Cover Girl: Zoe Saldana for Prestige in Elie Saab

Posted on June 01, 2011

Whenever we think of Zoe Saldana, our gay fashion blogger stream-of-consciousness dialogue goes something like this:  “Fierce! Couture! WERQ! Sexy! Pointy-toed shoes and skinny jeans! Big damn skirts! Taking her bra off in one fluid motion in that CK ad! Attitude, attitude, attitude! Did we mention fierce?”

So it was with some surprise that we viewed the following covershot for Prestige:

Zoe Saldana featured in the May 2011 issue of Prestige magazine’s Hong Kong edition in an Elie Saab couture gown, photographed by John Russo.

Elie Saab Spring 2011 Couture Collection/Model:Maud Welzen (ELITE)

She’s so soft and romantic and feminine! Not that she was ever not feminine; just that we rarely ever see her in such a conventionally feminine, almost old-fashioned (in a good way) kind of look. “Fierce” is not the word that comes to mind here, but “gorgeous” will do nicely. Also, “lovely,” which is a word we should use more often, or even that old standby, “pretty,” which has been watered down as a word (much like “nice”), but really does apply here. We seem to have gotten sidetracked by wordnerd discussion, but the point remains: Pretty, soft, and romantic; three words we don’t normally use to describe Zoe, but which make a nice change from the words we normally use to describe her, “Fierce, WERQ, and Diva.”

She looks beautiful, I LOVE that gown.  The colors are so perfect for her.  I’m not completely over the moon with the hair but it is pretty.

I take that Kinsey 7 comment back: I would POLE VAULT over the friggin’ fence for this goddess.

      Girrrrl, I’d drink yo’ bathwater.

This straight girl would wrassle you for the pole.

“Lovely” has kinda been my signature word since I was a teenager in the late 70s/early 80s.  Folks who don’t know me always think I’m being insincere when I use it, “lovely” for some reason seems to have gotten a bad wrap over the last couple of decades.  But all my family & friends know that when I use the word “lovely,” it’s the highest compliment.  “Cute” is the word I use when I really think something is tacky, but am trying to spare feelings.

      Zoe looks lovely here.

I use “lovely” all the time, too! It is high compliment in my book.

To be truthful, I kind of hate that dress, but Zoe certainly does make it WERQ.

She looks really lovely here, but have you guys seen the rest of the editorial? She really can’t pose.

Wow. Stunning. I don’t normally swoon over the frou-frou, but I am this time. Saldana can work anything, can’t she? Once again, Wow.

Gorgeous! Love love LOVE that gown and Zoe too!

    • MilaXX

I think she is very smart with her dressing and this is just an example of it. She knows when to be fierce and cutting and when she needs to pull back and soften it up.

      Giving pretty a good name.

We often see a dres sthat looks good on the model or looks good on the celeb.  The fact that this is looking lovely on both is a sign of good design. It’s a good kind of beautiful dress.

    • Toni Mitt

Oh my gosh just out-and-out gorgeous!  WANT that beautiful dress NOW!

I am surprised by your impression. She balances edgy/fashion with some very feminine stuff. I think if you did a Google Image Search on her, you’d be surprised by the amount of fluffy ruffly ultra-femme.

    • Anonymous

Never seen her look better in terms of hair and make-up. LOVE the dress on her, too.

That looks like a dress made for a redhead, but it seems to work on her.

      Dear Ms. Halle Berry,

THIS is how you stun the world with your gorgeousness without stooping to hoochie-coo. Please take notes!

    • Lisa

      She looks amazing!  Just gorgeous!

though she’s beautiful enough not to need the open mouthed pose (whatever that means in my head), this is gorgeous top to bottom. I especially love the hair styling for this dress and look.

she does look very pretty here. i think it’s the finest i’ve seen her. she always looks good cos she’s so thin that that clothes hang her-upon in a 99-44/100% pure state of perfection. but i dont always like the clothes.

the word pretty is a good one. i use it a lot–& i am careful about word choice. pretty is a sturdy compliment, one sans mediablitzing supersuperlatives that render themselves unnoticed & forgotten pretty quicklike. pretty stays w/ you. it’s only unfortunate quality is that it lacks an edge.

      edited for wordnerdity.

This photo necessitates the development of new terminology: a version of WERQ, a term on par with WERQ, but that denotes more demure beauty than audacious fierceness.

i’ve always wanted a dress made of salad…

I adore that gown. Gorgeous colors, silhouette, everything. Want it bad.
