Anne Hathaway for Harper’s Bazaar

Posted on June 28, 2011

Annie gets to try out her English accent skills for her upcoming movie, so Harper’s did her all up like a 21st Century dolly bird for a cute editorial.

Gucci Fall 2011 Collection/Model: Sigrid Agren

Anne Hathaway featured in the August issue of Harper’s Bazaar
Photographed by Alexi Lubomirski.

On James Franco’s comment about her: “How did I take it? I let James know that a whirling dervish is a more flattering comparison than a Tasmanian devil. I called him, and we e-mailed a bit….In the grand scheme of things, I got to have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I met great people, wore beautiful clothes. And I got to put on a show. I don’t see a downside. Anyone who disliked my personality probably disliked my personality before the Oscars.”

On fashion: “I feel like the luckiest girl in the world when I get to wear all these glamorous clothes. [Off the red carpet,] I’ve become a lot more specific about what I love and why I’m doing it.”

She always sounds like the nicest girl in the school’s theater club. It’s a shame she’s stuck answering questions about why people hated her Oscars gig, but them’s the breaks, kid. Here, dry your tears on some free couture. As for the pics, the gal has established many times over that she can wear the hell out of clothes. She’s given an array of looks here that play to her particular bubbly-to-elegant strengths. She looks fabulous and the pictures are fun.

I thought she was good on the Oscars, better than James anyway. And she was so cute in that tuxedo where she sang. She looks great here as always. Love her playing poker with the gentleman.

I hated their co-hosting, but at least Hathaway gave it a go. Unlike Franco, who was too cool for school.

  • Anonymous

In every case she looks better than the runway model.

    • Anonymous

      She really does.

  • Kathryn Farrell

I seriously just adore her. That McQueen dress is stunning.

  • Anonymous

She is simply adorable. I love her.

  • Judy_J

She looks fabulous in these photos, and it really comes across that she’s having fun with it.  Good for her!

  • Anonymous

Damn, she looks great in couture. Especially the McQueen; I don’t know how she makes it work but, damn, does she ever.

  • Anonymous

That second cover shot is annoying the  heck out of me.  What happened here – did they paste on a too-big sized head shot?  over-curve her neck?

I will say this, she is looking great with a little aging on her face.  Brava.

  • Anonymous

I loved her on the Oscars!

That first cover…the way the word “Bazaar” falls on her forehead creates the unfortunate impression of a hairnet line. I can’t get it out of my head.

I love all the shots except the McQueen gown, which appears to be swallowing her whole.

  • Anonymous

The photos are great….except for the cover. that’s some of the worst photoshop I’ve ever seen. what did they do to her face, it looks terrible.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2FXYZIJCBOTXXYBFGMESVTCVWM bradybutkus

Is it bad that I think she looks better than the models in most the pictures?

  • http://twitter.com/jennsaysmeow Fifi LaRoux

I have a serious girl crush on her!

  • Anonymous

    She’s awesome.
Love the MaxMara and the Prada. That McQueen gown looks amazing on her.

  • Anonymous

J’adore Annie and love all of these looks on her. BUT…… WTF is up with the awful photoshop job on the last shot?!?!  Look at her feet, they are just floating in air.  Good thing she and the clothes are so darn amazing, maybe most won’t notice.

    • Anonymous

She is jumping in the air.

      • Anonymous

Yeah…. no she isn’t.  If she had jumped in the air as the photo is trying to suggest her hair and that coat dress would not be laying that smooth and neat.  Take the photo and enlarge it, you can clearly see her feet are not original to this photo.  It is a bad photoshop job trying to make a photo that really doesn’t make sense.  But she still looks good.

        • Sara__B

Hair and coat lie smooth and neat on the way up, then balloon out on the way down. She was photographed on the way up.

I thought it was a Mary Poppins reference – she’s hovering!

I thought it was a Mary Poppins reference – she’s hovering!

        • Anonymous

Yeah…really she is. Magazines can perpetrate some pretty cocked-up photoshop jobs, but here she is clearly jumping up. They aimed for a “hover” effect by capturing the shot in midair when her hair and coat would be smooth.

Plus the way she’s holding her hands and her neck, and her legs and feet, and the way the coat looks, looks like she’s on the upward part of jumping up. Try jumping like that in a full-length mirror, with pointed toes. Your hair will look fine until you come down.

          • Anonymous

I agree with the above comments. Anne was caught on the way up when her hair and coat would be flat. The biggest telltales for a bad photoshop job are reflections and shadows. Lazy photoshoppers will forget to correct these. If you look at the darkened reflection on the wall to the left, it looks accurate compared to where her feet actually are in the photo. And there are a few shadows behind that look correct too. It does not look photoshopped to me.

There is a girl in Japan who does amazing self-portrait jumping shots where she looks like she is floating or hovering, but it’s not photoshop – just amazing camera work and amazing jumping.

btw – this tangent is taking away from the fact that Anne is gorgeous in every shot! Love her!

I had no idea that Franco of all people talked smack about her hosting the Oscars.  She was doing double time to make up for his useless ass.  (He will never top Daniel from Freaks & Geeks and the more he sticks around the more I wish Joseph Gordon-Levitt had been cast in that role and we’d have never known of this person named “Franco”.)

But I irrationally love Anne Hathaway, so maybe I’m just being defensive on her behalf since she’s clearly sloughed it off. Of course, once you deal with a fiance going to prison, you can handle little digs from stoners.

As for the clothes…what is up with the photo of the model in the Chanel?  Clearly, her legs are probably ridiculously long and yet, Stumpy McCankles.  That’s just wrong on so many levels.  I’m glad they let Anne sit in that dress because it’s kind of hideous.

    • Anonymous

I love that she’s sitting next to an old man in a pub playing cards, and he’s letting her cheat. I like that photo.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Well, I don’t think he did talk smack about her.  His comment was essentially “Anyone would look stoned and out of it next to Anne Hathaway; she’s like a Tasmanian devil, full of energy.”  Everyone said he was trying to pass the blame onto her, but I don’t think that was really his intention, nor do I think he meant anything negative about her at all.  If anything, I think he was trying to pay her a compliment in a joking way to deflect the question.

And I think most people give her a TON of credit for her hosting.  Not because she was that great but because she was game, and she was busting her ass alone, while he was just kinda not there…

  • Anonymous

I love her, I love the pictures, I love the McQueen!. My only caveat is I’d like to see her push herself more in editorials, less smiling into the camera.

  • Anonymous

I don’t care the cover shot at all but LOVE all the others.

    • Anonymous

      Me too.

  • http://twitter.com/Daleksneedhugs Megan

I loved her at the Oscars. I also thought James Franco was high, so I’m not sure he has grounds to complain. She’s adorable and I want to her to be my friend.

    • MilaXX

She totally carried the Oscars hosting. Franco was either high or incapable of improvisation.

    • Anonymous

I completely agree and wish Franco would go away. Now.

Mildly irritated by the silly British cliches scattered all over the page. Enough Americans (incorrectly) think we all live in castles, go to posh public schools, wear bowler hats and drink beer warm already, thank you. Couldn’t they at least have gotten a real English person on set? Maybe it’s supposed to be cute or retro? Am I missing the point? :P

To me it’s coming off as annoying and ill-informed. The chap in the bowler hat and the rather twee school children particularly irritate me. I lived in England for twenty-five years and never saw either of those things. Not once.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_QCJEZMOV4VYMXC5WJALLZNYEB4 Mari Rose

They probably figured they needed those well-worn cliches to make up for her atrocious British accent. I saw a preview for that movie and what there was of it was just sad.

    • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

Since American fashion magazines, and Harper’s Bazaar in particular, are mostly edited by British women, we’re not the ones perpetrating the cliches.

  • kerry dee

see, i disagree. i don’t think she can wear the hell out of anything. in fact, she looks ridiculous in all of these shots. I may be bias though, as I don’t like her or think she’s that great of an actress to begin with.

  • Anonymous

She is so beautiful and cute and looks fabulous in almost everything.  I love her.

  • MilaXX

I like her. I think she looks good here. I would love to have seen the color version of that Valentino outfit so I could see if her coloring works better with it than Carey Mulligan’s. The Prada is very That Girl looking.

    • Anonymous

Mila, are you in NY? I just saw Carey Mulligan in the Atlantic Theatre Co’s production of “Through A Glass Darkly.” I had somewhat mixed feelings about the production, but her performance was stellar; I was quite destroyed by the end (it’s not a happy play), largely because of her.

      • MilaXX

        Nope I’m a Philly gal.

  • http://profiles.google.com/galalefey Gabriella Ripoll

Last Picture: looks like a superhero, just arrived, asking, “How can I help you, dear citizens?”
    Love, but also cheezy.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1303837450 Lauren Dorsee Dillon

Lovely. Wouldn’t change a thing. The outfits are perfect for her.

  • Anonymous

Is she impaled on the fence in that last picture?

(Although it reminded me of That Girl!)

    • Anonymous

      Oh geez – now I can’t un-see that!

      • Anonymous

         sorry ;o

    • http://www.facebook.com/tamisimkins Tami Brydone-Jack Simkins

I totally thought “That Girl!” Uh oh!

  • Anonymous

My favorite thing in this whole editorial is the little black hat she has on as she leans against the phone booth.  So cute, I want one!

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

      That hat is adorable.

  • Anonymous

Huh. Weird. For some reason I’m envisioning January Jones in these looks.

  • http://twitter.com/LaurenSchneider Lauren Schneider

what the hell is going on in that last picture?  is she supposed to be levitating?

anyway, love the pictures.  her smile is her greatest feature, IMO, and i’m glad that this editorial takes advantage of it.  my favorites are the one of her on the bus in that gorgeous mcqueen and the one of her playing cards.

i do wish they’d belted that maxmara look, though.

  • Megan Sullivan

LOVE her. And I think she did an excellent job at the Oscars, given that she essentially had to run the entire show by herself since James Franco was ridiculous and high.

  • oohsparkley!

I love all the pictures except the last one of her supposedly jumping.  It looks dorky and disturbingly fake.  You couldn’t jump that high without some effort showing in the face or body.  Her smile is enchanting and gives the pictures personality.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

She’s a doll.  Love the clothes and she looks great — especially that miu miu dress.  Fabulous.  She got a bum wrap for the oscars gig – that’s unfortunate.

  • Anonymous

    sorry. wrong spot.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_EMJYU3ENVAX537EZRTADIX2QLI Leela

    she is styled awesomely. LOVE.

  • Anonymous

Too much of the fake modeling smile going on.. also the gigantic couture dress hanging out/in combo with public transport (mostly busses) has been done to death. they clearly didn’t feel the need to be creative and just sit this one through with boring standard shots

  • Anonymous

whole already wore that Valentino dress?  I’m brain dead!

  • Anonymous

I think the Miu Miu dress is the standout, but she is better than the model in pretty much all of them (as others have stated.)

I am particularly impressed at how consistently well she looks here because unlike most, I don’t think she’s extraordinarily attractive – clearly not ugly, since she’s got good hair, regular features, good height, and nice skin, but at the pretty end of ordinary. She very definitely has learned what to do with what she’s got (she figured out how to carry herself in formal clothing at a young age, some on the red carpet never seem to get it), she does it, and she makes a very good appearance – I’ve even seen her, in the right lighting, clothing, makeup, etc. looking as beautiful as many people always find her.

  • Anonymous

She really does rock the clothes doesn’t she? I like how her personality comes across in the photos. She’s not your typical “wooden” celeb and I like the sparkle in her eyes. I love this editorial. Call me crazy but, for some reason, I don’t care for the shot of her wearing the McQueen gown. It’s not that it looks bad. Maybe it’s because I like seeing more of the detailing on the bodice. Whatever, I’m just being picky cuz it really is an awesome shoot.

  • Anonymous

I don’t think that cover does her any favours, but the rest of the editorial is pretty good. I love that Miu Miu dress.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Catherine-Rhodes/602850414 Catherine Rhodes

The cover is the worst shot here! I love the Carnaby Street feel of this shoot, especially the crazy McQueen gown on the red bus. Very fun.

  • Lisa

There we go!  That’s the Annie we all know and love!  After a couple of missteps in her past couple of outings, she’s back on track for this one.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Juline-Débaul/100002426617563 Juline Débaul

Kirsi Pyrhönen! My favourite model in that Alexander McQueen! With the exception of that McQueen shot, Anne Hathaway does look better in the clothes than the models do

Kirsi Pyrhönen is still sublime, though!

  • http://profiles.google.com/trashilove { edi } ilovetrash

the five year old in me is reminded of marlo thomas, especially the last two shots. i can just see her twinkling in a window.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

Super cute.  She’s looks great in everything, but she’s totally rocking that McQueen!

  • http://twitter.com/lightningvsbug Kallie Markle

Minority opinion, I know, but I really do NOT get the mass of “Annie” love, never have. I realize it’s not fair, because she probably is a genuinely nice person, but I cannot stand the ‘awe-shucks’ persona she keeps flogging. Maybe if she said something interesting once in a while? I dunno. I just….nope. Blah. She was great in Rachel Getting Married, but that doesn’t make me forget that she freely committed to Bride Wars and I’m seriously skeptical of her presence in the next Batman movie. I don’t think she models, I think she does her cute-dork-nice-girl thing in fancy clothes and I ain’t buying it. Count me out.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=506473106 Mori Clark

love all the pics except for the cover- her face has something sliiightly off in it that i can’t place ( the mouth?). everything else is stunning though.

    • margaret meyers

She looks tired and hard.  Her face looks hard.

  • Helen C

I thought her Oscar gig went well.

    • margaret meyers

I agree.  She came off well, he looked like a prat.

  • Kate Small

I can’t stand her, but she does look consistently adorable in these sorts of mid-century inspired editorials.

  • Anonymous

Very cute!  And pretty!  Except the last picture.  I know she’s jumping, but it looks disturbingly like she’s been stuck up on that rail fence which is behind her.  *shiver*

    • Anonymous

Haha, that’s exactly what I thought! ‘did they pin her to the railings?’.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sauchih Sau-Chih Feng

She did a good job at the Oscars, she was elegant and funny and SOBER. I agree that the McQueen dress is stunning, but I think she looks best in the MaxMara and Chanel photos, she looks less styled for a shoot and more like a girl out and about in London town!

  • Anonymous

best shot is at the phone box. Very Carnaby Street.

  • Anonymous

I love the Prada on her, and I also love the phone booth shot. She looks great with bangs.

  • Anonymous

She was actually fabulous on the Oscars.  James Franco was so miscast and incompetent that she had to work twice as hard.  He is an interesting and hard-working person, but whoever thought the Oscars was the gig for him was seriously misguided.

  • Glen Coleson

that second picture is stunning, i can’t stop looking at it. Well done Bazaar, well done.

  • Anonymous

so she is officially the current Julia Roberts yes?

  • Annelies Cooper

gah, I can’t help it. I just hate her for no reason.

  • Anonymous

And she can levitate too! Love the Miu Miu and the Max Mara and the Marlo Thomas Prada coat. I covet them.

  • Amanda in Austin

I love all of it except that last look. That one’s a record scratch, to me.  I adore Anne Hathaway, and I want to be her when I grow up.

  • Anonymous

Love them all. Except the cover with the type on her forehead.
    The “jump” is super.

  • Anonymous

I love that Miu Miu dress.  Love it!

  • Anonymous

The clothing and styling are great, but she bores me. However, I  really do like the poker scene and twiggy photo.

  • Anonymous

    love those python boots

  • Margot Brose

That last photo is magic! She looks like Mary Modern Poppins <3 but her Oscar persona was really corny v_v even though she's a sweet girl. James Franco was enjoyable because he was mocking how pretentious the oscars really were, even if it was unconciously done.

  • Anonymous

That Alexander McQueen gown is absolutely jaw-droppingly stunning.  AH looks delightful and delovely.  As for the Oscars, she did her best it was just a really bad choice to go that route in the first place.

  • sonictofu

Love the fresh, back-to-school fall feel of this editorial.

  • Anonymous

She looks beautiful and spunky, but this is one of the few times I see the problem with actresses “modeling” by smiling straight at the camera
