Kate Hudson & Ginnifer Goodwin for Marie Claire

Posted on May 20, 2011

We don’t pretend to know anything about the inner workings of the minds of either of these ladies, but man, they look like they really, really hate each other in these pictures.

Marie Claire June 2011 Issue; Kate Hudson & Ginnifer Goodwin

Kate Hudson on gaining 70 pounds during her first pregnancy: “Let me tell you something, It’s an emotional roller coaster, having to lose weight. I gained so much — I was 185 pounds at the end. You actually experience how much energy is stored in that and how much emotion you actually hold in that mass. It is emotional, no matter how determined you are. It takes work to bounce back so quickly.”

Ginnifer Goodwin on her weight: “”I am genetically predisposed to be a bigger girl than I am. If I didn’t live in Hollywood, I would be. I have very real hips and a real Southern woman’s ass.” [...] “I’ve never had body issues, and I’ve never had an eating disorder.”

Granted, since the entire focus seems to be “OhmyGOD, we had to lose weight!” maybe that explains why they look so pissed off in the pictures. Seriously, in most of them they look like they’re facing the bad guy in an action movie:

Goodwin in a blazer by Rebecca Minkoff, tank by Neil Barrett and pants by Dsquared2. Hudson in a dress by Dior.

Jacket and pants by Theyskens’ Theory. Tank by Michael Kors.

Jacket by Neil Barrett. Shirt by Maison Martin Margiela. Ring by Hoorsenbuhs.

Coat by Yves Saint Laurent.

Goodwin in a coat Rue du Mail by Martine Sitbon. Hudson in jumpsuit by Yves Saint Laurent.

Top by Maison Martin Margiela.

Goodwin in jacket by ADAM and tank by Michael Kors. Hudson in dress by Helmut Lang.

And it’s such a colorless editorial. Either the clothes are black and white or the pictures are. As the kids (in 2008) would say, EPIC FAIL.

I like Ginnifer’s hair…that’s about it. The still of the video is kinda funny with them making the same weird “we’re in the middle of saying the same thing” face.

Funny, I like it too…It reminds me of the 80s.

    • http://twitter.com/shop_grrl tina albright

I think the photos were shot separately and pasted together. they’re totally unaware of each other. even when they’re touching! also, i’d like to know why the photogrpher thinks Ginnifer only has one good side!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1084579031 Carolyn Wheat

Is Ginnifer a lesbian?  They sure styled her like one!

      • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

Because she has short hair and wears blazers?!?!!? What.

        • MilaXX

probably because they did her hair like KD Lang

          • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

I have the same hairstyle as Claire Danes, so by that transitive property, I’m married to Hugh Dancy. YUM.

            Constant craaaaaving, it’s aaaaalways been.

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1084579031 Carolyn Wheat

It’s the butch hair, blazer and tank top in nearly every shot…   The Theory suit is definitely the worst!

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Heather-McIlrath/673340132 Heather McIlrath

that’s the strangest editorial i’ve ever seen. i’m left confused and a little of put

    • http://profiles.google.com/thisiscelia Celia

I kind of like Ginnifer’s hair, though it looks horrid on the cover. The cover is all kinds of awful–who shot this? They both look awkward posing with each other, and half of their individuals shots are pretty terrible too. Ginnifer Goodwin in the Theory suit is probably the worst photo (aside from the cover). Yikes!

    • Lamenda Andersen

“You actually experience how much energy is stored in that and how much emotion you actually hold in that mass.”

this makes absolutely NO sense. Just Hollywood “I’m trying to sound deep about something totally lame” speak.

      • http://twitter.com/AnnaPBrittain APB

Tell me about it. Especially since in my heavier days I tended to have LESS energy. And yes, Kate-you-skinny-bitch, losing weight is emotional.

        Hollywood vapidity at its finest!

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_T24URKJGBLJQPBWCRPU37IIHLU Krab Louse

She means the feeling of “hanging onto emotions” and “the past.”   I understand exactly what she means.  It is one of those statements that isn’t “average” and one wouldn’t understand it unless one has experienced it.  It’s the feeling of dead weight and being dragged down.

      I like Ginnifer’s hair too.

    • http://twitter.com/graceishuman Grace

It’s sometimes downright frightening how much Kate Hudson looks like her mother (in the white Maison top in particular).

      • http://profiles.google.com/patandpan Timothy White

I was thinking along the same lines. I have never seen her look more like her mother than that shot.

      • Anonymous

I was thinking wow, that’s the best picture of her I have ever seen. Now that you mention it, she does look even more like her mom than usual. She really is beautiful when she smiles. Too bad everytime she opens her mouth, she has to say something annoying.

Oh, I think if I’d just spent an hour telling thousands of readers that I love my body just the way it is but goddamn did I have to suffer to get rid of all that filthy shameful fat –

Well, I’d be giving the camera the same face that Kate Hudson’s wearing throughout the piece.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_3AJ237ND3GAHDQJZ4TLCO4WLRA Emily

Weird editorial.  I like them both individually — the movie Something Borrowed was pretty bad.

    • Anonymous

Hmm. Looks like photos from a lesbian wedding. Goodwin must be the top.

    • Anonymous

The cliche that actresses make bad models. As a gal of the 80’s I want to get back to models being models and actresses being actresses.

    • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_MNMVM2GPVUEIOJXBOSLCXKAW4U judy brown

Kate, either do your roots before a photo shoot or, if you’re trying to grow the color out, tint the rest dark.

Clothes so boring only their pissy looks and Kate’s roots were noticeable.

    • Tiffany Stoik

I think Ginnifer would be a lot prettier if she had more meat on her bones. She doesn’t fit into her looks that skinny.

    • Judy_J

Kate in that blouse by Maison Martin Margiela….that’s the first time I’ve ever thought she looked like her mom Goldie.

    • Anonymous

I am really, really sick of Ginnifer’s hair. It’s needs to go (grow). It’s ugly and not modern or chic.

    • Anonymous

GG is so terribly unphotogenic. She looks as bad here as on the RC. Couldn’t they have styled her better? I’m sure she’s much prettier in real life. Ms. Hudson looks the same as always, not bad. But man, this is dull.

    • MilaXX

Why the sapphic vibe? Anyway I like how they styled Ginnefer’s hair & I love that white trench on her.

    • Mary McClelland

I HATE HATE HATE Ginnifers hair.  I also abhor how she is always trying to look tough – it is sooo forced.  You can’t pull it off! Go home, get a weave and a cute sundress, and come back looking like yourself.

    • Anonymous

Hate the pictures; too generic and clinical in a way.

    • Lisa

They both look good, but Kate definitely has that “I’M the star here, and this little upstart had better recognize!” look on her face in every picture.  She definitely looks like she’s trying to control things with that face and her body language.

    • http://profiles.google.com/richixcore Richi Robilotto

They finally did something cute with Ginnifer’s hair. That’s all I have to say about this.

      HUGE whatever. Pretty girls.

A friend used to wait tables in a Colorado eatery in the 80’s where Goldie Hawn & her kids, sometimes with Kurt Russell, would come to eat. Russell was a carnivore, while Hawn pretty much restricted herself to steamed veggies and the occasional bite off of someone else’s plate. Sometimes the kids would go the burger & fries route, sometimes Goldie would insist they have some healthier options on their plates.  Hudson was raised from birth to obsess over weight.

That’s one of the saddest things I’ve ever read.  When are we ever going to let people in Hollywood just be who they are?

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_T24URKJGBLJQPBWCRPU37IIHLU Krab Louse

It doesn’t sound to me like anyone is “letting her” do or not do anything.  Do you know her personally?

A whole different feeling about the two actresses (though not necessarily about the shoot) came up when I watched the Marie Claire clip about what is in their bags. Sweet and somewhat revealing, and they seem not to know each other very well AND they get to know each other better through their exchange (chocolate is involved).  Which one carries a SAG card and which does not? Also, I love the Maison Martin Margiela top that Kate Hudson is wearing.

    • Anonymous

totally uninteresting, though again I admire GG for going with a hairstyle that shows some courage to be different (unlike Kate whose been sporting long hair for, oh forever).

Once again though – check out the sad state of continuing media influence on women on the front cover of Marie Claire. “Kate Hudson and GInnifer Goodwin on babies, weddings and body issues” . Directly below it (by Kate’s elbow): “5 ways to spot an eating disorder.” Nope – no relation between showing thin celebrities in form fitting clothes who talk about not being able to eat and women with eating disorders.

      • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_T24URKJGBLJQPBWCRPU37IIHLU Krab Louse

Eating disorders are largely created by this whole “fat acceptance” thing.   When parents stop nagging teenage girls (and some boys) to EAT, EAT, EAT then they will see a change.  Anorexia is about control and there is a rebellious undercurrent to it.  “I’ll show them.  I will never be fat!”   That is what is at the core of the illness.  The attraction to models and Hollywood stars is secondary to the inherent rebellion.

On the cover, Kate sez “Thanks, Ginnifer, for wearing that jacket!  It doesn’t do much for you, but it’s making me look even more slender!”

lol @ “5 ways to spot an eating disorder”. like ed is a rare bird or something

Kate Hudson always looks really irritated to me. I think it’s her weird lips.

“Let me tell you something, It’s an emotional roller coaster, having to lose weight.”
Do tell. Because I’m sure you’ve had it harder than all the other women in the U.S. that try to lose weight without personal trainers and private dieticians. I hate when pampered celebs act like a fairly common problem most people have dealt with at one time or another is some how brand new and a much deeper problem when it personally effects them.  How sheltered are you, girl?

    • Anonymous

I like Ginnifer best when she looked quirky, nerdy and REAL as Diane Snyder on Ed.

    • vmcdanie

What the hell is going on with Ginnifer’s hair? At least they didn’t bring back the harsh 80’s eye makeup and shoulder pads to go with it.

Maybe it’s just how they were directed but there seems to be no love lost at that photo shoot.

    • http://profiles.google.com/mochizukisan kyasarin mochizuki

Overall, an insipid article, both photos and content, which is par for the course with Marie Claire. In a couple of photos here, though, I have to say, this is the first time I’ve seen any Goldie Hawn in Kate Hudson, which means this is the first time I’ve found the latter even vaguely appealing.

    • http://twitter.com/RachelGCarroll Rachel Carroll

Is it just me or are they trying to suggest the whole LA Lesbian vibe from the L-Word?  Very strange… Plus I don’t like the way they look, lol

    • Sarah Henkel

Wow, Kate looks JUST like her mama Goldie in that second-to-last photo.
