Katy Perry for Vanity Fair Magazine

Posted on May 09, 2011

Tits McHonkerboobs displayed her secondary sexual characteristics to an eager audience of millions of Vanity Fair readers. Because muppets weren’t enough for her.

Vanity Fair June 2011 Issue
Editorial: “Katy Perry’s Grand Tour”
Photographer: Annie Liebowitz
Stylist: Jessie Diehl

“My career is like an artichoke. People might think that the leaves are tasty and buttered up and delicious, and they don’t even know that there’s something magical hidden at the base of it. There’s a whole other side [of me] that people didn’t know existed.”

*needlescratch*

Uh…what?

Nevermind then. Do go on.

“I think sometimes when children grow up, their parents grow up. Mine grew up with me. We coexist. I don’t try to change them anymore, and I don’t think they try to change me. We agree to disagree. They’re excited about [my success]. They’re happy that things are going well for their three children and that they’re not on drugs. Or in prison.”

“The press is just not your friend when it comes to a marriage. That’s why we didn’t sell the pictures of our wedding, and we got offered millions of dollars for them, millions.”

“If the core, the honesty, my story, isn’t working, then all those bells and whistles aren’t going to work, either. Sometimes I can be distracted by the glamour and the fabulousness. But my husband always reminds me to keep the core intact…. I just think I have to appreciate every day, every opportunity, work hard, and continue to evolve as an artist. I already know my future evolution, where I’m going to go. I mean, I’m touring in fucking Indonesia, for crying out loud.”

We know it’s internet-fashionable to internet-hate her, but she never bothered us. She always seemed like fun. At the very least, she doesn’t seem insufferable and you can’t say that about 90% of celebrities and about 99% of pop stars. Let’s look at pictures.

Christian Dior Spring 2011 Couture Collection/Model: Georgina Stojilkovic (WOMEN)

Christian Dior Spring 2011 Couture Collection/Model: Lindsey Wixson (MARILYN)

Jean Paul Gautier Spring 2011 Couture Collection/Model: Jac (IMG)

Christian Dior Spring 2011 Couture Collection/Model: Olga Sherer (NATHALIE)

She’s no model. She’s a little too stiff and self-conscious on-camera (which is actually kind of endearing). The reason this editorial works for us is because she’s got the looks for these gorgeous clothes and she photographs really well. She looks fabulous in all the Dior but we’re not as enthralled with the Gaultier on her.

I don’t hate her either though wasn’t crazy about her first tune but I adore Russell and thinking I’ll have to trust that the wild boy picked a good one for himself!

  • Anonny

    I love the
Gaultier, it reminds me of the house dresses that Lucy Ball would wear on ILL. Always loved that look.

Kinda surprised that this didn’t turn into a skanky shoot.

  • Anonymous

Yep, agreeing with every single thing you said. I saw her on Graham Norton about a year ago, and she seemed like a hoot, completely self-aware and down-to-earth. But I still hate the cover. The cups of a bustier should cover one’s breasts, not just the nipples.

  • Mariah

What bothers me about her is that she’s not an artist. Shes just a decent (not great) singer and a decent (not great) beauty trying to suck up as much of the Gaga-esque trend and ride the fame train as far as it will take her. And the songs they write for her are insipid.

    • Dana

Umm…pretty sure Ms. Perry was doing this wackadoo stuff before Lady Gaga. Maybe not AS wackadoo, but still kinda nuts. Hell, she even beat her to the bicurious anthem! I’m far from a fan, but I can certainly admit that she’s a gorgeous gal who’s team knows how to market her. The songs might be insipid, but that’s just what pop music is.

      • meatwhichdreams

Excuse me, “I Kissed A Girl” is not MY “bicurious anthem.” It’s a coldly calculating play into hetersexual porn fantasies…”I kissed a girl and I liked it/I hope my boyfriend don’t mind it!” TEE HEE. No. She’s said herself she’s not bisexual, and has been pretty rude and dismissive to reporters asking her about her lesbian fans. She doesn’t care.

Just like “Firework” is not a “gay anthem” just because she had some boys kissing in the video. That does not erase the homophobic and bullying lyrics she’s never apologized for or EVEN ACKNOWLEGED AS BAD like “UR so gay and you don’t even kiss boys…you should hang yourself with your H&M scarf.” She’s happy to take the cash of her queer fans and pay lip service to how ostrasized we are but she won’t take responsiblity for the role she’s had and continues to play in our ostrasization.

So that’s why I have a hard time thinking of her as “fun and harmless.” Although she does look quite beautiful here.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RK5MAF2VNT32ULNYFIXDANTEC4 Terence

And Gaga never apologized for calling Asians and Latinos “Orientals” and “Cholas”. What’s your point? And for all of Gaga’s “bisexuality” every major single of hers is a “girl-guy” song. I laughed when her song “The Edge of Glory” opened with “I need a man who thinks it’s right when it’s wrong”. You sure do, honey. Another song and another heteronormative self-reference. She’s playing you with the bisexual crap, just like any other opportunist trying to use the bisexual community as their easy way in to fame and counter-culture.

If you’re a straight allie, then just own up to it. Damn.

And quite frankly, what she “does” with her fame is fine, but it doesn’t erase how contrived and amateurish her lyric writing “talent” is. Any teenage gay boy could have written “Born This Way”…and probably wouldn’t have put up a charade calling it “a song directly sent from God/Alexander MacQueen”. And Judas? Those lyrics are hilariously bad. Judas denying her three times? “Use ear condom next time?” LMAO.

        • Allie

This, exactly. As a queer woman I really can’t stand Perry.

    • http://profiles.google.com/shannonlstewart Shannon Stewart

I don’t see her as Gaga-esque at all… She always seems to be doing vaguely ridiculous things because they’re fun (Same reason I once spelled words with plastic forks in people’s yards; being silly is fun). Gaga, on the other hand, is a pretentious twit whose entire life is essentially a piece of performance art, with the only purpose of it being to impress upon people how deep she is…

      • Mariah

At least Gaga is doing something positive with her fame and writing (her own) empowering songs rather than promoting herself as only a sexual object ala I Kissed a Girl, California Girls. Sorry if I don’t like people whose fame is completely undeserved and have their “marketing team” rather than talent to thank.

        • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_RK5MAF2VNT32ULNYFIXDANTEC4 Terence

Empowering for white gay guys, apparently. Thanks GaGa, but I already knew I was born Asian. I don’t need to be encouraged to “love myself more today” because I’m Asian. I need other people to own up to using outdated offensive terms and to stop being racist. I think People of Color Organize put it best:

“9) Self-Esteem Negates All Racism…I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve been white-cited that I just shouldn’t care what others think and I should feel good about me regardless. Because feeling good about myself is all that matters. It’s not unlike the other lecture I get too often. I should just stop fretting over racism and just live my life. Because clearly I can take a day off from bigotry and racism whenever I feel like it. Basically setting up the fallacious argument that racism is the resultant of low self-esteem or having a chip on your shoulder….Good self-esteem is not going to stop a bank from denying me a business loan because the bank rep has a grudge against black people. Good self-esteem isn’t going to Arabs and Muslims from being unjustly attacked by hateful racist mobs. Good self-esteem isn’t going to protect blacks and Latinos from being racially profiled and brutally assaulted by crooked cops.”http://www.peopleofcolororganize.com/opinion/10-conversations-racism-im-sick-having-white-people/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+PeopleOfColorOrganize+%28People+Of+Color+Organize%21%29But thanks anyway for your “love yourself more today” message when you’re asked about prejudice, Ms. Germanotta.

  • jzzy55

She wears the clothes well and her face/hair are just right with these vintage style clothes. As for her modeling abilities and singing, I know little and care less.

  • MilaXX

I like the Gautier on her. The editorial is not bad, the settings are gorgeous and she’s not bad to look at either. As for the interview, other than the stupid artichoke comment, she sounds fairly human and decent.

  • Chaka

I luh-huve her in the Gaultier! Almost as much as I love that last Dior gown – that’s a dress to sell your children for, I swear.

    • jessamyn

Yes, it’s amazing that even though the red Dior dress is so complex, there is no angle from which I do not love it. Usually the very involved designs are best from the front – they’re designed for runway photos – but of course this collection was shown in that amazing wandering-through-the-atelier style and really seemed to have been designed for three dimensions.

  • Jrob

She looks surprising hot in the cover shot, in a mature way–the good kind of mature. Most of the time she looks like a sexualized child to me. Creepy.

  • Mac

    Attractive… um… dog.

  • Lala

Don’t care about her one way or the other, but I do like this editorial.

  • Carol M

I LOVE that Gaultier dress she wears with the dog. Overall she looks really good.

  • Luminum

I like that she isn’t high on herself. She doesn’t buy in to her own hype, unlike some “artists, such as themselves”. I think she knows where she’s at and what she’s producing and I like that I can take that from her music and that’s all. I don’t have to think about whatever bullshit it or her latest outfit is “supposed to be a statement about.”

  • Anonymous

I rather like the Gaultier on her, and I especially like that she wears the white lace straps pushed down across her upper arms. They look much better there than they do as the model wears them, up around her neck. That hat in the gray & pink Dior photo looks like something that easily could have been worn at the recent royal wedding!

I hope she’s wearing something other than her cover look while she’s touring in Indonesia. It’s supposed to be a very prudish place, even for imported pop divas.

  • Guest

    Her music sucks.

  • Anonymous

The last shot in the Dior is TDF Gorgeous! She seems like a fun gal who doesn’t take herself too seriously and that’s a refreshing change.

  • Anonymous

I’ve never been a fan. She just bugs me. But I think she looks fabulous in these clothes, even the Gaultier. She does have an old fashioned beauty about her.

The Dior pieces are to die for.

  • Margot

The clothes are gorge, but FIRE THAT EFFING STYLIST! I don’t think it’s Katy’s fault that the stylist could only take stuff directly of the runway… she only looks vaguely good in the orange Dior. She’s no model, and the stylist is no gay.

  • SMM

“Katy Perry is the first female artist IN MORE THAN 20 YEARS TO have four No. 1 singles from the same album.”

Absolutely not true! This just goes to show how self-centered and insular the American music industry is.
Mylène Farmer has a better record than that; all 5 singles off of her Point de Suture album hit No. 1!

    • Anonymous

      @f9122151569336a50c1103563e63a54a:disqus
A Mylène Farmer fan! I thought I was the only one (on this side of the “pond” at least). And yes thank you for pointing out the fact that
Mylène Farmer’s record, even if she is not as well known in the US.

  • Megan

She looks good in everything but the cover shot. Hate the way her boobs are falling out.

  • SMM

What bothers me is how unsophisticated she can sound sometimes. I would probably like her more if she just stayed in America, and did not go touring in “fucking Indonesia, for crying out loud”, or elsewhere outside of America.

Hot N Cold, and maybe even Firework, I guess deserved to be hits, but not that awful porno of song called California Gurls!
That song is just awful, I am sorry! That is a real needle-scratch of a moment.

  • Sara L.

Well, I think she looks gorgeous in every shot. I don’t find her particularly stiff looking. Well done, all around.

  • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

She seems fine and fun enough to hang around, if a little young. I like the cover shot (though the top of the bustier should fit better) and the last picture. She knows what works for her, stylistically.

  • renee

    “Tits McHonkerboobs”!!!! bwahhahahaha..

  • Anonymous

I have to ask who would look wonderful in the Gaultier? I just can’t imagine it, though my imagination may be limited.

I also think she looks lovely in all the Diors, but I give a lot of credit to “the team.” I love the amber/gold lighting in the interior shots and her hair and makeup colors stand up to it.

  • http://profiles.google.com/rachelruthlee Rachel Lee

The cover shot makes me think they put it up just because that’s the typical katy perry image- skin baring and daring. even if it is in a neutral colour. I like the clothes inside so much better.

  • Sara__B

The proportions of the Gautier don’t suit Katy’s proportions. Other than that, a pretty girl wearing pretty clothes in pretty places. What’s not to like?

  • PatBiswanger

I like that she turned down millions for her wedding photos. I am so sick of these celebrities who prostitute themselves, their weddings, and their children! So she gains major points with me for that one!

  • Toastedink

I’ve never had a problem with her…. And unlike most pop stars, she can play instruments and write her own music,,,,

She looks great in this shoot

  • tom

I was enjoying these GORGEOUS clothes on her the other day when i got my issue. She’s not a model (like Mark Ruffalo) but she does have the throwback screen siren looks for this sort of editorial, she looks great. And I kind of love the Gaultier outfit. “Over the top” is the new “just right sized”.

  • Anonymous

I can’t believe how charming this is!! I don’t know her music but she’s a lovely girl and doesn’t offend me at all. I’ve really enjoyed her ridiculous, colorful outfits and appearances from the photos I’ve seen. I think she models these clothes quite well and it’s really wonderful to be able to actually SEE the clothes — so often not the case with these celeb spreads. Well played! I also saw a photo of her “Sesame Street” dress and could not imagine what the fuss was all about.

  • Nancy

I think Katy Perry is charming in sort of a raunchy way. She’s actually adorable. But when the force that keeps you grounded is Russell Brand, then your life is probably a little odd.

  • SUS

She’s the Dolly Parton of pop music? Aside from having boobs and singing songs, the similarity ends there.

  • http://profiles.google.com/kbryna kbryna frogboots

I have absolutely no interest in her at all, and don’t quite understand the point of her. The clothes in this editorial are pretty fab, but she doesn’t wear them well at all.

  • http://www.joannao.blogspot.com JoannaOC

Ugh, Kitty Purry makes me ill, and the droopy bustier cover is heinous, but I love the rest of the clothes.

  • Anonymous

I really do love the interior shots and looks, but the cover is ridiculous. Surely they could have found some kind of daring boob revealing colorful non-lingerie item sexy item for the cover a la, as someone aptly noted, Jane Russell. It just seems inconsistent with the rest. I’ve kept a weak eye on this gal over the last couple years. She started out of the gate seeking attention for her high fashion cum character styling. She’s just taken it to another level. Like TLo said, she’s no model but she looks great in picture.

  • Guest

Darlings this is haute couture a lady must bring elegance, class and grace to be able to wear these gowns. Katy Perry has brought brought a sixer or Bartles and James wine coolers.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

She does look a bit stiff and unsure in the photos, but adorable otherwise.

  • Anonymous

She’s not tall enough for the Gaultier gown. Those leggings (or whatever) are not supposed to be that long. She’s not tall enough for the first Dior gown, either, but it looks OK in the photo because she’s hanging off of a carousel horse, so it doesn’t matter that the skirt is longer than her legs. That “fucking Indonesia” comment is annoying and offensive, though. It’s like she’s saying, “Look how exotic I am! Look how worldly and artistic I am, traveling to Asia!”

  • KC

I don’t know if it would work but I think if they shot the Eiffel Tower spread at night it would look so gorgeous

  • http://profiles.google.com/susanvmayer Susan Mayer

    Tits McHonkerboobs! LOLOLOLOL!

@2b8a776e7bfc83ecbf45b0bfeaa96659:disqus said it right, this stylist does not deserve the title. It is not styling to take what has already been styled and replace it on a different model. BOO!
But I do think she looks great.

  • http://profiles.google.com/sauchih Sau-Chih Feng

She really does look amazing, even if she’s not a great model. Her looks are perfect for this old-school glamour shots. I think the picture of her on the carousel is the best!

It’s true the internet seems to hate her, but i think it’s just to seem cool. After all, she has so many #1 singles, she’s doing something right! So I publicly share my love for her songs!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Michelle-Shields/1200782178 Michelle Shields

Tits McHonkerboobs! I almost spit my breakfast cheerios all over my monitor! Great way to start my morning.
Don’t care for her music and she married the ugliest man on this or any other planet. Clothes look great though.

  • Anonymous

I don’t dislike her, but I also don’t buy her music. I always thought she was tacky and fun and obviously proud of her enormous assets. I think she looks really fab in the Gautier.

  • http://profiles.google.com/phyllis.craine Phyllis Craine

She’s so derivative in every way…meh

  • Anonymous

The Dior is stunning on her. The clothes and photographs all work here, she may not be the best model, but everything else is working so well the entire thing comes together perfectly.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1344922354 Eric Scheirer Stott

    The restaurant shot is nice

  • http://twitter.com/foodhussy foodhussy

She’s pretty but annoys the piss out of me but not as much as Russell annoys me. I love the nickname at the beginning…ha!

  • Anonymous

I can’t figure out the difference between her and the one named Zooey. But they are getting their Dita Von Teese on in these shots.

  • http://www.facebook.com/izzzyy Dixie Murphy Ross

her boobs look like Mickey Mouse on the cover. It’s all I can see.

  • Mrsbarnes0202

Feh. Never been impressed with her and all those ” look-at-me” shenanigans. But thanks to TLo, “Tits McHonkerboobs” is now burned in my brain. Bless you, fellas.

  • Puggerpete

I’m not sure what the babble about artichokes was all about but the she looked good in the shots. Not just a blank faced model , something else came through.

  • mimi

    Tits McHonkerboobs…heee heee!

I love the picture where she states she’s too busy for a glass of wine, but is featured lapping up Colette’s Cheri!! Wouldn’t it have been great if it was the yellow and black Cliff notes version or even better yet…Upside Down!!

  • Anonymous

I don’t like the red on her. But I really don’t like this editorial, in terms of the way they dressed her. Those clothes are too straight-off-the-runway. I mean, they kept the weird mask in the first look, the gloves and a different, but identically placed, headpiece in the second look, and the shoes in the Gaultier and maybe the red Dior as well. It’s just really a flat way to present these clothes.

  • Judy_J

She’s a bit too short for the Gaultier, but she does look fabulous in the Dior creations.

  • mjude

i think she is harmless & kinda adorable. also love her in all the clothers

  • missy

I love all the clothes in this shoot but especially J’adore the JPG.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Jessica-TallGirl-Freeman/1043623567 Jessica TallGirl Freeman

I actually think she’s probably a nice person, and I don’t love her music, but I don’t dislike her at all. The Gaultier is my favorite. The cover looks like the undergarments off Mad Men, and is a bit misleading about how lovely the pics are inside.

  • suzq

I love the Gauthier and think the Dior is too long.
Katy is very pretty in that her face makes up gorgeously.

  • suzq

I love the Gauthier but think that the Dior is too long.

Katy is one of those amazing people who can transform her face in make-up. She’s stunning.

  • StL K

Tits McHonkerboobs! ROTFL! I don’t hate her. She’s a fun pop product. But why is she in Vanity Fair? with lead weights on her moneymakers?

  • Anonymous

Gorgeous. I could see her in a retro comedy, like the Bertie Wooster stories.

  • Anonymous

You mean, you didn’t think this interview read as insufferable?

  • http://profiles.google.com/sara.e.munoz Sara Munoz

“There’s even more than meets the eye!” Wha-what-what?!?!?! You mean women have depth? Personality? Non-surface qualities? Shut the front door!
    God damn you Vanity Fair.

  • Anonymous

Ack. I’m one of those with an irrational, inexplicable negative reaction to Perry. Maybe because I have to listen to my 12 yo daughter explaining the “Firework” video to me, scene by scene, and telling me how deep it is. And all I can think is, “A lifetime of Elvis Costello and Clash played in your house, and you think this is deep??!!”

Anyway, I don’t need to like Katy Perry. She loves herself enough for all of us.

She does looks pretty here. Fine. I said it…grudgingly.

  • Amanda in Austin

I like Katy Perry. She has a sense of humor about herself, and her music is fun. And she has an old-school glamour about her that I like.

  • http://twitter.com/margo8461 Marguerite

I don’t hate her, don’t love her, really don’t know her. But the photo of Tits McHonkerboobs (ha-love this) on the cover looks more like the animated Jessica in Who Framed Roger Rabbit than any real woman I know.

  • 10stone

I love everything but the Gautier. The lace leggings aren’t going to do anyone any favors. In fact I’d like it with just about anything else.

Love, love, love the last Dior.

    And Love her husband

  • C.Jean

I guess I just consider her a marketing phenomenon, more than anything–so average in every way. Pretty-ish but actually a little weird looking to me, but she styles well. I like these photos so much more than I thought I would, though–thanks, Annie L! Paris looks wonderful, and KP isn’t spoiling it at all.

The magazine cover, on the other hand…I hate that “about to pop” look of boobs stuck in a garment that’s not big enough. It’s painful and tasteless.

I think it’s fun. The girl is portraying herself as naively delighted by her newfound fame and the novelty of world travel. So, VF shows her doing what every rich naive American used to do: taking an old-fashioned Grand Tour of Paris. It’s like she’s a paper doll starting off in her corset and then they dress her up in haute couture from French designers and plop her down in the most cliched tourist-in-Paris scenes possible. It reads to me like a very pretty extended joke on her daffy “Indonesia” comment.

Besides, she looks good in those clothes.

Tits McHonkerboobs makes me laugh every time I see it. I’ve always liked Katy Perry and find her music annoyingly catchy. She’s kind of hard NOT to like. And I find her really lovely, even mores if she didnt dress in all the absurd get ups. But mostly I’m simply fascinated with her figure and think her breasts are forces of nature. If they’re not hers, bless that plastic surgeon, because they’re fantastic. She looks curvy and old-fashioned, minus a little extra on the hips. I think she looks pretty good in this editorial, not nearly as stiff as as some other actresses.

Huh. Surprised on all the hating really. Pretty much thought she was like all the other pop singers out there. Actually, she is just fun to me. She doesn’t seem to take herself seriously, and I don’t take her seriously. She is just fun to sing along to while dancing or listening to the radio. As for California Girls (or Gurllls or whatever) the video? I thought that was all tongue and cheek, hilarious! What a way to poke fun.

As for the editorial. I hate it. Why? Those are the clothes I have been obsessed with since TLo put them up on their website. I love love love them. I hate that she gets to wear them, and looks good. Sigh.

I love, love, love those clothes. Love them. Wish I had the body to wear them. What beautiful dresses.

    Her – eh.

She’s grown on me. I couldn’t stand her during the “I kissed a girl” era because mock lesbianism/bisexualism is stupid. I think she’s mellowed out without losing that fun aspect of her job, which is important. And she’s always been a looker. I think her body is pretty much perfection. One should always be proud of fabulous boobs.

OMG – Tits McHonkerboobs. I just fell on the floor laughing! I really like her – I don’t think she takes herself very seriously and she looks like she’s having fun within the chaos. Plus her hubby cracks me up – must be my hidden English sense of humor…

I love the Gaultier dress. LOVE.  It doesn’t look as great on her as it does on the runway model, but it is so smart and rich, I don’t even care.
