In or Out: Lucy Liu in Antonio Berardi

Posted on May 25, 2011

Lucy is making the rounds, poledancing for her little panda movie and giving us dresses to talk about. Put your bitchpants on, ladies. We’ve got work to do.

Lucy Liu attends the New York premiere of “Kung Fu Panda 2″ in an Antonio Berardi dress paired with a Roger Vivier clutch and Casadei shoes.

Hmm. It’s sharp, we’ll give it that. But it’s also a little space waitress. We’re not sure that plunging neckline really works on such a stiff little maid’s uniform. But when we step back, it feels like more than the sum of its parts. We love the little cap sleeves and the inverted lapels. We hate the skirt, though. Just like the Marchesa dress she wore the other day, this full, short skirt seems a little too girly for her. That exact same top with a more fitted skirt would have looked fierce. The shoes are fab but we hate the bag. Hair and makeup look good and the earrings are pretty and nicely understated, considering how showy the dress and shoes are.

VOTE NOW!

IN! She’s serving up sharpness and fierceness!

OUT! It looks like a pilgrim’s ice skating costume!

Minion Opinion on Katie Holmes’ sister-wife bridesmaid dress was a near-unanimous O to the UT.

IN.  First of all, those shoes could make up for a multitude of sins, but overall I like the look of this.  It might be a lot of boob action for the premiere a family film, but we’re no prudes here…

  • http://knottygnome.blogspot.com knottygnome

i love it. basic black, but not boring. i adore those shoes. definitely an IN.

A little off, but I like it.  IN.

  • aussiegal77

Hated that first photo but the rest sold me – I think this is an IN.  However, I hate the shoes.  Even with the snazzy heel – too clunky, wouldn’t you say?  Not loving the bag either.  Hair and make-up good.  I’m still giving it an IN because the dress itself is working for me – and I do like the skirt this time, I think the length of the skirt is much better on this dress.

  • http://vhanna26.typepad.com Vera

It does like it’s on backwards, but it’s panda cute, and she wears it well. IN.

IN. But I agree the dress would look much better if it had a fitted skirt. The top part just doesn’t mesh with skirt at all. But dang, loving those shoes!

In.  I also hate the clutch.

  • Diana Martinez

Love the shoes, but not with this.  Something more like what the model had on would have worked better. know, I know, copying the runway model is a no-no, but hey, when it works, it works.

  • Anonymous

The only bad thing about those shoes is that they’re not in my closet or on my feet right now.   Overall, I’m not crazy about the puffier skirt, but she’s wearing it all well, and really isn’t anything but an IN.

  • http://twitter.com/wrenaria Kimmy Hescock

I did think maid when I saw her, but it fits her so well I have to say IN.

  • Kristin Peri

Skirt makes her legs look stumpy and the straps on the shoes increase the effect.  OUT.  Re: fitted skirt:  It would look even more fierce with pants.

  • Anonymous

I’m giving her an In. The skirt isn’t too girly for me–borderline, but not all the way over to the girly column. I like that she is wearing the skirt length closer to the knee than the runway version. That keeps it from being to twee. Love the neckline and shoulder cut-outs. The shoes are fab!

“poledancing for her little panda movie”

    A stroke of genius

  • Anonymous

Not perfect, but definitely an IN. The shoes are amazing and cancel out the hideousness of that clutch. Perhaps a pencil skirt silhouette would have been better; however, she still looks fab.

  • Anonymous

In. Yeah, the skirt is full and short, but it seems to work OK here. I actually like the bag.. totally different from the outfit and a nice color.

  • Anonymous

ok, i be the dissenter.  for me, the parts are great, but not the whole.  The fit is fantastic.  The bodice, inspired.  But the skirt is too full, and while the shoes are terrific, they look too Mary-jane-ish for the outfit to me.  I realize that i may be alone, but the shoes bring it too much to little girl land which clashes too much with the bodice.  Out for me.

    • Anonymous

I agree.  Looking at the parts individually I like them, but put all together the look is off to me.

To all who want those shoes – versus just think they look fierce – would you actually wear them?  I have a few pair I bought (but at extremely discounted prices) that while I think they are incredible looking I can never wear them.  they are brutal.  (and this is before I wrecked my knee)

  • Anonymous

Everything but the skirt portion of this look is a Yes! She would be better suited with a more fitted and tailored skirt.

“Space Waitress”……..snorting ginger ale here.  I had an instant visual of Rosie the Robot from “The Jetsons”.

Seriously, I guess it’s an overall “IN” but a little odd.  The shoes are amazing.  The skirt is just too flouncy, not sure about the cutout shoulder details.  But she does look convinced that she looks good, which counts for a lot.

  • Anonymous

OUT. Once again, she’s wearing an outfit that looks like it should be on a teen or early 20 something starlet.  She and J Lo need to find some age appropriate clothes.  You can be over 40 and fabulous without dressing like a youngster.

Love it. Love the hair, the shoes are amazing. The bag is meh.

I think Ms Lucy’s ensemble, it captures her sex kitinish side and her outright playful side. Dislike the trendy, but oh so ugly purse. Looks good for a premiere and is an IN…

  • Anonymous

Out. In concept the dress is great. But on LL it makes her look very oddly proportioned.

  • Anonymous

IN. C’mooooon it’s Lucy Liu. We haven’t seen here in awhile :)

Out. While the shoes are amazing, the dress, sans the neckline, reminds me of Shirley Temple.

IN. But oh, I have thoughts.

I actually thought she’s being witty and fun, showing up to the children’s movie in a clear reference to a school uniform. Hm, apparently that’s not as obvious as I thought it was. But it’s cute, absolutely adorable whilst still a bit sexy and very, very pretty. The skirt reminds me of bamboo leaves (okay, I know this sounds contrived, but it really, really does!) and I like it more than I expected to. And did you notice the slits on the sleeves? It’s just… such a clever little getup.

Don’t love the bag either but man, do the shoes ever make up for it. The only real complain is that bit of a weird fit under her breasts. What’s up with the puckering?

  • Leslie Carver

Love the shoulder detail. There’s a feel of structure and substance from this. The colour palette, or lack thereof, makes this sophisticated enough to handle the overtly girlish shape. IMHO :-)

This one IS hard. Love the top, serious misgivings about the skirt (and as you noted, it could have been fabulous), clutch is ugly and that’s more boob than is really appropriate to a daytime event for a children’s film, in my opinion.

But, with big reservations, IN. She looks good, I really love the top despite the breasts on display, and the shoes are cute.

OUT. I like the top and the bottom. I do not like them together. A slimmer skirt with that bodice, a top with less tailored type details with that skirt. Then there is the space waitress quality of the dress that just can’t be denied.

  • margaret meyers

I like the dress, too, and it fits her perfectly:  sexy and lady-like is tricky.  I want the skirt a couple of inches longer and I want to see a good piece of jewelry.  That smart dress needs a great dress clip or brooch at the waist.  The earrings are beautiful but I want something just a little bigger.

love the dress but she only barely pulls it off. it would probably look better on someone a little younger, given how girly the silhouette is. the clutch has weird proportions.

I notice this dress looks so much better on her than the model because she has a waist (!) and bust (!!).
Seriously, that dress looks weirdly bunchy on the model.  I wish designers would hire girls with figures to show their dresses that were designed for girls with figures.
Also, your strange hate for the skirt is somewhat out of left field.  Its not like she could say, “yes, I will wear your dress, but change it from a full to an A line skirt! chop chop design boy!”
