Michelle Obama in Tom Ford

Posted on May 25, 2011

Shelley O SHUT. IT. DOWN. At the Buckingham Palace state dinner. Check it:

Knocked that one out of the park, wouldn’t you say? Even Phil looks impressed. It seems to be a very deliberate Jackie Kennedy/Oleg Cassini kind of look, especially with the opera gloves. The halter neckline is hers to own. She always looks fantastic in it. We normally can’t stand opera gloves. We can’t look at them without thinking of Gypsy Rose Lee or Miss Piggy, and while both those ladies have their charms, style icons they are not. They’ve always looked so dated to us, but damn, if they don’t work here. If there’s one time when a gal should want to look like a princess, it’s when you’re the star guest at Buckingham Palace. And we just love the look on her face because she knows – with absolute certainty – that she looks amazing. Well done, Shelley and Tom. When the inevitable coffee table books about her style in the White House come out, this will surely be a highlight.

She looks stunning! This is a dream dress.

    • http://heartprintandstyle.blogspot.com Vivi N

Such a gorgeous couple! Michelle looks amazing in that dress. The dress looks amazing on her. Wearing opera gloves just always seemed like a cornball move to me. But it absolutely works with this dress. I guess having dinner at the Buckingham Palace might have something to do with it.

Perfect gown for a formal state dinner with the Queen of England.

    • Anonymous

Oh, yikes. I don’t think she shut it down at all. I think the dress is awful on her. The thick straps cutting her all into pieces, the too-high boob-hugging empire waist with the fussy bow– actually, it’s an awful dress. Too much going on. And then she adds another dramatic body-cutting dimension with the opera gloves… very, very bad. All I see is a floating head and two chunks of arms. Hate it.

      • Anonymous

Sorry, you are way of base here.  That is a stunning gown for such an event and it fits her perfectly.

      • Anonymous

I actually don’t like it either.  It’s hard to actually come up with why, though.  The dress seems well proportioned on it’s own, but something about the fit on her I just don’t like.  Hate the gloves, too.

        • Joan Hedman

I’m in the NAY column also — to me, the halter straps accentuate the roll of her shoulders.

      • Anonymous

I’m not a fan either. The bow looks juvenile to me and it sorts of makes her have a titscrepancy.

      • Anonymous

Yeah, I’m sorry to say that I don’t like it either. I love it when she bares her shoulders and arms, because they’re so nicely toned, but something about this dress is making her torso look bizarrely short, and the whole thing is throwing her proportions way off. I mean, leave it to her to find a gown that features her favorite accessory, the underboob belt.

Oh, Obamas. I have hearts in my eyes. Can’t get over how beautiful she is – and how adorable he is. Is that the definition of a face-splitting grin or what :)

      • Anonymous

I agree – the dress doesn’t need the bow – otherwise, perfection!

        • Anonymous

Exactly. Love all of it. Just not the bow!

Absolutely spot on dress- it is a pity though that she doesn’t get to wear some of these outfits more than once.  I would want to wear that gown as often as possible!

    • Jennifer Coleman

      Outstanding.

    • Anonymous

I think she wears the dress well but I don’t care for the dress.  The halter neck is a flattering style for Mrs. O but this looks too tight, and I hate the little extra bow in the front.  The first thing I thought of was “debutante dress”……….I think it’s the 100% virginal white.  Plus of course the gloves,  It just looks more like a costume than an outfit.  He looks amazing, and they both have very sincere and happy smiles.  Just can’t get behind the dress.  :-(

    • Anonymous

Can I saw how much I am adoring Mr. O in his tails?! Shelly looks lovely too. I’m not feeling those gloves, but I’m sure they were necessary. To my eye I think that’s why the dress may look a little tight – it looks like her arms are suctioned to her body almost! I also find it pretty comical how much taller the Obamas are than Betty & Phil.

It seems impossible for T Lo to be impartial when it comes to the Obamas. “Peacebang” nailed it on the head.

      • Anonymous

Yes Little Buddy, and it’s really a shame too because impartiality is such an important requirement for bloggers. I fear that this shortcoming will prevent Tlo from ever making a go of this blogging thing, and they will be left with nothing more than their current 2 million readers a week.

        Sad really.

Tomato: your constant need to snap and snark never fails.  Anyone who differs comes in for a sarcastic or nasty whooping’ — your brittle narcissism reminds me of Sarah Palin.

          • kim i

well, the difference between GT and sarah palin, from where this relatively inactive poster sits, is that GT is usually right.

            • Anonymous

Sure but that’s not my point. What’s similar is her incessant need to belittle other people’s opinion on an opinion forum, and to do it in the most condescending way possible. It’s a character trait, and has nothing to do with one’s position on politics, fashion or anything else.

            • Anonymous

You need to stop taking these sorts of things so personally!  If it seems “incessant” than it’s only because the comments GT replies to are incessantly insipid.

          • kim i

And she must be wearing gloves because the queen is. Maybe is goes with the white tie rules over there.–GothamTomato

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=696212398 Courtney Tyne

I read somewhere else that the occasion was ‘white tie’ meaning women are required to wear at least elbow-length gloves. It may look overdone/debutate-y to some, but it was a royal state affair – not a good place to rock the boat! I think Michelle looks great.

        • Anonymous

My research said the same thing, yet ignorant folks just want to dis the gloves.  Whatever.  They both look great.

          • Anonymous

I agree. I think it’s been so long since anyone followed protocol and rules of etiquette that no one knows what they are anymore. The gloves are fab.

I know she’s a role model for all girls.

But I have to say: knowing that my nieces, and the little mahogany and mocha girls running around my neighborhood, have a constant reminder of all that black beauty can be, puts a gigantic lump in my throat.  Take it away Stevie:

      “She’s a miss beautiful supreme
A girl that others wish that they could be
If there’s seven wonders of the world
Then I know she’s got to be number one.
      She’s a girl that can’t be beat
Born and raised on ghetto streets
      She’s a devastating beauty–
A pretty girl with Ebony Eyes”

      V. v. nice, Mrs. O.!!   All-white-with-gloves Deb Effect muted, for me, by her statuesque grandeur.

Surely something way more interesting (less juvenile & random than that little bow) could have been done to ‘finish’ the wrap on the midriff’ . . .  but not a big enough deal for me to say “ew.”

I’ve always wondered with long gloves.  Do you take the gloves off when its time to eat?  What do you do with them?  Just seems like leaving the gloves off the outfit would be easier.

Do like the dress though.  He proportions look better, too often her clothes make her look more bottom heavy then they need to.

      • Anonymous

Traditionally, you take them off for a formal dinner. You can leave gloves on for informal things like tea time… *nerd*

She looks perfectly and regally appropriate, love the makeup and hair, accessories are fine, but I’m not crazy about the dress on her.  There’s too much going on around her chest/waist.  It’s distracting.

the opera gloves are a necessity of Royal protocol. One does not go sleeveless on Her Majesty’s invitation.

Michelle looks great here. Usually I find she will muck it up with some dump pin or something but this is perfect.

I wish she dressed like this more often. Simple clean lines really becomes her instead of a heavy brocade that could double as sofa upholstery

She’s beautiful and this is a perfect dress for her.  Most men look a little uncomfortable in tails and Mr. Obama is no exception, but he is handsome and fabulous nonetheless.  And let’s not forget the queen.  She looks very pretty here.

TLo, no! Neckline + posture makes her shoulders look broad and droopy. And the bodice gives her yoga-top chest. Narrow that strap harness by 1.5 inches and pull her shoulders back and then maybe we’d be talking. Color is fantastic though.

    • http://twitter.com/velleitas Isy

Pres Obama looks so awkward and boyish in that suit… it’s totally distracting me. They should have just let him come in a normal tuxedo because all this leaves me with is the urge to call him Geoffrey.

But Mrs Obama looks great– white just looks perfect on her.

Cosign completely.  I watched the live feed of this and gasped and KNEW she made TLo proud.  Also?  It was adorable that the President began his remarks with a hello from Sasha and Malia to the Queen – they really liked meeting her two years ago.  TOTAL ADORBS.

    • Anonymous

Nah, I’d say at best a double. It’s just too much. Too much fabric, too much one color, too much going on at the waist and bodice. Though I agree the neckline is good on her.

    • Anonymous

Oh, yeah.  I’m normally not on board with the Shelley-O love, but this time, wow.  This dress is exactly perfect for her.  And the President doesn’t look too shabby either!

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3CGY36NG25QFIZQOLMH7SQTKLU andrew

Okay, once again, I don’t get it– the gushing over Michelle’s outfit, I
mean.  “Knocked it out of the park”? I would respectfully disagree. Love the gloves and the little bag and the earrings.  She should
wear opera gloves more often– gives her a chance to show off her upper
arms as she is wont to do but still looks formal and covered up.  But
the dress?  Nope.  The little bow on the front is all wrong.  The bodice
looks lopsided or something to me– okay, I’m not good with proper
descriptions of clothing, but the part that comes up in the center is
not centered, but off to one side just a tiny bit. One boob looks higher
than the other as a result. The unrelievedly white dress to me reads as
      very prom/wedding basic snore.

      As to her companions– love
the queen’s tiara but hate that she gets stuck with those strange sashes
at these sorts of events.  Gives her a bit of a “Mrs. Nursing Home
Runner-Up” look.  But the two ladies did seem to coordinate their colors
and look good together in the pictures.  The queen’s jewelry is very
nice, and it’s smart of Michelle not to try to compete in that
department with a woman with the jewelry collection Elizabeth owns.

      The
men clean up very well!  Even though Philip is also stuck with a sash,
he looks great for his age in his tux.  And the prez’s tux looks
terrific, although the pants seem a little baggy below the knee.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=37101778 Katy Pilley

FYI they have to wear the sashes. It’s what royalty does on formal occasions. And the pagent winners wear sashes to emulate royalty. Not the other way around

    • Anonymous

      Stuh-NING!  She looks absolutely divine.

    • Sara__B

Except for the wan little bow, I love it! Oh, and the gloves are pulled up too hard — according to my mother, a glove expert, they need  more “wrinkles” to look their best. (I suspect gloves are required at a formal dinner with the Queen, and Mrs. O’s glove look of highest quality, perfectly fitted.)

    • Anonymous

      “O” so stunning, indeed!

      Cheers.

    • Anonymous

You’re right.  But I would remove the bow.

    • Anonymous

I love how Shelley and Betty read the same memo to wear white and carry sparlky silver bags. On her dress, I like it better in the long shots than close up. She kind of looks uncomfortable in it, like it’s wrapping and binding her torso, though you’d never know it from looking at her. But her overall look is fabulous. And I think POTUS looks incredible in a tux. And just look at that smile (:)

    • http://diaryofaconsumerpunchingbag.blogspot.com/ Laura Ann Springer

Okay I have to say that the ribbon bow for the bodice does give her some off kilter boob thing going on. I am happy to say that I do like this however, I think it might have been better in a soft Silver or an Ivory instead of white white…maybe that’s cause if it was me I would TOTALLY spill something red all over it.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sntierney Shannon Tierney

Look closer, the bow results from the wide ribbon which wraps around the waist and the chiffon portions of the bodice. It’s like a toe shoe. I wouldn’t ditch the bow at all – it is a great detail.

I also don’t always feel the Mrs. O love (though I adore that she tries things that are unusual and fashion forward) but when she gets it right, she really gets it right.

To start off with I think Michell looks lovely, except for the little bow… Love the gloves because when can you ever wear them and look just fabulous !
I think we all like Michelle because she is much younger than some of our former First Ladies so fashion is more exciting.

Have have read this blog for many years but rarely comment any more.
There are several commenter that I always read if I have the time…
Sewing Siren is my #1 favorite, love when she talks about why and how things are made, Brooklyn Bomber and Gotham Tomato too…. But I have noticed over the years if you do comment and disagree with TLo or Gotham she can get a little hard.
I feel if you state why you like and don’t like something not snarky about it everyone is good but it can be a thin line to walk.

We all should be able to comment yea or nay ! or like me just read and enjoy what TLo writes about. The Fug Girls too.

And I think The President looks quite Fabulous too !

She looks wonderful – dress is gorgeous and fits her beautifully!  The only tiny little “tweak” I’d make to the dress is to make the waistband a little wider so it eases into the hips and gives her more of an hourglass figure.  Oh, and the bow can go too, LOL.  Other than that, love it.  I wonder how much *more* gorgeous she’d look in a saturated color??  I love when she wears those!

The contrast between the two couple and what they represent, historically, is so compelling. As for the dress, I love how the crossed halter frames her smile.

From a little way off, I think it looks gorgeous. Up close, there seems to be a bit of a titscrepancy, but that’s a minor nitpick of a great look.

I don’t love the dress (with the bow-haters) but it’s dead on for the occasion and she looks great.

The Mr. is the real stunner, I think. He looks awesome.

oy t-lo i hate disagreeing with you but im not feeling this one. the waiste is far too high – it looks like she cant breathe! the only thing i like about it is the halter neckline… other than that i cant say she looks all that great. the gloves just throw me off completely!!  im not crazy about the earrings either… classic pearls would have been nicer i think. sorry!!!

Shelly O looks gorgeous.  Mr. O looks like he knows what a very lucky man he is.

Hey guys, when we saw this on the news this morning, my husband said “wonder what T&L will say?”

Like the dress, could do without the bow (and maybe the gloves), but she does look great!

I’m still not keen on her perpetual choice of high waisted dresses, and the little bow is annoying. But the dress is WOW otherwise, her hair is fabulous and the gloves look just right to me. So I call this a triple, not a home run.

      She looks perfect.

My mom could not stop talking about this whole look when she saw the photos. Called me at work to tell me how amazing the First Lady looked at Buckingham. Mom remembers Jackie Kennedy in the White House, so I think she’s enjoying having someone with a sense of style as First Lady again.

Shelly looks amazing here. I have to wonder, though, if someone in the East Wing didn’t call someone at the palace to see if they couldn’t coordinate looks, because she and Betts look like a match set.

The gown is really nice and elegant. Absolutely love it on her.

You think this looks good!  Check her out in Ralph Lauren.

THANK-YOU for the link for the Ralph Lauren photo. She looks breathtakingly elegant in that dress with the dramatic hairstyle. So very proud to have her and the President representing us overseas. Feels good to have a president who is intelligent, educated and articulate and a very stunning and equally educated, intelligent and articulate First Lady. Wow. Taking it in…….

SOMEONE needed to pull off the abdomen bow, though.  that looks rediculous

Love it, love her, love that the Queen still has her handbag.

    • Margot Brose

She looks like what she is: our all-American princess! J’adore! I wish she would stop using so much product in her hair though. She has a bit of a long face (a very pretty one, don’t get me wrong) and having her hair all stiff like that like she often does is extremely unflattering, which is too bad, because a softer, natural ‘do would have made this the most perfect look EVER.

    • Lauren Maier

Yes, Shelley O looks stunning, but has anyone commented/noticed how adorable the Queen looks??  :D

    • elzatelzabelz

Really? I don’t agree at all. I think the neckline is lovely on her and a shape she should wear more often. But, the stupid little twee bow on her waist? Ugh. Terrible. It’s like she’s TRYING to dress like a 1960s caricature. The colors is fine-but I think a more dramatic or rich color would have worked much better. I give it a meh, if that.

Loved-loved-loved it, but what she wore at the U.S. Ambassador’s dinner was even better.  She looks like a modern-day Sargent painting.

Michelle looks great in that Ralph Lauren dress. I am not sure about the necklace, bracelet and blue turquoise ring. She needs to lose one or two of those items. However this is a perfect dress for her.

What I most appreciate these gala events is that the President always looks so incredibly amazed and delighted that she’s his date.  Obama knows he’s one Lucky Bastard – and the Presidency has nothing to do with it.

shouldn’t barack have been more buttoned up?

Help her, she does not know what she is doing.

Too bad she didn’t wear this for the inaugural ball.

    • Patricia Biswanger

can’t say it better than PeaceBang:  “Oh, yikes. Hate it.”

This may be the only time that I give a dress with a bow an A+. Love it. Love her.

I may not agree with the Obamas politically, but there is absolutely no denying their beauty and charm, imo.

I think she looks very ‘different’ in this amazing outfit, an original.
I love the black one that she wore the next night, even better, gads: that one took my breath away, <3 the necklace and bracelet with that material and neckline!!
But the white one is awesome, too!
