Yea or Nay: SJP’s Televangelist Hair

Posted on May 10, 2011

You guys, Sarah Jessica Parker attended the 11th Annual Robin Hood Foundation Gala in New York City with total crazy-lady hair. Check it:

Dress: Halston Heritage

Jesus, Mary and Oprah, what IS that? What drunk queen talked her into going out in public like that? Sarah? FIRE HIM. He was obviously just messing with you.

But minions, perhaps you should make the call on this one. Maybe it’s cheeky and joyful and we’re just not seeing it (because we’re blinded by how ridiculous and unflattering it is).

You tell us:

SJP’s drag version of Samantha Stevens hair: YEA or NAY?

    • Gary

Yeah to the dress, and while I really endorse big hair — this is some scary business on Mrs. Broderick — unless that’s what’s holding her face up so nice and taut — Aquanet seems a little less scary than surgery! Love, Gary

    • Anonymous

Ugh, horrible. Then again, like I said on your FB page, she’s at the Robin Hood gala, so maybe she’s hiding Friar Tuck under there…

      OUT

    • halley

A million times NAY, you guys got it right!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=602493177 Lily Pad

i kinda love it. she was feeling like she needs a helmut. sometimes we all feel like that

    • Anonymous

She’s too tiny for such big hair, but the more I look at it, the more I like how it frames her face.

    • Wendy

Just waiting for Tammy Faye to re-incarnate….. (love the dress, and why don’t stars get mani/pedi? those nails are awful!)

      • Lulu

I hate this unpolished nails thing just as much as I hate the no/very little jewelry thing. It all appears to be part of the same trend, celebs downplaying their wealth so as not to appear so rich and spoiled and insensitive during this economic crisis.

        • Anonymous

They don’t want their heads to start showing up on pikes. When people are hungry they get angry and if they were making a point of showing off their wealth ostentatiously they might start finding themselves targets.

    • Anonymous

Aquanet, indeed! How many cans were wasted on this horrific assault on ozone layer? The color of the dress is divine, but the hair is not. It really elongates her face and horsifies it even more than usual. Simply put, OUT.

    • Nevermind

Sarah, Sarah, Sarah. Who does your hair? An enemy?

    • http://profiles.google.com/sauchih Sau-Chih Feng

      NEIGHHHHHHHHHH

      • meggwtw

Hahaha I have to agree and say NEIGH.

    • cathy

nay. i don’t like her hair, normally, and i don’t like this. but the rest of the look is fab.

    • fafafab

      oh God, no

    • KarlJ

I vote YAY! I love the return of big big hair.

    • Marzirocks

Big is your movie husband, NOT your hair.

      NAY!!!

    • Anonymous

      Nay!

Her makeup looks better than usual.

    • Bunny

Cheryl Cole turned up for the x factor kick off with a similar do. There must be a bunch of televangelist queens doing this doing this to women all over red carpet events. O to the U to the T.

    • TomTom

that clutch is FABULOUS. Is that stingray? beautiful.

      the hair is crazy.

    • http://twitter.com/margo8461 Marguerite

      Oh Dear. Nay, Nay, Nay…..

    • http://profiles.google.com/xelad007 C Deal

Channeling Tammy Faye for the win!

    • http://profiles.google.com/epilonious Peter White

I like it, but only because it makes me think of the “Jeweled Panties” episode of SiTC. More specifically, the line “Wow! That is some Big Hair!” (the hair-gay immediately going ‘mmmm, thank you’ made me love it).

The fact that she is alternating between what I am interpreting as a “Glamour face” and bemused resignation makes me squee for reasons I cannot fathom.

      Yay!

    • Kcjamison

Like the hair. Like the dress. They so do not complimented each other, Beach dress with ball gown hair. NOOOOOOOO!

    • Anonymous

I love gloriously, turbulently big hair on a face that’s suited to it. But this is a long face wearing tall hair, and all of it piled onto a narrow body. The result is not tousled turbulence, but a blonde-topped purple Q-Tip.

    • http://twitter.com/adoreadora Dora B.

um, definitely NAY. and her nails look gross.

    • Pamela L.

I love the dress and the color. The hair is very Jackie Collins, but I think because she wears her hair in so few different styles that I find this a fun look.

    • http://twitter.com/dennang Dennis Nangle

Liked it better on Cheryl Cole at the X Factor audition tapings this past weekend. SJP’s face doesn’t take too kindly to this kind of blowout

    • shams

      nay, nay, nay, nay, nay

    • Anonymous

Well, nay, although I love the dress and the makeup and the waves/curls. If her hair wasn’t standing straight up from her forehead, she would look fantastic.

    • Anonymous

I think I could be into the hair if she was wearing an outfit a little bit more wealthy matron/Auntie Mame-ish. Or a caftan! I’d be totally into the hair if she was wearing a caftan. However, with the dress she is wearing – no.

    • Anonymous

Is that even a question? NAY.

    • http://twitter.com/tylka5 K S

Love the color and dress on SJP. Want the bag. Hair to the no!

    • http://verenahafner.wordpress.com Verena

Goodness me, she looks like she just stepped out of a wind tunnel!

      verenahafner.wordpress.com

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jonika-Tannous/1159464315 Jonika Tannous

I live in Texas and this is STILL unacceptable. She could hide a baby in there…

    • Nancy

      High priced call girl.

    • Breeze

Love her, but this is a shame. The eye makeup makes her best feature look squinty. Her worst feature, her nose, is the unfortunate center of attention. Her long face appears longer, and even her ears look prominent. I so wish she would go to a new hair stylist, get it cut, and accept the fact that she’s not 25 any more. She has a rockin’ bod and amazing style.

    • Willieb93

Oy! from the MET gala to this…so disappointed. Fire your gays. SJP, I’m crying. :(

    • Hannah

I love it, especially with the simple dress. I feel like if anyone could pull off cheeky hair, it’s her.

    • Anonymous

That is just crazy hair! And, iIt looks like her face was photoshopped onto someone else’ head. Creepy and crazy.

She’s lost any of what little bit of style cred I still had for her.

Looks good from the neck down…but I shudder to think what she’d look like once she puts on that matching wrap. ugh.

gotta go with NAY! (or is it neighhhhhh!) ;)

    • marlie

Out. All of it. The hair, the dress. Just… OUT.

    • elleg929

NAY – when did she become a NJ Housewife?

    • SQ

Love her to pieces, but that hair is like totally NAY!!!

    • http://twitter.com/pinup_ghoul Beth

She looks so awesome from the forehead down. I love the dress on her, and of course her figure looks amazing, because it’s an amazing figure. The hair? Noooo! Too tall, too big… she doesn’t need the extra height, and it just looks messy. How cute would this have looked with a chic chignon and a cheeky hair accessory?

    • http://profiles.google.com/laura.jane.ogorman Laura O’Gorman

Oh dear god…She looks like a mom who hasn’t left the house since the 80s who is now on her way to chaperone her teenage daughter’s prom.

    • http://profiles.google.com/dlaferry Dianna LaFerry

Nay! and that dress is so bright that i arrives 3 blocks ahead of her…

    • GQ

NAY. NAY NAY NAY. NAAAAAAY. NAY TO THE FOURTEENTH POWER.

    • Lizzyisi

Can’t decide how I feel about the dress–but that hair is, in fact, hideous.

    • Anonymous

I think she looks fabulous in that dress, and I have to say I prefer the Lincoln Tunnel entrance to the usual step & repeat backdrops.

As for the hair, it reminds me of that SATC episode where Carrie was a model. It is reminiscent of Samantha Stevens, so if I was Matthew Broderick I’d be worried (remember what happened to Daren).

      –GothamTomato

    • ask

Color it black, gray and white – and I get Madeline Khan’s hair in Young Frankenstein

      Her nails are scary.

    • Kate

I vote YEA! Big hair can be awesome if it’s a once-in-a-while sort of thing. Girls want to play with their hair and try different things!

    • Anonymous

It’s not flattering, but man, she is working the shit out of it! I’ll give it a “yea” just for that.

    • profplum

Nay, nay, nay. It ages her 30 years, and she doesn’t need that.

    • Queeniethebold

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, that is The. Worst. Hair. Ever. She looks like a giant-headed freak. Awful, just awful! In fact, the hair is so bad that it completely negates anything positive that might exist WRT dress, etc.

    • http://profiles.google.com/lindsaytdesigns Lindsay T

Yay! The hair is fun; let’s leave it at that.

    • amused kitten

holy shit, no. She looks like she fell asleep with a crap load of hairspray in her hair, woke up, realized she had this Gala thing, tried to brush her matted mane and gave up.

    • http://visceralresponse.com Dina dV

Nay, and not just for the hair which is way too big since she’s already a bit of a lollipop…no, Nay because you can see her black bra under her purple dress. Wasn’t cute when Patricia Fields forced us to look at Carrie’s black bras under her diaphanous white blouses and it’s still not cute 10 years later.

    • VirginiaValerie

Girl can do whatever she wants!

    • http://twitter.com/JewbilantStacy Stacy

That would be a big, horsey NEEEEIIIIIGGGGHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Anonymous

You know, I’m going with YEA on the hair! It looks fun to me and I think she was just being kind of over the top and silly with it. We biological women cannot cede the entirety of fun hair to drag queens, now can we?

    • CNM

Yeah to the dress, nay to the hair. I like big hair but this hair is too Bride of Frankenstein.

    • BlueFairlane

What? Skip past that man and let me see Sarah Jessica Parker!

    • Anonymous

Out for the crazy hair, but I love the dress and purse.

    • Mariah

The stylist secretly hates her. It’s the only explanation. It’s a shame because the dress is nice.

    • Anonymous

The second photo looks like she had her head photoshopped on

    • Sarah

Remember the episode where the girls went out for Charlotte’s bachelorette party (The Trey years) and she had giant hair propped up with a headband? So adorbs. She needed something like that here.

      • http://twitter.com/marla_melendez marla melendez

I was going to write that she needed like a headband or something. I don’t mind the big hair, but I do mind that it looks unfinished…It’s like a ShearGenius challenge and the contestant ran out of time during the “BigTexan-Opera Challenge” and this is what they had to show.

    • Later Tater

Oh how sweet! She let James Wilkie do her hair…

    • Anom

I don’t like the hair, but I do think it opens up her face and emphasizes her eyes, which her usual styles don’t do

    • http://profiles.google.com/thekate Kate Musgrove

I kind of love the whole look. Everything else is flawless and the hair is absolutely ridiculous but still works for me. So: yea.

    • dee

Yea to the dress, nay to the bra, Nay to the when-the-damn-did-SJP-get-Madonna-arms, and Hell to the NAY to the hair.

    • SBG

NO to the hair. Great dress.

    • Cecerslouisers

Some women can pull this hairstyle off. SJP is not one of them.

    • Gianni Rubino

SJP’s ‘do is making me laugh and smile quite a bit. With all the gratitude I can muster, it’s a ‘no.’ I may just print out the pic and put it up on the wall. Between SJP’s big hair and all the (unintentionally) flying animal pics on the wall, I might never frown again.

      Gianni Rubino

    • Lizzy

That hair is hideous. It seriously detracts from the sleek, unfussy look of the dress. I get the idea behind the clutch, so it gets a pass from me, but I think it’s an ugly clutch.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kimberley-Debus/1484835681 Kimberley Debus

NAY! Holy cow, how many cans of Aqua Net had to die to create that monstrosity?

    • http://twitter.com/erincropper Erin Cropper

      She looks like Cruella DeVille!!

    • SMM

I do like her, and the dress and accessories are wonderful. If this were an IN/OUT post, pertaining to the whole, I would say IN, but this is not a IN/OUT post, and we are talking only about the hair. From that point of view, it is most certainly a NAY. It is just too much.

    • Esme

      Peggy Bundy NAY.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kimberley-Debus/1484835681 Kimberley Debus

NAY! How many cans of Aqua Net died to create that monstrosity? Will someone think of the children?

    • Anonymous

I love her. I always will and the dress is lovely but….nay.

    • JMB

Facelift in a can!!! Even for Texas, that is some big hair. That’s a NAY — but I do like the clutch! ;)

    • http://www.manoneileen.com Manon Eileen

This made me laugh so hard. Nooooooo! No no no no no. It looks absolutely ridiculous.

    • Katey

Good god. I don’t normally comment, and I’m normally on SJP’s side, but I had to say…this is the worst. Nay!

    • kayce.

you know, on its own, it’s NOT ok, but considering the simplicity of the dress and accessories, i like it all put together. and i REALLY LOVE the dress. gorgeous.

    • Kaylie

After a long time of “no big hair,” yesterday Cheryl Cole wears this SAME hairstyle, and today SJP does. It seems so copycat and desperate. So unlike SJP. It makes me sad. The hair doesn’t look good on either of them. It’s very “country music singer from the 80s/90s.” Gross.

    • mjude

      good grief…nay

    • tom

“Orlando! She looks FABULOUS! Now, we need big hair to go with the big eyes.” Where are the jeweled panties and FANTASTIC coat to with them?

      • tom

I like to think this is the direct result from being too close in proximity to that big douche bag, Andy Cohen. All his hot air inflated her hair.

    • http://www.facebook.com/sorana.tarmu Sorana Tarmu

NAY!!! SJP needs bangs, not volume above her forehead! Crazy lady/Peg Bundy…

    • Lulu

Not only that, but her blues are clashing. NAY.

    • Paula

      I’m kind of digging it.

    • http://profiles.google.com/kathy.thomas589 Kathleen Thomas

Love the dress – hate the hair. She is out simply for trying to bring back 60′s Stewardess Hair.

    • http://profiles.google.com/landwlkr Terra Walker Mrkulić

      Big Hair – OUT

    • Anonymous

      Nay. That is all.

    • MilaXX

Nay. I think they may have been trying to counteract the simplicity of the dress with out there hair, but this just ain’t working. I would have preferred a simple pony tail or even a plain curled do’ over this Tammy Faye baker look. Also not loving the dress n her because of the overdeveloped Madonna arms.

    • Lamoll

I really, really like it: it balances her long face and has an elegant, retro, Baby Jane Holzer look.

    • aussiegal77

      Nay. Crazy pants.

    • Tom In Chicago

I like the hairstyle, just not the color. If the ends weren’t such a different shade from the front, it would look great (I’d go for darkening the whole lot to her “natural” color.)

    • Anonymous

Oy. There’s really nothing else I can say.

    • Tamela

That’s what I have to fight my hair from doing naturally. Huge Nay!

    • http://www.facebook.com/seelebrennt Christina Diaz

      HIDDY.

    • Jill

WHAT IN THE- HOW DID THEY- WHY IS SHE- I CAN’T EVEN-

      NAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.

    • Lala

Nay. While it’s a good thing she’s exploring new directions in hair, this is rapidly approaching the event horizon of total style chaos.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_UCLO5V2YD36T7QMPKOC7YXPOFU Erica

Nay–the hair is way too big. BUT, it does soften her features nicely–I think she’s too much with the tight ponytails and such, since she has such a thin face. So, what would work? The same idea, but just not as much lift?

Also, I like her naked nails, because I do that–keep my fingernails filed but polish-free and save the polish for the toes. Less maintenance that way.

    • MC

She has never really figured out how to let her hair flatter her face. This awful and sadly, she’s done worse things with her hair.

      • MC

        But I like the dress.

    • MoHub

I don’t think the fullness is as much of a problem as the fact that it’s all pulled up and swept back from her face—not to mention the length. I’m thinking a semi-full Sassoon Kwan bob would do wonders to give her face breadth.

    • Sara L.

Um, that’s, um….yeah, I’m gonna have to go with Nay.

    • Anonymous

Without question a big fat NAY. She needs to fire to the person who gave her that scare-do

    • zanna6

      Hell to the NO!

    • Sara__B

Nay, nay, a thousand times, nay! SJP is working this huge hair, simple gown combination, but all big hair (and the hairspray and teasing needed to hold it up) should stay in the mid-1960s where it belongs!

    • CAT

      N.O.

It’s like an alien head with an Elizabethan hairline. Just Wrong.

Too bad, cuz the dress and purse are fab.

    • a_said

I have more issues with the dress than the hair. I like the hair, if anything I think that it should be even bigger. but not too much bigger.

The ensemble is not working for me because there is something incongruent, like the hair is late 60s / early 70s and the dress is mid-late 70s / early 80s.

I debated whether it is the dress that I dislike or that I just don’t care for it on Sarah Jessica Parker, and I am leaning towards the latter, although it does not look horrendously bad on her. The dress just seems better suited for a Victoria’s Secret model or the sex kitten celeb of the moment. Also, interestingly, even though I am not crazy about the dress on SJP, it has made me interested in seeing more from the Halston Heritage label with which SJP is affiliated.

I am also curious about the make and model of the bra she is wearing.

    • Momzilla

Hair that big needs more make up and more dress.

    • a_said

      Yea for the hair.

      Nay for the overall look.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5G3FWO4MX33BKRU3D4WSXUVPVY Amy M

Doesn’t work. The dress is a little too plain with no dramatic interest to warrant such huge hair. I get that she’s relying on the hair for drama, but it just doesn’t work.

      OUT.

    • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

I dunno. I kind of like her “higher the hair, the closer the God” do. Brings a little crazy.

    • Momzilla

That picture with the clutch! Not only is there no polish but it looks like she’s lost all her acrylic nails. Something is seriously wrong for SJP to be out with crazy lady hair, bad makeup and no manicure.
This is an SJP imposter, someone has got the real SJP and is holding her captive.

    • Anonymous

She looks like 1/2 of a very famous pop art collecting couple from the 60′s. Except he maxi dress should be a wild print. Yea!

    • Becca

all I can think of the explain this is that maybe it was a costume party? I was to see video of her all day trying not to smash it every time she got into cars or went through doorways. Maybe she’s smuggling something in, like razor blades.

    • Jsrockga

For once, I think SJP looks decent. The hairdo is flattering to her face and at least a little out of the box, letting in some much needed fresh air to her usually monotonous and thoroughly conventional appearance

    • suzq

I’m going to go against the grain here. It’s cheeky and fun and a much better change from the severe, pulled back do she often wears. Love the purse with the dress.

    • Anonymous

      I like it!

    • Nariya

      Hahahahahaha! Hahahaha! Ahahahahaha! Nay!

    • The Lady V

Naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay! Drunk queen, indeed. Next time, get sober gay, please…

the dress is so boring, she was trying to attract attention away from it with a electro shock hair. NAY

    • http://profiles.google.com/andrearasdale andrea rasdale

NAY! I don’t know if someone dared her and she is getting money from wearing her hair like that or if they are making a new Frankenstein movie and she is trying to snag the bride of Frankenstein role.

    • http://profiles.google.com/andrearasdale andrea rasdale

NAY! I don’t know if she was dared and is getting money from wearing her hair like that or if they are making a new frankenstein movie and she is trying to snag the role of the bride of frankenstein but this is not ok.

Tammy Faye called and she wants her hair back… oh good god NAY!

    • maya

if this was ANY other person i’d say nay… im torn on this. she’s such a fashion queen so ive always trusted her instincts… but it does look ridiculous. not a yea, but i dont have the heart to give her a nay either :(

    • Judy_J

Sweet Jebus! Who in the world did this to her? This ‘do looks like it was done for a really bad 1980′s Cosmo cover. Need I say it?…..OUT!

    • Kathleen

Yes! you saw the same thing I did.

I’ve heard of the saying the bigger the hair, the closer to God, but goodness. You’re not Dolly Parton, honey. You cannot pul this off. I love everything else though. Shame.

      NAY.

    • Mike

LOVE it! It is TOTALLY Samantha Stevens circa 1968 (before she straightened and cut it for the final two seasons) Although, it SHOULD be only worn at night now walking into the opera or something, not the 4th level of a random parking garage.

    • Lunacy

I’m not saying I like it, but I think [per usu] she is ahead of a trend with this. I’ve started to see Peg Bundy hair in photos recently.

    • http://profiles.google.com/rpcabonargi Rebekah Cabonargi

What did she stick her finger in a socket? Nay, nay, nay!

    • Anonymous

Very Helen Gurley Brown. (albeit with lots more hair)

TODAY, I’m going with NAY. She doesn’t need to go this far yet. I’d say it’ll come to be a yea, as she ages a little, for formal occasions, if she doesn’t want to go to an up do. Or if it just collapsed a little teeny bit up top.

    • Anonymous

um, i kinda like it. but as someone who has hair similiar to SJP, i too fight the urge to get as close to jesus as i can from time to time…in the hair sense. the biggah the bettah, dahling.

    • azulBK

Yay. I think the hairdo takes the edge off her, which is a good thing.

    • Carolyn

Oh, hell, no. Love the dress and clutch, but that hair! No.

    • Jimdmcarthy

GASP! It’s so crazy and so big that I want to call it in, but I can’t! I just can’t!

    • Kimmeister

NAY on both the hair and the elongated wife-beater of a dress she’s wearing (complete with visible bra).

I LUFF IT. ALL OF IT. Maybe I’m just in a good mood, but still.

Apologies if this posts twice. Disqus and I are having issues today, it would seem.

Well, the high society ladies of Texas and every incarnation of the Real Houswives have to be high-fiving over that ‘do. SJP took a bold step for all of woman-kind that aspires to big hair. I suspect a small animal, maybe two, are tucked in there for warmth.

On the bright side, that purse is killer. Unfortunately, no one will notice it because they’re all averting their eyes from that head catastrophe.

      From WWTDD.com
“Sarah Jessica Parker went to a party last night for the Robin Hood Foundation, a charity whose goal is to end poverty. Because she’s very concerned. She cares a lot. But before that she put on some fist-sized diamond earrings and picked out a jewel encrusted crocodile-skin bag, then teased her hair up like she was in Poison and/or the ThunderCats. Then she went to the party. Then she went home. “If only there was something I could do,” she thought as she took off her diamonds and threw them in the pile.”

I love big hair but my personal bug-bear with it (when doing it on myself) is when you can see the light through it, for me that shatters the illusion because everyone can see that underneath it’s a big tanggly mess! I can’t stop thinking about how long it would’ve taken to brush it out before bed. Oot.

Big ol’ nay. There’s big sexy hair, and then there’s this; looking like you leaned over a fan that was blowing hot air and the 80s version of Rave hairspray (aka spray cement) at the same time.

this reminds me of her hair in that episode of sex and the city when she modeled in some fashion show and fell down on the runway. but that was kind of fab big hair, and this not. reason being, this kind of hair only looks good on models and only while they’re actually on the runway or in front of a camera. it has a shelf life of 30 mins, then it starts looking beat. obviously. did every friend and employee she has watch her kick a puppy while swinging a kitten around by it’s tail, making them hate her so much that they let her go out like this? i mean, what? it’s ridiculous, and totally unflattering. i can’t, and neither can any of you…OUT

Love the dress- LOVE! Love the bag. The hair is WAY too big for her! This would look great if she did one of her long and loose center parts, with the loose wavy curls around the bottom, know what I mean?

This is one of the dangers of women’s hair after they reach their 40s and put too much product in it — 10 or 20 years ago her hair wouldn’t have done this and I’m thinking she didn’t expect it to turn out quite that way but didn’t have time to completely wash it all out and start again.
