite and banal, especially since it was trying to be a little more self-aware than other teen romcoms, but I did think that Zombieland was excellent and different.

She’s also in Superbad as the primary love interest.

But I would stick with Zombieland if you want to love her.

    • Megan Sullivan

Easy A, Zombieland, Superbad, and The House Bunny were her biggest roles. All as a redhead. She is also in the upcoming movie The Help, which I’ve seen lots of previews for lately, and she will be in the new Spiderman franchise, which is why she originally dyed her hair blonde, I believe.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RK5MAF2VNT32ULNYFIXDANTEC4 Terence

You mean returned to blonde.  I’m not sure if she just stripped her hair or actually dyed it again, but she’s a natural blonde.  I think she said she only started getting work when her agent told her to dye it.

Anyway, she’s set to play Gwen Stacey in the reboot, who is a blonde compared to the fiery redhead Mary Jane, so we’ll see how it goes. :3

I love the first (standing in the circle) picture – the clothes, the
pose, all of it. But the “searching for my earrings after last night’s beach party debauchery” is unspeakably bad. You have to wonder what was on the editors’ minds that this one wasn’t immediately disqualified.

    • Anonymous

I actually said “oh jesus!” out loud when I scrolled down to that pic!   I kind of doubt that that’s the reaction for which the editors were going!

  • MilaXX

Gonna have to get a better look when I’m home but two things strike me; what’s up with the gold fish mouth poses, and leather overalls. Really? Someone thought that was a good idea?

  • http://twitter.com/mcglory13 mcglory13

I saw these pictures yesterday and loved them at first glance. The graphic nature of the polka dots really struck me, especially since she is so one color when she’s a blonde. That said, the repeat of the crawling in the sand photo’s not so great. I’m biased though, because I just love her in Easy A. I hope she’s like that character in real life.

  • Ashley DeHaye

I love her and think she is spectacularly underrated. If there is any justice in Hollywood (which, let’s face it, there is not eg, Ashton Kutcher) she will be a BIG STAH!

  • Anonymous

She’s the girl in Easy A, right? I haven’t seen it, but she’s everywhere right now. She really does look like a different person as a blond.

I like the spread even though there’s a toxic spill of Stella McCartney clothes. Stone pulls most of it off, and she looks amazing in the Versace. Not just anyone can get away with a Big Bird dress.

shes like kristen bell – generic looking, but charming on screen, and a pretty good actress too.

the editorial is alright. she appears to be quite the chameleon. on the close-up of her face, she looks most like herself, and its also my favourite picture.

love the white polka dots on sheer by stella mccartney!

  • sophie elliott

Lol, this girl can’t do sultry. She shouldn’t try. And she looks like Taryn Manning in half these shots and that kills it all for me. Blech.

  • http://profiles.google.com/ameliaheartsu Amelia Logan

No one before has ever tried so hard to do sexyface. It’s just bad.

  • Anonymous

The pic where she is on her knees on the beach is hilarious. She looks like she just woke up and is surprised to find herself in those clothes with someone pointing a camera at her.

  • bookish

She looks quite a lot like Michelle Williams in some of these photos. The red hair makes her look a lot more distinctive. I’ve yet to see her in a movie, but I’m looking forward to The Help this summer.

  • http://profiles.google.com/iamandyleigh Andrea Young

The expression on her face in the shot with the Prada dress that looks like fish scales is awful.  She looks like a mouthbreathing zombie in that one.  I wonder if that’s what they were going for?

I love all the polka dots, especially when they’re mixed together.  Those booties are to die for.

Red hair suits her better. I love all the polka dots and THOSE BOOTIES ARE TO DIE FOR!

  • Anonymous

Nope. Sorry. That girl was born to be a redhead. I love her, and I actually like the styling in most of the shots, but why did they direct her to utterly unrecognizable?? She’s funny, charming, sassy, clever, and adorable. Every shot of her should be BANGING.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nicole-Walraven/527225623 Nicole Walraven

i like the shoot, but the shot the cover shot seems so out of place. every other shot is moody polka dots, one is happy beach bum california girl. where does that fit in the story?

  • Anonymous

She looks like Mia Farrow, in the one with the…polka-dot bean bag made of carpet on her head.  The one of her in the Versace looks likes a completely different girl.  And the face in the Prada…c’mon!  That has to be some sort of joke by Elle…’put this one in, really, see if anyone notices!’

This is a very cute editorial. The picked great outfit that really complement the actress and they styled them better than the runway.
I particularly like the sheer floaty polka dot mini dress worn with opaque polka dot tights..

I like her, and I agree that she at least comes off as charming and self-aware. There’s too much of one designer here for my taste, but I can’t say the Stella McCartney doesn’t look good on her. I won’t even comment on the hands-and-knees-open-mouth photo.

I love the little hat she’s got in the last photo!

That horrible picture looks like she got caught in the act of trying to find something embarrassing, like an old love letter, or tampons or  something. Definitely the one to sic your agent after the editor of the shoot for. Although I do love the little booties she’s wearing in there.

  • http://www.sineaddoyle.com Sinead

Love the dress in the cover shot but the heavy eyeliner and lipstick really seems out of place with the natural freckled skin.
Coming across very mixed up to me. Interesting editorial at least.

  • Netta Ruth

She’s a comedian – I think her poses are obviously poking fun at the ridiculousness of editorial modeling.

I actually find this shoot sort of hilarious, which fits to me because she is a funny gal. It’s like Jenna Maroney doing Maxim. Plus, I love polka dots.

I LOVE that Stella white polka dot dress.  It’s not great in that shot but I think the pose is the problem.  On the runway, it is fab.

  • Inger Merete Hobbelstad

The polka dotted pumps in the picture with the Stella McCartney dress – does anyone know where they are from? Are they Sergio Rossi too? They’re pretty fabulous.

She is very cute but that yellow dress makes me think “big bird” lol

I’d like to take this opportunity to say how much I hate, hate, HATE that “doggy style” pose.

  • http://phantomminuet.blogspot.com/ MinAgain

The first white Stella McCartney dress with the dots or paillettes or whatever is fantastic!  I want it!

  • Anonymous

What the flying fuck were they thinking, publishing that photo of her with her mouth open?! HOLY HELL. Ew.

  • margaret meyers

What a fun shoot.  I think she looks really good in these clothes, and she’s a natural model — she isn’t touching her face in every picture or alway giving us bitchface.  The stylist did a great job snagging cool clothes.

And I want to be young enough to wear a polkadot bra and leather bib overalls!

  • http://profiles.google.com/galalefey Gabriella Ripoll

She looks like Goldie Hawn in that first picture, to my eyes.

But you distracted me with that opening paragraph and now all I can think about is how desperately I want there to be a Black Canary movie starring Emma Stone (possibly with Green Arrow, too – anyone got an idea for a good Errol Flynn lookalike to cast?)

  • Anonymous

A polka dotted yalmulke? I don’t know who this is. I thought she was the person who is related to Julia Roberts. Now I have to do some research. The photo on the beach in all the polka dots was very funny, like some sort of beached fish.

  • Lisa

What a fun layout!  She looks great, and the clothes are so fun!  Kudos all around!

What the shit is with the down on all fours one? And I’m just going to go right ahead and say it: I am sick of Stella McCartney.

  • Anonymous

I want the polka dot gloves.  I WANT THE POLKA DOT GLOVES!

Do polka dot tights and polka dot shoes constitute “too matchy-matchy”??  LOL.  I think the layout is kind of fun.  Just the thing to take my mind off yet another morning that is way too hot, way too soon in the summer.
