In or Out: Lucy Liu in Marchesa

Posted on May 23, 2011

Lucy Liu attended the Los Angeles premiere of “Kung Fu Panda 2” in a Marchesa dress which may have gotten caught in her limo door.

Well. Here’s a dilemma. We’re not at all crazy about the original dress but we’re equally not as crazy about the alterations to it. It went from looking a little punk-bridal to looking like a dance costume. Sure, she’s got the legs for it, but we’re just not all that crazy about tutu-style skirts on grown women. There’s this weird sexy/infantile thing that happens and Lucy’s too fierce and attitudinal to be deploying such a coquette-ish look. Either way, we would have called this an OUT because we are SO OVER little folded-napkin dresses, not matter the hem length. Still, we can’t say she looks bad here;  just that we’re not really feeling it. Hair and makeup look great and the shoes are the standard red carpet go-to: neutral and open-toed. Bleh.

IN! She looks as fresh as a newly unwrapped tampon, you picky queens!

OUT! She looks like she’s wearing the winner of the “Brawny Paper Towel” challenge on Project Runway!

Minion Opinion on Halle Berry’s fuzzy merkin look was an almost-unanimous OUT.

    OUT. Toilet paper. Moving on.

  • Rocío Vázquez

    I like it
    I don’t love it, but i think it’s ok.

  • DH

Hmmm. I was prepared to not like it…but I think I DO like it. A tentative In.

  • Sara Nolan Collins

IN.  I like the alterations, and I don’t see tutu at all.

  • Cindi Williams

Reminds me of facial tissue roses I would see at baby showers in the 70s.

  • Judy Shoaf

If you hadn’t said that about the paper towel challenge, I would have said “in.” But you put your finger on the OUTness of it.

  • Anonymous

Oh, good lord. “Hi, my  names Lulu, and I’m FIVE YEARS OLD!”

  • MilaXX

I went back and forth on this. I’m going to give her a minimal IN here because she looks really pretty in last picture. I’m not crazy about the dress but I prefer her version to the runway version. I hate the neutral peep toe with this dress and I agree Lucy is too fierce for the dress, but Lucy hasn’t graced these part that often so I’m willing to cut a little slack.

    Out. Ugly and shapeless.

  • Gina Knox Rook

    So over Marchesa. Out.

  • Anonymous

Out, this should have been on a starlet at the Young Hollywood Awards

  • Anonymous

OUT. i do wish the “beige” shoe would go AWAY!

  • Jessica O’Connell

IN – it’s Lucy friggin Liu and she looks gorgeous. It’s not my favorite dress but she’s working it and I like how the belt and clutch give it a bit of contrast and color.

  • Anonymous

Looks like someone wound her up in bar towels and strapped it around her with gaffers tape.  White is far from the best color for her.  Where is my “take no prisoners” Lucy?  I want her back.

  • Anonymous

I like the original dress, however the re-designed version looks startilingly similar to the dress I made for one of my kids 5th grade graduation ceremony.

  • Anonymous

Out.  The shoes do nothing for the dress, which does nothing for itself.  I might have actually liked it the original length, but even then it is too bridal for the red carpet. I think her makeup complements the dress well, though.

  • Anonymous

I like it. She looks gourgeous! “IN!”

  • foodhussy

     i don’t like white on her…OUT

  • Anne Sisk

In. The top looks strange in some of the farther-away pictures but I like it close up.

  • Anplica Fiore

She looks great from the waist up, but really dislike the skirt & shoes.  Out.

  • Amanda in Austin

  • Jodi McKee

IN. i think she is pulling it off.

  • Amanda in Austin

When is the nude shoe going to DIE?!?  Please, let it be soon. Please, dear baby Jesus.

  • Crazygfish Burble

Strangely I kinda like it…AND it makes me think of pandas so…I’ll give her an IN. XD

  • Lauen newman

She looks like she is wearing a cocktail napkin. OUT.

  • Anonymous

It makes me sad to declare her OUT because she’s so gorgeous. Despite her beauty, I can’t forgive the ratty folded doily Marchesa or the yawn inducing nude platforms.

  • Anonymous

that’s not much of an “in” is it? haha.
I like Lucy Liu and thinks she always looks good.

  • Anonymous

I’m confused as to why people get dressed up for the premiere of a cartoon sequel. What was the panda wearing?

  • Amber Boehm

She is a stunning looking woman. This is NOT the dress for her.

  • Lauren Dorsee Dillon

OUT. Looks like a Project Runway paper challenge.

  • Terence

OUT.  This is not her dress.  She is way too amazing to be in something like this.

  • Anonymous

I’ll just dare a guess and say that TLo is not familiar with the unwrapped tampon…

  • Anonymous

The dress is too short for those shoes to be worn with it.    the height of the shoe may have worked with the model’s version.   Like most I wish she hadn’t made it that short or had left it like the original.

That first picture on the last panel (what do we call that?) is not flattering.  (Maybe I notice it more because I am concerned that my eyes lack symmetry at times)

  • Anonymous

I’m going to give a marginal in.  I like the belting, hair and make-up works really well, and I’ll let her legs make up for the hem (but just this once).

  • Vaniljekjeks

Out.  She looks gorgeous, but that dress is awful.  Just… blah.
And completely off topic, I am kind of in love with the socks the runway model is wearing.

  • Wendy Kaufman

Well, please consider for what movie she’s attending the opening. It’s a kids’ movie. I think she was trying for a youthful look, without a lot of sexy fierceness. She pulled it off beautifully. That said, I hate the shoes.

  • Anonymous

I’m longing to see the Bravo Paper Towel challenge in the next series of PR.

In the meantime, this gets an OUT.

  • Anonymous

In. She looks ladylike to me. I wouldn’t have thought a girly white dress on a 40ish woman would work, but she’s working it.

  • bookish

OUT. That is flat out just a silly dress. She does look pretty in it, though.

  • Valery Lunar

OUT! it would be better suited on a young CW actress

  • Judy_J

Out.  And she does look like a freshly unwapped tampon!

  • Jasper Peng

IN – she looks great in white

  • Heather

OUT. Like Kristin Davis, she’s fierce and 40-something, and needs to dress appropriately. This is too young for her. And the shoes are awful.

  • Anonymous

Hmmm. In, I guess. Short, appropriate for the event and the rest works.

She looks what I thought Kristen Wiig was going to do to Maya Rudolph’s dress in “Bridesmaids.”

  • Stella Zawistowski

Just because you ARE beautiful enough to wear a dress made of toilet paper, it doesn’t mean you should actually DO it. OUT.

  • Anonymous

Anchoring one end of a roll of shredded toilet tissue to one’s waist whilst performing a Wonder Woman spin does NOT create an appropriate article of clothing.  OUT!

  • Anonymous

Love Lucy Liu. She is drop dead gorgeous and totally fierce, but this dress is not a great color on her and it’s way too much fru fru. Out.

  • Catherine Rhodes

  • Mars Tokyo

OUT, she should have left the dress alone and it would have been fine. I hate it when celebs think they are designers.

  • Loretta Gary

i don’t know why i’m saying this… but IN. perhaps i just like looking at her – and the dress and boring shoes aren’t offensive enough to put me off. More Lucy Liu! Less dressing like a Fanning… for all grown women.

  • Anonymous

  • Sorana Tarmu

She looks good but it’s OUT. The original is better and those shoes need to be sanctioned. Plus, she looks 13.

  • { edi } ilovetrash

i like the toilet paper dress but i like the original more voile-t toilet paper dress far better. then again, i like the panda costume more than all of it–other than the toenail polish. i noticed the toenail polish cos the shoes have been worn so many times they are invisible. i think this took place more or less down the street from me {@ what was once, in better days, called the cinerama dome}. when you see this stuff in person it all looks a great deal smaller, in every sense of the word. hope i make sense & hope it helps!

    edited to add:
ps. then again, it might have been @ what was once, in better days, called grauman’s chinese theater. it’s one of them, tho. sadly, accompanied by all the hoodads & foofaraw of advertising signs in the background, these once, in better days, thoroughly different & iconic structures tend to look the same.

  • Anonymous

I actually kinda love the runway version. Hate the modifications on Ms. Liu. She’s usually so much more elegant and sophisticated than this confectionary drivel.

  • suzq

Out.  For all the above mentioned reasons…and for the fact that it’s just a strange thing to wear to a cartoon premiere.

  • Anonymous

OUT. Hate the dress, can’t move past it even for Lucy Liu.

  • Anonymous

IN.  Pretty, polished, and girly.  I like.

  • Anonymous

In. Or, really “in” no capital letters at all.

Really think she needs to do something more sophisticated with the hair. My biggest criticism is taking a mildly fierce rendition of a blandly pretty dress for a ‘young thing’ and sucking all the fierce out of it to turn it into yet another, yes god help us all, another extremely brief little dress for a “young thing.” The dress is fine if bland (though the kids would be fine if you showed a little less skin, really they would.)

Especially irritates me because she’s got the looks, the body and, – yes, sorry Lucy – the years on her, to do something more sophisticated.

  • Laura O’Gorman

I think she looks great! The dress is a touch young for her but I think she’s working it.

  • Megan Sullivan

  • Natasha Figueiredo

TLo I totally agree, however, I feel that white doesn’t photograph well so its possible that the dress had a slightly different affect in person. But I do agree that this dress looks quite like a freshly used tissue.

  • rebecca harris

I like it because it’s appropriate for a cartoon movie premiere. she looks like a pretty little panda, kinda.

  • Cakewalk Yarns

Out.   It does look like they wrapped a bolt of fabric around her & secured it with a belt.  I’m sure if the photos were closeups we’d see pins a la PR.

Why does a cartoon warrant a red carpet premier? That seems so absurd to me.

    • Anonymous

Did you not see TLo’s post about a red carpet event for SKIN CREAM?

    • shawna ready

Animated features take just as much time and work as live-action films and the voice actors deserve just as much of a chance to celebrate and show them off.

  • Anonymous

I don’t like it but I want to say in just because you said “newly unwrapped tampon” and I nearly fell out of my chair.

  • Anonymous

“Tlo said: OUT! She looks like she’s wearing the winner of the “Brawny Paper Towel” challenge on Project Runway!”

Nancy Walker made a great guest judge though, didn’t she?

  • Johnny Heffernan

I have no idea how, but she’s pulling it off. Her legs are killer.

  • Anonymous

Out. If she was going for fun, this wasn’t the way to do it. She’s so beautiful and she can do so much better.

  • moodring54

IN. It might be done, but she looks good, end of story.

  • Anonymous

shes WAY to fierce for this. she looks good, but she can do so much better. OUT

  • Anonymous

    Out…..not “Lucy Liu” at all.

  • Vera

I like Lu’s version better than the original.  It’s okay, but it doesn’t move me. IN anyway,

  • Samantha Irene

She’s too cute to be out. And compared to Brad and Angie – at least she brought some contrast…

  • Sara__B

Out. It’s not awful, but it does look like the winner of the paper towel challenge.

  • Margot Brose

In, you picky queens! SHe looks gorgeous; I just don’t think the material translates that well into photos…

  • Anonymous

Out. She looks like a cotton ball.

  • Anonymous

  • Cecelia DeLuca

OUT.  And thanks for objecting to girl clothes on grown women.

  • Garrett McCarver

Out. Edit was dull. original look would have been more than appropriate.

  • Anonymous

    OUT. I would’ve loved this when I was 4.

  • Anonymous

She looks like she tied a scrubbie around herself with ribbon.  OUT.

  • Anonymous

Great dress, and she has a great body. But it is completely the wrong dress for her. OUT.

  • Anonymous

I can’t fathom what would make a grown woman point at that cotton ball and say, ‘that one. I want to wear the one that makes me look like a cream puff.’

    • akprincess72

Especially since to wear such a hankie dress you likely can’t even enjoy a real cream puff…

  • Nhu Le

But she looks great – pretty, youthful, and radiating. I don’t care for Marchesa, but in.

  • A. W. Stevens

OUT.  But it’s better than Lara Flynn Boyle’s tutu dress…

  • Joseph Lamour

I don’t think the alterations makes her dress look as pedo-bear friendly like Michelle Williams does sometimes– but boy if it doesn’t look like she was at a costume fitting for Black Swan 2.

  • Sara Parker

You’re right, I think she looks as fresh as a newly unwrapped tampon.  Which is to say, AUF.  You’re better than that, Lucy.  Volume =/= edgy.  Does wearing Marchesa really get you jobs in Hollywood?  Is that how this works?  If that’s the case, then I guess she could do worse…

  • Paige Boerman

I’m just so damn bored with it. OUT.

  •ébaul/100002426617563 Juline Débaul

The shoes are a disappointing choice, but she still ought to be IN. Hair and makeup look wonderful!

  • Anonymous

I’ll go with “IN” for her, she looks very good here.  But an “OUT” for the dress itself.  Fugly.  But it does fit her as nicely as that thing could fit anyone.  The crime is Marchesa’s, not Lucy’s.

  • Anonymous

OUT, im afraid. i dont share your hatred for ‘folded napkin dresses’, and most of the time i cant even really see why you call them that. in this case, i can. it really looks like shes just wearing a belt over some tulle that has been randomly draped around her body.

  • APB

    It’s a little (okay, a lot) twee.

  • Anonymous

    I’m feeling benevolent.  IN.

  • Matthew Just

IN! She’s adorable! Don’t risk the wrath of O-ren Ishii

  • Anonymous

Ms Lucy is In…the dress is out…doesn’t look finished, haphazard trimming of lace. The dress is also too white a hue for her…needs a softer touch.

  • Emily

Out.  I feel like she’s always wearing similar dresses.

  • Marguerite

    Out. *shudder*  Definitely out.

  • Anonymous

I don’t like either version but the longer one is the better one. OUT.

  • Anonymous

    Out. H.O.R.R.I.D.

  • Ebba Svantesson

  • Patricia Biswanger

OUT.  It makes her look old, and that’s about the worst thing a dress can do, besides making you look fat.  It would be adorable on Hailee Steinfeld, but she looks silly.

  • Marissa

OUT. This is the dress that Selena Gomez should have worn  at the billboard awards, and Lucy should have worn the sexy black one with the cut outs. This dress looks silly on her.

  • Anonymous

OUT. You’re right, she’s too old (e.g. over 18) and way too cool for this dress.

  • Anonymous

I like it okay but I don’t think I like it on her.  On Dakota Fanning sure… on Lucy Liu… Out.

  • Anonymous

I like it.  The belt adds something to it.  As much as Marchesa is overdone; the small, cute, mildly interesting dress will always look good on the right person.  I think she is beautiful.  IN.

  • LocMama

IN, but if some stylist tells me again that a nude shoe extends my leg I’m going to hurl.  Damn shoes don’t match my skintone anyway…

  • LocMama

IN, but if some stylist tells me again that a nude shoe extends my leg I’m going to hurl.  Damn shoes don’t match my skintone anyway…

  • kyasarin mochizuki

I think I might have turned into the jerk who looks at a dress, realizes its Marchesa, then gives an instant OUT, no matter how nicely the wearer of said dress is styled.

Eff you, Marchesa, for putting an old cat toy on this pretty lady.

  • edlyn

in!!!! she looks gorgeous, and i love the tutu on her, and especially the little black belt which highlights her small waist! i think she looks beautiful in this dress
