Michelle Obama and the Royals

Posted on May 24, 2011

Shelley O met up with Betty, Cammie, and Cathy, and the gals all had a laugh together. Let’s decide whether we approve of their clothes, shall we?

Barbara Tfank Resort 2011 Collection/Model: Edythe Hughes

It’s a very pretty dress. A bit too self-consciously retro, though. It could have come right out of the Mad Men wardrobe. We think the skirt’s too full, but that’s what our gal likes. Love the shoes.

Betty looks cute in her print. We wonder how many dinner rolls she stuffed into her ever-present purse.

We always feel a little bad for Cammie at these things because she quite obviously isn’t built for the pomp and pageantry. She always looks like she’d rather be riding a horse. Still, the suit looks good on her. We like the detailing on the jacket. The hat was completely too much, though. And the matching gloves and purse is uber-twee.

The Duchess of Cambridge is wearing a bandage dress by Reiss.

Cathy”s dress looks pretty and modern next to Shelley’s Peggy Olson drag. We don’t think Shelley’s bolero jacket adds anything to the look. It instantly bulks her up.

Okay, we make it a point not to get into body snarking here, but we’re sorry; that’s a young lady in need of an intervention. She is entirely too thin and for the first time in her public life, she doesn’t look healthy. When a woman is standing with her feet together and you could pass a copy of War and Peace between her legs without touching them, that’s a problem.

Shelly’s dress looks like upholstery to me, I’m not fan.

  • Anonymous

she is starting to look like Celine Dion, take that as you may

    • http://twitter.com/Megan_Burgess Megan

      Wow, she actually does.

  • http://twitter.com/twcarey Theresa Carey

Well, I guess those rumors about Kate being pregnant already are untrue.  I do wish she looked healthier.  I worry about women with BMIs around 14.

I’m not a fan of bolero jackets in general, but the way this one sticks out all over does make her look heavier on top.  I don’t think it’s protocol to be sleeveless in the Queen’s company, but there are other alternatives.  Agree about the shoes — cute!!

Billy looks good with a post-honeymoon tan – but I hate his suit.  His dad wears the same retro/ugly style.

And I have to agree, Cathy’s elbow is serving some serious Skeletor.  She could probably carry another 5-10 lbs and still be a knockout.

    • Anonymous

      No probably about it.

    • Anonymous

Five to ten?  She could carry a good twenty more pounds and be a complete knockout.

You’ve missed Michelle Obama in Ireland. She had a fantastic skinny jewelled belt and I was waiting for you to tell me where it was from!

Like the dress, not amazing but cute.  Hate the bolero. It’s the sort of piece a fashion student makes at the last minute to bulk up a collection or a dressmaker sews up out of scraps when she finds out the bridesmaids have to have shoulders covered at the wedding. But I feel about boleros the same way you feel about Marchesa so none will ever please me.

Kate looks great as always, maybe too slim but I hate to comment on weight either way.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_XVMVVOISLIR7V6NZ5C6GRDQZAA Joseph

I agree with you on just about everything.  Style aside – it’s interesting how the last pictures show how Obama and William are copying one another and being strong whereas their spouses are seemingly being very casual and relate to one another.  Reminds me of things we talked about in my Gender and Communication classes.

    • Jason Kramer

Yes–The shot of them both guarding their crotches made me giggle.

I do like the splash of color that the bolero adds — compared to the royals, Shelly looks positively vibrant.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

Shelly’s pink jacket is just not doing it for me.  I love the dress, hate the shoes…they look too small in the width.  Camillia’s shoes are the wrong color, but the royals are always matchy matchy with color, so the rest of the outfit is working.

I knew you would be posting on this today!  Thanks for being so quick!

I am hoping that since the wedding is over Kate can relax and gain a few pounds.  Or maybe she’ll quickly get pregnant and will gain some healthy baby weight.

It always makes me laugh when the Queen carries a purse – what does she need a purse for??!!

    • Anonymous

      dinner rolls

    • chase0820

I read somewhere that she uses it as a signal.  If she wants to get away from someone she pushes it down towards her wrist, and her people invent an excuse to get her away from the irritating conversation.

Hey if anything it’s Michelle the one lacking here, all the royal females are carrying purses!

It’s hard to compare the 4 of them because they are so far appart in age and station in life.
The Queen looks as she always does. Appropriate.
Cams hat is cray-cray. Othewise she looks fine.
Catherine looks very modern and elegant.   But I fear if Michelle had worn that dress she would have been taken to task for being too
    casual.
I like Michelle in full skirts. And I think the bolero has the opposite effect of bulking up, the sleeve is very narrow and the cut in the back emphasizes the small of her back, which is very pretty.
The fabric looks a bit “late day”, I don’t know what time of day it was or what the event was either. Over all I like the look.

Shelly’s dress is a perfect choice to visit the Queen. I have to finally agree that Cathy may need to start visiting her local chippy on a regular basis (though I still think she looks fabulous). But poor Wills: With the way he us standing and holding himself, he looks like the Windsor genes have finally taken over.

All the English ladies here have purses. Maybe they stash a handgun in them.

    • Anonymous

Betty uses her handbag as a way to signal her aids. She starts out with the handbag on her left arm, and when she shifts it to her right arm her aids know she’s had enough and it’s time to usher the guests out.

I think it’s adorable that Ms. Obama chose a dress in the style of Queen E.’s heyday. Not that I think Princess and too-soon Queen E. ever got a heyday  as  say, Ms. Pippa Middleton would understand the term.

And I like Ms. O’s dress, though I do wish her little bolero were not pink. It dumbs down the ensemble to junior’s dept.

That is a stunningly flattering suit on Camilla. To my eyes the hat is too much, but I’m a Yank, what do I know from hats?  I also really like what I can glimpse of her necklace. (And yes, I’m pretty sure she WOULD much rather be on a horse.)

Chuckled at the first couple of group shots indoors , apparently unless one is gesturing, protocol dictates hands clasped to protect the genitals when heads of state meet.

  • MilaXX

Love Shelly’s shoes and agree the skirt is a bit too full. Flat out hate the bolero jacket, but I’m not a fan of bolero jackets in general. Kate’s dress feels a bit too casual to me. Perhaps it’s the color, but it looks like a khaki dress I would wear to run errands in. I agree she looks scary thin. I’m still hoping she’ll allow herself to put back on a few pounds now that the wedding is over.

    • Anonymous

MilaXX should you ever move into my neighborhood you will immediately and single-handedly raise the tone. That anyone not on the way to/from work nor under 25 and in a sundress would wear a dress to run an errand!  We are one vast sea of jeans and baggy shorts, here. The more upscale householders do sport yoga pants, occasionally.

      • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

Oh, you must live in my former hometown!  I didn’t even get to see a pair of trousers on anyone not working until I moved away… which may explain my fascination with dresses now:)

  • Anonymous

Mrs. Obama’s dress is too short and too full.  And I think it’s time to retire the little jacket, in whatever form it takes.

  • http://twitter.com/bentley1530 F E B

What is with the royals and their purses?  Don’t they have people to hold their stuff?

  • Anonymous

I think the bolero would look great with a sleeker dress underneath, but it’s a little too Mamie Eisenhower as-is. As I was looking at these photos I was hoping you’d do some Michelle-caps – “Girl, you are starting to look like your late mother-in-law. Let me give you my recipe for…” or words to that effect.

  • Anonymous

I love that dress so much for the fabric that I can forgive the terrible bolero. Shoes are also killah.

Agreed on the Duchess. I loved her wedding dress, and she did look radiantly happy, but in close up her face looked thin and sunken. Not at all healthy. That just seems to be getting worse.

  • Anonymous

I like the Tfank (?) on the model , but it looks decidely cheaper on Shelly O.  ANd the stiff full skirt is not flattering – I guess that is to match how unflattering that the shrug is.

The Queen and Camilla are both in their standard looks.     (not sure what is going to show up, as the lower text is not visible)

Kate’s is loverly but she  make one worry about her health.

  • Patty Poulter

” We wonder how many dinner rolls she stuffed into her ever-present purse.” OMG – that is exactly what I thought, because my grandma did the same thing all the time.  Of course, she also took her coffee cup (wiped clean with a napkin) AND the salt and pepper shakers. We could never convince her that they were not hers for the taking. Lord, I miss her!

    • Anonymous

My grandma is like that.  If she likes the plate her dinner is served on, it’s going home with her.

  • scottyf

On yet another note, I think Duke Willie and Pres Bar might have a little bit of a bro-mance going on.

    • Anonymous

It does look in that one shot as if our President has completely cracked up the [eventual] heir to the throne.

  • Anonymous

I love the pic where it looks like Obama just told William a dirty joke. Michelle’s dress is a little bridesmaid for me, and I’m not digging the bolero. The Queen looks like she is wearing Koret. I agree about Kate, but I do like her dress. She has the right coloring for that kind of neutral, unlike Camilla.

  • Anonymous

BTW, does anyone here know if there’s a good shot of Ms. O’s brooch floating about online anywhere?

  • Saoirse Lee

Kate plays with her hair entirely too much. No review of Shelley’s clothes in Ireland yesterday?

    • Anonymous

She is young and probably still nervous around all those big-wigs.  It will go away with a little more age and confidence

      • Anonymous

She is not that young, like Diana was. Diana was a lot more polished at this age, although Kate is polished also.

        • Anonymous

Diana grew up the daughter of an earl and spent time with the royal family her whole life. By the time she was Kate’s age she’d been married to Chuckles for 10 years.
Kate’s a nice middle class girl from the country. It’s all still a bit much for her.

  • aussiegal77

Lovely and civilised.  I love the ladies’ outfits – wonder how the convo went after a few drinks?  heh

  • Anonymous

This is one of the few times I have not liked Mrs. Obama’s outfit.  I don’t think it flatters her body type and I don’t like the little jacket.  Hell, I don’t even like the shoes.  She is still my fashion idol, though, and I am expecting something fabulous next time.  You go, Shelley.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3JSTXMWWVZN2QNP2UEKJMTWD7U Isabel

In the second to last pic, I thought that Keira Knightly had snagged an invite! Duchess K looked like Keira in that moment.

    • Anonymous

You totally nailed that! I was thinking the same thing!

    • Ella B. Mudge

Yes!  I was going to say the same thing… the resemblance is rather shocking!

  • Anonymous

Lord, Until the wedding I didn’t realize how TINY the queen is! I too love the fabric of the FLOTUS dress, so glad she did something different with the sash/belt, the jacket was alright until I saw it in profile and saw it was layered. The skirt on the dress didn’t look too full when she was walking, only when she was standing.
Camilla, yes, she does always look out of place, doesn’t she? And the new duchess–please, lets not go there with her weight, please, please! She has had busy month, lets just give her a little rest.

  • Anonymous

Kate’s body language seems to say she does not like the FLOTUS. Or that she is super nervous.  You’d think “what to do with your hands” is a big part of the public speaking education she must have had by now.

  • Halley George

I think Shelly looks really good and I think the look is retro but modern. I like. I am a skinny girl so as a rule never get in on the “give that girl a sandwich train” but Katie, you really do! Still gorgeous, though. Camillas hat – ugh.

  • Beth G

I really hope Kate finds the snack aisle at the grocery store – she doesn’t look healthy.  Hopefully the stress of the wedding and such can go away now and she can go back to the healthy glow she had before.

Shelly’s dress is pretty, the bolero throws it off – it looks like an after thought.

    Betty looks AWESOME.

Can we talk about how well Billy’s suit fits? It’s bespoke, I’m sure so of course it’s going to fit him perfectly, but the high-stance jacket and narrow trousers make Barry look schlubby in comparison. I’ve always thought Barry’s suits tend to the too-baggy. He would look so fab if his suit were more fitted and his jacket were a little shorter.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RK5MAF2VNT32ULNYFIXDANTEC4 Terence

Considering the emotional, social, environmental transition Kate’s in right now, I’m not too worried.  If I went through a high profile wedding and lived with and was now considered a royal, I’d probably drop 10 pounds without even trying.  I’m sure once she gets more comfortable and relaxed, she’ll gain it back.

  • Anonymous

Speaking of standing with her legs together, our First Lady needs to learn. She stands like a construction worker.

Her dress: The skirt is a little too full, but overall I like the dress for her. I wish she had worn it without that bolero to show off her killer arms.

I kind of love the Queen’s outfit. She looks so fresh and springtimey, if that’s a word.

Agreed on Camilla, but I love the hat. So British. I always look forward to seeing the gigantic hats these people perch on their heads. Awesome!

    • Anonymous

Points to her for not slouching around all those tiny people, though.

  • Margot Brose

I think that dress is gorgeous, but it’s not really flattering on her. It completely flattens her chest and makes her bottom half look heavy :’( and it’s not that well accessorized. The pink jacket is just… tooo muuuuch. Too bad, Shelley can usually dress quite nicely.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3CGY36NG25QFIZQOLMH7SQTKLU andrew

Camilla– love the hat. Hate the skirt, which in one shot looks like shorts.

Elizabeth– looks adorable.  Love that royal lady!

Katherine– looks gorgeous.  She’s got that indefinable it.  But you are right, she needs to eat.  She should tuck in to a nice tea each afternoon and go heavy on the scones and clotted cream. Yum.

Michelle– hate the outfit.  hate the shiny material.  hate the fullness of the skirt. hate the bolero jacket. Its ugly in general, but the way it billows in the back is just awful.  Love the shoes.

William– looks amazing.  See, his pants are just the right length.  Looks like the honeymoon agreed with the man.

  • Amanda in Austin

Let’s send Katherine some milkshakes and cheeseburgers. Poor thing is wilting from the stress of being a royal. I do hope she’s ok. Honestly. I can see her headed down an unhealthy path.

  • Anonymous

The Duchess is way to thin…stop it now. The Prince is also thinned down, maybe its the British water. All the women dressed as per ususual, clean and crisp,it Shelly had to cover her shoulders , maybe a different dress would be the way to go. But, I do like the bolero if it was a different color or even pattern.

  • http://twitter.com/ShelfAfterlife Shelf Afterlife

I always love it whenever I see a picture of William with his head tilted down and smiling.  He looks so much like Diana.  He doesn’t look like he’s full of butterflies like he did at his wedding, but who could blame him ;)

  • Anonymous

The President’s pants are too long.  The Windsor men could recommend a tailor to him.

Camilla looks really good in that suit.
Michelle looks fine but the jacket looks awkward in the back.  I like her shoes, a lot.
Catherine looks nervous as heck, the color does nothing for her.

    The Queen looks perfect.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=513945580 Megan Patterson

YES. I am totally of the opinion that if a woman’s thighs don’t touch a little, it’s really, really creepy and gross.
EAT A SANDWICH GIRL, THE WEDDING IS OVER. Not that sheneeded to diet for that either though.

  • Anonymous

Considering how fashion-challenged Camilla can be, I think she looks good here. I even kind of love the hat.

I really like the dress our awesome First Lady is wearing, but I agree that it’s too full. That’s a great length though, and notice she had the sense to dump the bow at the waist. The shoes are killer. The less said about the bolero, the better.

I suspect the Queen has both a gun and a knife in that purse. Also, change for the meter.

  • Gail Kwak

Yes, Shelley has made better choices, but I still think she looks great!  Kate had best enjoy that skinny body while she has it.  I’m sure she will be pregnant by the end of the year if not sooner.  And Camilla.  I love that old broad.  She hung in there until she got what she wanted even though it took a lifetime.

  • Anonymous

I think Kate looks fabulous in that dress! I think that she will probably put on a few of the pounds back. I think that she only lost the weight because of wedding stress which is perfectly normal. Afterwards, newlyweds usually bounce right back to health.

  • Patricia Biswanger

I think Shelly’s dress looks almost like it should look:  conservative but spirited.

But the pink bolero does look like an afterthought — “Oh!  I guess I shouldn’t go sleeveless to Buckingham Palace, even if I do have great arms.  Let me just grab the first pastel thing I see.”

She seems to have this need to show off her arms, even when it’s totally inappropriate, i.e., wearing a sleeveless dress to Obama’s first speech to Congress, in January, for crying out loud.  And she really needs to do something about those eyebrows.

  • Diana Martinez

Haaaate that jacket on the First Lady.  HAAAATE.  Dress is “eh.”

  • Alison Campbell

What’s in the Queen’s handbag? Well she’s a old lady – hankie, spare teeth, pack of mints/butterscotch,Yardley creme puff compact, pen for the crossword when she’s stuck in the car and fed up listening to Phillip, and probably a few betting slips :D

She’s been looking well lately and cheerier than before. It’s either relief at the wedding finally happening or she’s getting a bit wandered. Interview on our TV tonight with Phil to mark his 90th! Might be entertaining if he’s as politically incorrect as he normally is.

Anyway, the clothes. Queen fresh and springlike, and no hat so I don’t know what Camilla was thinking as she looks like she has her spare wedding outfit on! Although her and Michelle seem deep in conversation. Kate – modern and businesslike. She maybe could’ve been a bit brighter. Michelle, sorry but she looks like she’s going to a kids birthday party. Too full and short, and too high on her waist. I know she’s tall and a lot of her dresses hit too high on her waist, but it’s accentuated by those full skirts she seems to like. She looks far better in a straight dress or something that visually drops her waist and balances her proportions. And the bolero…?!

William really should take the clippers to that hair now the wedding is by!

  • Patricia Biswanger

Cathy does look self-conscious and nervous, maybe because of the cameras, maybe because Shelly is boring her, maybe because she’s hungry?

Wills and the President, on the other hand, look like they are really hitting it off.  Probably talking sports, which men can always do when they don’t know each other.

  • Anonymous

Terrific images! Love how Obama is cracking Will’s shit up. What on earth could he have said to him? I do so love this dress on Shelley, but the length and bolero are problematic to the entire look. Cathy’s dress is lovely and modern, but you’re right, girl needs a hearty helping of bangers and mash.

  • Amber Garvey

WHY are those interior photos so bad! I could shoot better photos in my sleep! Awkward angles, flash reflecting in the mirrors. Gawd! William & Catherine look like wax figures of themselves.

Quite frankly, I don’t think she’s any thinner than Giuliana Rancic.

    • Anonymous

I think she’s got at least 5 pounds on Giuliana. Who reminds me of the high school friend who died of her anorexia, eventually. (Now, for all I know, Ms. Rancic’s genetically that thin and 100% healthy. Just saying what crosses my mind every time I see her.)

Ho Kay, so we’re talking about the leaders of nations here.  None, and I mean none of them has any excuse for looking less than perfectly turned out.  Betty.  I LOVE you.  You look 10 years younger in that dress, but that bag, which you clearly carry as a holdover from other days, has got to go.  Shelly, now really girl, don’t you have a nice talented homosexual to pull things off of you at the last minute saying, “Oh NO you don’t”?  I’ll gladly accept the post when offered.  The bolero is wrong in every respect, wrong length sleeves, wrong color and in profile it makes you look hunchbacked. Barack, please don’t tell me no one in Washington can hem a pair of pants for you.  You’re the effing PREZ.    Two things Cami, One, lose the hat, forever.  Two, get someone to update that hair so its a bit less like Crystal Carrington.  But I love your suit, like, a LOT.  Cathy, I love the dress, truly.  It could be a skosh better fitted in the back, but other than that, rockin’.  Wils, What can I say?  You look perfect in every detail. Why didn’t you marry me instead?  Oh right, you’re not gay. Damn.  Oh and lastly, Phil, don’t let anyone tell you you can’t bring it when you want to.  You look terrific.  Perfect tailoring and the color of your tie is just youthful enough to give it all some snap.

  • http://profiles.google.com/gillianholroyd gillian holroyd

*Love* the look but then I’m a mid-century fan.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

I would have liked Mrs. Obama’s dress better without the bolero and would have added the pretty color on the belt. Kate’s dress is pretty, but too casual. Camilla is Camilla, and HRH rules.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1045295912 Charles Purdy

I like Shelley O’s dress sense usually, but is that just like an inch too short on her? It feels like it’s hitting her just a bit high. Kate is definitely too thin.

  • http://profiles.google.com/grandiva1968 e jerry powell

I still can’t get over how short the queen is…

Positives acknowledged, but the pattern on FLOTUS’S dress looks like wallpaper.  I wish she would get over her need for contrasting cardigans and show off those awesome arms.

I think they all look fantastic. Kate is very thin but her face still looks beautiful.

  • Joyce VG

Yes, I was instantly concerned for Princess Catherine over her weight, or lack of it.  No baby rumors for them yet.  I like what Michelle has on but it is a bit youngish. I wonder if Prince William will ever wear another color of suit.

  • http://twitter.com/laughincryin laughincryin

Kate looks fantastic. Hate the weight talk. For those paying attention, she’s heavier than she was at the wedding and her legs have never touched, even with 20 more pounds. I always love Michelle’s color choices and her risk-taking no matter what she wears. It doesn’t always flatter her, but she still always looks great. Personality means something.

I’m with you . . . I’m thrilled we have a First Lady with some panache!  (And I don’t think the bolero makes her look bulky, and I don’t think it clashes … and as for the Peggy O. skirt (aw c’mon, T Lo), I think she’s just doing one of her standard versions of dressy (see also fabric) + springtime + England + royal family.  Maybe I’m especially out to defend her after reading so much snot about Michelle in the British press.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sntierney Shannon Tierney

Agreed. She doesn’t look unhealthy. She’s a thin girl.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Kelsey-Albrecht/100001647200441 Kelsey Albrecht

Totally agree. She’s a naturally thin girl who looks healthy. People need to stop acting like that if she’s not stuffed like a Christmas ham, she’s going to be two steps away from Karen Carpenter-ing on us. It’s rude, and it’s not true.

I think Shelly showed up and was informed that shoulders must be covered.  The jacket happened to be packed.

And in pic 3rd-from-the-bottom, Obama just told Prince Charming his first dirty married joke.

Shelley needs to stay away from the shrugs. Along with her penchant for high waisted skirts, they shorten her torso dreadfully.
And you’re right about Katie, give the girl a sandwich — with extra cheese.
BTW — the proper British snark name for HM is Brenda, not Betty.

The queen is old enough to wear this print (see photo 3) but not our FLOTUS

So, is the princess now required to carry a purse for no apparent reason as a part of her training to be queen?  She looks silly holding a clutch in their own house.

I LOVE Michelle’s outfit. It seems completely appropriate to the occasion.

I think Kate’s health decline may be because of the world she is thrown in. Then again, she had nine years to prepare, but it is most definitely a stressful environment to get into.  I hope that she becomes more comfortable, which will hopefully let her gain more weight. Love her dress here, though. Shelly’s looks bad. You know, Shelly is known as a fashion icon, but I prefer how Camilla looks- that’s saying something. The Queen looks cute. She is really small compared to everyone else’s height.

Love her dress here, though. Shelly’s looks bad. You know, Shelly is known as a fashion icon, but I prefer how Camilla looks- that’s saying something. The Queen looks cute. She is really small compared to everyone else’s height.

I’m giving her a pass. Can you even FATHOM how much stress she is under with the wedding, the honeymoon, and now this meeting? She’ll have to get used to it, of course.. but I’m sure eating is down on her list, even if she can stomach it. I think they all look great! :)

From a distance Shelly O’s dress is pretty (w/o the bolero, of course), but up close?  Yikes!  How heavy is that material?  And I HATE the shoes.

Honestly Camilla shouldn’t even TRY.  She looks uncomfortable and it shows.

QEII looks the best, even with her granny dress.  Way more springy than any of the other three.

The dress makes Mrs. Obama’s hips huge. I love the Queen she can do no wrong in my eyes. Camilla…just stop. Prince Phillip very dashing at 90…yeah suck it bitches he is 90 and still looks good. Finally Catherine…I like this dress because well she can pull it off.

Ideally, I *like* what the FLOTUS has on, it’s pretty, but I don’t think she needed to go quite so Donna Reed here.

WOW, is Kate way too thin!  Hopefully when things calm down in their lives, she can put a little more meat on her bones.  Still a gorgeous girl, but just to skinny.

    These photos beg for dialogue!!

Keeping their hands clasped in front of them reminds them that they are not to touch the queen — remember the FLOTUS’ faux pas the last time?

I think Kate’s dress is AMAZING. Gorgeous, classic, flattering-perfection. Ms. Obama’s dress looks entirely twee in comparison. I LOVE a retro silhouette, but…not on her…and not here. A tailored sheath with a lovely jacket or great accessories would have been much better.

why weren’t they invited to the wedding?

    • akprincess72

It wasn’t a state wedding, he isn’t a currently ruling royal.   We have similar protocols for state & non-state dinners at the White House.

My favorites?  HM & Prince Philip, they look adorable & appropriate!

You are right about the Duchess. We’re done dieting for ‘the event’ – let’s get back to normal now.
    But nice dress.
Shelley needs to be wearing something like what she wore to the State of the Union. I want my first lady chic. I want her to lord over the Duchess and show her what chic really looks like.
I do not want her in a pink bolero. I love her so much and usually like her choices but I have to – oh my – probaby for the first time – give her an all-out OUT. Yucka.

I’m going to defend Kate here…some young women are just naturally thin.  She looks healthy and fine.

I was with you on this post until the very end—uh, weight is not a real indicator of health? Don’t do the body police thing, TLo, please. :C

Just because she isn’t fat…  doesn’t mean she isn’t healthy.

I am so glad you mentioned that about Kate.  I saw her and was terrified for her!  She is all points & angles & needs FOOD.

HRM Elizabeth isn’t known as Betty, but Brenda.

Both Kate and Michelle look fantastic. I can nitpick them both a bit, but they both have a great approach to dressing and I enjoy watching them – plus neither really asked for the spotlight, they just met a good guy they fell in love with – so I’m not going to.

Camilla looks beautiful! Mooch looks like a high school prom organizer, cheap and
    Unsophisticated.
